I can't believe I went through all that trouble to leave Navarro and make my way across the country just to get stuck in this shithole. I'll be damned if I'm going to die here.W. Brandice's terminal; 6-17-2277

William Brandice was an Enclave deserter and former resident of the Brandice's house in Grayditch, whose corpse can be found in Marigold station in 2277.

Background[]

William was the husband of Sheila and the father of Will Brandice.[1] Originally stationed at Camp Navarro, Brandice eventually deserted from the Enclave. He journeyed across the continent with his family, hopping from settlement to settlement to avoid capture by the Enclave. In October 2276, they finally settled down at Grayditch in the Capital Wasteland, with William setting up as a doctor. The settlement was appealing to William not just because of the distance, but also because his son Will got along well with Bryan Wilks, the child who lived across the road from them.[2][Non-game 1]

The peace did not last long. On October 30, 2276, William discovered a radio broadcasting Enclave Radio, with the old patriotic music and the speeches of President John Henry Eden. He immediately grew paranoid, fearing that the Enclave could be coming for him.[3] According to Bryan Wilks, William began to distrust his neighbors, constantly watching them and making notes in his terminal.[4]

Things turned out fine for some time. In fact, despite his paranoia, it seemed that William still maintained a friendship with Fred Wilks, and his greatest enemy was actually the giant ants plaguing the area, hindering his scavenging efforts. Even then, the ants were only a nuisance until Doctor Lesko came to Grayditch on November 15, 2276. The Wilks helped Lesko set up shop, and Lesko offered to pay William for his assistance as well. William refused, uncertain of Lesko's motives.[5][6]

After Lesko's arrival, the ants gradually became more and more of a threat. On February 24, 2277, William traveled to Megaton to buy a better weapon to protect his family, trading his entire stockpile of ant meat for the weapon, which he hid behind the refrigerator. However, even this was not enough as the ants grew more and more aggressive. By April 2, William was convinced the situation was worsening and decided to dig up his old Enclave sidearm, a laser pistol, for personal protection at all times.[7][8] Despite all his efforts, things went poorly, and by June 17, William and his family were trapped inside their house and cut off from the rest of the settlement. William refused to accept that their journey to find safety would end in such a way, and intended to hold out as long as possible with the fire ants clawing their way in through the walls.[9] Ultimately, William made his way outside and into Marigold station, where he fell victim to the ants.[Non-game 1]

Bryan Wilks: "He was like always watching me and my dad real careful, like he didn't trust us or something. He always kept staring at us from the windows of his house and typing stuff into his TV box. Will said his dad was like an old soldier or something, but he didn't like doing that stuff so he quit."

Bryan Wilks: "Well, there used to be like big regular ants once in a while... but pappa could usually hunt 'em down with Mr. Brandice across the street. It only started getting bad here with these Fire Ants after the Doc got here, yeah."

    "William Brandice (deceased):
Originally from Navarro (a west coast military base), Brandice journeyed across the continent for reasons unknown, and settled in the town of Grayditch as a doctor. Believing the Enclave was closing in on him, Brandice took to the underground, but wasn't ready for quite so many Fire Ants. A one-time friend of Fred Wilks, Brandice is said to have a small weapons cache saved from his transcontinental trek."
