Wastelanders are inhabitants of the Mojave Wasteland in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[]

"Wastelander" is a general term for anyone living across the wasteland who is not affiliated with a group or organization. They subsist off the land, trade with local settlements, and try to avoid hostile wildlife or roaming raider gangs, such as the Jackals and Vipers of the Mojave. Most are not hostile at first but will defend themselves if attacked. When that happens, they usually die, quickly.[1]

All wastelanders found in the Mojave start off dead, and are often placed in locations with hostile wildlife or environmental hazards to evidence the danger in the area. However, like many other generic NPCs, many wastelanders are flagged to respawn and can sometimes be found alive, wandering around their spawn location (see below for details).

Notes[]

  • Any living wastelanders encountered in Fallout: New Vegas have no special behavior and will only have generic dialogue if spoken to.
  • Cut content Templates for wastelanders intended to be alive (i.e. starting off with more than 0 HP) exist in the GECK but are not implemented anywhere in-game.

Bugs[]

PCPC Dead wastelanders may sometimes be found alive, but with an HP of zero, resulting in them dying upon taking any damage. This is an unintentional bug related to the AI processing: any cells which remains unloaded by the player for more than 72 in-game hours will be reset (containers refreshed, enemies recycled/respawned, etc). Many dead wastelanders are flagged to respawn, but because they had zero HP to begin with they will resurrect with zero HP. As such, dead wastelanders in areas without hostile creatures are more likely to be encountered alive (such as the one northwest of Novac or the one at the toxic dump site). [verified]
