The Wasteland or Wastes basically describes the majority of the globe's post-nuclear environment in the Fallout universe.

After the nuclear bombs of the Great War fell, the majority of the Earth's native plant and animal life was destroyed by the resulting radioactive fallout, creating a vast, arid emptiness. Along with the ecological damage sustained by the world, all human structures were partially to fully destroyed. When the survivors emerged from their various shelters, they saw this desolation and aptly named it "the Wastes". Not all buildings were destroyed, possibly because of their structure and the low-yield nuclear weapons deployed by the various nuclear powers in the Fallout world, and many still stood, though with at least partial structural damage.
