Sim pod used for the Anchorage Reclamation simulation

Virtual reality or VR is a simulated experience that can be similar to or completely different from the real world, in environments to generate realistic images, sounds, and other sensations that simulate a user's physical presence in a virtual environment.

Background[]

Virtual reality was used by the United States Armed Forces and the Vault-Tec Corporation for the purposes of education and training. Virtual reality also served as entertainment and was utilized for educational purposes. Specialized equipment is required to experience virtual reality, such as the tranquility lounger. Pre-War VR programs can be played via holotape, or otherwise coded from scratch.[1]

Before the war, Virtual Strategic Solutions worked as a private contractor for the U.S. Army, developing virtual training aids for various combat situations. The company installed the Anchorage Reclamation simulation in a Washington, D.C. facility. It was also responsible for installing a VR system in the Mount Desert Island Naval Facility which was later overwritten by DiMA to serve as secure storage for memories he did not have adequate space for over time.[2][3]

Locations[]

There are several locations with VR simulators, utilized for a variety of purposes, including:

Location Description Appearances Reference
The Vessel Used as a security mechanism, created by Virtual Strategic Solutions. Fallout 4
Far Harbor
Vault 13 A single SimTek 5000 for virtual reality training. Fallout
Vault 112 Lounger simulations connected to a Simtek 6000 administered by Stanislaus Braun. Three simulations were conducted via tranquility loungers including Toucan Lagoon and Slalom Chalet, and Tranquility Lane. Fallout 3
[4]
Outcast outpost Virtual Strategic Solutions Anchorage Reclamation simulation designed to recreate military aspects of the Battle of Anchorage. Fallout 3
Operation: Anchorage
Nellis Air Force Base Used as flight simulators to train pilots, utilized by the Boomers. Fallout: New Vegas
[5]
Hidden Valley bunker Training simulators used by the Mojave Brotherhood of Steel. Fallout: New Vegas
[6][7][8]
Big MT X-13 research facility Broken VR simulation room, destroyed by one of the staff members after it caused several deaths. Fallout: New Vegas
Old World Blues
[9]
Goodneighbor, Memory Den Simulation pods that allow individuals to re-live past memories. Fallout 4

Notes[]

  • Although the Fallout: New Vegas Official Game Guide describes the Mojave Brotherhood's VR pods as inoperable, in-game they are utilized by members of the group for combat simulation.[6][7]
  • The "SimTek 5000" post-nuclear simulation program is mentioned in both the Fallout and Fallout 4 Vault Dweller's Survival Guide.[10][11]

Appearances[]

Virtual reality appears in Fallout, Fallout 3 and its add-on Operation: Anchorage, Fallout: New Vegas and its add-on Old World Blues, Fallout 4 and its add-on Far Harbor.

  1. The Courier: "Did you make the training VR yourself?"
Lars Taggart: "Not far from it. When we reclaimed this bunker, I found a number of VR tapes. Most were corrupted, but a few programs still ran. Using those as my foundation, I was able to code the training VR, as well as other applications."

  3. The Sole Survivor: "You left your memories behind? How does that work?"
DiMA: "As a prototype synth, my... raw data capacity is limited. I began using computer banks to expand. To give me room to ponder. See new things. I had to leave some of my earliest memories behind when I left the sub base to the Children of Atom. I thought they were safe."

  5. Courier: "How has Nellis taught your people to fly?"
Pete: "Once we restored power, we learned that some elaborate chairs we'd been sleeping in were actually virtual reality simulators. We believe they were used to train combat pilots. We use them extensively. I alone have shot down over 500 Chinese Xian-85 fighters! Before you ask, I'm afraid there's no way you can be allowed to use the simulators. They are for our use only. Sorry."
    (Pete's dialogue)
  6. 6.0 6.1 The Courier: "Do all of the brothers use this equipment?"
Lars Taggart: "Everyone in the base has to spend a minimum of five hours a week running tactical simulations, but outside that, interest is scarce. It wasn't always this way. When we first moved into the bunker, everyone was so excited that the VR systems were intact. Over time, though, my fellows have become listless and less entertained by the wonders of the technology around us. That's why Apprentice Watkins is such a joy to work with. Her unbridled enthusiasm for virtual combat is unparalleled."

These scenarios were developed through scientific projections obtained from roughly 15,000,000 documented tests using the SimTek 5000, Vault-Tec’ Science Service’s most advanced post-nuclear simulation. The Vault-Tec Documentation Department has used the most likely projections as the basis for this guide. As this information was gleamed through simulation, we can not guarantee 100% accuracy.
