VAULT-TEC - The Fallout Wiki Edit

Hi i'm the founder of the german vault-tec wiki and the reasons for my own wiki are:

  1. . we have much less ads than the german wiki "die vault"
  2. . we have better images
  3. . some more little reasons

I want to have a certain degree of quality, that isn't given by the german wiki "Die Vault". Sry man for my mindset.

First articleEdit

Hey ausir,i wanna know something, wht was the first article evr made on this wikia? BlackEdge 20:13, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

hello ausir, i have a question. can i pls be an admin?im an EXTREMELY active fallout wikia person and im always checking out the articles. Also, i felt fallout wiki should have usergroups. Everything would be MUCH more organized. There should be like Enclave of fallout wikia, BoS of fallout wikia. like whatever the usergroup is, should edit related pages. And there should be ranks. There should be a rank list that shows who is what rank, and a rank request list but you must edit 100 pages that are related to your usergroup. If you do decide to use the idea, id like to be leader of the enclave usergroup.please reply asap. thank you. Snaketail 9:01, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

HELLO AUSIR I only recently stumbeled upon your online domain, and I was EXTREMLY impressed by the amount of information, reguarding fallout 3 alone, let alone everything you have here together. I am sorry for embelishing a number of the articles. I meant no harm, and was meerly trying to build upon them. I will be VERY selective with what I contribute to the vault, and I am very glad that your bans have lift dates, most wouldn't.

I also wanted to say that when someone is banned, there is no way to communicate with you about lifting it, as it offers. I will do my best when editing in the future to not embelsigh or add fictional content into the pages. My guess is that it was reguarding the illuminati. I was wrong, but in my own defence, very estranged as to the order of how things worked. I had mistook that articles co function as a talk page, rather then being seperate areas. Talk pages having yet to be found by me. I would make an account, but considering how I have damaged your articles I fell as though I should have more respect for your site then that. Again, sorry for the inconvience to you and any over vault wiki dwellers.

Alieneater1239 Edit

Hey there. Could you take a look at my discussion page concerning this guy. I have blocked him for 1 year due to repeated harassment and vandalism. Porter noticed stuff as well. Maybe a sock puppeting.Thanks--Kingclyde 15:04, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

Images Edit

Are images such as File:Very girl with gun.jpg and File:090119last.jpg appropriate to be uploaded here? -- Porter21 (talk) 13:50, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

I would think not. But too bad she wasn't in the game.:)--Kingclyde 16:29, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
I don't really care either, just wanted to check whether there were some (wikia) policies in that regard. -- Porter21 (talk) 16:30, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
I have to say though, I am getting a bit annoyed by the mass of user page images I have to categorize each day. Can we establish a "categorize your user page images or they'll be deleted" policy? Having to categorize all the other images is quite enough work considering there are probably all of 5 people here who categorize the images they upload (and that includes you and me already). -- Porter21 (talk) 16:36, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

They should make a follower based on her ;) TheMaintenanceGuy 20:50, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Outcast locationsEdit

Do we really need an ongoing list of outcast patrol locations in the article or can they be moved to discussion to clean up the page?--Kingclyde 16:39, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Discussion move would be easier to make it cleaner Werewolfhell 16:41, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Sidebar Edit

I think having both the main bar entry for a game and the Portal entry in the submenu link to the Portal for that game is a bit sub-optimal. One of them should link to the main game article, shouldn't it? -- Porter21 (talk) 06:59, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

I guess I should've clearer - my main point is that there should be a link to the main article for that game in the sidebar in my opinion. I don't really mind which page the main menu link goes to. -- Porter21 (talk) 10:28, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, that's better. -- Porter21 (talk) 10:42, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Caravan MerchantEdit

I was wondering if this should be made into a disambiguation page. I links all of the fallout 3 stuff as we only have a link to that. This page [[Caravan Merchant]] goes directly to Caravan merchant (Fallout 3) but has non fallout 3 links to it. What do you think? I can't make disambig pages.--Kingclyde 18:54, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Anybody can make disambig pages, all you do is insert {{disambig}} at the top and then start listing the page with descriptions by using the usual list format :-) I'll go ahead and do that, I'll also have my bot change the links after I've moved the page back to Caravan Merchant (Capital Wasteland)... thinking about it, Grizzly's original disambig title was better. -- Porter21 (talk) 19:09, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Infobox MKII Edit

Discussion moved to Forum:Infobox design change. -- Porter21 (talk) 12:48, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

admin Edit

excuse me ausir, can i be an admin please? (UTC)Snaketail 12:05, 14 June (UTC)

deletion Edit

Alright, I recently merged a lot of Vault 101 pages, and Porter Mentioned Funiture. Now, taking a look acroos them, an awful lot of them seem incredibly useless. Unfortunatly, I discovered that you stopped deletion in the past. Therefore, I am wondering what makes them worth saving. The pages all seem to be interlinked to each other and there is no way of finding them without deliberatly searching for them. An example would be Balloon, which seems to be an in-depth discription of an actual balloon. What do you want doing with these pages, because several users have expressed their distaste for them. The deletion tags are in place, and it took us a long time to do that. Fat Man Spoon 17:47, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

To be fair, Fat Man Spoon and Nitpicker were not aware of the previous discussions before they added the tags. They both weren't around when the original round of discussions was on and I only told them after they had made those edits (since I wasn't online sooner). -- Porter21 (talk) 19:25, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Fallout Tactics TrapsEdit

I probably should have ran this by you and Porter first, but I just added a bunch of traps that were missing from the wiki. I went ahead and put them under the Explosives category in the Fallout Tactics Weapons Navbox template, even though a majority of them aren't even "explosive" in nature. I just didn't know where else they should go. If you think this might be an issue, let me know. Mr. Sully 05:43, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Another category just simply called "Traps" sound okay? Mr. Sully 02:19, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Becoming an Admin Edit

Hey! I was talking to Kingclyde about how to become an admin. He says that he just came to the site, did a lot of edits, and just talked to you. I'm very curious to see what it's like seeing as how I can't stand people insulting me on this site. Being an admin might get me a little more respect from them, plus I would like to help out with the edits. If I am to become a member of the Vault's admins, what would I have to do and how do I do it?--FawkesGamer360 18:12, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Becoming an admin does not mean people respect you or makes them respect you. If that is why you want to become an admin, then those are the wrong reasons. I didn't say I came here, did alot of edits and then just talked to Ausir. I actually care how this site looks and functions. I became an admin after having 1)wiki experience and 2) doing my fair share of fixing up and clean up. Admin isn't something that should be taken lightly.--Kingclyde 03:34, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

I want to be an admin, I love fallout and I know a lot about the Fallout World and I wouldn't mind deleting vandalised bits off this wiki --LoneMerc101 10:46, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Enclave Dogmeat. Edit

When I tried to sneak invisible from an enclave camp,Dogmeat apeard out of nowhere (bushes) and my first thing that came in my mind was: "Enclave!Oh my God its Enclave Dogmeat".It scared the hell out of me.

Thanks! I'm a great fan of Fallout and I'm really trying to help others by refining some of the pages here. This is probablt the best site to get anything for Fallout. Random question: Do you know what the release date for Operation: Anchorage for PS3 is?

O:A for PS3 Edit

Ah well, thanks anyways. I'm REALLY looking forward to finally trying it out and see if that glitch works.

Editing Pages Edit

I was wondering if everyone could edit article pages. I was wondering because I edited two articles (Porter's Cafe and Enclave Officer Uniform) and they were both deleted. Please respond. Thanks SuSpence95 02:02, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

What I mean is that what I edited was deleted, not the article itself. SuSpence95 02:18, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

D'Oh! I'm stupid about the Porter's Cafe thing. Anyway, on my game save (PS3) I have a set of Enclave Officer uniform that's 100% repair and another one that is less and the unequipped one was taking the damage (similar to Tesla Armor glitch) Well if it's just happening to me than oh well. Thanks for replying! SuSpence95 02:28, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Reverse Pickpocketing Edit

Alright, thanks for the info. This should be noted in each usage of "reverse pickpocketing" in this sense, because it is very confusing otherwise. I'll make sure the edits I made reflect that.

The community should come up with a third term for this. Perhaps Swap-Pickpocket. Pickpocket means to steal an item. Reverse-Pickpocket means to give an item. (Like a grenade.) The third case is when you reverse-pickpocket a better item in order to pickpocket something they are wearing. I found another instance where an author simply calls this "reverse-pickpocket". This is not an accurate name for the two step process.

Maybe you can suggest a different name other than "Swap-Pickpocket". Or, if that's a good name, perhaps I will write up an article for it, and take the notes for it out of the reverse-pickpocket article.

It would be much more clear if we had a separate term for this.

I understand that the concept is explained in detail in the reverse-pickpocket article. This doesn't necessarily mean that it's the best term to use. A distinct term would help users who understand what normal reverse pickpocketing is, but have never encountered this special usage. It simply doesn't make sense to call it reverse pickpocketing, when it involves reverse pickpocketing and additional steps.
Reverse pickpocketing means giving a wig to a ghoul for fun, or power armor to a caravan vendor, or a live grenade to a Super Mutant. It does not imply giving more powerful armor to a character in order for him to take off his regular armor so that you can then pickpocket the regular armor. It's a multi-step operation that would be more accurately described with some new term. It's the same reason we even use the term reverse pickpocketing instead of just calling everything "pickpocketing". It helps disambiguate. -- 04:49, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Signature with Edit Count Edit

Sorry, it's me again. My Signature with the edit count won't update. I've gone to my preferences and updating it and everything and it says my current edits and things, but when I post it, it won't update. It's permanently stuck and Edits:20. Could you tell me how to fix it? Thanks SuSpence95 04:23, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Evergreen Mills bazaar is a page I think should be merged with Evergreen Mills. But it has a redirect linked to it that comes from fallout and fallout 3 names Bazaar. What to do what to do?--Kingclyde 00:37, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

You Tube VidsEdit

I was thinking, most of the vids have an external link already in the article. I was thinking of removing the imbedded vid as long as it is the same vid as te link and renaming YouTube Videos to either External Links or Video Links. I prefer the External Links myself. I think it will help overall appearance and will help the pages load faster for some of our non-high speed internet users. What do you think?--Kingclyde 21:42, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

New editorEdit

I think it should be disabled, at least until they have fixed it inserting tons of empty lines everywhere. It's getting a bit annoying. The category tool is also enabled by default again. -- Porter21 (talk) 06:48, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

I've noticed that too. I remove as many empty lines as I can--Kingclyde 16:58, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
I requested it to be disabled throuh Special:Contact. Maybe you should do the same. Ausir 17:00, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Smithy, Rip Edit

Excellent. Now, the USS Ozymandias. We've got USS Olymandias. Ozymandias is written on it's hull, and is it's in-game title. Nitpicker of the Wastes 16:59, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Lever RifleEdit

I have a guy that says it is called Lever-Action Rifle. He moved the page. I moved it back and left a redirect. If it is indeed called Lever Action Rifle, then I need to move it again, but I don't think it is. I haven't been home to play it yet though.--Kingclyde 22:24, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

I don't have Point Lookout myself, but I have seen it referred to as both. Ausir 22:25, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
Seeing as I have a localized version, I can't help either. The name in my version would translate to "Lever-Action Repeating Rifle". -- Porter21 (talk) 22:33, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
It is "Lever-Action". Next time think twice before you block someone for moving a page to the correct name. Ausir 22:34, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
? I haven't blocked anyone. -- Porter21 (talk) 22:36, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
I was talking to Kingclyde, who blocked the guy who moved it. Ausir 22:36, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
Do you accept my reasoning? I thought I was doing a good thing. I have since unblocked him.--Kingclyde 22:38, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
Not really, given that vandals don't usually move pages to reasonably sounding names. There's bound to be lots of misspelt pages this soon after a DLC's release, and it's normal for users to fix that. Ausir 22:39, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

I'll just leave it alone then. --Kingclyde 22:42, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Everyone makes mistakes. Just try to be more careful with blocking next time. Ausir 22:43, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

strange was their a weapon call lever action rifle in the weapon mod kit it look and has the same color of the point lookout lever rifle?? --XFury745 17:35, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Is it possible to block people who don't have a wiki acount? TheMaintenanceGuy 20:56, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

How do I archive my talk page? I just deleted it all but I think they may be some useful stuff there.--Kingclyde 22:49, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Sweet thanks!--Kingclyde 22:58, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Feral Ghoul Reaver Edit

Wondering whether Feral Ghoul Reavers should be added to new creatures in Point Lookout, seeing as they exist there as well (same skin, same attack etc). Technically they are not "new" though as they were added in Broken Steel but then not everybody has all DLCs. What do you think? -- Porter21 (talk) 22:55, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

If people don't have Broken Steel it should be in new creatures if it adds them, which needs to be confrimed by someone who has Pt. Lookout and not Broken Steel. By the way it seems to me that the Feral Ghoul Reavers are easier to defeat in Point Lookout than in Broken Steel --Fallout3Expert 23:15, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

I think we should create a disambiguation page for Creeper and Creeper (Fallout 3). I can't ever figure out hpw to make a new page. I think you told me before but I can't remember.--Kingclyde 00:10, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Ok cool. Now that I saw you do it, I think I can remember that. Thanks!--Kingclyde 00:17, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Fallout demo Edit

Hmm, not sure - I think this might get a bit too granular because if we do it for FO1, we'll have to do it for other demos as well (let's say, stuff from the VB tech demo). -- Porter21 (talk) 17:54, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, the example was poorly chosen. I still think it's getting too granular but I guess if all the DLCs have own icons, so can demos. Guess that means I'll have to make an icon? -- Porter21 (talk) 21:32, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

Point Lookout Boardwalk Edit

I have point lookout for 360 and i was wondering if its just my version or if anybody else noticed that if you walk by "The Jerk" diner that there is a person stuck inside the building

or is my version bugged?

Wanna help out? Edit

I have noticed you make a lot of edits on regular basis.Soooo... I was wondering if you might want to make a contribution to this page User:Acdczombie/Fallout 3 Time Killers?Thank you for your time. Acdczombie 09:17, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

punga fruit Edit

i am new to fallout wikia so need help learnin how to edit page properly i just added a note about doc hoff selling punga fruit but i dont no how to add the links --Greeny1911 19:13, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

Madwolf4456 Edit

Hello Ausir, I'm the head bureaucrat at Gearspedia the Gears of War wikia, and , and User:Madwolf4456 who is a editor on your wikia made a questionable edit on our wikia. What is his history, like inserting vandalism or placing false information.--Jack Black 21:10, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
He seems to be a good editer here. (I'm only answering because Ausir is offline) May I ask of the nature of the edit? Fat Man Spoon 21:14, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

yh madwolf is a nice guy usually wat did he post that offended or annoyed u --Greeny1911 21:24, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

The edit he'd made ruin a template on a character. this was his edit.--Jack Black 21:45, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
Most likely it was a n00b mistake.--Jack Black 20:21, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Adminship Edit

Okay... here goes... I would like to apply for adminship. I have been increasingly annoyed at vandals on this site, most recently on Kingclyde's talk page. All the admins were offline, so the best we could do was remove the stuff for 20 minutes. I can be on the wiki almost all day, so can see most incidents, and are usally the first to see Vandal Pages, but the best I can do at the moment is add a 'Delete' tag to it. I hope you don't regret your decision. Thank you for your time,

Fat Man Spoon 15:11, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

I knew that would affect it. What does being a Rollback entail? Fat Man Spoon 18:43, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Ah, so if someone vandalises a page muliple time in a row, I can undo them all in one go? Fat Man Spoon 18:50, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Probably not gonna work.........butEdit

Im probably outta my fuckin' mind, i'd like to apply for adminship, or something, im getting seriously fucking pissed at the amount of fucking vandals appearing, it likes that fucking asshole maccy came back for round 2....i probably sound desperate but i ain't, PLus we need a new admin who can gladly not be an asshole or fuck up a whole bunch of vault pages and get blocked for wasting someone's time, but, if i cant be an admmin or whatever, then that will be okay. Butter 11:48, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Button Gwinnett Edit

Why was this page deleted? We have articles about other historical/pre-divergence figures if they're mentioned in Fallout games (Abraham Lincoln, for example). -- Porter21 (talk) 23:49, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Well, the reason I created the page in the first place was that articles linked to the robot article when clearly the historical person was meant - which is then a bit misleading. On second thought though, it's probably better to put a for-disambig to wikipedia on top of the robot page. And yeah, George Washington should go. Where was he referenced anyway? The article is only linked from the President disambig and as "see also" from Abraham Washington. -- Porter21 (talk) 00:12, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
Just noticed that the reason for the Washington article is apparently that his existence is hinted at in FO3. Bit of a no-brainer, isn't it? The divergence was after WW2, everything before is the same (except for some dev mess-ups I guess), so it's certain he existed. -- Porter21 (talk) 00:16, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Off-topic forum Edit

Yeah, good question. Not only the FO3 forum but also talk pages are recently swamped with unrelated chatter, not sure whether we want to encourage that. People should use the shoutbox widget if they want to chat on here to be honest. Maybe we should make the forum but at the same time be a bit more strict at least on the chatter on article talk pages. -- Porter21 (talk) 00:12, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Good, I was just looking into how to get my bot to archive them, saves me some work :P -- Porter21 (talk) 00:33, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
I guess that if we have the forum it'd be better to add it to the sidebar as well, otherwise they'll just keep putting the off-topic stuff in the other forums. -- Porter21 (talk) 00:58, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
Well, I think it helps with the ease of navigation if the category link at the bottom of the page leads back to the respective forum (where you can make new topics etc) instead of just throwing you to the category. I didn't notice that redirecting the categories also broke the "sort alphabetically" links; however, that can also be solved by replacing those links with [{{fullurl:{{FULLPAGENAME}}|redirect=no}} <span title="Sort alphabetically">Sort alphabetically</span>] which will bypass the redirect. -- Porter21 (talk) 11:11, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
I'm going to revert your reverts and change the sort link unless you have objections. -- Porter21 (talk) 14:02, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Blogs Edit

Well, I'd rather have people working on articles here rather than turning the site into some sort of "MySpace light" to be honest. The ratio of unrelated crap to actual article content in RC is bad enough already recently. That said, I'm not totally against it, maybe we should ask others what they think (since I'm aware that it might just be my underlying hatred for the useless web 2.0 social networking crap at work here ;)). -- Porter21 (talk) 09:41, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, they enabled it for all wikis which did not specifically opt out (there's a page at central wikia where you can do so). On a sidenote, I guess it'd be better to adapt the new header for user pages and the comment posting section to the general site theme, they look somewhat out of place. -- Porter21 (talk) 11:11, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
Using them for news is an interesting idea, a better way for newsposting is sorely needed (and it'd help with not having to post the same news multiple times like we have now for the main news and portals). However, there are a few things I don't like:
  1. Each comment appearing as a seperate item in "Recent changes" instead of being grouped like multiple edits to the same page.
  2. It's a bit space-wasting; now 3 news items need twice as much space on the front page as 10 news items did previously.
-- Porter21 (talk) 11:11, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
I'll play around with it when I have a bit more time (in the evening) but it should be possible to override the default width/alignment/float for the box-style view, so theoretically we should be able to put it everywhere we want. Regarding moving the contents section, when I wanted to do that for the main page redesign people weren't too fond of it if I recall correctly. It's fine with me though. I'll dabble with it all tonight. -- Porter21 (talk) 12:24, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
Adjusted user masthead and blog comments to our general color scheme (pending CSS update). Slight issue I noticed with the blogs, everything looks screwed up if you use the Monobook skin since blogs & user masthead weren't added for that skin. The "submit" button is missing from the comments page, i.e. you can't post any. You can create blogs but only if you find your way to the page manually (due to the masthead not being there). Basically excludes Monobook users from posting comments and partially from posting news. -- Porter21 (talk) 19:03, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I was just adding the problem there when I got an edit conflict because you had posted first ;) -- Porter21 (talk) 19:12, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
Well, my comment was a bit premature - you can post comments as there's a plain link for submitting (but no button, which is why I missed it initially). However, the bloglist views still look screwed up due to the missing CSS. -- Porter21 (talk) 19:34, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
It's a bit of a strange approach though - I understand not wanting to "bloat" the Monobook skin, however leaving people unable to access certain extension and leaving things looking screwed up is not really a good approach in my opinion. I should be able to fix up the screwed up look when I get the time but there's nothing I can do about the missing link for posting blogs. -- Porter21 (talk) 19:47, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Don't think adding it to the sidebar will work, as far as I know there's no magic word for the username and I'm not sure whether the sidebar supports magic words anyway. Regarding the placement of the news section, as I said I'm certainly not against it, I already wanted to do it last time ;) -- Porter21 (talk) 20:09, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Sometimes you don't see the wood for all the trees... Don't need magic words, there is a special page for creating blogs after all. Do you know whether it is possible to edit the "toolbox" section of the Monobook skin somehow? Logically, that'd be where the link should go. Oh, and don't worry about the news view, I'm still experimenting with the different variants. I'll probably turn it back sooner rather than later, I was just trying to see whether I could get a TOC out of it somehow but that doesn't seem possible. -- Porter21 (talk) 12:30, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
Guess if Monobook users want to add news, they can just use the links on the portal pages now. -- Porter21 (talk) 10:44, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Category toolEdit

By the way, is it just me or is that category tool a total pain in the ass? Ever since it got reenabled I have deleted 3-5 "category accidents" a day, not counting the redlinked cats which show up in "wanted categories". It's supposed to help new editors but a large chunk of them seem to mistake it for a way to add another section to the article. -- Porter21 (talk) 09:41, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

I' just thought I'd take the time to say hi to you buddy.OutcastBOS 18:52, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Pictures. Edit

Hi, I am a new user, and I was wondering if it would be possible to obtain permission to use a few of your pictures for another website, IMFDB. We have pages on the Fallout series weapons, which I am currently helping to build and screencaps help quite a bit. Of course I would mention where I got said pictures. Get back to me whenever you can, thanks! RedJedRevolver

Game icons Edit

Try doing a cache refresh (CTRL-Shift-R if you're on Firefox). I made some changes to optimize page load times, it's working normally for me though. If the cache refresh doesn't help, let me know which browser you're on and I'll check. -- Porter21 (talk) 18:16, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Good :) -- Porter21 (talk) 11:11, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Any Word? Edit

About PS3 DLC coming out today? The PSN store has yet to update and I can't get a straight answer from anyone. Spence 12:44, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Hmm... ok then. So nobody even knows if it could come out today? Spence 12:47, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Irwin's Farm Edit

I didn't delete it because I thought it didn't exist but because the article did not even have as much content as what you wrote on my talk page. -- Porter21 (talk) 14:26, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

I removed a few videos that I thought were redundant or not really true to their title. The guy who posts them asked me for my opinion but reverted the edits anyways before he got an answer. Example, Perforator and Metal Blaster video. It is titled obtaining the rifle but in reality, it is 10 minutes of shooting the gun. In my opinion, that is really useless. The first 10 seconds would be fine because it shows how to get it. We don't need the added 9:50 seconds of filler and "party people" music.--Kingclyde 20:50, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Locking a PageEdit

Is there a way to lock my user page so no one (even me) can edit it. I just went through hell trying to fix something and I think it's exactly how I want it. So can you or I lock it if you can?

Thank You! Spence 03:54, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

The Order Of The Dragon deletionEdit

hey shouldn't this page (order of the dragon) be deleted since it has nothing to do with the actual game?havoc131

If there isn't, there needs to be a page for mods, unless the creator had been told to move his idea somewhere else, as it kinda seemed like a good idea. I was also in the process of editing it while it was deleted.--Master of cheeZ 06:45, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

There are a Fallout Modding and a Fan Fiction wiki here at wikia, both of which are more appropriate for that article than ours, which is about canon information from the Fallout games. -- Porter21 (talk) 06:53, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

K, i understand, that guy really shoulda asked around before posting that.

Vault-Tec Advanced Power Armor Edit

Does Vault-Tec Advanced Power Armor even exist? Just wondering because someone removed the link from Template:Navbox power armor and I can't find it in gamebanshee's DB either. -- Porter21 (talk) 06:56, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I'd agree about Master Mold being reliable. I was just a bit unsure because gamebanshee is usually reliable, too (they list other hidden stuff like the Meat Cannon, for example). But then, fringe games like this are bound to have incomplete information about them I guess. -- Porter21 (talk) 07:22, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
Since we're at FOBOS stuff anyway - what about the Tesla armor? The disambig states the Tesla Armor in FOBOS is the Vault-Tec Power Armor but according to Gamebanshee, it's a seperate armor. On the other hand, Template:Navbox armors FOBOS links to Tesla metal armor. What is it now? -- Porter21 (talk) 09:03, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Main page / news Edit

I've moved the discussion to Forum:Mainpage MKII so it's easier to keep track. -- Porter21 (talk) 08:39, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

Are we putting glitches and exploits back in articles. I'm starting to look like the ass that gets all my edits reverted even though I'm following prior discussions--Kingclyde 00:12, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

Portal newsEdit

I've switched all portals to the blog-style news now. Currently they're set up to pull news from Category:The Vault news and the respective game news category. The downside is that in the long run, the portal news for the older games will mostly be populated by general wiki news. If you remove the Vault news cat currently though, the news sections for most of them will be empty (since our old news weren't copied over) and people who use the portals as entry pages will miss out on wiki news. Not sure what to do, I'll leave it up to you :P -- Porter21 (talk) 10:44, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Ok. I'll make empty blogs with the correct dates and titles for this year's news (see User:Porter21/sandbox1) and we can then fill them up with proper content. Should be faster than manually editing the xml file. -- Porter21 (talk) 12:13, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
What do you think about "retconning" (i.e. using the import technique to date them back) a few news posts about the older games to fill up their portal news sections? Every portal except for the mainpage and the FO3 one is set to display 3 news items. News posts about the Fallout Trilogy release and sales could fill up the new sections for FO1, FO2 and FOT. I'm a bit at a loss for possible VB and FOBOS posts though unless you want to go way back and add news posts about VB cancellation and design document leaks. Although I believe that there were some interviews about both VB and FOBOS not too far back, maybe we could use those. -- Porter21 (talk) 14:07, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
By the way, I think we can save ourselves the effort of categorizing each news item in both the game-specific and the generic news category by modifying the main page news like this, i.e. setting it to pull from all the specific news categories. -- Porter21 (talk) 20:32, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
Simply make an "Other news" category then? :) -- Porter21 (talk) 07:14, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
Done that and removed old news from general News category. On a sidenote, do we need Blog:News? It's basically the same as The Vault:News. I'd just redirect it but apparently pages in the blog namespace cannot be edited directly (my bot can't work on any blogs either btw :( ).
Reverted it all back, would be nice if they mentioned such limitations on the respective help page (just like the limit of 25 for user blog listings is not mentioned - see your user blog page, it cuts off after 5 pages of 5 items although there should be 28)... -- Porter21 (talk) 09:58, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Midsouth BrotherhoodEdit

The Elders wasn't agree with the decision of Rhombus, I imagine that it's consion decision but not considered more by the original Brotherhood of Steel, like Wasteland Brotherhood of Steel. Changing icons is a way to make their own decision. The Texas Brotherhood of Steel is a good names and better. Sorry for the quality of the icons, images for Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel are quite rare, I find it better if I replace it. Itachou 13:48, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

How ironic that I got it right the first time then. Oh well, I will just move the page. Wejer2 01:42, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
Haha, I see you did the work for me after all. Anyway, it has been nice getting to know you. I am looking forward to our next meeting. Wejer2 01:45, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Named creatures/robotsEdit

I saw you changed the categories for Four Score and Ruzka. How exactly are named creatures supposed to be categorized - in just a character category and a race category (like Four Score) or in a character and a creature category (like Ruzka)? Named robots are usually categorized as both characters and robots but I guess the same question applies to them. -- Porter21 (talk) 07:14, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Another categorization question: What's the general policy, most specific category only? Aiming primarily at organizations, religions, FO3 unmarked/DLC quests and FO3 unmarked locations - all pages in those categories are usually categorized in both their own and its parent category. -- Porter21 (talk) 08:10, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
Thinking about it, I think the most consistent way to do it is to apply the same category scheme for human characters to all characters/creatures with names, i.e. game-specific character cat, "race" cat, location cat. After all, humans are also just a subtype of creatures really. So, for Four Score we'd have "Point Lookout non-player characters"/"Dogs"/"Temple of the Union characters" or for John Henry Eden "Fallout 3 non-player characters"/"ZAX units"/"Raven Rock characters". Seems to make the most sense to me.
Regarding categories, "if the category is not too cluttered" really only applies to religions and maybe organizations from my list of examples. Both FO3 quests and FO3 locations are fairly large as is. In general, I think "most specific only" would be better - to make finding stuff in the subcategories easier we could always make an overview page with the help of the categorytree extension, for example: <categorytree hideroot=on namespaces="-">Fallout organizations</categorytree> show all pages in the Fallout organizations category on another page (the italics can be removed with some CSS editing). -- Porter21 (talk) 09:55, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
Need some input regarding naming of the categories. I've made all robot race categories "<type> robots", although the convention of the "creature races" was simply "<type>" in plural. It does look a bit strange with things like "Sentry Bot robots" but I thought "Mister Handies" looked just as weird. Not sure which is better. Also need a better name for Category:Sentient computer as it doesn't really fit all computers in there (like the Shi Emperor, doesn't sound like it's sentient) but I also did not want to make an extra category for each type of computer (since the only type to appear multiple times are ZAX units, the others are usually one of a kind). Any suggestions? -- Porter21 (talk) 17:18, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
I've moved the robots cats to "units" and renamed the computer cat to "computer units" as well. Kind of "lame" but there's no better name I could think of. -- Porter21 (talk) 09:47, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

FOBOS dateEdit

There isn't confirmed date for Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel but I think it took effect in 2208 as marked in the Timeline, give that being the date from which the Vault Dweller from Arroyo to the town of Carbon. Itachou 10:32, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

"Did you know" sectionEdit

MikaelGrizzly suggested we add a "Did you know?" section to the frontpage. I think it shouldn't be a problem to it either directly above or below the "Helping out" section, just wanted to hear your opinion. We're planning to have it randomly pull one of a couple of lists, and I think the individual lists shouldn't have more than 5 or 6 items each.

However, we need a starting pool of items for the first few lists (we can always add more later). I've started one with a couple of things that came to my mind at User:Porter21/didyouknow but it'd be nice if you could contribute a few as well :) -- Porter21 (talk) 09:47, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Added the section to the main page, we still need more items though - currently there are only 3 options per item. Explanations on how to add new items can be found at Template:Wikiportal:Main/Did you know. -- Porter21 (talk) 08:20, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Advanced Power Armor Mk IIEdit

It would use a different name to differentiate more easily. If we speak, we don't know if we are talking about one of Fallout 2 and Fallout 3. It may be "Western" and "Eastern" or "2241" and "2277" before their name, or use the two. You can see what is best for you dear friends =) but I really think that a different name is more appropriate. Light-Revan 11:23, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

How many? Edit

How many edits would you need to make to be come an admin? --LoneMerc101 12:34, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks Edit

BOS perksEdit

Yes, they are marking skills in inventory, but it looks much has perks. I think it is a mistake from the developers, they probably are using the therm "skill" to be better understood and not confuse people. For example Sadist or Energy Charge does nothing has skills Fallout style typical of Medicine, Science or Repair. Itachou 21:27, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Ok, as you want. I have the impression that you are angry, I just to be useful. Itachou 21:49, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Rate dear friends =), sorry for these small problem Itachou 21:52, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Advanced Power ArmorEdit

Anyway do what you want, whenever I edit, there is edit by a type just after, it's afflicting. All that I say is true and if you get into the developers stupidity, that is heartbreaking. If he truly believes really create the same armor, it's really a bunch of incompetent and looser, same a modders were able to get the original : How can you consion that kind of thing, it's anything. In any case, I them fuck deeply for this mistake shit and I never give up! I will prove to everyone that this is not the same. Their shit is nothing compared to the original of Fallout 2. Average english ? sorry I'm French !!! Light-Revan16:12, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Ok, But my real problem is to give them a nickname to differentiate from one another to distinguish them, to know what you're talking about if we discuss it. Strange that you don't like "Western" and "Eastern", you have put identical style for Midwestern Brotherhood Advanced Power Armor. Otherwise add "2241 version" or "2277 version" in their name or something ("Classic" or "Old" and "New" for another exemple), just a name created by the fan to differentiate, please. Light-Revan 21:37, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Ho! Ausir, thank you very much, sorry to all those taking heads. I really wanted her to my heart. Now that of Fallout 2 is known as "APA MKII 2241 Version" and that of Fallout 3 is known as "APA MKII 2277 Version. I will also change the Alien Blaster, being given that the 2 are different, it don't have the same design and does not use the same ammunition. Thank you again for your humanises. Light-Revan 22:02, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

References Edit

How do you add references at the end of an article? --LoneMerc101 16:30, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Alien BlasterEdit

Ok, no problem for me but a little different name, for example "Old Alien Blaster" for that of Fallout 2 would be more appropriate. But not too serious to him, many people call as her without having to notify you enough but I stop to bother you with my bullshit for now! good evening =) Light-Revan 22:16, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Crowley Edit Edit

The info I removed is covered in the linked-to quest article. I thought it better-belonged there. If the duplication is fine, I can put it back. What do you think?--Gothemasticator 22:24, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Honestly....? Edit

If Aleister Crowley belongs on the page then so does the rest of the trivia, the bold and italics are the removed parts.

Mr. Crowley is possibly named after Aleister Crowley, a famous British writer and occultist, the subject of Ozzy Osbourne's 1980 single "Mister Crowley".More evidence that points to this is "Oh Mister Crowley did you talk to the dead?" a line from the song, whereas Crowley (the character) was not attacked by the feral ghouls which are mostly called zombies or the living dead.Crowley being a ghoul he could have talked or otherwise communicated his way out. The song also contains the line, "Uncovering things that were sacred" , which in this case would refer to the T-15b Power Armor, which is the strongest armour in the game.

That new person seems to to have very poor logic skills his argument is if it predates the game it does not belong in the trivia... seems like someone needs to removed alot of trivia then any volunteers?Big Nig 09:08, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Official? Edit

Is this an official fallout wiki?--LoneMerc101 20:03, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

It doesn't really matter, I was just on the Elder Scrolls wiki and noticed the Unofficial part and my curiousity sparked about this wiki. --LoneMerc101 20:10, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

No, it's not. Technically Unofficial. But it's the best you will find on the web. --RedTracer7 06:23, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Dangers of only 1 BuercratEdit

By no means am I asking for any power or anything of that nature. I also am not very knowledgeable about the upper workings of the Wiki system, but is it not dangerous that you are the only Bueracrat? What if you stop showing up? Or (sorry) die? Does the Wiki die? Or does the fact that the system is connected to other Wikis mean that someone would be able to step in and promote another member(s)? Just a bit afraid of putting too many eggs in one basket. --RedTracer7 06:23, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Fallout New Vegas Release Date? Edit

i was recently looking to buy fallout 1 and 2 on (might not matter which localized version it is since ireland aint all that special) and when i looked at the search results fallout new vegas was there with a september release date, and yes it is for 2009, maybe they got the year wrong? -The Ranger 16:04, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Probably. M471/952G 16:07, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Ad revenue Edit

Did you know that the Vault generates roughly 40k $ per month in ad revenue? Found that an interesting tidbit :) -- Porter21 (talk) 18:50, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I can imagine it was rather hard to find a host before FO3 came out. Pageviews (which is what ad revenue depends on, 1m pageviews = roughly 1k $ in ad revenue) really exploded after the FO3 release. There were maybe 2-3m per month at the beginning of October 08, and that was already a number which had doubled since July 08, leading up to the FO3 release. At the end of November, the Vault was at over 50m pageviews per month. It hit its all-time high at the end of January at maybe 55m pageviews. From there, it dropped to 28m at the end of March and went back up to 40m at the end of May which we're also at now after a small lull. Basically, it depends on game/DLC releases quite a lot, so we can expect it to go into decline once the last DLC and the GOTY is out. Then it'll depend on New Vegas' success when and how much it'll go back up. Although it'll still be higher than in October for quite a while I guess.
Of course, it's not all profit - Wikia has to pay for traffic and server upkeep after all and they'll also cover it in times when there are not as many visitors. So it's not that much of a bad deal :) Just found the prices for ad revenue and the number it depends on and thought I'd share, I thought it's interesting that we're not that far behind the "big" wikia wikis like wowwiki currently (they have 67m pageviews, of course that's a somewhat moderate number for them - their high is somewhere around 120m). If you want to take a look yourself, the Vault's pageview stats can be found here. -- Porter21 (talk) 19:54, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, that's understandable. On the other hand, it's a lot less hassle this way :) And you don't have to worry about being able to pay for the upkeep in times when there's not many visitors. Plus it's not really sure a single person/wiki could realistically charge the same prices for ads as a company like wikia can. -- Porter21 (talk) 20:11, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Ranking Edit

All this talk about Bureaucrats it like rankings in the army. I'm just a noob editor lol. Actually ranks would be cool to have on this wiki you should get premoted after every 100 edits. --LoneMerc101 19:22, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

What links here Edit

Another thing: in the last update wikia removed the "What links here" link from the toolbox and moved it to the page footer. I added it back to the toolbox because personally I use it a lot (and the location at the bottom is quite impractical on longer pages). However, since that's mostly because of template/admin stuff I'm not sure whether it should really be there or whether I'm being selfish :) Just wanted to check back what you think. -- Porter21 (talk) 20:16, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Guess we could add that as well (provided it's not as bugged as "What links here", that one made all links behind it in the list disappear on pages where it wasn't shown). -- Porter21 (talk) 20:27, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
Hmm, doesn't work right if I add it. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but it doesn't seem to retrieve the name of the current page correctly. -- Porter21 (talk) 20:42, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Another admin? Edit

Alright, one last thing and you'll be spared by me for 2 weeks ;) What do you think about having another sys-op? I think we're a bit understaffed on that front as the sys-ops aside from Kingclyde, MikaelGrizzly, you and me are not too active currently. -- Porter21 (talk) 17:18, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Hmm, maybe Sentinel 101? Fairly constantly active, decent contributions. -- Porter21 (talk) 18:49, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Master Mold would be fine as well. They'd probably both need a little briefing in categorization though :P Sorry, couldn't resist. I have no other possible candidates to suggest, Nitpicker and FatManSpoon have dropped their activity lately (plus there was this little incident I guess). -- Porter21 (talk) 19:08, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
OK, so let's make Master Mold and Sentinel admins, if they don't mind, of course. If Nitpicker and FatManSpoon want adminship, they can always make adminship requests in the forum for community approval too. Ausir(talk) 20:06, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Ok, fine with me. I'll ask them and tell them to send their reply to you since I'm gonna be away for a while. -- Porter21 (talk) 20:20, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Fallout 2 Special WeaponsEdit

Hi Ausir. I think you know that there are several special weapon in Fallout 2 as Armor or Weapons of Frank Horrigan. I wondered if it was possible to add on The Vault in creating a new category in Weapon and Armor, named "Unusable" or "Special". Thank you in advance for your answer dear friends ! Itachou 21:36, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Hmm... there are still many, I'll list them :

  • Frank Horrigan Power Armor
  • Frank Horrigan Plasma Machine Gun
  • Frank Horrigan Big Knife
  • Heavy Dual Minigun (Turret)
  • Dual Minigun (Turret)
  • Dual Plasma Canon (Turret)
  • Flame Breath (Gecko fire attack)
  • Phazer
  • Gecko Claw
  • Deathclaw Claw
  • Zip Gun
  • Robo Melee Weapon 1
  • Robo Melee Weapon 2
  • Robo Rocket Launcher
  • Special Boxer Weapon (Boxer PNJ melee attack)
  • Black Hole

They are all playable from a inventory editor, equivalent to the console command for Fallout 3 in fact. Itachou 12:15, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

Vault Boy and other stuff? Edit

I keep finding these box with either a vault boy or Chuck Norris and saying things like "This User is Crazy." and so on, on other user pages. How do you make those? --LoneMerc101 21:12, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Canon template Edit

Probably. Guess it's just a habit of mine to insert the canon template wherever Tactics is concerned; especially with a lot of the real-world weapons from there I find it necessary. -- Porter21 (talk) 22:11, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Ausir. I will create a french website about the world of Fallout and I wondered if I could use some information and a few pictures of The Vault. Of course, I mention the name of the Wiki. Its would be really nice dear friends =) Itachou 13:09, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

I was about to redirect it, but ok thanks.

Adminship requests Edit

I think we should require a minimum amount of edits in the article namespace for adminship requests, possibly in combination with a minimum time of activity at this wiki. I know edit count isn't everything, but I don't think making people hope their request will be considered when they have less than 50 (arbitrary number) article edits is necessary either. -- Porter21 (talk) 23:35, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Not sure on the numbers though. 500 edits/3 months? -- Porter21 (talk) 23:58, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, that's what I meant by "article namespace" edits. We can include category and template namespace as well, fine by me. -- Porter21 (talk) 00:27, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
I've added it to The Vault:Administrators. On a sidenote, I've made a small template to produce an ' which does not interfere with italic/bold markup, {{'}}. -- Porter21 (talk) 00:55, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes but the Fallout 2 Restoration Project is a semi-official achievement with more than 90% of the components of the official content not included. They are part of the history of Fallout, what do you think ? Itachou 11:07, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Ok for the game Falllout 2 but for the world of Fallout, it cann't be regarded as its unofficial. Can I at least publish the maps of places ? For what we see has its looks in the world of Fallout. Itachou 11:46, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Rankings Power ArmorEdit

For the "Power Armor" page, then I make a different classification of Power Armor compared to their AC and DR ? Speaking of course of the world of Fallout, not a particular game. His would be well for this page. Itachou 16:47, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

I will give just an example. Our basic point is the T51b, it appears in Fallout 1 and Fallout 3. All Power Armor are lower than in the T51b Fallout 3 is also lower than those that are better in Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics. Here is for example the ranking list :

  • Tribal T-45d Power Armor (35 DR)
  • T-45d Power Armor (40 DR)
  • MP-47/A Prototype Medic Power Armor (40 DR + administration of Med-X)
  • Advanced Power Armor Mark II 2277 Version (40 DR, better than T-45d according to the Brotherhood menber)
  • Tesla Power Armor (43 DR)
  • Winterized T-51b Power Armor (45 DR)
  • T-51b Power Armor (50 DR / 25 AC)
  • Hardened T-51b Power Armor (25 AC)
  • Enclave Hellfire Armor (50 DR, Fire Resistance)
  • Midwestern Brotherhood Power Armor (30 AC, but less Damage Resistance and Damage Threshold compared to the APA 2241 Version)

Recent news tabs Edit

When I go to the Fallout 3 portal, or any other fallout portal I can't read the main article because the recent news tab is overlapping it. This may be due to the fact that my computer is constantly on Safe Mode because of a problem with it. But im just saying to see if anyone else is having this problem.--LoneMerc101 21:18, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Since you said that your computer is in "permanent safe mode", I assume that your screen resolution is pretty low? If so, the overlap is to be expected since the site is concipated for a minimum resolution of 1024*768. At lower resolutions the right bar will overlap the left one due to the way wikia set up the columns (the whole issue is related to the ads), nothing I can do about that. If your screen resolution is 1024*768 or higher, I need to know which browser you're using and a screenshot. -- Porter21 (talk) 00:23, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
As suspected, it was the result of a low screen resolution. I've added a workaround to Monaco and Monobook; portal pages now have a minimum width which will ensure readability. In turn, this also means that you'll get a horizontal scrollbar on those pages if your resolution is too low. -- Porter21 (talk) 11:47, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Vault 74Edit

Is this good to include it in the Vault page  ? It is not mentioned in the main computer of the Vault-Tec headquarters or in the computers of the Brotherhood of Steel and there is no download on fallout 3 official site [1], it's little strange isn't it ? Itachou 10:25, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Weapons info box editEdit

Is there a way to edit the weapons infobox to say GECK damage instead of just damage. Being that we use the GECK to figure that out, I won't have to keep repeating myself to people who think it should be something differant. I don't know how to do it and if you agree with me can you make the edit? Thanks--Kingclyde 01:02, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Maybe we should remove the damage rating or clarify it. I posted an example on the talk page of the xualong rifle with a screenshot of my in game damage. It was in the 90's. We should clarify it or just remove it altogether in my opinion. What do you think?--Kingclyde 04:23, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

You are not obligated to clarify it ya know, I think it's fine the way it is. [Composite 4] (My Talk)

I asked if we should clarify it. I personally tire of reverting edits to the damage part of the info box. The damage article isn't all that clear either.--Kingclyde 06:26, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
The "damage" field isn't from the GECK as far as I know, it's the in-game displayed damage. "dmg/projectile" is from the GECK. Ausir(talk) 11:14, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
It's supposed to be the damage displayed in the Pip-Boy for a character with 100 in the relevant weapon skill but without any damage-altering perks. The underlying issue is that the damage in the GECK is not reliable (as is the GECK DPS) and so far there's no method to calculate a reliable damage rating from the GECK values. There used to be a seperate "damage in the GECK" field but it was removed in the last template update. -- Porter21 (talk) 11:34, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
Should I not worry about it then? That kinda makes all the damage info unreliable due to the wide amount of variables. Plus I see peeps changing the damage to numbers they can only get with 100% skill and a perk or two. It just will be confusing after awhile. My head is starting to hurt!:)--Kingclyde 16:12, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
It should be the value with 100% skill and no damage-altering perks. Any changes to that should be reverted. Ausir(talk) 17:30, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

If you don't want anybody changing that aspect of the infobox I suggest making a policy regarding it. [Composite 4] (My Talk)

Sorry to bother you sir, but I'm afraid I might be in a pickle. On Fallout 3, under unknown circumstances, it appears nothing despawns. Along with this fact is when the same enemy spawns, if you loot the corpse of the old enemy, it acts as though you are looting/pickpocketing the new foe. I'm running on 360, and would love assistance. Once more, sorry for the trouble. But, alas, I do not know where to seek help. And I'm sure you're very busy, so do not think you need to respond to me. Dead-end pagesEdit

Do we need this page? None It's kinda obvious and I can fix the broken links if you decide to delete it. Thanks.--Kingclyde 00:39, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

It's probably a leftover from the time before the new infoboxes with optional fields. The "ammunition" fields in the weapon templates auto-link their contents and if the field is mandatory, you have no choice but to enter something, even for melee weapons. The fields should just be set to "empty" and the page deleted in my opinion.
If you stumble upon a weapon template in which setting the ammo parameter does not hide the respective table line, please let me know and I'll fix it. Not sure whether all the older templates were properly adapted in that regard. -- Porter21 (talk) 00:57, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Guides Edit

Are we going to allow people to put up guides in the article namespace or should they rather use blogs/user pages for that? -- Porter21 (talk) 01:03, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Canonboxes Edit

I'd like to change the look of the canonboxes to something like this. I think the current design wastes a lot of space in articles; the new one is a lot more compact and less obtrusive. Just wanted to hear your opinion first before I make the switch. An example of how it'd look in an article can be found at User:Porter21/sandbox1 (just ignore the altered mbox, that was just an experiment). -- Porter21 (talk) 16:41, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

I know that there are varying degrees of canonicity - I mostly chose my examples for design purposes (logo dimensions primarily). The template had two degrees for the "canon" parameter, "not" and "semi" and originally there was also a parameter for adding custom text. Seems like the latter got lost somewhere along the way.
Anyway, I've modified the template, see sandbox and/or template page. Basically there are three parameter now: "image", "source" and "canon". The latter produces a predefined message which is added after "This info is based on" - I think this way it's easiest to maintain a consistent wording. After all, there can't be that many degrees of canonicity. In addition, if an unnamed parameter is given/set to "end", the template produces a "info based on 'source' ends here" message. This will later allow us to simply use (for example) {{FOBOS}} and {{FOBOS|end}} instead of having a seperate template for the end. -- Porter21 (talk) 19:25, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
We'll have to see about the possible entries for the additional text - I guess that's more your department than mine ;) Currently I have:
  • contradict = contradicts canon sources
  • unconfirmed = has not been confirmed by canon sources
  • default = is not considered canon
-- Porter21 (talk) 19:53, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

I've decided to make a new template ({{Sourcebox}}) instead of modifying Template:Canonbox. This way we can also use it for stuff like spoiler tags which are really more about informing the reader about the source of info than about article management (which is what Mboxes are intended for). I'll gradually switch the old canonboxes over; it would be nice if you could let me know which additional text you want for each canon template. -- Porter21 (talk) 12:06, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Thinking about it, shouldn't "has not been confirmed by canon sources" be the default text? If it has been confirmed by a canon source, a sourcebox isn't needed in the first place, is it? Also, I think FO1concept and FO2 should be "contradict" by default going by their current text. I agree that there should be a switch for contradict (unless we want to have seperate "end templates" for contradicting and non-contradicting?), I'll work on it later. -- Porter21 (talk) 12:30, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
All canon templates switched over. Sourcebox now supports both "contradict" and "end" as unnamed parameters; "contradict" overrides the specified text. -- Porter21 (talk) 08:47, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
What about Template:VB-old? It's only used one one page as well (Matthias Presper). Although sourceboxes can be used for non-lore related stuff as well (I've broadened the scope a bit), I'd tend to agree about VB-SPECIAL and JESimple. After all, the SPECIAL system tends to be a bit different for each game, it's not really something readers need to be aware of since it doesn't conflict with anything. I can have the bot strip these templates out if you want. -- Porter21 (talk) 12:34, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
Yup, Matthias Presper should be merged. The NPC was just altered not cut out completely (which would warrant an own page from my point of view. The bot is currently removing the Simple and VB-SPECIAL templates, I'll set it on removing Tactics and FOBOS from perk pages as well later. -- Porter21 (talk) 12:49, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
All done (there was just one FOBOS/FOT page which had a sourcebox). -- Porter21 (talk) 13:07, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Stubs Edit

I think we should alter the setup for stubs. Currently we have one general stub template, a general and 3 subtypes for FO3. Instead, we should only have a general one and one for each game the wiki covers. I also think that stub templates should go at the top of an article like all the other mboxes, maybe this way people will actually remove them when they're not necessary anymore (one can hope). -- Porter21 (talk) 13:07, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Alright, I just thought it looks better if it's up there with the other boxes. Primarily I'm looking for a way to get people to remove stub tags from articles which aren't stubs; we have far too many of these "non-stub-stubs". -- Porter21 (talk) 17:35, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
I've created a stub template for each of our "main" games, see Category:Stub templates. In addition, I've merged the various FO3 stub tags into the general one and altered the naming scheme (i.e. it's now "stub-FO3" instead of "FO3-stub"). The latter I did primarily because I think that way works better with the template auto-complete feature (typing in "stub" will bring up all the game-specific variants whereas it wouldn't with the old scheme). I'm currently having the bot altering the existing stub tags to the new scheme.
Not sure whether I should have the bot exchange general stub tags for game-specific ones based on categories; after all, there's quite some overlap between FO1 and FO2 and it might end being wrong more often than not. Also not sure whether I could get that done tonight at all, seeing that I'll leave for vacation tomorrow morning - but that's a different matter I guess ;) -- Porter21 (talk) 18:14, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

Mboxes Edit

Regarding the alignment of mboxes, the left-aligned boxes look weird on higher/wide-screen resolutions in my opinion and it makes for a more evenly distributed layout if they are centered. Matter of opinion I guess. -- Porter21 (talk) 17:35, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Dutch Vault -- Admin rights Edit

` Ok so I worked on the Tool cabinet page and added the game and image category. I made the first tool cabinet bolded and Fallout 3 in the italics and link. At the category I added the storage/ container. Is that everything? Spence 15:00, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I fixed that. Spence 15:02, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Sister wikis box Edit

Well, we could just modify the existing box - just throw out the "Other gaming wikis from wikia" section and split the existing "Other Fallout wikis" into "The Vault in other languages" and "Other Fallout wikis/sister wikis". -- Porter21 (talk) 17:35, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Small flags and logos shouldn't be a problem. Not sure whether the footer should be in a box though, I think it wouldn't look good since you'll have whitespace between the footer box and either the left or the right column. We could certainly remove the wikia logo, they have one at the top left of each page after all. I'll see what I can come up with. -- Porter21 (talk) 19:19, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
First draft at User:Porter21/sandbox1. By the way, which standard do the language codes here at wikia use? Just asking because two of the wikis don't match ISO-3166, namely the Korean one (since Korea is a split country, each part of which has its own abbreviation I guess "ko" is fine there) and the Swedish one ("se" is the ISO-code for Sweden, "sv" is Slovakia). -- Porter21 (talk) 08:57, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Fair enough, I already suspected it was a different standard. I just noticed the discrepancies when looking for the flags. -- Porter21 (talk) 10:54, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Race categories Edit

Fine with me, maybe we should do that for all creature-character categories. I'll have the bot do it - will probably take a while, Category:Humans is one of the biggest categories we have. -- Porter21 (talk) 19:23, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Super mutants and Humans has been moved, I'll be doing the others later today. -- Porter21 (talk) 07:05, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
I would've sent you a message about that soon as well, I didn't like it much either. The only purpose of these categories was to "bridge" back to Category:Robots and computers/Category:Creatures. I was thinking about having generalized "Animal characters" and "Robot characters" categories (which are linked back to Category:Creatures and Category:Robots and computers) and then only having subcategories of these for creatures/robots of which more than one named specimen appears in the games. That would spare us loads of useless categories. The only one left out cold would be Seymour because it's technically a plant. -- Porter21 (talk) 12:18, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
The pages of the creature/robot itself would also have gone in these categories so technically they would've had a subcategory AND one page :P -- Porter21 (talk) 12:21, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Not sure what to do with Category:Trogs/Category:Trog characters. The only one article in them is Billy-Bob. Techically trogs are mutated humans, so should he go in Category:Human characters if there are not enough articles for an own category? In the same vein, should Category:Ghoul characters and Category:Super mutant characters be subcategories of Category:Human characters? -- Porter21 (talk) 12:54, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Mariposa/V87 super mutants Edit

Well, the portals are supposed to be starting points for game-specific content. To me it makes more sense if they link to the article about the game-specific variety. -- Porter21 (talk) 20:46, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Maybe the game-specific articles should have own biology sections. After all, if they were identical we wouldn't need seperate articles in the first place imo - Mariposa mutants are more gray-ish, usually more intelligent and created by the Mariposa strain of FEV while Vault 87 ones are yellow, not as intelligent, grow dumber and bigger as they age etc. -- Porter21 (talk) 07:00, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Feel free to, I'm not that attached to it. I'll have to say though that currently the whole super mutant article setup does not make a lot of sense to me; especially the Mariposa mutant article is basically just a subsection of the general one, i.e. everything that's in the supposedly specific article is also in the general one (which is just a recipe for having conflicting info later on). -- Porter21 (talk) 10:54, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Mwals413 --Admin application-- Edit

Hi, since this wikia has been created I've been very involved in the expansion of it. I would love to be an administrator of 'The Vault'. I take the site very seriously, and as a major Fallout fan, I use it every day. I've referred every Fallout player that I know to 'the Vault', and I've contributed to many articles, even created a few. I help out as much as I can, and I'm always willing to help more. please consider allowing me to be an administrator of your wiki.

Read the admin page, you need roughly 500 edits on the main, template, and categories. SuSpence95 06:36, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

MZ article creation Edit

I've made a small auxiliary page to help with the influx of new pages which is due once MZ is released, found at The Vault:Create Mothership Zeta article. It preloads a basic skeleton for the page title you enter which then only needs to be filled out. I think this will spare us some work and ensure all pages have the proper basic structure. Feedback would of course be appreciated.

The page basically works similar to how the forum pages work; it preloads a certain template for each type. The individual templates can be accessed from the page; if you could review them and see whether something is missing, this would be great. After all, every mistake made in the templates will appear in quite a few pages later on so it's better to double-check. To view the templates you either have to edit them or transclude them somewhere - I've made their content includeonly so they don't show up in the maintenance/article categories. -- Porter21 (talk) 19:48, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I tried to link it up but the interface messages on Special:CreatePage do not seem to support links. Oh well, I guess we can always adapt the setup for more general use later and put it on the Community Portal. -- Porter21 (talk) 21:14, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
I guess we could add it when the add-on is out for a day or two. If we're gonna use it publically I'll have to make a few modifications first (such as removing the view/edit links and sys-op-protecting the page "layouts", there's high vandalism potential there), I originally only intended to make life easier for the sys-ops (I'm selfish, I know :P). -- Porter21 (talk) 21:29, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
That requires the CreatePage extension (w:c:help:Help:CreatePage). -- Porter21 (talk) 22:56, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
It's pretty neat in principle but it'll require quite a bit of work to set up. It would sure help with giving articles a more uniform layout. -- Porter21 (talk) 23:09, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Good idea using the site notice :) -- Porter21 (talk) 08:40, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, worked pretty well - I think we only had one page created without the preformatted layout. I think it'd be good if we generalize the concept eventually, it makes it easier to properly contribute for people who are new to the Vault and simply don't know all the templates/layout conventions. -- Porter21 (talk) 22:32, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Vault TR templates Edit

Ogly asked me to help with moving templates to Vault TR, using the bot. The bot can't work across wikis unfortunately, so that is out. What we can do is export the templates with Special:Export here and import them via Special:Import over there. Shouldn't be much hassle since Special:Export lets you export whole categories at a time. However, you need sysop rights to use Special:Import so either you'll have to do it yourself or you'll have to give me sysop rights (temporarily). -- Porter21 (talk) 20:41, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for adminship!Edit

Image copyright Edit

I made some new copyright tags to make it more obvious which one to choose for game screenshots (since a lot of people get that wrong), {{Fallout image}}, {{Fallout 3 image}} and {{Game image}}. I was wondering whether it was worth it to have the bot re-tag the images in the game-specific image categories (like Category:Fallout images) with the new copyright tags. It might tag a select few wrong but for the vast majority the new ones are more appropriate. Thoughts? -- Porter21 (talk) 10:50, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

The bot's been working on it for a while. For FO3 images, I've let it tag the images without copyright tags and replace fairuse tags with Fallout 3 image. It's currently working on FO1 images. Is the copyright text for {{Fallout image}} ok? I wasn't sure who holds the copyrights for FO1/FO2. I was also wondering whether I should make specific tags for other games such as FOT or FOBOS or whether I should just leave it at using {{Game image}} for that. -- Porter21 (talk) 21:18, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Alien Worker Edit

Is an Alien Worker a character or a creature? :) -- Porter21 (talk) 22:32, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, that's why I'm a bit unsure whether I should just merge it with the Alien article, make an own creature page or create a character one. They don't seem to be biologically different from normal aliens, they just wear a red suit instead of a white one and a couple of them seem to be non-hostile to the player. Opposed to the captain, they're not unique however. -- Porter21 (talk) 22:41, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

2 Questions Edit

1. Is it possible to give certain new users privilages (without making them a sysop) so that they may still be able to make edits even though an article is protected?

2. Can we have a small quick info page for new ysers or unregistered users who are making edits? Just some points they should follow so they don't screw up articles?

That's all. --Clean Up 00:33, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

Dialogue files Edit

With all the dialogue files which need wikification and seeing that it'll take years at the current speed to get them all done, I was wondering whether we could maybe speed it all up by compiling a list of key words for FO1 (and another one for FO2), have the bot link them up in all of the dialogue files and call it a day? -- Porter21 (talk) 15:54, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

I see your point, I was mainly trying to get rid of all the dialogue files swamping the wikify category. They tend to drown out regular articles which need fixing. -- Porter21 (talk) 17:50, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
I guess - new mbox and have the bot replace it? -- Porter21 (talk) 18:00, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Policies, guidelines and projects Edit

I think with the increased size of the wiki we should think about establishing more policies and guidelines. Currently, basically everybody does things the way he/she thinks works best - which does not result in very consistent results; on the contrary, they're often contradicting. Guidelines would also help making people aware of what to look out for when improving articles or what not to insert (I have no illusions this applies to everyone, but a couple of people would already help).

Let me give some examples:

  1. Videos: There is no rule by which to tell whether a certain video should be kept. Some admins just leave all of them in place, some remove a couple etc.
  2. Bugs: A lot of the FO3 articles are swamped with bugs. Again, there is no guideline on which bugs should be kept and which removed on individual pages, leaving every admin/user to deal with them based on their own opinion. For example, I remove bugs which are not specific to the article subject (general FO3 character bugs on the pages of individual characters for instance) and bugs which aren't really notable (small typos in subtitles) but I'm sure others deal with them differently.
  3. Trivia: A lot of the articles are swamped with supposed references, it's getting a bit ridiculous. Stuff like "the char's surname is Miller and there is a Miller in film/book/game XYZ, making this an OBVIOUS reference" is fairly commonplace. A guideline about notability is needed imo.
  4. Locations: Some sections of locations are merged with the general location article, for other locations each section has own articles. What makes a location qualify for an own article?
  5. Merging in general: what should be merged, what shouldn't?

Now, I don't want to overdo it - this is a gaming wiki after all, not wikipedia. But a more structured approach would help improve the overall quality of our articles in my opinion.

Another point I think we should consider is introducing wiki projects. I think they could help make people contribute in a structured manner and also help tackle tasks which are simply too daunting for one person alone. For instance (mostly talking about FO3 here since it's my main area of expertise), I think we should go over the FO3 char, location and weapon articles and make sure they have proper formatting, a unified structure etc, similar to what I did with the armor pages. A lot of the char and location articles do not even have a general description of the char or location in question. Stuff like that is simply too much for one person alone.

Sorry for the wall of text :) -- Porter21 (talk) 18:19, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Maybe we should make a list of issues to cover first (and/or rough drafts)? It's usually easier to get a discussion going if there's something to start with. -- Porter21 (talk) 22:01, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Also fine with me. One topic for policies, one to gauge interest for projects? If nobody's interested in the latter, no sense in setting it all up (we'd probably need a custom namespace). -- Porter21 (talk) 22:21, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, we'll need to funnel some attention towards the policy topics since most people seem to ignore the "Wiki general discussion" forum. -- Porter21 (talk) 22:43, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
I've started making a draft for the forum topic at User:Porter21/policies. I could probably use some help with the wording etc, so far I've simply been writing down what I had on my mind. -- Porter21 (talk) 08:25, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
I've also made a forum topic for the projects at Forum:Projects. Would be nice if you could comment there :) -- Porter21 (talk) 11:52, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Well, the policy thing is not really finished - I ran out of steam while I was writing the criteria for merging articles at the end. To be honest, I'm not even sure whether this is the right approach in the first place - maybe we should start with general things and then move on to details, not the other way round. -- Porter21 (talk) 20:26, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

How about making a policy forum both for proposals and questions people might have? -- Porter21 (talk) 10:28, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Made the forum. Also did the groundwork for projects, see Forum:Projects and The Vault:Projects. -- Porter21 (talk) 14:04, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

When there are coordinates for a certain location (example: (9.2,7.1)) how do I follow them?

P.S. I agree with Porter's policies. It's hard to read article with all the bugs, trivias, and videos flooding the pages. SuSpence95 (Talk) 00:16, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Character builds Edit

Should probably be moved, yeah. A lot of it is written in first person anyway and having an article on how to build a character would be more useful than a page with 30 random builds. -- Porter21 (talk) 07:33, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

On a somewhat related note, maybe we can finally get rid of Template:FO3 user generated character build then. I never really liked having a clone of the character template for this purpose (no offense to Ash). -- Porter21 (talk) 13:27, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

FO3 item and other templates Edit

Well, I'm already working on it. Just yesterday I merged the ammunition templates and started working on the chem/edible ones. Thing is, I'm growing increasingly less fond of heavily using optional parameters for stuff which really isn't optional in the general sense but only not needed for certain games. Reason for this is that making it entirely optional often leads to crucial info being left out and not noticing it's missing for a long while. For example, I had to go and fix a lot of weapon infoboxes for the FO3 add-on stuff because people copied a melee weapon infobox and pasted it on gun pages, which led to required info for the gun pages missing. I'm currently trying to remedy this by using "type" fields; depending on the setting for the type field the appropriate parameters become required. Check out {{tl|Infobox ammunition}} to see what I mean. -- Porter21 (talk) 06:44, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Maybe, but I'd still rather have the template display something is missing than not. There's always going to be combinations the create article pages won't cover; covering them all is simply not feasible because at some point all the page layouts are going to become a nightmare to maintain. -- Porter21 (talk) 06:50, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
I think there's a misunderstanding - I didn't say I didn't want to merge them :) I just suggested that when merging them, we shouldn't do it by just adding optional parameters but instead employ those type switches.
There aren't that many FO3 templates left anyway; FO3 edible and FO3 item will be gone in a few hours, FO3 achievement will probably only need few modifications, same for FO3 district. For FO3 quests it primarily depends on whether you want to keep the "integrated navbox" for main quests. FO3 armor, FO3 creature stats and FO3 weapon I'd leave seperate, they're simply too different from the equivalent infoboxes for the turn-based games; they probably just need renaming and/or addition of a "games" parameter. And that's it already, I've already merged/generalized all the other FO3 infoboxes we used to have. -- Porter21 (talk) 07:23, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
How about tying it to the game engine instead, i.e. "Weapon gamebryo" etc? After all, it's mostly the engine which determines what values are needed and that way we'll be prepared if Bethesda ever decides to switch engines. -- Porter21 (talk) 07:47, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Since there was no reply, I'm just gonna go with the engine names then. -- Porter21 (talk) 10:49, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
Any idea what the engines for Tactics and FOBOS were called? -- Porter21 (talk) 10:04, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Well, we'd have similar issues with a publisher-based system since Interplay was the publisher for all early Fallout games including Tactics and FOBOS. Nor would a developer-based system be better considering FO3 and FNV will use the same engine but different publishers. I guess it'd be easiest to use an engine-based system by default and simply use the game names for Tactics/FOBOS templates.
On a sidenote, we really need to take a look at {{Infobox location}}. It's reached the point where even I'm starting to have trouble to determine which type of location should have which parameters. I don't want to sound cocky, but if I'm starting to have trouble with it I don't think the template is easy to use. -- Porter21 (talk) 12:17, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

All done. Still think {{Infobox location}} needs a rework though. -- Porter21 (talk) 19:46, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Place categories Edit

I think we should restructure the place categories. Especially talking about Fallout 3 here but I think some points also apply to the other place cats. Currently, everything is dumped into Category:Fallout 3 places. In there you have the marked locations, buildings inside towns, general area articles like East Coast or Capital Wasteland. There is an own category for unmarked places, districts and for shops. The contents of the latter two are also found in the general places category. Some town buildings are inside the unmarked category (where they could arguably fit in). In short, it's a mess.

How about we introduce a structure similar to "characters by type"? I.e. we could have "places by type" and "places by marker" (or something like that), with "buildings", "settlements", "vaults", "underground" as subcats for "by type" and "marked"/"unmarked" as subcats for "by marker". Then we could pull it down to the individual game place categories and categorize each place twice (one type and one marker category). -- Porter21 (talk) 08:47, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Any feedback? -- Porter21 (talk) 10:49, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

It quite honestly was just a joke, and either way, that guy along with others who have complaints about what other people say aren't exactly the nicest people. That guy had a lot of nerve to get in my face like that. please just try to understand, I was just messing around.

Am I lucky?Edit

I seem to have a bug in my game where every costume does the Tesla armor glitch where you have the multiple copies and the unequipped one takes the damage. So far I have tested it with the Tesla Armor, Enclave Officer Uniform and Dirty Chinese Outfit. I'm not going to add this to the articles, although I just wanted to mention it. "In my face" Edit

It was quite a while ago so I vaguely remember it, but What I mean by "In my face" is that he kinda bothered me about my admin request and other stuff on other talk pages for like an hour one night. It wasn't really that big of a deal, I just felt like he had a sort of pompous attitude about it, you could say I misread his tone if you'd like. you're right I shouldn't have done that to his comment, but it was really just my own little joke to myself. I never even thought anyone whould ever even see it. Me and friends do that to each other online all the time, none of us take it seriously, so I didn't think anything of it. sincerely though, I'm really sorry if it offended you or Suspence. BTW just out of curiosity, do you remember reading my admin request a while ago? and also, did you look over my map?

Re: map Edit

Hey, maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but you seem really hostile towards me. I've always been respectful to you, I did what you said even when you confronted me, I apologized to you and Suspence, I've always been very open to change for my map, I change it every time any single person has a complaint, I even asked you to look over it for suggestions, and you've made it very clear that you don't like it. that's fine, but still, I'll change anything you want about it. Obviously it's not perfect. It's just a fan made map, much like this fan made site. and every mistake with it that you named is a quick fix. Just to let you know, I changed the colors of certain texts to white in order to indicate that they represent an entire region rather than just a specific place. It's not like the colors are just random, but if you think it needs to be changed you got it. does that sound ok? can we just stop this conflict already? I've literally offered to do everything that you've asked of me.

FO1/FO2 character project and weekly digestEdit

If you want the affected pages tagged with a projectbox, please let me know. It might help draw attention to the project. In general, I was thinking that maybe we should set up a "weekly digest" of sorts which summarizes the Vault news once a week - we could mention improvements there, forum/policy discussions people should take part in, new projects, projects which are still looking for participants etc - basically all stuff which needs attention but often gets overlooked. What do you think? -- Porter21 (talk) 10:49, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I don't want the tags to be permanent either. Projects should always have a clearly defined goal and should not be perpetual like at some wikis. I guess we could remove the tag for individual articles once they have are completely "done" by the project's standards. -- Porter21 (talk) 11:02, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
Regarding the weekly digest, post it every Sunday evening? We should probably also have a page to collect stuff so nothing is forgotten. -- Porter21 (talk) 11:34, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Re: map Edit

ok, thanks for the honest opinion. I really want to better my map. Would you maybe suggest a different label for the region that the first two games take place in? I'll add the hub, fix junktown or remove it if you think it's a bad choice, I can easily fix the angles, and if you think it's a good idea for all of the text to be black I'm willing to work with that. It's your wikia, you know best. I just want to contribute. My map is your map. If you want I'll even take it down until I make the changes. You might disagree, but most people seem to like my map quite a bit, but I'll be the first to say that it's imperfect.

Projects Edit

Could we step up the discussion on Unified page layout project/character and Policy and guidelines project a bit? Starting on the weekend, I'm going to be away for at least two weeks (this time for real) and I don't want the Fallout 3 NPC overhaul project and the policies project to die away (which will happen if they're left hanging for too long). -- Porter21 (talk) 06:53, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing the havok page I made. Edit

I meant to get down a base page and then do some research on it to fix it up. I then quickly learned I was very off about what I knew and went to change it, but saw you had already cleaned up my mockery of a page... Thanks.--CNavellier 05:30, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

GOG contest Edit

It's great they're supplying these codes :) I guess if we want to have the contest about projects, it'd be best if we make it about the "best rewrite" or something and narrow the scope to the three rewrite projects (FO1/FO2 NPCs, FO3 NPCs, FO3 places) - it'll be hard to come up with criteria for the "best" though. I think doing something like "most edits as part of a project" would produce some undesirable results. Sorry, that's best that comes to my mind at the moment - I'm horribly uncreative when it comes to this kind of things :P -- Porter21 (talk) 08:02, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Sound idea, but we'd have to find a way around people marking their buddies' edits as peer-reviewed although they're not up to scratch. I'd still limit it to the rewrite projects; it's far easier to achieve quantity in the MSG Wikification Drive (while being up to project standards) than in the others. -- Porter21 (talk) 08:11, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
Depends on how long the contest is going to run I guess. I'm going to be away until 7 September starting next week. Another point to consider is how to deal with multiple people having the same number of contributions at the "last" place (say, we'd have 5 people with 10 edits and they'd make up places 14 to 18). Random drawing? If so, how to do the draw (people love getting picky about stuff like that, better to have it set right from the start)? -- Porter21 (talk) 08:43, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
Alright then. I'll help with reviewing as long as I'm still here, of course. -- Porter21 (talk) 10:09, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
It'd be a bit of a shame if we had to exclude the location projects but then I guess it's less hassle. Another issue: How do we handle partial contributions? For example, if for a given article one person did the text rewrite while someone else took the picture etc? Regarding length, I'd say two to three weeks - if it's three, I can help with reviewing in the last one :) -- Porter21 (talk) 09:30, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
Both point system and giving multiple games to the winner/second place are good ideas in my opinion. Regarding the point system, I think doing the text-rewrite/-rearrangement should result in more than 1 point; it's simply a lot more work than taking a screenshot or checking the infobox. -- Porter21 (talk) 09:42, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
Sounds good :) -- Porter21 (talk) 09:54, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
Fine with me. I'm still a bit worried about two things though:
  1. Rewarding points for infobox completion. I guess it's fair enough for the older games, but for FO3 the character infoboxes are to 98% already complete and only require a minor correction here and there. Someone could collect a lot of easy points doing that.
  2. Adding images for the older games. I'm not completely sure on the technical details but aren't a lot of them generic sprites? I.e. could someone gather a lot of points just by linking already existing model images in relevant articles? -- Porter21 (talk) 15:20, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Maybe we should simply save ourselves some hassle and simply limit points to rewriting/rearranging the text (say, 3 points for that) and give a bonus point if the editor in question has also completed all the other tasks. -- Porter21 (talk) 15:36, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Ok with me. I've changed the starting date - I assume you meant it to start today (it said Monday, 28 August)? -- Porter21 (talk) 16:24, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Just a last small thing: I think we should mention only people with accounts are eligble for participating - with IP users there's the problem of reliably determining who did what. -- Porter21 (talk) 16:26, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, missed that. A bit tired today. -- Porter21 (talk) 16:29, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Seeing as most contributions are still unreviewed and the contest ends today, what are we going to do? I think we should cut off new contributions today but give people the opportunity to fix contributions we find lacking. I can't start reviewing them until tomorrow afternoon since I have visitors at my place currently. -- Porter21 (talk) 08:10, September 13, 2009 (UTC)

Could you do Mikael's contributions? I'm nearly done with the other participants (except for Sentinel101's which I'm going to do in a bit). On a sidenote, I think adding inventories yields too many points for the efforts required for FO3 articles (it's basically just copy/pasting from User:Mirar/Chars for most articles). -- Porter21 (talk) 14:38, September 14, 2009 (UTC)
Alright, I've reviewed all remaining entries. Could you double-check Grizzly's (I'm not sure whether the "background" sections should be split into "background" and "occupation and activities" in some articles but I don't know enough about the games to decide that) and Sentinel's (not sure about the points to be awarded there) contribs? I've also updated the contest page and given them until Wednesday morning to resubmit articles which did not pass review, hope that's alright with you. -- Porter21 (talk) 18:26, September 14, 2009 (UTC)
Another point: we only have 8 participants which would leave one download code left over. Should we make 4th place also win 2 games? -- Porter21 (talk) 18:52, September 14, 2009 (UTC)
Time is up, created final ranking. I've told people you'll be handling the distribution of download codes. -- Porter21 (talk) 09:25, September 16, 2009 (UTC)
When are you going to give out the codes? I've had a couple of people ask, would be nice if I could give them a better answer than "I don't know" :) -- Porter21 (talk) 11:05, September 20, 2009 (UTC)

Project checklist Edit

Well, there are two problems with that:

  • The bot doesn't create new pages.
  • There's not really a way to tell the bot to work on the talk pages of a given list of articles.

I already had to ditch the original idea of placing the project banners on talk pages because of that :( -- Porter21 (talk) 10:04, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

However, I think I could modify {{Projectbox}} to serve as a progress box as well. Basically, I could add 10 parameters called "task1", "task2" etc to the general box which could then be renamed to specific tasks for each project. People could then enter their name as the parameter value in each article. In the article itself, this would simply displayed as a number of green checks and red crosses. Sound good? -- Porter21 (talk) 10:24, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
All it'll add is one row of checks/crosses in the projectbox; the other stuff will only be visible when editing the page. -- Porter21 (talk) 10:29, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
I'm starting to think that adding this might well create too much "bureaucratic overhead". After all, people have to add their contributions in the project's progress table as well. -- Porter21 (talk) 14:16, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
Sure. Are you going to use the same tasks for these as the Fallout 3 NPC overhaul project (i.e. rewrite text, check/complete infobox, check/replace image, peer review)? -- Porter21 (talk) 14:31, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

American Soldier / Chinese Soldier Edit War Edit

Hello Ausir,

I wanted to leave you am message about an ongoing Edit War over the pages; American and Chinese Soldier.

A user by the name of MikaelGrizzly created picture at the top of each page showing a soldier on a background of his country’s flag.

I thought the pictures where not very good and didn't fit with the feel of the page and I deleted them, other users have since re-added them, to which I deleted them, again they re-added them...

I think you can see where this is going...

As an Admin I would like to know if you cold step in and make a decision on whether or not these pictures should be kept or not before this edit war gets out of hand and vandalism, flaming, and banished occur.

Thank you for you time and concern,

I'll watch out for that in the future. I apologize if I fubbed up somewhere. Killchain 06:31, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

Fallout Collection Problem Edit

Hey, I don't know if you'll be able to help but i bought the fallout Collection recently but when I play it it says I need the disc. So i put the disc in but it says it's the incorrect disc? What do i do, do i need to download a patch or something? Mr Zurkon 08:26, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

quick question Edit

say i go from character page to character page and just add images of the correct character models, would i get in trouble for that? or is it encouraged? Fall-in:The Post Nuclear Role Playing Guy 06:29, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

GOG? Edit

Sorry about being gone, computer issues and whatnot. Grizzly seems determined to win every last game out from under you, so I really don't stand a chance at winning. Nitty 02:16, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

I have no idea what's going on. Edit

And Porter's on vacaton, so I'll ask you instead. Enclave Hellfire armor's infobox won't display properly, and I'm not sure why. Furthermore, when I copied the infobox that works off of Tesla power armor and tried to simply plug in the Hellfire stats, that one wouldn't display either. Same problem on Winterized medic armor. Help? Nitty 16:04, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Nevermind, all of the armor infoboxes are gone. What's happening?! Nitty 00:44, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

No, only the FO3 ones are gone. I guess we could revert the template for now. Spoon 00:45, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Never mind, I got it all fixed. A vandal hit the gamebryo template page. Nitty 01:22, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Flak Edit

Thanks for letting me know—I think it would be worth putting in a citation of sorts even if you can't go into specifics (NDA?) as I think this could run and run otherwise - people are still going on about Fargoth regardless of how many years have passed since Morrowind's release!--hedleyc 00:41, September 4, 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for putting in the citation; hopefully that'll be the end of that. I must admit that the references were too subtle for me; I had the same idea in one of my mods but I was at least a bit more obvious about it!--hedleyc 01:11, September 4, 2009 (UTC)

Video adding Edit

On The Nuka-Cola Challenge page, someone has added some videos.

I don't know what to do with them. Spoon 18:10, September 4, 2009 (UTC)

I moved them to discussion page. We don't need 3 videos on where to get the quantums at. There is a list on the appropriate page.--Kingclyde 18:16, September 4, 2009 (UTC)

Karma in Infobox Edit

There was a posted forum that was debating whether or not to put the karma in the infoboxes. I personally think it should have been made official a while ago. It is always hard to determine what the consequenses of killing someone is, and it is not usually listed in the article. Also, it just might be useful to know what the game considers the npc, for any of a number of reasons. Here's the forum for convenience: Add Karma to Infobox. Anyway, please come to a decision on this. Could you leave me a message on my talk page? Thanks, ausir! CNavellier 07:22, September 13, 2009 (UTC)

Adding it to the infobox was already agreed upon as part of the The Vault:Fallout 3 NPC overhaul project. -- Porter21 (talk) 08:10, September 13, 2009 (UTC)

Backwater Rifle vs. Lincoln's Repeater Contention with Kingclyde Edit

I'd like to request you mediate an edit dispute between myself and kingclyde over the section of the Backwater Rifle page Backwater Rifle vs. Lincoln's Repeater. I have attempted to discuss the matter in good faith with kingclyde on his talk page but he appears to have taken my dissagreement as a personal insult. I would like to see the comparison section in both the backwater rifle page and the lincon's repeater page expanded to include all the pertenant facts from all the DLC or removed entirely as an incomplete comparison would do more harm than good. Presently the lincoln's repeater page still has information kingclyde saw fit to remove form the backwater rifle page, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Please advise.Tetracycloide 18:40, September 15, 2009 (UTC)

Honestly I think this is getting out of hand. Here is the issue in my eyes. This user wants to include data about the ammo press and alien epoxy in the articles repair. I pointed the user to the discussion and the outcome of the issue that I discussed with porter. I refer the user to read the entry on my discussion page which apparently he refused to read or will not read. Here is the entry:

"I also wouldn't list merchant repair and Alien Epoxy as these apply to all weapons and hence mentioning them is a bit redundant. As for the infobox entry, I'd leave it - article and infobox content are not mutually exclusive, an infobox is basically supposed to be a short "at a glance" summary of the article (in the case of weapons it's also used to present data which is unwieldy when put in the article text but the main purpose reamins). -- Porter21 (talk) 12:04, September 14, 2009 (UTC) "

That means that the alien epoxy does not get listed. Also this user is placing this information in the wrong ToC. If anything it should go under notes. Why would a generic item that applies to all weapons be listed under Backwater vs. Lincoln Repeater and only be listed in one article? Also the ammo press applies to a large amount of weapons. Should it be listed in all of those weapons pages? In my opinion it should not. I'm just trying to keep the Vault clean and format to be followed. I'm sorry if I came off as abrasive but I have my own problems to deal with right now.--Kingclyde 19:17, September 15, 2009 (UTC)

Request withdrawn. I belive we've reached an understanding with kingclyde's recent redress of the situation and resolved a solution that works for both of u: removing the subjective comparison sections altogether. Tetracycloide 20:49, September 15, 2009 (UTC)

Source texts Edit

As you may have noticed, I've set about restructing Category:Source texts. I'd like to rename the category to "Source materials" since stuff like cutscenes and audio holotapes are not really texts - do you have objections? If it's renamed we could also add the concept art to this category.

Another question concerns FO3 source texts primarily: I'm planning to split these into notes (pieces of paper you pick up), holodisks and terminal entries. Notes and holodisks would have own articles for each note/holodisk (unless it makes sense to group them, i.e. parts of a series etc) and terminal entries would be grouped by location (like Citadel terminal entries). Is that ok with you? -- Porter21 (talk) 10:42, September 16, 2009 (UTC)

Mutants and a questionEdit

Im surprised to see that the lieutenant wasn't mentioned in the Quest Page (I added it. I would like to also ask how to take pictures, i have pressed F8 (which was mentioned my MikaelGrizzly) but when i tried to put up the file, it failed and said it was illegal (when i converted it) and when i put it normally it would say it has bad encoding. Frank Horrigan 00:33, September 17, 2009 (UTC)

Does this page require an infobox?, i don't know if i should put it or not, and also its mainly just about a few things so it will need some revisioning, and some categorizing. Frank Horrigan 01:03, September 17, 2009 (UTC)

Policies and guidelines Edit

Please check the policies and guidelines I've written up and see whether anything is unclear, otherwise needs changing or needs to be added. It would be nice to give some feedback on the project talk page even if you have nothing to criticize.

If possible, I'd like to put these into effect by the end of the week. The project has been dragging on for so long with little input that I'm simply tired of it. -- Porter21 (talk) 16:14, September 21, 2009 (UTC)
