[edit] Vault-Tec Power Armor

The image at Vault-TEc power armor is indeed the correct image.3 play-throughs made that quite clear. Also,i play FOBOS as well,so i can help with any problems,if there are any more. The Daddy Banhammer.gif 14:48, September 22, 2009 (UTC)

So what's with the guy posting that "The actual power armor is darker and more simple looking. "? And shouldn't we have a separate page for Vault-Tec Tesla Armor? Ausir(talk) 14:54, September 22, 2009 (UTC)

I start again a party right now and I'm at the end of Chapter 2. I'm trying right now to find a way to make screenshot for Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel and complete pages without images. I repeat all that but in my memory, both those armors are very similar.

Yes, a separate page might be better. For the rest, I will keep you updated =). Itachou 15:01, September 22, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Vault-Tec Tesla Armor

I just acquire the Vault-Tec Tesla Armor and is exactly the image of the Vault-Tec Power Armor but in cyan. I just changed the color of the image. The actually image of Vault-Tec Power Armor is currently distorted and that of the female version of Tesla armor too. I will keep you updated =) Itachou 16:54, September 22, 2009 (UTC)

CNavellier? I think you should have his. He claims on Porter's talk page that he already sent you a mail about it. -- Sentinel 101 18:33, September 22, 2009 (UTC)

He sent me an e-mail asking for recommendations, but hasn't decided yet. Ausir(talk) 20:17, September 22, 2009 (UTC)

I realize I'm probably getting on your nerves (sorry for that), but is it possible to get those games this weekend? I really long to play the Fallout originals and experience myself if they are truly better, but I don't have a lot of time in the week ... . --Sentinel 101 18:16, September 25, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] FOT character project

Hi! I've done some tasks from The Vault:Fallout Tactics characters project before the project start. Such as infoboxes and images on recruits pages. Should I mark them as completed? Veryblackraven 05:15, September 23, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Infobox overhaul (yet again) and Labeled Section Transclusion

Just a little heads-up on what I'm doing. I'm currently overhauling Template:Infobox - the major change (aside from tidying up the CSS) is that I'm trying to streamline the titleheads (i.e. the small line above the name). Currently a lot of them basically look like this: Fallout/Fallout 2 weapon. Now, providing links to the main game pages is pretty redundant (Template:Games already provides that) - linking to the appropriate overview page would be more practical in my opinion.

The problem with that currently is that in order to do that, you either have to have an infobox which is only for a single game (like some of the gamebryo ones currently - FNV might change that as well) or you'd have to let end user enter the titlehead manually everytime the infobox is placed on a page (which is recipe for disaster). As a result, most infoboxes have a "games" parameter and their titlehead display something like what I described at the beginning; which means there's no link to the overview page at all. Infoboxes which summarize a subject across multiple games aggrevate the problem somewhat. In addition, people do not fill out the "games" parameter properly; sometimes they simply put the game name without italics, sometimes with italics but not linked etc. Doesn't look very professional overall.

So much for what I see as the problem; now the solution :) I've written a template which creates links to overview pages dynamically: abblink (another template, abb, holds the abbreviations - similar to gameicon for games). I started working on it before I went on holiday and an early version is already in use by a few infoboxes (for example, Add-on). What it does is taking the abbreviations we also use for Games, a part of a link and a display name and creating a properly italicized link to an overview page. For example, you enter "FO1", "weapons" (part of link to overview page) and "weapon" (display name) and you get Fallout weapon. The improved version I've been working on in the past two days also supports handling multiple games - for example, you enter "FO1", "FO2", "FOT", "weapons" (link) and "weapon" (name) and get Fallout/Fallout 2/Fallout Tactics weapon.

In a second step, I'm going to build it directly into Template:Infobox. So instead of only having "titlehead" for the titlehead content, it's going to have "titlehead", "titleheadlink" and five "game" parameters ("game", "game2" etc) which you can set directly when creating an infobox or simply leave to the user to fill out (mostly the latter will only be the case for the "games" parameters). As a downside, this will require changing most of the infobox templates (not too bad) and a lot of "end-infoboxes" in articles (a lot of work; fortunately I have the bot). I think it's worth it though and will make the infoboxes much more streamlined. Feedback would be appreciated :)

Another minor thing that came to my mind is that we could also use the template to get rid of the "Appearances" field for the character infobox - it could generate the infobox line automatically based on what is entered for the "games" parameters. All that would have to be entered manually would be "Mentions", so we'd have to leave that field.

Sorry for writing half a book :) Also, Uberfuzzy has enabled Labeled Section Transclusion (the extension we were talking about a while back). Which means I can start rebuilding the book pages at some point. -- Porter21 (talk) 15:51, September 23, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Vault-Tec Power Armor (2)

Hello Ausir =). I just acquire the Vault-Tec Power Armor and it's really, really different from the old image. The image we had was indeed the Vault-Tec Tesla Armor but with a false color, which should be the color cyan (which is already far more class.) When one thinks, We were in really mistake ^^.

The Vault-Tec Power Armor is very similar to the T51B but it differs in certain place, it's darker and there are certain shades of blue sometimes. I am looking for a way to make sceenshots, don't worry, I'll post images for the pages of Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, count on me =). Good evening to you my friend ! I'm sure you're really tired of hearing from me about this, but I tried logging in to GOG my password was continually rejected, and I tied it at least 10 times. I am positive it is my password, because it one one I have been using for the past month. I then did the secret question and it said it would e-mail me so I could get in, but it has not, and I ended up trying it several times. It has been about a week now, and I am wondering what I can do... Any suggestions?--That CNavellier Dude 04:24, September 27, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Lucene Search

Hi Ausir,

I have temporarily enabled our new Lucene Search on Fallout. This improved search is something that we plan to roll-out Wikia-wide within the next few weeks. It should hopefully provide significantly better results than the old MediaWiki search. If you have a chance, do a few searches and let me know what you think.

Thanks! --KyleH@Wikia (talk) 20:47, September 30, 2009 (UTC)

It is the same search engine as the one on Central, but it should work on a normal wiki significantly better than it works on Central. Can you try it out here and tell me if you notice any issues with it? (btw, if you can, reply here to make it easier for me to keep track of the conversation.) --KyleH@Wikia (talk) 21:27, September 30, 2009 (UTC)
Haven't noticed any issues with it here yet, but I'll tell you when I notice any. Hopefully the isssue at Central I reported will be fixed too. Ausir(talk) 21:29, September 30, 2009 (UTC)
Yeah ... I actually just talked to my team, and they tell me that it was a one-time issue that Fallout Humor didn't appear--the wiki was actually created while we were doing the reindex. There may be a few other articles like that, but it shouldn't be an ongoing issue. By editing Fallout Humor, it got re-added to the index. --KyleH@Wikia (talk) 21:41, September 30, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] "Sunbeam"?

Hey Ausir. On the FOT weapons template, the Wattz 2000 Laser Rifle and the L30 Gatling Laser are listed under the names "Sunbeam Laser Rifle" and "Sunbeam Gattling [sic] Laser". Are the "Sunbeam" weapons identical to the regular versions? And if so, does the Wattz 1000 Laser Pistol follow the "Sunbeam" trend? Nitty 03:03, October 8, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] FOBOS laser pistols

Hello Ausir =). Not, the picture I posted was correct, is an mistake images for other. The image you put is the "Powerful Ray Pistol", a weapon cut content for Fallout BOS

I take this opportunity to say something =). That, I think for better consistency, the words laser and plasma in Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel was renamed Ray in the name of the weapon. Let me explain why. Even in the artworks, this style of shooting is call Ray and also the FOBOS cut content weapon is called " Powerful Ray Pistol ", hence the basis of my choice. All energy weapons in Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel shoot a blue electric ray that can affect multiple targets (so pierces the first target to reach the other) and cause electrical burns. This is completely different weapons like laser that sends a ball of laser or red laser or plasma type weapons that sends a green ball acid-like. Even the Plasma Rifle in Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel is rather a professional version of Home-Made Laser Rifle seen that the normal version Laser Rifle not exist. For a better consistency in the Fallout universe, I think it's much better like that. Some example names:

- Home-Made Laser Pistol = Home-Made Ray Pistol

- Laser Pistol = Ray Pistol

- Plasma Rifle = Ray Rifle

- Plasma Cannon = Ray Cannon

- Plasma Grenade = Electrical Grenade

I thank you in advance and wish you a good day my friend =). Itachou 14:30, October 11, 2009 (UTC)

Yes I know, I also have the official guide =). But in-game, the Home-Made Laser pistol that uses this skin. Trust me, I will not allow a single mistake on the Fallout Universe =).
For the name, the weapon cut content for Fallout BOS uses this name with " Ray ", which would be strange compared to the other laser or plasma as it also uses this kind of shooting and it's completely different from other game. It's just given the page name, after for the templates etc. ... it will be the in-game name don't worry =). Itachou 14:40, October 11, 2009 (UTC)

I know it sounds strange, but as you know I love Fallout and commit such a mistake would be unforgivable to me. If you do not trust me (which would be strange to you but good), you can ask Werewolfhell who also played the game. Itachou 14:51, October 11, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] FOBOS

Ok, no problem, even if you insist, and that it hurts me but hey, that's your job as Boss.

I'll still bother you a bit, for the name, you can see in this video shoot style used, as I say, an electric blue ray

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5i00mNGK6A&feature=related

Even if the name by using the cut content weapon, namely "Powerful Ray Pistol" I want to use the "Ray" you don't like, you can add to Electric before Laser or Plasma for example although it is less beautiful and less consistent.

See soon, I leave a moment, I pass a bad time right now (not because of you but in my life) and I need to recover a little, sorry. Itachou 15:07, October 11, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] do you know about....

there's a pretty weird glitch I'm getting w/ Broken Steel where the talon combat mercs have white heads and black bodies. do you know about this glitch? any way to stop it from happening by any chance? cuz it drives me crazy, and no one seems to know much about it. --Mwals413 00:57, October 12, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Laser and Plasma name for FOBOS

Hello Ausir =). I have some family problems right now and I'm on edge so it's not grave, you've done your job, no worries on my side. For cons, I expect an answer to the name. if you saw the video,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5i00mNGK6A&feature=related

I think for better consistency, the words laser and plasma in Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel was renamed Ray in the name of the weapon or add " electric " before the name.

Even in the artworks, this style of shooting is call Ray and also the FOBOS cut content weapon is called " Powerful Ray Pistol ", hence the first of my choice. All energy weapons in Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel shoot a electric blue ray that can affect multiple targets (so pierces the first target to reach the other) and cause electrical burns.

I let you choose what you want of course =). I know I still bothering you with this, but the only thing that stops me to continue the weapons list of FOBOS. Thank you in advance and wish you a good day ! Itachou 10:36, October 12, 2009 (UTC)

And the plasma grenade for FOBOS for example, how can I do ? It's just a name to differentiate them from others like Drum-Magazine Combat Shotgun and Pneumatic Power Fist from Fallout 3, which is not called like that in-game. Why would FOBOS different of Fallout 3 for this kind of thing ? Itachou 12:06, October 12, 2009 (UTC)

You mean the Combat Shotgun Fallout 3 will be call Combat Shotgun (Fallout 3) instead of Drum-Magazine Combat Shotgun ? And that same for others because of new guidelines ?

I think it's very damage, I thought this Wiki spoke of the Fallout Universe and not games in particular. The idea of a proper name for each weapon as it does not resemble that of other weapon with the same name was a much better idea. In any case, for now, do not count on me to the Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel weapons list. This choice disappoints me a lot. Itachou 16:57, October 12, 2009 (UTC)

There will be a general article explaining what model lore-wise appears in which games. For people to find and link articles, it's much better to use actual ingame names rather than ones made up by the editors. Plus it makes no sense to cram gameplay information for different games with different engines into one article just because it's the same model lore-wise.
To use your example, the simple fact is that the gun is simply called "Combat Shotgun" in the game. The "Drum-Magazine" prefix is completely made up by editors; it's not used anywhere in the game. -- Porter21 (talk) 09:24, October 13, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Laser Pistol

I think it's working pretty well, although we'll have to find a standard way of dealing with sub-variants. For example, in my opinion the Magneto-Laser Pistol is as much a variant of the Wattz 1000 as the named FO3 versions are variants of the AEP7, yet the Magneto has an own section while the others are only linked.

I'll also have to create the templates for "game-specific article" and "in the games" - I simply added the "raw code" directly to my example because I was to lazy to make the templates at the time :P Maybe we should also modify "in the game" to have 2 columns (one for game and one for variants), it would probably make it a bit more clear. -- Porter21 (talk) 09:31, October 13, 2009 (UTC)

That suits me, if you have a page like to differentiate for everything =). By cons, there is also a Laser Pistol in Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel but unfortunately the picture is the rarest of all, but when I can take screenshot, I will complete all the missing pictures, for weapons, armor, world objects etc... and I will try to put images with a transparent background for those who do not yet =).
Again sorry for taking your head, but as you see, I love the Fallout universe and it's my favorite among the many other (Star Wars, Half-Life, Star Trek etc...) and I really want that everything is well placed everywhere. Count on me for quality work and congratulations to Porter21 for this page, is very well built and pleasant to browse, still good job =). See you soon friends. Itachou 11:06, October 13, 2009 (UTC)
Not a problem :) I understand it's different from what we used to do and that it might take a bit to get used to. But after all, all of us want to make the wiki as accurate and easy to use as possible - and I think it's more intuitive for people who are new to the site to find items at their ingame names than at other ones. You and me both know that the Combat Shotgun in FO3 is a Drum-Magazine one - the average reader likely does not, all (s)he knows is that the item is called Combat Shotgun in the game. We can then still explain what model it is etc in the game-specific articles, and summarize the background story for a model as well as its appearances in a main article like Laser Pistol. This way, we have the best of both worlds and we avoid that articles for models which appear in multiple games become confusing. I guess you've also seen one of the various instances where people simply add "This item does this and that" to multi-game articles and the reader is left wondering which game this applies to. -- Porter21 (talk) 11:29, October 13, 2009 (UTC)

Yes it's true and it is also fairly new compared to other Wiki =) but given the quality, I think this can only work. Itachou (talk) 12:23, October 13, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Laser Pistol shooting style

Good evening Ausir =). Just to tell you, qs you know, laser weapons in Fallout 1, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics does not shot a " laser ray " but a " laser ball ", which is not the same shot by using laser weapons in Fallout 3 and Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. The proof is of course the graphics when fired and when you miss a shot with walls in the area, the ball makes a noise like a bullet. The only weapon shot a laser ray in the old Fallout is the Gatling Laser. Itachou 20:09, October 14, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] VA:CAT

There is a somewhat interesting issue with VA:CAT. At The Vault talk:Fallout Tactics characters project, Veryblackraven rightfully asked whether pages need to be both in "Fallout Tactics recruits" and "Fallout Tactics non-player characters". According to the current version of VA:CAT, they shouldn't; they should only be in "Fallout Tactics recruits". The question is; do we really want that? The same would apply to all companions in all games; since the "companion" cats are sub-cats of the "game NPC" cats, none of them would be in the general NPC category. With the current wording, even being in a location category would already mean that a page would no longer be in the main "game NPC" category. I'm not sure whether we want that, and it's not what I intended by writing that rule. All I wanted is that, for example, a page would not be categorized in "Fallout 2 weapons" and "Weapons" at the same time. Maybe we need to alter the rule? -- Porter21 (talk) 02:18, October 18, 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, that's my gut feeling as well. I've tried altering VA:CAT to this end. -- Porter21 (talk) 09:25, October 18, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] New NPC types?

Thought I'd ask you before I went ahead and made the pages. We have pages for a lot of the new "enemy" type NPCs that are almost identical to the ones in the base game (Enclave Squad Sigma, for example), so shouldn't we also have pages for the non-hostile Test Subjects in the Buttercup Research lab in Zeta and the Project Purity Scientists in Broken Steel? Hello my friends =). Just to tell you that you have still not given your opinion on the question I asked on your talk page in the " Dual weapons FOBOS " section. And another thing too, I do not have much free time for me right now due to many things and I rarely spend here until it returns to normal, so do not worry, I have not abandoned The Vault, as soon as I pass, I will do my best to improve it =). [edit] Background sections in overview articles

As you may have noticed in the Laser Pistol article, I've set up the labeled section transclusion for the gameplay articles. Unfortunately, I think it's too difficult for the average user and I can't make it easier (the section labels cannot be inserted via template etc). I guess we'll have to figure out a different way of doing the background sections in the gameplay articles. Any ideas? Maybe simple is best in this case; "see Laser Pistol#Wattz 1000 Laser Pistol"? -- Porter21 (talk) 00:45, October 19, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Create article pages

I understood your intent, but in my opinion it's basically introducing quite a bit of maintenance overhead for essentially saving one click. -- Porter21 (talk) 12:26, October 19, 2009 (UTC)

Actually, I think we could do a tab-style creation page without using the whole tab view thing. I'm starting to think the latter is more trouble than it's worth, considering the loading times and not being able to directly link to a given tab. -- Porter21 (talk) 12:35, October 19, 2009 (UTC)
Finished with that (pending serverside CSS update). It's a bit like going full circle, but now we have tabs and direct linkability without having to duplicate the stuff in the creation pages. The main template for this is Create article tab; it has the tabs and intro text. The creationboxes themselves are stored in subtemplates (e.g. ). The article creation pages (like The Vault:Create article/Fallout) only call Create article tab with an abbreviation (FO1 in this case); the template does the rest. -- Porter21 (talk) 14:40, October 19, 2009 (UTC)
By the way, we could also have a template loaded above the edit box when using the createboxes, like the "This is a talk page. [...]" one which is shown when editing a talk page. Maybe we could use it to explain the process a bit more by adding stuff like "Please pay attention to the comments (text enclosed in <!-- -->)" or "If you have added text to a certain section, please remember to remove section from that section". -- Porter21 (talk) 15:32, October 19, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] RE: your questions about my recent edits

I don't have a problem with the British spelling in general, but in Fallout everybody wears "armor", not "armour". For the sake of accuracy and consistency, the "armor" spelling should be exclusively used in Fallout-related articles. I'm sorry for inadvertently breaking any images, I was just CTRL-F + CTRL-V, so I didn't notice. I'll be more careful in the future, but I do intend to continue making similar changes Ghost of Starman

Changing talkpages was also a mistake, and I apologize, I just wasn't paying enough attention to what I was doing. Also, I'll admit to being unaware of the Fallout Tactics situation, although I maintain my position on the non-australian fallout games (i.e. the rest of them.)Ghost of Starman 20:18, October 19, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Person

Sure, no problem. -- Porter21 (talk) 00:10, October 20, 2009 (UTC)

I guess some people would also dispute that Herve Caen is a person :) More seriously, I guess we could add "Game company employee" (for both publishers and marketing people) and "artist" (as a more general choice for musicians etc) as type choices. In addition, we could move people who are not strictly developers to categories like "People connected to <game>". -- Porter21 (talk) 00:58, October 20, 2009 (UTC)
Fine with me. I'll make the modifications tomorrow and set the bot on adding the empty infoboxes afterwards. -- Porter21 (talk) 01:27, October 20, 2009 (UTC)
I've added the new types and a new field ("companyrole"). The latter is intended for company employees. Could you check whether anything's still missing before I start the bot run? -- Porter21 (talk) 18:03, October 20, 2009 (UTC)
Well, "companyrole" is an optional field which can be used with any type. I didn't include it in the copy/paste section because there are few developers which have a company role beyond being a dev, and having the field in the "normal" dev infobox will just lead to people filling in "developer" or something similar (which is somewhat redundant) in my opinion. -- Porter21 (talk) 20:36, October 20, 2009 (UTC)
All articles in Category:People connected to Fallout series should have the infobox now (except for a few where it made no sense to have it). -- Porter21 (talk) 23:57, October 20, 2009 (UTC)
Guess we had similar thoughts at the same time :) I was planning to split it similar to character categories, one tree for "by game" and one tree for "by profession". -- Porter21 (talk) 00:03, October 21, 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, makes sense (both suggestions) :) I've already moved the category to Category:People connected to Fallout series. -- Porter21 (talk) 00:16, October 21, 2009 (UTC)
I've shuffled the existing cats around so they fit into the new structure. By the way, should the subcats of Category:People images be renamed to "<subject> images" instead of "<subject> pictures"? They're the only ones I know which use that naming scheme. We'll also have to find a "profession" for Brian Fargo and Herve Caen - the obvious "publisher" seems a bit misleading to me; it could as well refer to companies. As the last point, we could also introduce a third tree to the People cat called "... by employer" or "... by company" and then make categories for Interplay employees, Obsidian employees, Bethesda employees etc. What do you think? -- Porter21 (talk) 00:42, October 21, 2009 (UTC)
Probably I'd simply have lobbed all Black Isle employees into Interplay employees, but a joint cat works, too. As for Herve and Brian, we can probably stick them in the same cat as other non-dev company employees like e.g. Hines. Maybe do something like:
  • People connected to Fallout series by profession
    • Game company employees
      • Developers
        • Producers
        • Programmers
        • Artists and animators
        • Designer and writers
        • Developers (other)
      • Game company employees (other)
-- Porter21 (talk) 02:19, October 21, 2009 (UTC)

(unindent) Still trying to figure out how to do the categorization. I wanted to do something like "Fallout 2 developers/Programmers/Interplay Entertainment and Black Isle employees", i.e. "Game (non)-developer/Profession/Employee of" - the problem is how to name the "non-developer" category so it doesn't overlap with the "Profession" cat. Alternatively I was considering "People connected to Fallout 2/Programmers/Interplay employees" (which would be easier to do for non-devs); the disadvantage would be that we wouldn't have a cat with all devs anymore (instead one with all people involved in the game). Any ideas? -- Porter21 (talk) 14:27, October 21, 2009 (UTC)

Maybe "Non-developers connected to Fallout series" with subcats like "Non-developers connected to Fallout 2" etc? -- Porter21 (talk) 14:33, October 21, 2009 (UTC)
Guess that'll do. -- Porter21 (talk) 17:55, October 21, 2009 (UTC)
The category stuff should be done, although a couple of them are still empty (mostly the profession cats) and still need filling. Regarding employers in the infobox, how about creating a separate "Employment history" section with each row having years on the left and "position<br>company" on the right? -- Porter21 (talk) 20:37, October 21, 2009 (UTC)
Added the employment history thing and had the bot patch up the respective infoboxes. -- Porter21 (talk) 18:35, October 22, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Fallout 2 game messages

[edit] What makes a holodisk a holodisk?

I'd like to hear your thoughts on a couple of things I noticed when working on making a list of all FO3 holodisks. I guess the main question is: "What makes a holodisk a holodisk?" This may sound weird at first, but of course it's not the obvious cases I'm talking about.

I'm not sure how much you are into the technical details of FO3; hence a little explanation. Every note, holodisk and terminal entry has a corresponding "NOTE" object in the game files. Basically it stores the text and/or the location of the audio/video file that should be shown when looking at it. Like all items, a Pip-Boy icon and a world model can be assigned to it. Since all of the aforementioned source text types are NOTE objects, it's not as easy to tell them apart at first glance.

Now, the clear-cut case (one would think) for a holodisk is of course if it has the holodisk world model assigned to it. However, some of the NOTE objects with the holodisk world model are only available as terminal entries in the game - but if you were to spawn them via console, they'd appear as a holodisk. An example are the Citadel terminal entries about Liberty Prime. In normal gameplay, they are terminal entries. If you'd spawn them via console, they'd appear as a holodisk.

Another group of NOTE objects where the line is hazy is those which have no world model but the holodisk icon in the Pip-Boy. A few of these are clear cases (e.g. the Replicated Man holotapes) but a lot aren't - for example, most of the "note to self"-style Pip-Boy entries about passwords have the holodisk icon.

Now, are these two groups - holodisk world model but no holodisk in normal gameplay and no world model but holodisk icon - holodisks? :) -- Porter21 (talk) 15:53, October 22, 2009 (UTC)

Figured I'd also post it in the forum. See Forum:What makes a holodisk a holodisk? -- Porter21 (talk) 18:35, October 22, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Company

Sure, why not. I'll take a look later today. I think it should be called "Template:Game company" though to prevent confusion with pre-war companies. Concerning other needed infoboxes, there are none which immediately come to mind. -- Porter21 (talk) 15:45, October 23, 2009 (UTC)

Well, I can make Template:Publication or something. There won't be much to put into it though, the only data I can think of is "author", "year of publication" and "medium". -- Porter21 (talk) 02:38, October 24, 2009 (UTC)
Done, see Game company and Publication. Feel free to modify as needed. -- Porter21 (talk) 20:05, October 24, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] D20 Gameicon

I can see your point, although the color is different and the FO1 logo is bigger they are somewhat similar. Maybe I can combine the official logo and the D20 logo somehow. I'll take a look later today or tomorrow. -- Porter21 (talk) 15:45, October 23, 2009 (UTC)

I've made one, see on the right. I've also added it to Games. -- Porter21 (talk) 14:03, October 24, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Holodisks

Depends on how you interpret "Notes". All terminal entries, holodisks, notes and other Pip-Boy entries are NOTE objects. In terms of actual ingame items, only some have the "Notes" model (which can be seen e.g. at Flying Bananas Cant Talk). I'm planning to have only these in Category:Fallout 3 notes, i.e. those which are scraps of paper. -- Porter21 (talk) 00:29, October 24, 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, some probably will. On the other hand, not all holodisks show up as notes in the Pip-Boy - quite a few are just regular items (e.g. the Requisition Holos). -- Porter21 (talk) 02:38, October 24, 2009 (UTC)
I'm not fond of double categorization for notes - we had it previously and it simply doesn't work. I've had to fix the categories for nearly every holodisk - some were in notes, some were in items, some were in holodisks, some were in multiple of these. Plus I don't think it's good to have the holodisks in the same category as the scraps of paper, with the latter having no own category. It's a bit like putting drugs and armor in the items category; sure it's convenient to have them all in one place but that doesn't make it a good way of organizing them.
As a compromise, I'd suggest to move the current Category:Fallout 3 notes to "Category:Fallout 3 scraps of paper" (or something) and leave Category:Fallout 3 notes as a purely systematic category with holodisks and scraps of paper as subcats. Fallout 3 notes could then have a combined table of both holodisks and scraps of paper (via labeled section transclusion from the to-be-created "Fallout 3 scraps of paper" and Fallout 3 holodisks pages). That way you can still view both the paper notes and holodisks in one place without having to do double categorization. Sure, not all holodisks result in Pip-Boy notes but I'd rather have that little inaccuracy than double-categorization and/or no separation between paper notes and holodisks category-wise.
On a sidenote, if Category:Fallout 3 notes is supposed to contain all Pip-Boy entries, the naming is inconsistent with Category:Van Buren Pip-Boy entries. -- Porter21 (talk) 20:05, October 24, 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, or that. The world model is simply called "Paper01.nif" in the GECK, so I guess it fits. By the way, since we're on the subject of naming: I've been pondering whether Category:Fallout 3 holodisks should be renamed to "Fallout 3 holotapes". "Holodisk" is more consistent with the classics but "holotape" is the prevalent term in FO3 (although "holodisk" is used as well occasionally). -- Porter21 (talk) 20:30, October 24, 2009 (UTC)
I know what it is for. It's not very apparent from the name though. -- Porter21 (talk) 21:44, October 24, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Category naming

Any ideas for a good name for a category with all technical, out-of-game stuff for a game? Basically I'm looking for a cat in which we could put pages like Gamebryo, Havok Physics, Fallout 3 Vista Help and categories like Category:Fallout 3 bugs, Category:Fallout 3 patches or Category:Fallout 3 console. -- Porter21 (talk) 15:47, October 26, 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I guess simple is best. By the way, what do you think about merging all of the pages in Category:Fallout 3 events into "Vault 101 activites"? They belong to the series of "infamous" Newark67 articles, so I thought it'd be better to ask first ;) -- Porter21 (talk) 18:07, October 26, 2009 (UTC)
Another renaming question: How about moving the "drugs and edibles" categories to "consumables"? It seems a bit more handy. -- Porter21 (talk) 03:48, October 28, 2009 (UTC)
So...? -- Porter21 (talk) 17:25, November 1, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Reptilian deathclaw

Hello Ausir =). The source is the Bestiary Guide of Fallout d20. It is not named like that in it but I did not find a better name. Of course you can change if you don't like =). Itachou [~talk~] 18:43, October 26, 2009 (UTC)

A link on the web? No, because it became something else and that Bethesda is a stickler about Fallout.
Yes of course, it is true that making pages for cut content is not obvious. Finally, even if it is an interpretation, we agree that it does not exactly resemble a classic Deathclaw apart form, while other products, not deathclaw subspecies, was still the same design. It works, I will follow this policy my friend =). Itachou [~talk~] 18:51, October 26, 2009 (UTC)

Just the pictures and where would pass the events, namely Southwest, is it ? It suits me, this save me from post a large keypad text =).

In fact, for the info, they are just different things renamed but they all kept of Fallout. Proof, if you get the various Exodus documents, you will see that it's just changing the names, otherwise everything else is Fallout (as the Highwayman remaned Roadmaster, or Deathclaw you saw renamed Meatclaw) and even some are still here like Power Armor, Leather Armor MKII or Hardened Power Armor.

And like all pictures, for example a guy with a Gauss Rifle or another with a Tesla Armor with the Brotherhood Symbol.

But for the next pages Fallout d20, I put only the picture and the name for the subject, don't worry =). Good evening and soon my potos ! Itachou [~talk~] 19:30, October 26, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Weekly Digest

Well, there's not really much to write about (unless I'm missing something). We had the article creation pages already in the last issue, as well as the MagCloud wikia feature that's listed on VA:WD. There are two new infobox templates (Person was already mentioned in last issue as well) but that's about it as far as I can see. -- Porter21 (talk) 01:11, October 27, 2009 (UTC)

Here we go again. I guess we shouldn't skip it two weeks in a row. Unfortunately, there's not that much stuff I can think of as being news-worthy. I've spent most of my time improving the various item overview pages and switching all the infoboxes to linked headers which, while time-intensive, is probably not all that interesting. There are a couple of new templates but they are mostly very specialized and not something people will frequently run into (transcludesection, overviewpagelist, publication, game company etc). Maybe we could write a little editorial about the top 10 contributors; one or two sentences for each, what he/she does, stuff like that. One of the goals of the digest was to get people more involved; making people feel appreciated probably helps with that. -- Porter21 (talk) 20:35, November 2, 2009 (UTC)
Yup, sounds good. -- Porter21 (talk) 10:56, November 5, 2009 (UTC)
You're welcome, starting with you seemed like the logical choice :) I hope it didn't come out too bad, I'm pretty horrible at writing that kind of stuff. -- Porter21 (talk) 15:54, November 11, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Pagebar

Do you have any objections against shorting the "History and authors" and "Share this article" links in the pagebar to "History" and "Share" respectively? With Wikia adding more and more stuff, we've reached the point where the pagebar has two lines on a 1024*768 resolution (which is rather ugly). -- Porter21 (talk) 03:48, October 28, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Opinions on the Perforator

The Perforator in actuality would be very, inaccurate due to the lack of a stock for stability. If i wanted to be effective, and remain sneaky i would get a silencer, and attach a scope to the Xuanlong Assault Rifle, and by some odd act of fate that we are in the exact same situation, the Chinese Assault Rifle is relatively easy to find, and in actuality easier to repair, and make in comparison to the regular Assault Rifle, even though the Chinese Assault Rifle is stereotypically less accurate, when it is put in semi-automatic -because the AK-47 and Ak-74 are capable of doing so, along with so many automatic, and basic fire ams- it is very accurate, which would be more effective for long range anyways. I've made a first outline. I've found it hard to describe what should go where; maybe you can improve it a bit. -- Porter21 (talk) 20:28, November 2, 2009 (UTC)
I guess we'll need to identify the pages to work on. How about having the bot tag pages with multiple weapon/armor infoboxes? That'll probably not get all of them, but the vast majority. -- Porter21 (talk) 10:28, November 4, 2009 (UTC)
I'll do it today. I've noticed I also need to check for item/weapon infoboxes on one page; quite a couple of weapons were an item in one game and a weapon in another (see e.g. Wrench). -- Porter21 (talk) 10:56, November 5, 2009 (UTC)
I've had the bot tag pages with multiple armor or weapon infoboxes. See The Vault talk:Item page overhaul project#Pages. -- Porter21 (talk) 02:36, November 6, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Design Document Problems

I don't know if you woudl be the one to ask about this but is there a special way of unzipping certain types of files? I've been downloading the Van Buren Design Documents and I can only access the ones that have a Word Document logo next to them. When I look at the others what have a folder style logo via My Documents, they come up as Word Documents but my computer can't look at them. Also when I try to unzip them I get an error saying "Unknown Compression Method" or something like that. Do you know of any way around this?--KnightNapier 23:37, November 2, 2009 (UTC)

You could try downloading WinRAR - it should be able to open them. -- Porter21 (talk) 10:28, November 4, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Creatures

I'm about to create the per-game overview pages for creatures and robots. There's just a slight issue with FO1 and FO2 robots: they don't really have enough robots/computers to justify an own page (4 articles in FO1 cat, 6 in FO2). Should I create the "robots and computers" overview pages for these games regardless (for consistency's sake) or should I group them with the creature overviews? I'm not a huge fan of either solution, so input would be appreciated. -- Porter21 (talk) 10:28, November 4, 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I think that's better than cramming them on pages where they don't really belong. By the way, once these are done we should have all overview pages in place (my goal was to get away from directly linking to categories on the portals and site navigation) except for the per-game SPECIAL pages. I'm putting the SPECIAL stuff in an own section since it's rather extensive. -- Porter21 (talk) 10:56, November 5, 2009 (UTC)
The creature pages are done now. -- Porter21 (talk) 02:36, November 6, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] SPECIAL

I think we should have one SPECIAL article for each game (like Fallout 3 SPECIAL or Van Buren SPECIAL) which explains how the character system works in that game (attributes and their effects) and links to the game-specific pages for perks, skills and traits. For perks we should already have per-game overview pages; for skills and traits they are still missing, especially for the classics. Do you think you could help me a bit with that? I'm not exactly an expert on the SPECIAL implementations in the older games... The goal is that readers can get an easy overview of the character system in each game. -- Porter21 (talk) 10:56, November 5, 2009 (UTC)

I've created Fallout SPECIAL, Fallout 2 SPECIAL and Fallout Tactics SPECIAL based on sections of Fallout, Fallout 2 and whatever info I could scrape together about Tactics on the net. Could you do me a favour and proofread them if you have the time? -- Porter21 (talk) 13:01, November 16, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Cut content and mentioned-only

I think it'd be good if we could properly separate actual game content from mentioned-only and cut content category-wise. To this end, I've created two new branches of Category:Fallout games: Category:Cut content and Category:Mentioned-only content. They are basically supposed to mirror the standard category structure (i.e. you have categories like "Fallout 3 cut items", "Fallout 3 cut characters" etc. I've already set it up for FO3 and started moving applicable pages; I think eventually we should start doing it for all games. Just wanted to let you know and check back whether it's fine with you - is it? There's also one question - should the mentioned-only tree also be divided by games? Currently I've only set it up to be divided by types (Mentioned-only characters, mentioned-only places etc) but I think we might as well go all the way. -- Porter21 (talk) 10:56, November 5, 2009 (UTC)

Not sure whether you missed this one (and the message regarding SPECIAL), but feedback would be appreciated. -- Porter21 (talk) 02:36, November 6, 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I guess it's only logical. Sorting out Category:Mentioned-only characters will probably take a bit, it's grown to a quite impressive size. -- Porter21 (talk) 15:54, November 11, 2009 (UTC)

Well, it's not that I don't know how to get rid of it (the JavaScript required is pretty simple). It's just that if we do that, it effectively disables MyHome for everyone, even those who do want to use it. Maybe we should make a poll or something where people can vote whether they want it or not. -- Porter21 (talk) 19:06, November 5, 2009 (UTC)

Kill it. Bury it. Never speak of it again. Killzig 21:38, November 5, 2009 (UTC)

Seconded. Behead it with a gravedigger's spade and bury the head at a crossroad. Nitty 21:50, November 5, 2009 (UTC)

I don't like it. And don't you remember the reactions in the news post about it? 100% of the posters wanted it gone. Spoon Leave me a freakin' message 23:39, November 5, 2009 (UTC)

Please continue the discussion at Forum:Getting rid of MyHome. Ausir(talk) 23:43, November 5, 2009 (UTC)
I've also removed the "More" link at the bottom of the "Latest activity" widget since that one pointed to MyHome as well. Seemed a bit redundant with MyHome disabled. -- Porter21 (talk) 15:54, November 11, 2009 (UTC)
Do we really need the link to RC? Another one is just 6 lines higher up in the toolbox. -- Porter21 (talk) 13:01, November 16, 2009 (UTC)
I've written a small snippet of JS code which makes the "More" button in the "Latest activity" widget link to RC. I've also made the button appear again and removed the RC link below the article count. -- Porter21 (talk) 01:18, November 26, 2009 (UTC)

Seems like there's a different version of the hack which allows MyHome to remain usable (forum thread at Central). I guess once the remaining small issues have been fixed, we could replace our current JS with the new one. Wikia's going to continually add new features to MyHome (I've seen some translation requests for new MyHome text on Central) so I guess we'd just be losing out in the long run if we disable it completely. -- Porter21 (talk) 13:43, December 7, 2009 (UTC)

The "?redirect=no" is added directly to the URL when you click the link; you can't see it when hovering over the link, for example. No idea why Ciencia al Poder opted to do it that way instead of simply rewriting the URL, but that's how it works. The only link he/she forgot is the one in the user masthead; I left a message on the forum page but there has been no reaction so far. -- Porter21 (talk) 08:28, December 14, 2009 (UTC)
Interesting bug, hadn't noticed that so far (I never use MyHome actually :P). I'm going to try and rewrite the script to fix this issue and the issue with the button in the masthead still redirecting; I guess it's easier/more reliable if the the link itself gets the "?redirect=no" appended properly. JavaScript is not my forte but I'll see what I can do. -- Porter21 (talk) 12:07, December 14, 2009 (UTC)
I've updated MediaWiki:Monaco.js with my new script. It's not as elegant as the old one but both the "middle mouse button click" and masthead tab seem to work fine. Let me know if you run into any issues. -- Porter21 (talk) 16:32, December 14, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Porter Engineering wiki?

Well, I guess for most people the templates at w:c:templates are probably sufficient. I think there are not that many templates which are "unique" to the Vault (a lot of ours are unique in the way they're set up and work but not unique in the function they fulfil), and a couple of ours are a bit more complicated to use and set up than what the normal user needs and can maintain. For example, w:c:templates:Template:Infobox is easier to use than ours, even if it's not quite as "powerful". -- Porter21 (talk) 15:54, November 11, 2009 (UTC)

Wikia Templates also has quite a few game-specific templates (e.g. Template:Infobox quest, Template:Infobox item or Template:Infobox location) which should cover the basics. I can see your point, but it'd essentially double my workload every time our templates are updated, especially if the Fallout-specific stuff should be stripped (which forbids simply copying the changes from our to the "general" template). And I guess you know that our templates are being updated rather frequently.
The whole component issue is what I meant when I said "more complicated to use and set up than necessary". Both our navbox and infobox framework are affected by this. The only reason these templates use components is simply that it was necessary at the time they were created. Wikia was quite a bit behind in terms of updating the MediaWiki software, and the version they (and therefore we) were using did not support optional table rows without using the component construct. Wikia has caught up since then though and the current version does support optional table rows. Both the generalized navbox and infobox templates at Wikia Templates use them, making the whole component workaround largely unneeded for new wikis. I.e. I'd actually recommend new wikis built their templates based on these instead of ours. -- Porter21 (talk) 13:01, November 16, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Lists of inhabitants in cities

Would it be completely unnecessary to make lists of people in the different cities/villages/places? NPCs with name, that is. As of now they're summarized in the article about the place, which looks stupid. Instead, the section in the main article could include the number of named NPCs living there and such, while the list could simply list them up. I'm not sure completely how it should work, but I just think it looks clumsy with the simple list of characters on the article about the settlement. -=KAG=-The VaultNO 20:24, November 16, 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I realize that, but seeing as there are pages like "robots and computers in Fallout" and such, I was thinking it'd be easier for some to navigate if they were organized into a page, and not just a category. I also realize that it might just be extra work and completely unnecessary. If so, I'm sorry for wasting your time. -=KAG=-The VaultNO 21:55, November 16, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Article creation (once again)

I think I've found a better way for handling the pre-defined layouts. Instead of requiring people to go to special pages like The Vault:Create article, a box now automatically appears above the edit window when creating a new article where you can select a layout via links. The advantage is that this will work even when people are creating articles via redlinks etc.

The only downside is that it doesn't work with Special:CreatePage since that page doesn't allow content to be preloaded (or at least I couldn't find out how to do that); but then, neither does the current method. We could replace that page with a page of our own (a small page with a createbox) and get rid completely of all other "Create article" pages (except The Vault:Create article itself, which will only have a createbox).

What do you think? -- Porter21 (talk) 20:05, November 20, 2009 (UTC)

It seems a bit unnecessary to maintain it when people using it end up on the page with the layout box anyway. But if you want to keep it, so be it. We should remove the links to Special:CreatePage in any case (VA:CREATE and the sidebar link to it) and replace them with a simple createbox page; that page is the only way to create new pages without running into the box now. -- Porter21 (talk) 23:19, November 20, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Primary attributes in FOBOS

Does FOBOS actually have primary attributes like Strength etc? The respective articles have FOBOS in their Games template but none of the sources I've found actually say anything about primary stats, just skills. -- Porter21 (talk) 12:49, November 21, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Quest items

I've been wondering whether we still need the "questitem" parameter for Item. It used to serve the purpose of changing the infobox header from "item" to "quest item", but with more detailed headers adding "quest" looks rather awkward (e.g. "Fallout 3 miscellaneous quest item"), so I removed that functionality. The question would be whether to display it elsewhere or completely remove it. I'd lean towards the latter; after all, the "quest" field has basically the same function in more detail. -- Porter21 (talk) 14:30, November 21, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Back to the future

My problem with the Biff/Butch reference is that Biff just doesn't resemble Butch. See pics here, here and here. Also, Biff is dumb to comical extremes: "Make like a tree and get outta here." Butch is just a bully. Deloria is an actual Italian surname. So, the similarity people see is only that the two are 1950s bullies. Consequently, they both resemble other 1950s bullies. Butch actually resembles Marlon Brando from The Wild One or James Dean from Rebel Without A Cause more.--Gothemasticator 08:07, November 23, 2009 (UTC)

I moved them since they respond to their names and they are explitly stated in the game. Yeah, but there is no option for calling Moreau out on this, is there? Not to mention that he's actually several people by 2162, so whether or not can he be called Richard Grey is... debatable. 11px-Naglowaa_se.gif Tagaziel (call!) 15:23, November 24, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Dragon Age: Origins

Hi Ausir, It seems i'm the self-titled primary creater for things on the Dragon Age: Origins. I like the idea you put into your template, however as I see it, not to get nasty is having used ideas from another wiki thrown into ours, then locked (protected), (obviously for a reason however), but then have you walk away while things aren't even half-done.

I know alot of people appreciate the ideas and effort that you put into those templates, however, as our own wiki, we need the ability to be able to tailer them to suit our own style. Obviously, we need more of an ability then just have a single image and block of text for all those templates.

To show you an idea of what I mean; Rogue Class. I've already designed a more advanced version, with Dynamic Navigation, have updated our JS and CSS scripts to allow collapsable information which is implemented in the new design, modified the layout to be more friendly and less gastly. There is a load of new expressions and content to be added still, which i'm still working on as i'm updating the main pages so that it can be used. I'm guessing you know as an Admin of a large wikia that editing a few hundred pages at once isn't fun.

I got to admit, after much of the work i've done, I never had a proper look around the wikia, and came across templates such as yours. At the moment, i've been using a modified layout of the original Infobox for my style, and been wanting to upgrade the Infobox so that I can finish the new design, remove all the existing content with templates, make a new universal Infobox and simply have all other templates branch of that. That way it gives it a clean, userfriendly approach, which isn't complicated for new users or lesser experienced ones. However, obviously there is a reason for me leaving a message, atm I don't have all the time in the world to design everything from the beginning, or I would just copy the source and modify it. But I hardly see the point when it already exists.

My question, can you allow us to modify the source on our wiki, so that we can tailer the template, updrade it to our own style. If not, like said when I have time to rebuild what i've done, I can use the part from the source which I like and remake one.

Let me know what your intentions are. AshleyJames 15:45, November 24, 2009 (UTC)

Well, you can hardly blame Ausir for protecting the templates when it was Snfonseka who did it. -- Porter21 (talk) 16:12, November 24, 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure how it works properly with Wikia, I could tell that he didn't have the administration priviliages on there (well I think). But thought i'd go straight to the person who helped out rather than beat around waiting for a respose. BTW, you're fast with responses too, haha, good team on here or what? AshleyJames 16:21, November 24, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] RE:

Ah good to know, not that I think they are willing to admit it, but I think they Adminstration there is a bit lacky. Not to intentially put anyone down, but things get added, left, added, left, nothing's really updated apart from the common new user who add's stuff as thier playing it for the first time. I can tell you have dedication being here since almost 2004. That's mainly why i'm left doing this myself, seems noone there really has much experience with anything apart from basic text editing (administration wise I mean). I do like one of the Admins there, she's really into the lore and see her active all the time.

Heck they did get things up and running, I admire that. But without anyone there to keep things fresh, new, just copying text from the game and hoping someone makes it look good isn't the best dedication for them atm.

Like said anyway, I didn't intend to get narky or sound rude, I'm a person who prefers to get things done, even though 90% of my time is side-tracked because there's alot to do.

I've already taken it up with Admin there to get somethings removed, updated etc. so hopefully shouldn't be long. I appreciate the quick response and your dedication, good to see somene enjoys what they do.

[edit] Translating

You're obviously the expert at translations. I just have a question: What do you, and what don't you translate? Such as the names of quests, especially those in FO1 and 2. Also, names of the weapons and stuff, what do you and what don't you translate?-=KAG=-The VaultNO 20:41, November 26, 2009 (UTC)

Hm... Well, how do you recommend I translate? I'm really at a loss here, because I don't know what would be fitting to translate and what wouldn't. Also, why is your User talk categorized into Category:Mentioned-only characters? -=KAG=-The VaultNO 20:53, November 26, 2009 (UTC)
The categorization is due to Porter forgetting a : when linking to the category. :P -- Porter21 (talk) 20:58, November 26, 2009 (UTC)
Explains that :P
No, none of the games have been translated yet. I doubt they ever will, too. So I guess this is my sandbox. Just a personal opinion from you, if that's not too much? The quests in FO1 and FO2 don't have fancy names, like those in FO3. Translate or leave as is? -=KAG=-The VaultNO 21:13, November 26, 2009 (UTC)
Ah, that's all I needed, thanks! -=KAG=-The VaultNO 22:52, November 26, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] NPC Overhaul project, npc question.

Ausir,

I noticed that the Chinese Commando also has a section of the Dead chinese commando.

Considering they are two different NPC's isn't it wise to create a NPC page for both the Chinese Commando and the Dead Chinese Commando.

It keeps the overview a little better, and it seems easier to search for it.

Also a link to the other version on each page could be added to quickly get to the other NPC should you accidentally get on the wrong NPC page.

I also asked Porter21 since he's the project leader.

I don't have much of an issue with off-topic blogs, but I do think they shouldn't be used for things which should rather be posted in the forums - both for the sake of actually getting replies and so others with the same question/issue can find the old topic instead of having to post a new one. Can you provide me with a link to the Character and organisation template links please as I can't remember what they are called?--Vault4 15:01, December 11, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Create article: Factions in FO1/FO2

There already were templates for factions in FO1/FO2: Template:Create article/organization/FO1 and Template:Create article/organization/FO2, the boxes were just missing from The Vault:Create article/Fallout and The Vault:Create article/Fallout 2 (they are linked in MediaWiki:Newarticletext though). There's a slight inconsistency with the naming of the CA templates for organizations; the FNV and VB ones are called "faction", all the others are called "organization" (like the cat and infobox template).

Truth be told, I think we should rename "Category:Organizations" (along with its subcats and related templates) to the more generic "Category:Factions". A lot of the "organizations" in there are not really organized, the more generic term would fit better in my opinion. -- Porter21 (talk) 15:06, December 11, 2009 (UTC)

Sure, I'll start shortly. -- Porter21 (talk) 18:02, December 11, 2009 (UTC)
By the way, I think we can delete VA:CAL. It was necessary previously because the layouts couldn't be categorized without having these categories appear in all resulting articles, but ever since I've managed to get around that and put them in Category:Article creation templates, the page is just something which requires constant updating for little gain. -- Porter21 (talk) 19:21, December 11, 2009 (UTC)
All categories and templates have been moved. I've also moved "Category:Pre-war organizations" to "Category:Mentioned-only factions" and added the other mentioned-only factions to that cat. One page I came across doing that is 80s - should that really be here? I thought we only cover Simple and not the setting of JES. -- Porter21 (talk) 12:00, December 12, 2009 (UTC)
I've tried to clarify J.E. Sawyer's Fallout Role-Playing Game accordingly; it wasn't quite clear from the previous version (partially because the relevant bit was in the "Character system" section). -- Porter21 (talk) 13:45, December 12, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] VA: and VAT:

I've asked Wikia to create namespace aliases for "The Vault:" and "The Vault talk:" for convenience. "VA:" is now synonymous for "The Vault:" and "VAT:" for "The Vault talk:". Just thought I'd let you know :) -- Porter21 (talk) 15:06, December 11, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] New Wiki by Vault4

I have just created a new Wiki (Yay!!!). I was wondering if you would help me get it proparly started? If you will, here is the link:[1]--Vault4 22:22, December 11, 2009 (UTC)

How did you get the Did you know onto the main page? Can you give me the FO3 NPC templates please?--Vault4 00:31, December 12, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] AK47

While that is true the page consisted of Fallout 3 references, it is carried by Harkness, appears in FO3, thats why I put that it was a Chinese assault rifle he was talking about. - RASICTalk 18:41, December 13, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] John L. Sullivan

On the Fallout 1 and 2 projects page, Fallout 2 table section, there is a John L. Sullivan and a John Sullivan but these two are actually the same as you are redirected to John L. Sullivan when searching John Sullivan. Should I remove the John Sullivan row?--Vault4 19:17, December 15, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Calico

Is one of the pictures wrong, then? Or the burst shot section? I thought only SMGs and rifles had a burst shot. (excluding the triple shot.) Nitty Tok. 20:00, December 15, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Vault City Inventories

Just to let you know: I have added inventories to all the characters listed in the 'Vault City Characters' page.--Vault4 18:52, December 17, 2009 (UTC)

Could you please check my Edit Count and tell me how far off of 500 edits (only edits that count towards the 500 minimum needed to apply to be an admin.) please?--Vault4 19:48, December 17, 2009 (UTC) P.S. I suggest we install a '3 strikes' rule on here for any user with 100 or less edits. If you agree and install this rule, I feel it should apply to Ip addresses at ALL times. (I will be creating a forum on this topic to see if anyone agrees/disagrees.)

JTLYK (Just To Let You Know): I want a project to be started to put an Inventory box on ALL Fallout games characters that they apply to. Would you and/or Porter21 start this project?--Vault4 20:37, December 18, 2009 (UTC) P.S. I am already doing this for the Fallout 2 NPC category.

--== Fallout Fansites ==

Hey. I know a lot of places that are fan sites and rpgs about Fallout. I own one. I was thinking about making a category or even a small page for people like me to advertise about our sites on your's. Vandy66 16:37, December 23, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] RE: Fallout Tactics character project

Gladly. I just want to know exactly what duties I will have in addition to general oversight of progress. :) Veryblackraven 19:41, December 20, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] World object infobox

Well, everything in FO3 has a base and ref ID. I never created an infobox for world objects because there is very little that it could list; only the base ID basically. Not sure about listing the ref IDs for world objects; unlike the character ones I don't see many applications for them and getting them is a bit of a pain. For characters, you can simply generate a file with all ref IDs by console command where you can then look them up; for world objects, you'd pretty much have to walk up to each of them ingame to get their ref IDs. -- Porter21 (talk) 13:33, December 21, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] FO1/2 item questions

I'd interpret the "cut" category as "can be found in the game files but does not appear in the game". I think the presence in the game files alone is important for some people; in the case of FO3/FNV it certainly would be (some people apparently love playing with cut items). I.e. in your first example, I'd put them in both "cut" categories and clarify in the article text ("XYZ was cut from FO1 and can also be found in the game files of FO2"); in your second example I'd put the item in FO1 items and FO2 cut items.

Regarding the "files" field, not sure. I think modders can easily find out that kind of info themselves; if they can't, they'll likely not make it very far as modders :P I think for FO1/FO2 it'd only be the .frm file names anyway, the .pro file names seem to be zero-padded versions of the proto IDs (which we already have a field for). -- Porter21 (talk) 01:01, December 22, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Fallout Fansites

Many of my friends and I make sites about Fallout. It is sometimes chats about it, and other times it's where you 'RPG' it, like mine. I would like it if you made a page where we could advertise (We'd all have your link on our sites) - Vandy66 16:41, December 23, 2009 (UTC)

hi ausir,do u lik my irradiated outhouse article, thanks for helping:)

[edit] Vandal Smokey

You don't want the vandalism to stay on your page, right? :P Nitty Tok. 13:45, December 24, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] You yanked the tactics template...

...from the Rocket Launcher (Fallout Tactics) page. Are we getting rid of those now? Nitty Tok. 23:19, December 24, 2009 (UTC)

Where does it say to remove the canon warnings? Nitty Tok. 23:23, December 24, 2009 (UTC)

Alright, I can understand that. Nitty Tok. 01:03, December 25, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Since you also run Vault Tec Labs...

Is there a patch to fix armor piercing ammo in Fallout 1? There's only the link for the Fallout 2 patch on the AP ammo page. And frankly, VT Labs wasn't very clear. Nitty Tok. 01:50, December 28, 2009 (UTC)
