Chris Avellone Interview, Part 2

Willooi August 16, 2011
Chris Avellone 2009.jpg

Following on from a previous interview with Chris Avellone, in part 2 we mainly discussed his thoughts on Alpha Protocol's development and critical reception, casting voice actors for written characters, as well as a bit about himself. Here are some Fallout-related excerpts from the interview revealing some interesting behind-the-scenes info, which is available in whole at either Willooi Blog or Gamasutra:

[On how he writes his characters]

There's a little bit of my take on religion with Kaelyn the Dove in Mask of the Betrayer. I don't generally try to write based on my personal views outside of gaming or based on anyone I know, I feel it muddies the point of the character and doesn't help the narrative. Plus, I'd feel weird about incorporating elements of someone I knew into a character, since I feel it ends up being distracting to your evaluation of the character as you’re implementing it and can sometimes feel "off" to someone who encounters the character in game.

There are a few exceptions, and these were all done in the context of questioning their world or questioning game mechanics: One is Kreia in Knights of the Old Republic 2, who captures a lot of the questions about the Force and Star Wars, another is Elijah in FNV DLC1: Dead Money, who is speaking about my frustration with hand-holding in RPGs, but considering both are franchise and/or game mechanic opinions directly related to the universes they are trapped in, I feel they get a pass. Lastly, Ulysses in Fallout New Vegas DLC4 (Lonesome Road) and his intentions there categorize how I feel the Mojave and the West should be dealt with in Fallout.

[On voice actors]

So our audio department at Obsidian (Mikey Dowling, Scott Lawlor, Andrew Dearing, Justin Bell), are aware of the type of games RPGs are, how much dialogue is in them, and how important it is that that dialogue comes across well. We were also fortunate that in Fallout New Vegas, our Bethesda producer Jason Bergman, took the voice acting budget and did something new in (1) contracting Blindlight, (2) spreading out the budget amongst a number of prominent actors (Danny Trejo, Felicia Day, Kris Kristofferson, Wayne Newton) for various roles rather than hooking it on to one central voice actor only.

There is one wrinkle in the process, however, and that's sometimes, once we get an audition that we really like, we will rewrite a character or change their tone because we think it'll compliment the actor better. Ulysses in Fallout New Vegas changed as soon as I heard Roger Cross's voice, and I kept his audition playing in the background while I was writing, and it helped me give direction for the character. In addition, once we got James Urbaniak for the role of Dr. O in the Think Tank in Old World Blues, I rewrote Dr. O from the frenetic, hyperactive newscaster personality I intended and had more fun with doing a scientist-whose-aware-he’s-not-brilliant-or-valued, which I thought might be a nice change from the Venture Brothers, where Rusty Venture’s arrogance tends to blind him to that realization 99.9% of the time.

And we take chances on new talent. Veronica Belmont surprised me in Old World Blues (I don’t think she'd done any voice acting up to that point). I had no idea how she’d be in the studio, but she really delivered her lines well, and we were lucky to have Roger Cross in the studio at the same time so they could do their lines between each other, which works much better (and is rare to be able to pull off). Jace Hall was brought in initially as a skit for the Jace Hall show to be bad and then fired, then we went ahead and recorded him for real, and people seemed to enjoy his character in Old World Blues a lot.

  • Can't wait for Lonesome Road.

  • lonesome RD I believe will be set in Crestline California, because theres on HWY 15 is a sign like that that says High Rd, and its the same direction as well.

  • he has fun job

  • Love the reference to the Venture Brothers. I just realized how OWB is kinda like that show.

  • Oh, and the next Fallout game that takes place in the west needs more Marcus!  :-D

  • The risk with Veronica Belmont was well worth it, especially as she was doing multiple roles!

The Stealth Suit Mk. II with it's voice is a refreshing change from the lonesome nature that most of my games take place in (I rarely travel with any companion other than ED-E.). Just having a voice and knowing that someone has my back is quite refreshing, and she nails a lot of different personality traits that a suit like that would develop perfectly!

    ...

And I just realized I anthropomorphized a suit of armor. Damn she's good.

  • how about [on why the fuck every game or dlc bethesda is involved in gets delayed] i would love to see tht topic

  • NV had more variety with the voice acting unlike FO3

    • Yeah, but I wish the NCR troopers wouldn't repeat, "Patrolling the Mojave desert makes you wish for a nuclear winter." Casual NPC dialogue often reuses lines ad nauseum. However, this was a problem in Fallout 3 as well.

    • I heard some people got attacked last night.

  • The voice acting in New Vegas is awesome. I can't really compare it to fallout 3 since I'm playing with a german version (language change impossible) and there are like 3 different voices for each gender only!!11

    • English version has about 6 voices per gender (a few unique NPCs excluded, I think). FNV definitely has more varied voice acting, though the quality of voices are equally good in F3 & FNV.

    • NV's voice acting was better because the NPCs didn't sound like they were exaggerating everything they say.

    • F3's voice actors didn't sound like they really understood which characters they were voicing.

  • It sounds like uylsess will give us an idea on what ending is considered canon in fallout new vegas and 2. He loses hope with ncr and legion so it has to be independent or house.

    • How can he define a canon ending if his fate is decided BEFORE the second battle for hoover dam? He will define the weapon I'll kill him with.

    • Probably the independent one. I always though it's like the "right way" to finish the game. Crush the factions that try to rule it alone.

    • I'm guessing NCR or one of the better independent ones (i.e. one where the Mojave doesn't descend into chaos). Don't know how Ulysses would define a canon in FNV, though.

    • Well to be fair the 1st anon, he could give a hint that will be thrown in by the devs just for us to know. Not like him straight up telling you that one particular faction is going to take over. I definitely agree it'll either be the NCR or independent Vegas.

    • Independant Vegas would require telling too much about the canon Courier. I think that the canon ending will probably be Mr. House or the NCR. Mr. House would be better for a canon ending, I think, or else the NCR would make things too peaceful for other games depending on the region. An NCR ending could still be good, especially if they stopped expanding for a little while to work on developing the regions that they already have.

Mr. House's space programme sounds more promising than anything the NCR has to offer.

    • While I personally feel Mr. House is the best bet (pun intended) for the Mojave, I also feel the developers leaned towards an independent New Vegas. If you saw all of the endings, you can see that each one had a bittersweet side to it. With N.C.R. it was: [The Mojave Wasteland] had entirely FALLEN under N.C.R.'s banner." Caesar's Legion was clearly miserable for everyone, and Mr. House's was: "...the streets were orderly, efficient, cold." Yes Man's ending seemed to be the only one where every minor faction could win. (Providing you upgraded the securitrons and did all of the optional missions.

    • After beating OWB it seems like independent will be the cannon ending. Given how if you beat it with good karma it mentions the Courier helping the Mojave with the tech. But...

      • Independent spoilers*

It seems like Yes Man has other plans, and will later tell you to 'go fuck yourself.' So maybe NV becomes independent, then gets taken over by Yes Man with him doing whatever. While the Courier helps out the people using Big MT tech.

    • DLC #5 - No Man.

Yes Man's securitrons clash with the Courier's robo-scorpions in an all-faction consuming war.

I would love to see this, even as a non-canon quest chain.

    • That's right. When Yes Man becomes "more assertive" he could easily become an antagonist (or protagonist) for a future game.

    • no ending is canon

  • atleast we have roger cross people...i loved him in 24! and he has the perfect voice for Ulysses as vell

  • i wonder if he will do any work on fallout after this.

  • It's a shame this guy seems so nice and smart. He's really deluding himself to Veronica Belmont's performance. Stop taking chances on female voice actors! Didn't you learn after what happened with Katherine Pawlak!?

    • You're right! We should just have all female characters voiced by a man doing a falsetto!

    • yeah or have alchestbreach do women voices...he is pretty talented at them

    • No female actors? This is the twenty-first century, not the sixteenth.

    • Hold the fuck up - what's wrong with Pawlak's voice work?

    • lol

    • I didn't see a problem with Belmont or Pawlak's performances. They weren't mind blowing, but I've never seen a voice actress's performance that was. And for the eccentric and comedic affect that all of the voices in OWB were trying to put off, I think Veronica Belmont did a very good job.

    • @anon above

Jennifer Hale is a great female voice actress - probably best known as FemShep in Mass Effect, and Naomi Hunter from MGS1 & 4 (although I much preferred her British accent in the original - don't know why it changed to American for MGS4)

  • yah

  • Rene Auberjonois was the best VA in NV

  • Ah, refreshing words of wisdom from the big man himself... Chris Avellone, Lord of the Dance people!

  • Ulysses is an author avatar? I get the feeling we're going to learn a lot more about the lore of Fallout than any of us might've expected.

  • I still want to know who chooses what dubbing companies dub the game. I got some questioning to do.

    • Thats why I like games where you can select the language.. if they care so much for their voice actors they should make sure such an option is available in their game.

    • Well I CAN select the language xD (PC) But it's that some voices are pretty cool, yet others... Sigh I don't even want to mention how much I hate them. Also, I want to know who does the Fallout 3 intro voice in spanish. It's war never changes is the coolest I've heard.

  • Does this mean Avellone doesn't consider any of the endings of New Vegas the correct one?

  • Come on now, Veronica Belmont couldn't have been worse at line reading.

  • You made some good points .I did a little research on the topic and found that most people agree with your blog. Thanks.

  • For its worth, it seems like Bergman helped out with NV's dialogue. Sort of redeeming, right?

  • I have to admit, the Toaster is one of my favorite voices...

    • At times though, the Toaster seemed like he was trying too hard. Then again, everybody in the Sink was rather melodramatic, so oh well.

    • Probably because everyone else in NV read their lines like a Zombie with no "umf" to make you feel like you're in a real conversation. Not saying the voice acting in NV is bad, but some people sounded so bored in that game, or too serious. OWB was a breathe of fresh air because people were finally putting more effort into their characters and persona's... even though it was used to a loony effect but my case stands.

    • Not really. People in New Vegas spoke naturally, not trying to overdo it. Fo3 is a different case.

    • yea, Gustavo for example..

    • Any time I play F:NV with my gf present, she usually rolls her eyes or comments "That voice acting sucks" when the generic people talk.

    • Main character voicing was great with few exceptions that were still above average. But for me NV voicing = Liam O'Brian. He voices the at least 3/4 of the male NPCs. It does not help immersion when in Return to Sender all NCR male characters except Chief Hanlon are voiced by one person. Please give us variation on secondary character voicing...

  • Frankly, I am frightened of Ulysses. More precisely, I am scared that he may turn out to be a disappointing character. Right now, he shows promise as an interesting figure, but to me, what made him interesting was how little I knew about him. I know he is significant, but I am afraid of the answers.

If you don't understand what I mean, I'll use the example of Joshua Graham. When I first heard stories about him, it created this aura of mystery around the man. It gave him menace and intrigue. However, meeting Joshua in Honest Hearts, I realized that the Joshua Graham I had made in my head wasn't the same. He was definitely an interesting badass, but my portrait of Joshua was completely different.

Ulysses will probably be a fantastic character. But I am still wondering how much of my preconceptions will be shattered.

(Oh, and I mean no offense through this post, so don't tear at my throat or anybody else's for that matter.)

    • I understand what you're saying Re: Joshua Graham (and even agree) but I would rather have some kind of answer and be disappointing with it then a continual mystery that makes me thing there's no real story behind it all.

    • I suppose that is true. Resolution is needed. I just pray to whatever deity exists that Ulysses will be given proper respect in terms of dialogue, backstory, and actions taken in Lonesome Road.

    • The end of a story always has the opportunity to massively disappoint and as that is what Ulysses really represents (even though it won't actually end up the end of the story in the game) it's not surprising you feel like that. They have set it up so much there is a lot of pressure to pull off an incredibly interesting character and a great story. Let's hope they succeed!

    • Ulysses always came off as kind of pretentious and anvilicious to me. I'm sure he'll act a catalyst for some interesting debate (and more interesting conclusions), but he's nonetheless a rather archetypal character.

    • You had a voiceclip and a handful of rather generic references to Ulysses and you all think like you know what he's all about. Geez, talk about jumping to conclusions.

    • Well, no one's actually drawn ANY conclusions toward Ulysses' character in this comment, Tagaziel. All anyone's saying about him is that his hooks in the story and the mysteriousness of his character could result in a dissapointing execution; Ulysses might not be as great of a character as we expect him to be. I thought the Joshua Graham comparison was perfect, as the Burned Man was so much more interesting as a character of lore, rather than the bible-quoting "hand of god" character he became. The only person who's made any assumptions as to Ulysses' character in this comment was Tweed, and his description of pretentious and anvilicious is probably drawn from the holotape mentioned, as there is enough information given in his monologue to draw this conclusion. Ulysses' Wiki page gives way more information than anyone here has claimed to.

    • Tagaziel: I am not jumping to conclusions because I don't know what conclusion to jump to. I don't know what to think of Ulysess at this point and I am wondering what he will be like and whether his addition to the story will be welcome. The original post was mixing doubt and anticipation together. Yes, that may smack of impatience but I feel as though it is a legitimate concern.

Captain Tweed: I'm not trying to be a douche here, but what archetype does he fulfill? Frankly, I have no idea what his motivations are. All I know is that he is well-spoken and philosophical .

    • Ever consider that it was intentional, Gibsonites? The legend is almost always more amazing than the man.

    • I was primarily responding to Cpt. Tweed.

    • Tagaziel: Fair enough. Tyrasis: Actually, no. I have trouble accepting that Obsidian sat down and decided "let's make Joshua Graham kind of a dissapointment, that'll show 'em!" It's not out of the question for a storyteller to do something like this with a character, Wizard of Oz comes to mind when I think about it. But if they do so, they tend to make it much more abrupt. Usually, someone described as fearsome or great will turn out to have a disability, or be an old man or something, it's never 'oh, that character was a little less badass than I thought they'd be.'

  • and still no sort of apology for calling us "paranoid" that LR would be delayed.
