Detailed walkthrough

A hero always needs companions

After entering the laboratory in the basement of The Cold Coffin the quest will automatically start. The Black Knight will start speaking to the player and explains the general situation. He will then request the support of the player, which you can accept or decline. If you decline his request you can leave and you will be able to come back at any given time to accept it. After accepting his request an automatical tutorial will start in which the Black Knight will explain to the player, how robots can be programmed and will be unable to leave until at least one robot in the laboratory has been activated by the player.

Conquer the cursed tower

After the tutorial has been finished, the Black Knight asks the player to help him to get into the tower. For this purpose you have 3 options:

  • Craft the 5h-1E-LD on the workbench
  • Lockpick the door to the tower and repair the broken reactor inside
  • Burst open the door to the tower and repair the broken reactor inside

Craft the 5h-1E-LD

After choosing to ask the Black Knight, why he can't come close to the tower and choosing amongst the following options, if there really is no way for him to get there, the Black Knight will give the player a schematic to craft a 5h-1E-LD. All needed parts can be found in The Cold Coffin. To be specific you need to find a fission battery, a conductor, a tin can, 2 forks and a lunchbox. The 1st two can be found directly in the basement, while the player needs to go to the terminal to bring the remaining items in his possession. Forks and tin cans exist both in high quantity in the restaurant of the terminal, while some lunchboxes are located in the souvenir shop. The required workbench to craft the item can be directly found in the laboratory and the actual crafting requires no skill at all. Talk afterwards to the Black Knight and he will automatically make his way to the tower and he will unlock its door himself.

Sneak into the tower

The door to the tower requires a Lockpick-Skill of 50 or higher, while the repairing of the reactor needs a Repair-Skill of at least 30 to be successful. Talk afterwards to the Black Knight and he will automatically make his way to the tower.

Go in with a blast

After choosing to ask the Black Knight, if there is anything unusual in The Cold Coffin he will mention that some of his Protectrons found an inactive bomb in a suitcase in the terminal. He then mentions the possibility to "burst open" the door to the tower with it, which gives the player this option and an optional marker for the suitcase itself. The suitcase is found near the exit to the runway in the terminal and requires a Lockpick-Skill of 25 or higher. After taking the bomb, go to the door to the tower and interact with the door. The options to lockpick or plant the bomb will come into view. Choose to plant the bomb and take some distance to the door. If your Explosives-Skill is below 20, the bomb may explode prematurely and the player will receive damage. Afterwards repair the reactor and talk to the Black Knight like in the above option.

Defend the tower

As soon as the Black Knight is in the tower you can talk to him again. He now plans to open the gates to the cargo hall, but 1st needs to get rid off the Feral ghouls on the runway, so that he sends out his Protectrons to drive them into the main building. The Feral Ghouls will now attack the tower in waves of 1 to 3 per wave. It is your job to defend yourself and the Black Knight from them, while he puts the systems online again. After every wave he will unlock an additional terminal, which you can hack, to activate an automated turret to aid you against the ghouls. There are 5 waves in total.

  • 1st terminal - requires 50 Science (unlocked at the start)
  • 2nd and 3rd terminal - requires 25 Science
  • 4th and 5th terminal - requires 15 Science

Rescue the Princess

After the last attacking ghoul has been killed this phase of the quest will start. The Black Knight will start a conversation with you and tell you to go to the cargo hall with him. In this phase he will act similar to a companion, yet you are unable to interact with him on the same level, since he misses all companion specific options. As soon as you arrive in the cargo hall he will tell you to prepare for a battle, since the signals from the guardians seem strange to him. Until the end of the cargo hall are no enemies at all, but 3 robots (2 Protectrons and 1 Mister Gutsy) can be found and programmed to aid you in the coming battle. As soon as you reach the end of the cargo hall an option will pop up giving you some choices:

  • If you have an Agility of 7 or higher you can disable 1 of the Heartless Knights before the battle starts
  • If you have a Sneak-Skill of 40 or higher you can disable 1 of the Heartless Knights before the battle starts
  • If you have a Small Guns-Skill of 40 or higher you can disable 1 of the Heartless Knights before the battle starts
  • If you have a Luck of 9 or higher you can disable both of the Heartless Knights before the battle starts
  • Start the fight

Both of the Heartless Knights need to be killed in order to advance the quest or even leave the cargo hall, since the exit will be locked after the battle starts.

Happy End

Speak one last time to the Black Knight to finish the quest. He will tell you, that The Princess still needs some time to wake up and rewards your help with the unique combat armor Heartless Steel and some good Karma.

Notes

  • Completing the quest will unlock a scene in the epilogue of Fallout Apprentice, showing that Garen Wayne succeeded in curing The Princess.
  • The quest contains various elements of fairytales.
  • Both the bomb, which can be retrieved from the suitcase and the 5H-1E-LD aren't real items and won't be listed in the inventory
  • This quest is the only way to get into the cargo hall and so the only way to get the unique .32 pistol Evil Empress.
  • The quest won't fail no matter what, since the Garen Wayne can't be killed and won't turn hostile towards the player.
    • He will be knocked unconscious if he receives a certain amount of damage.
      • Personal comment: You puny players shall not ruin the Happy End no matter how evil you are. Bwahahaha! Except for the case, that you just stop midway or ignore the quest...but then you don't get my awesome unique stuff! Bwahahaha!
