As I mentioned in my previous blog post, I didn't get Power Armor Training until almost the end of my pre-DLC Fallout 3 playthrough. At that point, I had been using a combination of Ranger battle armor and Ledoux's hockey mask for AP, Luck and DR with no stat penalties and only a moderate amount of weight.

Now, I should mention again that I did play and love Fallout 1 & 2 a long time ago, and I remembered that power armor in those two games (see Power armor (Fallout)) did not come with stat penalties. In addition, the Strength bonus it gave almost canceled out its weight in Fallout 1 (probably a net gain when subtracting the weight of whatever armor you were previously wearing) and far exceeded it in Fallout 2.

In Fallout 3, by contrast, most power armor (see Power armor (Fallout 3)) has an Agility penalty of 1-2 points. Coming from an armor loadout that has high AP bonuses, this immediately strikes me as a deal-breaker. And while it still provides Strength bonuses of 1-2 points, this at best offsets only enough of the weight to make it a wash with Ranger battle armor. On top of all that, the armor+helmet gives a combined DR of only 48, while my previous armor combo gives 43 DR!

In the end, I'm failing to see why power armor is worth using in Fallout 3 even if I wasn't a VATS whore (other than because it looks way cooler than wearing a retarded hockey mask of course!).
