Fallout movie treatment revealed
No, the news is not about any upcoming movie. It's about a Fallout movie that was being planned by Interplay just after the release of the original Fallout. In 1998, Interplay formed a division called Interplay Films, which was to develop some of the company’s video game titles into movies. A Fallout movie script was to be written by Brent V. Friedman. Several studios were interested in the concept, but before a deal could be consummated, Interplay Films was disbanded around 2000 and the movie was canceled.
A full movie script was never written, but writer Brent Friedman managed to find an early 15-page film treatment containing a full summary of the story on an old floppy, and was kind enough to send it to me. You can read the whole thing in this wiki article or download the PDF here. Here's a short excerpt:
The treatment was written in early 1998, before the release of Fallout 2. The released version is the second revision. A third version, with some additions and refinements also existed, but is yet to be found. This isn't the definitive version (most of the character names are placeholders, for example) but it's still a decent overview of the story macro.
“ It was surprisingly fun to read it after all these years (it was written around 1998 when Fallout 2 was released). There are some things I would definitely change (obviously, there are many outdated references, etc.) but there are also scenes and aspects of this story which I still love.” |
The movie was not a faithful adaptation of the game's plot, and was never intended to be one, although the main story was loosely based on that of the original game. Some of the elements of the Fallout universe that many players can't imagine a Fallout title without, like ghouls, Brotherhood of Steel, deathclaws or power armor, were not included, although it's understandable given that e.g. the BoS is not as essential to the plot of the original game as to the later ones. The only characters from the original game, aside from the Vault Dweller himself (although here we have a party three vault dwellers - aside from the main Hero, there's the Female Officer, Techy and Scholar), are the Overseer, the Master and Dekker - the movie was to focus on Vault 13, the search for the water chip and the super mutant threat, and most other parts of the game did not make the cut. New characters and threads include Max (based on Mad Max), the hero's Intended and his relationship with his father (which may sound familiar to fans of Fallout 3).
As for the rest of the story, see for yourself and tell us what you think!
Would you like a Fallout movie to be made?

Ok, one, The Book of Eli may be post-apocalyptic, but it isn't FALLOUT. IMHO, if there is a movie made, it would be a better plot to do it with Fallout 3 and have it go through the game to the end of the add-on.
-
Um... No? <.<
-
I'm going to write a Fallout book, just for the fun of it. Then, I'm going to post the first paragraph here. Probably. A fallout movie set in New Reno, New Vegas, and various vaults would be good. Even a plotline ready: A man, expelled from the mysterious vault 123, searches for a purpose among the wastes.
-
There are only 122 Vaults.
-
Actually, there already is a Fallout movie. It's called The Book of Eli. :-)
-
Hope they do a fallout movie, i would go see it even if it was the worst movie in the history of movies.
-
If they do make a Fallout movie it needs to be far enough away from the Fallout cannon so the Plots don't contridict.
-
I think they should make a movie based on Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas. More people played these two games and it would be cool to see a post-apocaliptic Washington D.C. or Las Vegas in a movie style.
-
bethesda should make a movie after all they have the rights... those who voted that they shouldnt make a movie screw you, just cause you cant play the game dumb faggots
-
Awesome! Too bad it's canceled. The plot agrees with my theory of how the great war was started.
-
I know what this movie needs. Its steven seagal, he represents the perk "Bloody Mess" What do you think?
-
fail
-
Why fail? it would be a good choice, as long as he looses weight, in the post apocaliptic world of fallout the hero cannot be SO FAT.
-
It would be great if they made a Fallout movie .. As long as it isn't this one. It's pretty crappy and especially the ending is bad and cliché.
-
It would be great if there was one but the people who have no idea what the game series is. Would be kind of frusturating...
-
...but the people who have no idea what the game series is... what?
-
I would love for them to make this movie but hollywood would just disappoint many people if they did so I don't know if this would be good or not. But I want it to happen. Just stick to each gam like Fallout One or 2 or 3 or whatever
-
I want somethings from this wikia. I want to be able to download fallout ringtones and screensavers. Come on, give us something extra. Fallout is the greatest game series ever, we need something more.
-
What kind of ringtones do you want or something like that?
-
the ringtones that I have in mind are things like pieces of the speaches of president Eden and of Mr House and of course the famous one of the overseer of vault 13 "you are a hero but you have to leave" AWESOME! Also the tune of "the misterious stranger" and the "level up melody". Fragments of the songs of the fallout saga would be very cool. Fragments of the lines of the companions and also of liberty prime, also fragments of goul speaches. And of course the sound of bottlecaps, the main theme of fallout 3 of course, perhas some sounds of the aliens on mothership zeta. Something like that "the wanderer that is alone." Thank you for taking interest in my request, no one else did.
-
Mysterious stranger song as a ringtone... WANT
-
That sounds like a great idea, although this wikia is far better than the oblivowiki and the un-official elder scrolls pages. this is the best game wikia i have seen so far.
-
Chase.Christopher.Coleman you are absolutelly right. This is one of the best wikias in the web if not the best. But I suggest the ringtones and screensvers in order to make everyone in the web KNOW that this is the best wikia ever hands down, no argument. I think it is a good cause. Question is how do we add a downloads section. I already obtained the ringtone of the misterious stranger and some others, I want to cooperate with the wikia giving the comunity things to download, but I dont know how to do it. Oh, and I still dont have a screensaver of fallout; that will take some time.
-
I replyed to Chase.Christopher.Coleman but I forgot to sign in. Well the question is how do I share with the comunity the ringtones that I obtained for free on the web? We have to make a download section. HELP PLEASE!!!
-
No wonder it had about 8.8 million all in the same time once ;)
Yeah, Ausir and this wiki kicks ass. And serious ass.
-
The Vault will always hold a special place in my heart but Final Fantasy wiki is almost if not as good. The Walkthroughs are so funny and informitive
-
Personally, I would like to see a movie in both the original fallout settings and Washington D.C. Due to their awesome storylines and well New Vegas...... ehhh.... good game, okay story
-
F3 didn't have *that* good a story. And the other games have too many aspects left to player discretion. Personally, I would like to see a new story if they decide to make a movie.
-
Are you kidding me? fallout 3's story was epic. Liam Neeson as your dad who then runs away to save lives. I dont wanna say much more to spoil it for other people but it was a good story. It was emotional for me. i was crying when that big thing happens at project purity halfway through the game. It was sad.
-
I was crying at how stupid my dad was. *SPOILERS*
"What? So now you that you're being asked you don't want to turn the purifier on? C'mon, I'm a power-armored badass backed up by a genetically engineered Super Mutant with a laser gatling gun! I can just kill the Enclave afterwards! What the hell, Dad! Don't flood the chamber with radiation! How the hell is anyone supposed to get clean water now? THE SWITCH IS NOW BEHIND A BARRIER OF RADIATION YOU MORON!!!" Oh yeah, and later on the aforementioned super mutant who is IMMUNE TO RADIATION decides that I should go in to activate it for the greater good. Yeah, lot of good i'll be once i'm dead on the ground, huh Fawkes?
Liam Neeson's voice acting was rubbish, and didn't add anything to the game. Bethesda would have been better off paying for a decent voice cast instead of dull celebrities.
Running off to give a bunch of ungrateful pricks another reason to kill each other while leaving his son and everyone in the Vault to die wasn't really that heroic. For a doctor, dad was a real idiot.
-
Aslong as its based off of the original Fallout's setting then yes.
-
I'd rather see a new setting. The originals would probably just be ruined if they were converted into a film.
-
The movie should start from the begining, fallout 1. It should have Ron Pearlman as the narrator and please for god's sake, keep Michael Bay away from this movie.
-
hahaha
-
For the Vault's sake, let's hope YOU are kept away from this movie.
-
I dont know, an action movie would be interesting. I wouldnt want a fallout story where its just story and no action. I see how you'd rather not let him direct it as he may not be true to the series but after al, he has done good jobs with films before that people thought he wouldnt be good with, transformers anyone?
-
Hey YakovFrolov. Why are you so agresive against me? What have I dont to you?
-
I'd like it to be set around New Vegas, because if it's like Fallout 3 it just seems like it'd be a little sappy
-
Exactly why they should make one on Fallout 3. You would get female veiwers for the romance and good values and male viewers because of the action! You have to throught these into concideration and look at it from all points of view.
-
Umm... Fallout isn't about romance.
-
Good Values? So blowing up a city, murdering innocents and chasing after children with a gatling gun is your idea of having good morals? Fallout isn't about values, it's about war. What romance? You got one girl who basically told you to go f*** yourself for doing the only morally correct thing and one line at the end of a DLC. Plus, that's not even taking into account the fact that the LW could be female. Fallout is designed to appeal to a certain fanbase, but not the one you have described. Plus, your stereotype of men and women is very sexist. Being a certain gender doesn't define your interests.
-
@Anon numero tres It's called artistic liberties to be able do all the good value, romance stuff.
-
Fallout isn't about romance... Oh gawd, you've broken my heart, baby! Go on, play Fallout 2. You can get married there (and then feel utterly sorry about it).
@Last anon
Don't tell me Fallout 3 is so about morality.
-
@The Wanderer - It can also be called, "dumbing it down for lack of imagination". There are loads of films that do all that romancy, moral stuff. Very few do it right. You can tack on some heroic sacrifice and a possible romantic interest but in the end, that doesn't make a film or a game good. Fallout is more violence, dark humor and the futility of good actions in an unforgiving world. The ending for the first game did that right, and it turned out to be awesome. Fallout 3 tried, but in the end it didn't work so well.
@Yakov - Don't really get what you were trying to say at the end there, no offense. Yeah, I have played Fallout 2 but none of the Fallout games have had the kind of "kill the bad guys, save the girl" kind of romance." More get married while having a shotgun pointed at you and then 1) watch as your wife gets shot to death. 2) Sell her 3) Jump in front of Frank Horrigan's plasma bolts at the end of the game to save your wife before being melted into a bloody pile of goo; *then* watch as your wife gets shot to death. Not really romantic. Unless you are a complete and utter badass of course, who managed to keep her alive through all that. Then you get to sail off into the sunset on an oil tanker as the Enclave base explodes. Actually, come to think of it, that is pretty romantic. The cool kind. I'll have to start up F2 again. ;)
I think that I'd rather have a new story if it came to a film anyways. There are too many alternate paths in the games for a film to work.
-
Well if that doesn't work... they can try Fallout porn.
-
Would you seriously wanna watch porn with Ghouls and/or Super Mutants in it? Hell, look who I'm asking. You're probably a /b/tard who'd fap to a dude with his dick in a dog.
-
/b/tard FTL... What things considered wrong by the most extreme of freaks will /b/tards do...?
-
What does /b/tard mean, anyway?
-
/b/tar....hmmm is that the stuff that grows under my nuts?
-
My guess is it's someone who post stuff at 4chan. Wouldn't call him a /b/tard though, it's offensive.
-
Try Deviantart. Loads of ghoul porn there. Uhh... don't ask me how I know that.
-
/b/tard generally refers to anyone on 4chan. Also, given the a "rule" /b/ uses (Rule 34: "If it exists, there is porn of it" (And in all the time I've been on the internet, I've yet to see it disproven (but so much proof, dear God))). There will be fallout related pornography, unfortunately.
-
A /b/tard is someone who basically lives of 4chan and if there's any meme on it, they spam it. Including Rule 34 which is stupid. Rule 34 is basically, if it's there, there's a porn version of it, just like what this anon said.
-
wow none of u people have been to 4chan? faill
-
Once, but I was disgusted by all the naked men on it.
-
What's 4chan, anyway?
-
go there and find out there. it'll be fun. probably not for you though
-
An imageboard full of pedophiles and disturbing men. People post photos on it.
-
They must have the timeline of Fallout New Vegas because the story is great, and they must have parts of flashbacks in Fallout 2, and other stories of the past Fallout.
-
There are two many aspects of the story left to player discretion in New Vegas for that to work. For the main story alone you would be alienating 3/4 of the fan base.
-
In my personell opinion, they should make one BEFORE the Great War. See what it was like, you know. We dont know much about it. End at the Great War, hell, end at the opening of the vaults. Just dont leave us on a cliffhanger.
-
sawyer said that he would like to make a fallout: resource wars. I would love to see a fallout where you'll have to make your way to a vault before hell breaks loose, and several years after the vault opens so you can see the aftermath.
-
And then die of extreme level of radiation...
-
I like the idea but honestly I like finding out about the old world by finding ruins and old recordings. A game set at that time would take away all of the mystery of it but it would still be awsome so hell why not
-
@Yakov I think we would really get some use of the radiation suits, I found them almost useless in fallout 3/new vegas. How do you think the dwellers of vault 8 survived when the vault opened 10 years later? I doubt they deployed the geck 4-5 meters from the vault door. My guess is they used vault-issued radiation suits.
-
Radiation suits don't help. Not in real life 50's, not in Fallout. I still find it hard to believe that there is only about 4-5 rad/sec in bomb craters in New Vegas. Like, I mean, seriously? Radiation doesn't clear even after a thousand years, and here is just 2 centuries. C'mon ;)
-
Yeah I was a bit disappoint when I first saw the clear skies of F:NV. I prefer hazy, irradiated places like Searchlight. Still, the vault 8 dwellers must have had a way to fend off the rads while deploying the geck.
-
They probably let some people absorb all the radiation and then deploy the GECK ;)
-
maybe with 69 votes, what?
-
See, movies based on video games (as well as the other way around) tend to be.... not so good. See The Super Mario Bros. Movie (the live action one), and James Cameron's Avatar: The Videogame. Oh the horror....
-
a movie would never work. there are too many fallout games, too many outside information out, too many developers who would raise hell if something they wanted in it wasnt mentioned. the best thing that could happen to the fallout series besides more games would have to be a tv series. therefore, there could be many different stories going on instead of having one super long movie that doesnt even cover half of what has happened in the fallout universe
-
Novel. No TV.
-
Both
-
Yeah, I guess ;)
-
You made some excellent points there which has made me reconsider my decision.
-
a movie is more better even if it would be long. this is my idea of it: imagine inception, watchmen, and sucker punch in a post apoc setting. that would kick ass
-
You could say Jericho on tv but no..jericho failed.
-
I say make something about New Reno. The mafia wars. Prostitutes. Drugs. The hot shit ;)
-
C'mon Sucker Punch, really. Fallout is about action but its got to have a plot. (or at least a good one.) A movie about Fallout 1-3 would be cool but not Fallout; New Vegas. Ha, what about a movie based on Fallout Tactics.
-
That would be great because Tactics is full of action and amazing combat.
-
Only Fallout 3 or Tactics would really work. The others leave to much up to the player.
-
Nah, Fallout 3 is an attempt to get lots of cash, not to make Fallout. Bethesda doesn't even know how to make Fallout, anyway.
-
I was saying that they are the only ones that could work because they are the only ones with storylines which are linear enough to adapt for a movie. I agree that Tactics would be better though. I'd love to see something like the end movie for an hour and a half, that would be awesome. ;)
-
I think it should be based off its own story and should be unique. and god damn like 3 or 4 years to make the movie. it has to be a GOOD GOOD movie.
-
im interested in getting fallout 1 and 2 and I want to know how fun is the combat system is?
-
The combat system is turn-based and fun. Although the AI can seem as very simple, they actually use tactics in their approach (if you play on Rough combat difficulty). The deaths are quite gory and unique for most kinds of weapons, and there are quite a few ways to die even from the same weapon ;)
Since it's not real-time, the AI is much more clever than RT. Very fun, that's what I say ;)
-
It's incredibly hard too, it's fun when you're kicking ass with Bloody Mess trait which wasn't very helpful aside from blowing up limbs but when you started fighting Super Mutants, it's not fun.
-
Depends on what level and, especially, what weapon you're using (I went in there with an Assault Rifle and got my ass kicked, despite a decent SG skill).
-
The combat in the originals were horrible as was the interface but then again nobody plays them to kick ass and take names. People play them cause the story is incredible and there classics also I agree about the deaths a minigun will make you feel like a god as you tear people limb from limb
-
The combat were alright, but when it said I had a 40% chance of hitting, it felt more like 5% chance of hitting. It got a little tedious in the beginning when my small guns lvl weren't that good.
-
If you aren't having fun killing the Super Mutants, then you aren't playing it right. ;)
-
The interface wasn't horrible. It's far more worse in 3/New Vegas, because you have to click a hell load of times to get somewhere, instead of the originals which had everything planned out in the SPECIAL screen. Additionally, the Pip-Boy screen was too small to fit a lot of things as well, so you had to scroll like goddamn.
-
F1's interface was easy to use and Yakov, it's easy to use on Xbox/PS3.
-
I've been playing on PC. Original Fallout layout was much, much more easier to handle and would of been better even on Xbox or PS, and I'm sure that the originals could easily be ported to the consoles (since there aren't too many controls and everything's turn-based).
-
I think Tactics had the best interface out of all the Fallout games. I remember doing a hell of a lot of scrolling in the barter screen with 1/2. Two columns made such a difference and yet it was so simple. Everyone didn't walk in zig-zags as well. ;)
-
Uhh, I want lie: I played Fallout 1 & 2 so long that all the combat seems to easy for me. I'm telling this not because I want to show some toughness or something. I simply learned how to create and develop a kick-ass character.
-
It's pretty easy to define a kick-ass character: kind, charismatic and agile small gunner (especially for Fallout 2, with the Gauss Rifle). But that's what I found the best. ;)
-
thanks guys i got it GOG and its great!
-
F1/F2 would be easy to port but you're going to have to change the movement thing from F1/F2. There's too many hexes on the screen at once.
-
Too many hexes? ;)
-
According to the manual thing, the hexes are those little things that your character moves too. That you press on. Those little red shapes.
-
Yeah, I know what hexes are, I don't understand why there would be too many of them.
-
Well if they were ported to console I mean. It'd be annoying constantly moving the analog stick or whatever to get to the right one.
-
Why? I think it'd be suited just fine. I've seen a turn-based game on a PSP, and picking the right position for your guy to move on took a few seconds, no more.
-
But if they used the hex thing then it'd be annoying.
-
I think he's talking about how everyone in Fallout 1/2 walked in zig-zags all the time. It kinda removed the atmosphere of some moments when it happened. Like Frankie and his squad of death-troopers murdering a family with gatling guns and then marching off in zig-zag formation. Although making your character spin on the spot with the hexes was quite funny. ;)
-
That wasted alot of AP too when you're trying to run away. I know.
-
I think squares would have been a better idea, but I guess it's a trademark of Fallout's turn-based combat ;)
-
Tactics had hexes though and it was pretty easy to navigate. They looked like squares but if you rotate your character with the keyboard you can see the several directions.
-
If one could take the dizzyingly stark despair from The Road, patch it together with a little action from Book of Eli, sprinkle on the measured lore from Mad Max and toss in a heaping helping of Vault conspiracies and terrifying CGI monsters and armor and you'd have - well - like, the best movie EVER.
-
no, its a recycled peace of garbage that has been the spot light for so many poor movies over the last few decades: You get introduced to a boy who yearns for adventure, Boy teams up with rag tag band, they Meet adventure, Some die and they make a new friend, friend is an expert at survival, they make a new enemy, they fight new enemy and get their asses handed to them, the meet enemy again and win (Under dog caricature) the boy who would be hero falls in love and they live happily ever after.
Here's a list of movies (some fairly recent) that follow this boring and predictable plot layout: Tron: legacy, The eagle, The Last legion, Any king Aurthur movie, The losers, Death Race, That last fast and furious movie, etc. The list just goes on and on, the fact of the matter is that creativity is a dying concept, If I were to completely recast the show "Scrubs" and place its setting in a space age world with aliens, but I keep the same writers and have them do the same already made episodes people will explode with praise a how this is so new and original when in fact it is just the same load of crap fed to you on a slightly shiner plate. This Movie is no different.
-
This plot layout doesn't spread for every recent movie. It can be a girl, man or woman instead of just a boy, as an example. I say make something full of action and drama and thrilling moments and you've got yourself Fallout. Oh, and, add some humour.
