Due to time Commitments, I'll be posting the offical Rankings along with George's feedback now. My Feedback is done, but is at home (whereas I am not) and Jspoel was sadly too busy to be able to critique (but did contribute to the rankings).

This Weeks' Challenge

Challenge 4 - 15 Years of Fallout Special

To Celebrate 15 years of Fallout, you've been commissioned* to pitch to Bethesda** a DLC concept to celebrate the Fallout series history.

Before we begin, I want to stress that you are not to design the whole DLC… That challenge would be a bit tricky for this stage in the challenge. This is to simply to pitch the broad concept, most of the details will be worked out by others in the team once a pitch is accepted.

The requirements are that the DLC must be for the most recent Fallout game (so Fallout New Vegas), and must feature a location from a previous canon Fallout game. You may have an easier time if you select Fallout 1 or 2 as the timeline and detail provided in these games will give you more to work from, however you may select Fallout 3, F:BOS or Tactics if you choose.
*No, not really
**Nope, sadly not

Your entry should be in two parts.

1: Tell us the location you've selected, and tell us why we should want to revisit it. You should give us a broad idea of the main quest that has brought us back to this location. You may find this easier if you write this as a memo format, or if you were giving us a speech.
2: Tell us how the location has changed since our last visit. You'll probably find this easier if you do this in wiki format.

  • Designing a whole DLC is too big a task for this stage in the game, you are not required to do this. The task is more about the location, and the changes since we last saw it. A timeline that makes sense is critical.
  • This has a lot of similarity to the "Design a town" challenge - you should make sure you hit the same points as that challenged needed (government, trade opportunities, etc). If you see this as "renovating" an existing town, and then telling us why you picked that one, you'll be most of the way there.
  • You should in broad strokes tell us about the quest that has brought us to this location, but do not give us fine detail. Give us a broad overview, but don't break the quest down point by point. 1-2 paragraphs in the pitch document is fine
  • Same goes for any side quests you choose to mention. You're not expected to list any of the side quests that would appear in a game, but if you have an NPC that is involved in a quest that you help thinks flesh out your town, feel free to give a paragraph or so on the quest.
  • Basically, in this challenge, remember that in the "roleplay" of the challenge you are just one person (albiet the creative head) in the team. You have a team thats going to do the fine detail if your pitch is selected.

Judges Comments

DragonBorn96: very creative set-up; a DLC with a mystery at the center is classic Fallout. This feels like a nice, open framework that you could pour lots of stories, characters, and action into.

Old World Relics: Good set-up, the notion that the courier is an unknowing terrorist is intriguing. I wish there were more details however around the theme he puts forth early on.

Crimson Frankie: Returning to Modoc is a great idea that is exquisitely described. Nice work! For me, the Q&A format means that you've thought through many different angles.

Dead Gunner: I love the agitated-mutant angle, and the Scar character sounds very cool. This has some classic Fallout angles including multiple outcomes, although it feels perhaps a little too narrow in scope to be DLC.

Agent C

DragonBorn96: Good Choice in choosing Adytum/Boneyard as this is a location that the games have teased us with big changes. Political intrigue, a plauge, and gang warfare, the Boneyard DLC seems to have it all. You've also detailed how the location has changed int the meantime Very impressed this week.

Old World Relics: A third visit to a little town called Shady… Love the choice of name, very thematic. A sprawling new city is a location rare in Fallout games, and this could be a great way of establishing a "hope" image for the future of humanity… Until you break everything with the bomb! Your entry however seemed a little short and left me wanting more, I don't really get a sense of how the town has changed… or if it has at all.

Crimson Frankie:Interesting way to write the proposal… but hey why not have a little fun with it?

Modoc is probably for me the second least likely place I would have set a DLC … Strangely on my first play through I didn't find it! That said, the unexpected choice gives a lot of opportunity to surprise, and surprise you do.

You've created for me a classic struggle that belongs in the fallout series with Metzger's lot looking for pastures new, and picking on the weak citizens of Modoc. You've offered a wide variety of locations in the town itself, and the remains of the national park. The name is also very thematic and well received.

Again, very impressive.

Dead Gunner: Another unexpected location in Mariposa. Given that players have destroyed it twice I think its not a particularly good choice…

The link story into the main game I don't think worked for me… The courier tracks a signal to Mariposa, but ignores a lot of towns on the way, and you mention the mutants want to cleanse the Mojave, some distance away… I think you would have done better to have had a story linked in with a location such as Jacobstown, where a rerise of a master in Mariposa would probably have been something that would concern Marcus greatly, and help give depth to an area I thought was underserved

You seem to have gone with a vanilla dungeon for this, I think more detail again would have been welcome on this.

However, I do like that you've got a possible "evil" ending open. I thought this was very true to the intention of Fallout 1.

I don't want to get you down, your entries are improving, there's just still some gaps in them I think need to be filled.

The Ranking

First off, some sad news. The real world has unfortunately got in the way of Yes Man's ability to play the game, so sadly he has had to withdraw this week.

But we're not leaving it there. This week is a double elimination (including Yes Man's withdrawal), and YOU will help us fire one of the apprentices. Of the four remaining, only the one that the judges rank highest will avoid the vote.

Our winner for the Week is Crimson Frankie, who after a couple of close seconds has won his first challenge for the series. Unfortunately there are no more Immunities left in the game, but he escapes the vote this week.

  1. Crimson Frankie
  2. DragonBorn96
  3. Dead Gunner
  4. Old World Relics

Of our remaining three contestants, someone has to be fired. I leave this in your hands. The poll closes, and the winner announced at 0001UTC on 30 September.

Vote to fire one of our contestants this week

The poll was created at 14:07 on September 24, 2012, and so far 98 people voted.

Home Viewer Challenge

This weeks Home Viewer Winner is Topple101 who has crawled back from defeat a victory for his "Orange Coloured Sky" perk, he'll progress to the Home Viewer Final. We'll be featuring more home viewers in the "Boardroom" post next weekend. Here's a reminder of the challenge:

For the home viewer contest You are to pitch us a "feature" for Fallout 4. It may be a game mechanic (like VATS), a Perk, a location or faction, or anything else you can think of. You should keep the feature independent of the overall location that Fallout 4 will be in, as that's not been announced (so factions and locations should be kept general).

You should not pitch us the whole game. Just one small thing that makes Fallout 4 different to the other titles.

Link your subbmission in the comment section of this (or any other Fallout Apprentice blog). Each week we'll highlight up to 3 entries, and let you pick the entry of the week. All entries of the week will go into a final vote at the end of the series... So get writing!

(Players in the main game may participate in the home viewer contest as well - and don't worry, I'm planning a prize for at least the winner in that too!).

Just some advice on this: This is in two parts, you have to tell us about your feature, but you also have to tell us how it makes the game different from those before it. Here's some practical examples for the suggestions given above:

  • Perks: Perks typically support a certain style of Gameplay, or enable/improve certain other things like items or other featuyres. Make sure you you're telling me what the problem is you're trying to solve - what gameplay style are you trying to support - is it a new one or has it been neglected, how does it "Solve the problem"?
  • Mechanics: This is a tricky one to give advice on, but again, tell me the problem you're trying to solve. Aimed Shots and VATS allow easier sniper play. The Perk system opens up new abilities outside of the skill system, etc.
  • Location/Faction:Easier to give advice on. Simply come up with something different to whats in the game.

NB - You must post your proposal as a blog, and link to it in the comments. If you just describe the idea in the comments, it will not be considered.

Please also include the following code at the top of your blog page:
{{directionbox |text =This page is a part of the [[User:Agent_c/FalloutApprenticeRedirectPage|Fallout: The Apprentice contest]]. It should not be confused with in game content |image =50 Vault-Tec C.E.O..png }}

That's all for this week - join us 30 September to see who be eliminated this week and for your first look at round 5 - our Semi Finak. Why not tell us in the comments who you think will be this year's Apprentice?
