I'm Trent. I'm a guard for the Water Merchants. Our caravan was attacked... by a monster! So huge, so fast. It ate Joe, and took rifle shots and didn't flinch! So huge!

Trent Barrister is a Water Merchants guard found in a random encounter in Fallout northwest of the Hub.

Background[]

A denizen of the Hub, Trent took up contract work with the Water Merchants as a caravan guard due to a lack of opportunities in the city itself. He doesn't have much in the way of engineering or scientific skills,[1][2] but he's a decent shooter. With the excellent pay and low risk it seemed like the perfect job.[3] Especially since the Merchants pay handsomely for protection due to ever-increasing water prices they impose.[4] Unfortunately for Trent, he had the misfortune of running into a pack of Hub deathclaws with his caravan. The caraveneers first smelled them, but it was too late to flee, as they immediately pounced on the group.[5] The guards fought back initially, but the deathclaws just shrugged off rifle shots and kept killing and devouring the guards and merchants. Trent's friend Joe reportedly went down the gullet in just three bites.[6]

Trent and the others fled into the desert, once he realized that the deathclaw didn't even register the three .44 rounds he put in them.[7] The encounter left him severely traumatized, trying to return to the Hub,[8] but suffering from dehydration, hunger, and sleep deprivation.[9]

Random encounter character

Other interactions[]

  • Trent can only be encountered once northwest of the Hub, in the "Death" area. He'll be panicked at first, providing limited information about the deathclaw (if the player character is aware of the deathclaw, but hasn't killed it yet) or the missing caravans (if the quest is active).[10]
  • Trent can be calmed down by using a water flask or either type of iguana-on-a-stick on him. This runs the risk of crashing the game, but will make him a little more verbose.
  • With -21 or less Reputation, the Vault Dweller can threaten Trent into handing over his goods. They will be rewarded with a knife, Desert Eagle, and 20 shots of .44 Magnum FMJ & JHP rounds.
  • Once encountered, Trent disappears from the game. If the game rolls for an encounter with him again, a single molerat is spawned instead.

Appearances[]

Trent Barrister appears only in Fallout.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Trent is somewhat strange in implementation. He wears leather armor, despite his sprites appearing to have a jacket, and upon inspection he's called a peasant.
  • When talking to Trent, he claims that a deathclaw "at Joe in three gulps!" This is an obvious typo of the word "ate."
