This Machine is a unique weapon in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[]

A gas-operated, semi-automatic, clip-fed rifle chambered for .308 rounds. In terms of operation, it is a relic of 20th century engineering, utilizing an "en bloc" clip system that allows ammunition to be inserted from above, clip included, into the fixed internal magazine. When all eight rounds are expended, the clip is ejected with a very distinct metallic "ping." Despite the archaic loading method, the combination of powerful rounds and semi-automatic fire makes it a viable choice for a post-nuclear combatant.[1]

Characteristics[]

Expanded

Compared to the standard battle rifle, This Machine does higher damage per shot, has a faster rate of fire and so a higher damage-per-second (DPS) value, does higher critical hit damage, has a lower AP cost, has slightly lower spread, has significantly higher durability, has the same weight, and has a higher caps value.

Durability[]

This Machine can fire a total of about 2,995 standard rounds, the equivalent of 375 reloads, from full condition before breaking.

Notes[]

Behind the scenes[]

  • Although based on the M1 Garand,[Non-game 1] This Machine is not an exact reproduction.[Non-game 2] This Machine has the exact same weight as the official weight in pounds of the M1 Garand, loads through the top of the weapon with the exact same en bloc 8-round clip, and makes the exact same distinctive "ping" when it automatically ejects the clip after firing the last round. It also has about the same cyclic rate of fire as the M1 Garand, 40-50 rounds per minute.
    • Though the rifle's real life inspiration was commonly chambered in .30-06, some M1 Garands did see conversion to .308 for Navy use due to limited availability of the M14 rifle (also chambered in .308) in the 1950s.
  • The weapon is a reference to Woody Guthrie's guitar, which had a sticker stating "This Machine Kills Fascists" emblazoned on it. In Fallout: New Vegas, This Machine has the statement "Well This Machine Kills Commies" carved into its side, seemingly phrased as a direct reply.
  • In the game's files, as well as the G.E.C.K, This Machine is referred to as "WeapNVBattleRifleUnique." The base variant did not appear until Gun Runners' Arsenal, albeit exclusively available from merchants.
