The Slog is a location and potential settlement in the Commonwealth in Fallout 4. The Slog is based at an old public swimming pool that acts as a sanctuary for ghouls.

Background

Following the exile of all ghouls by order of Mayor McDonough, one former resident, Wiseman, instead of heading to Goodneighbor with the majority of the ghoul populace, decided to found a settlement that would act as a safe haven for persecuted ghouls. Founding the community in an abandoned public swimming pool, Wiseman and a group of former Diamond City ghouls began to produce tarberries by utilizing the swimming pool for farming. As word spread about the settlement, various pre-war ghouls began taking up residence within the establishment, including famous inventor Arlen Glass.

As the community grew, the settlement was still without a name. When a trader decided to take refuge there following a long journey, they described the trip as a "slog", but still thought the entire trek was worth the effort. Upon the eventual departure of the trader, Wiseman decided to name his small residency "The Slog", a metaphor to describe how living at the settlement would always be a challenge, but the endeavor would be worth it in the end.

The Slog eventually became one of the sole producers of tarberries in the Commonwealth. Due to the good reputation this garnered, Wiseman decided that maybe his community could become more than just a refuge for outcast ghouls. He believed it could become an example of how cooperation and an interest towards a common goal can achieve great things, and help ameliorate the misconceptions about and alienation of ghouls around the Commonwealth.

Layout

The concrete building consists of a main room with two entrances, as well as two parallel shower rooms containing several beds and chairs on either side of the entrance. The ghoul inhabitants grow tarberries in the swimming pool outside, along with a cornfield nearby where the workers produce their own food. A children's playground is located beyond a fence near the settlement.

Notes

  • The Slog is the only location in Fallout 4 where tarberries are being cultivated.
  • Even though The Slog is a ghoul-only settlement, Wiseman will sometimes assign the Ghoul Problem quest.
  • Despite being a fairly small and shallow body of water, the swimming pool where the tarberries are being cultivated can support water purifiers up to industrial scale.
  • Arlen Glass offers a miscellaneous quest to retrieve some toy parts from the Wilson Atomatoys factory in exchange for caps, the amount of which can be increased by passing up to three charisma checks.
    • If the Sole Survivor has already cleared the factory before meeting Arlen, a dialogue option will appear allowing the Sole Survivor to tell him where to find the toy parts he wants. Arlen will reward 150 caps as payment for the tip and decides to go to the factory himself, denying the player the miscellaneous quest.
  • He can also be given Marlene's holotape, a pre-War recording of his daughter and his wife who both died when the bombs hit more than two centuries ago. It can be found in his terminal, which in turn is located in the locked-down office on the uppermost level of the Wilson Atomatoys Corporate HQ. Returning the holotape to Glass will be rewarded with more caps and the Buttercup toy, a unique Giddyup Buttercup toy horse.
    • If the Sole Survivor has already cleared the factory and listened to Marlene's holotape (this could also possibly require certain terminal entries read at the factory) before meeting Arlen, when he first introduces himself a dialogue option appears that allows the Sole Survivor to recognize him. There is then a yellow dialogue challenge on the response "Daughter?" when he asks how the Sole Survivor knows of him. He will then relate his sad tale of neglecting his daughter and how he should have been a better father. He can then be given her holotape resulting in the previously mentioned rewards.
  • Arlen Glass is not counted in the settlement's population count.
  • Not technically a 'bug' per se, the beds are NPC owned and not even using setownership allows you to do more than hard-select them (pressing and holding E on keyboard or A on xbox/X on playstation) and simply moving your character. The way to get rid of them involves placing a section of floor down, moving the bed on top of the floor section, and then deleting the floor section, which zaps the bed along with it. A waste of wood, to be sure, but this method allows you to replace the beds with more manageable ones of your choosing.
  • Upon discovery, several (if not all) of the settlers may already be dead. If this occurs and their bodies are present on the ground, opening the console and clicking them for their ID and typing "resurrect" will restore them to functionality. If the bodies are missing body parts, resurrecting them via console will cause their mesh to bug. To fix this, open the console and click on the person and type "recycleactor" followed by "disable" and "enable" (otherwise they will recycle with no equipped items or items in their inventory). Quests may then be accepted from Wiseman and Arlen Glass. However, because the settlers were killed, resurrecting them will not restore their settler count for the settlement, in which case it is best to disable or kill them once all accepted quests are completed and turned in. Dierdre will remain a broken trader regardless of whether she is found alive or dead and then resurrected.
  • Because the Saugus Ironworks factory is very close to this settlement, fast traveling here can sometimes cause the Forged to start attacking your settlers and vice versa. If you place turrets on an elevated platform on the south end of town, they can also open fire on the Forged bandits who wander too close to your town.
    • If a fight is triggered between the settlers and the Forged in Saugus Ironworks, Gunners in Hub City Auto Wreckers may also pick the fight if either settlers or Forged get too close, specially from the elevated bridge, where lies a Gunner commander and some other low-level Gunners. This could result in a large scale, and very hard to control, battle between the three parties.
  • During settlement attacks, enemies forces may attempt to reach the Slog by passing through Saugus Ironworks, resulting in a fight between them and the Forged.
  • The bridge immediately southwest of the Slog is a random encounter location; random encounter characters may spawn on the bridge and may be drawn into combat with either the Slog inhabitants or the nearby Forged at Saugus Ironworks.
  • Dierdre tends to bug as a vendor after the first time you trade with her (even without being killed and resurrected). She will show no caps, and no inventory, and the player will also show no inventory to trade. She tends to get blown up and killed while the player is gone.
  • On rare occasions random enemies, including Assaultrons or Deathclaws, may be standing next to you at the fast travel point when you fast travel to this location.
  • There will most likely be an alpha deathclaw across the river lying down.

Appearances

The Slog only appears in Fallout 4.
