one word... EPIC!!!! Lancer AR 23:51, October 23, 2010 (UTC)

Melee weapon?[]

So the article says the lance uses a "short wave radiation to attack the closest target". What exactly does that mean? That line makes it sound like a ranged weapon.--109.110.26.67 08:21, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

From the attack animation, sound effects and the name of the weapon i figured it's some kind of welding machine.84.58.199.11 15:30, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

It's a type of tool: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_lance No fancy scify stuff here, just plain old conventional plasma--Bloody Llama 22:43, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

I removed the word "closest" from the quoted phrase. --Kris User Hola 04:35, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Good weapon[]

I had just purchased two of these, and used one to repair the other, and also had just spoken to the Elder for I Could Make You Care. Upon exiting the bunker, we were set upon by four BoS soldiers, two wielding Gatling lasers. I accidentally did a VATS round with a combat knife so after the round ended I switched to the lance, drank some soda, took some stimpaks and then exited the pip-boy and proceeded to slaughter 'em all, with help from Veronica (until she passed out) and ED-E. --Kris User Hola 04:35, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

How does it work?[]

Does the thermic lance do damage over time like a ripper or chainsaw or does it actually do a hit? Krono 'Zulamee 23:39, October 28, 2010 (UTC)

From my (very short) experience I'm pretty sure it's DoT like Ripper or Chainsaw. --Jonathan Strange 23:44, October 28, 2010 (UTC)

Fire weapon?[]

Does a thermic lance count as a fire weapon for the Pyromaniac perk? 194.199.143.57 12:59, October 29, 2010 (UTC) Moonheart

No. I just updated the Pyromaniac page with New Vegas specific information. You can check there what weapons are affected. --Jonathan Strange 13:38, October 29, 2010 (UTC)

Can someone clarify this![]

Where has the info come from that it uses "short wave radiation" since the animation shows sparks and humming and the head of it looks like a welding tool i figure its a plasma torch or a electric welder of some kind.

Critical Hits[]

The weapon can critical hit, or at least the game displays the critical hit message when using the weapon in VATS occasionally. Mictlantecuhtli 14:42, November 10, 2010 (UTC)

Versus Legendary Deathclaw[]

In theory the Thermic Lance can kill the Legendary Deathclaw in under three seconds (using nothing but automatic attacks), but I loaned out my copy of the game to a family member when I got sidetracked by Fable II and III, before I could test it in-game. With both melee speed perks (Slayer and Melee Hacker), the weapon should attack 6 times in three seconds. The total bonus damage attainable versus deathclaws is 50% (Purifier), 5% (Bloody Mess), 3% (Lord Death), 10% (Abominable), 20% (Heavy Handed) and 25% (Psycho or Slasher) for a total bonus of 113% (unless there is some type of cap). 100 + 113% = 213 (DT: 35 - 15 (Piercing Strike) = 20). So 193 x 5 = 965 damage in 2.5 seconds. Mictlantecuhtli 01:51, December 22, 2010 (UTC)

Super Slam! & Unstoppable Force not working[]

I've been looking forward to buying this toy since the start of the game. But "hahaha, I'm going to screw you over!" said the universe. The weapon doesn't use either of Super Slam! or Unstoppable Force perks. They're either bugged or the info on the page is incorrect. I'm not at level 24 yet, to confirm whether it uses the Slayer perk. Even if it does though, it's not going to be enough to counterbalance the two (wasted) perks. Sticking with Oh, Baby! till the end of the game - a lot more fun and actually damage as well. --The Kiw 16:18, December 27, 2010 (UTC)

It doesn't work for automatic weapons it isn't a bug its preventing the game from being 3000% broken with that combo. with so many attacks per second you'd have everything in a constant stunlock until death. it may as well be 1 hit kill if that were the case

Much more common after last patch?[]

It seems now, after the last patch, that about 50% of the legionary assassin teams have one member with a thermic lance, usually in middling condition. The legionary assassin teams also appear to arrive more frequently, so it has become relatively easy to get a usable thermic lance much earlier and much more cheaply than before. Has anyone else noticed this? Wunengzi 11:40, July 12, 2011 (UTC)

I don't have the new patch but it's probably part of the mentioned rebalancing to account for the new levels added by DLCs. It's a REALLY vicious weapon so it makes sense that making enemies tougher would potentially include giving more of them this weapon. --Kris User Hola 11:58, July 12, 2011 (UTC)

"Scrap Heap" is changed?[]

For me it works like half damage for half AP... 80.72.182.180 15:23, October 19, 2011 (UTC)

Scrap Heap does 50% damage at the cost of 45 AP. Base AP is now 65. I would like to change this, but it seems this page is locked??--The Gunny 02:31, October 31, 2011 (UTC)

X-COM: Terror From the Deep reference?[]

Just noticed this shares a common name with a weapon from X-COM: TFTD. Like its possible TFTD counterpart, it bypasses the armor of tougher enemies, allowing it to kill heavily armored foes in fewer hits than a firearm. 142.68.141.252 19:49, August 30, 2012 (UTC)

Improvising by using a welder as a weapon is a commonly used concept in many movies/games/books/etc. Referencing its use to one source is rather silly. ForGaroux Some Assembly Required! 20:08, August 30, 2012 (UTC)

Claim to be most damaging melee and unarmed weapon[]

"With a high critical chance setup and all 3 critical damage boosting perks, the thermic lance is the most damaging melee (and more damaging than any unarmed) weapon in the game."

Lol wut. It's single attack damage isn't the highest, it's dps isn't even close to the highest, so what the heck is this saying? 207.161.212.113 14:27, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
