Karma Edit

Will RL-3 leave if you get good/evil karma?

Reportedly, not. However, RL-3 is a waste of money, IMO. Compared to someone like Paladin Cross, he is useless in battle. He can carry more stuff, but I ended up just leaving him at home. One time I told him to wait and forgot about him and could not remember where I left him.

Maybe. but you can't get Cross unless you have good karma, and not till later in the game.
It just depends on your play style. If you want the AI to do all the work for you, get the strongest companions.

Meanwhile, P.Cross would not join me because I was still linked to RL-3. (This is using Xbox, BTW.)

Later, the program told me he had gone to Canterbury Commons, but when I got around to going there, he was not around. The next time I went to the Citadel, P.Cross joined me, so I evidently lost RL-3. (Good riddance.) 14:23, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

I dont know anything about wiki-editing [just click "Edit"], but right now i have star paladin cross, rl-3, and dogmeat in my party. I assume this is a glitch. I got rl-3 first, then dogmeat, and had good karma the first time i met cross and she joined me.

I fired RL-3, but when I went to Canterbury Commons he was there, but his name was just Mister Gutsy and all he would say was "Another glorious day in this man's army!" .

The Mister Gutsy is a friendly leveled robot that spawns sometimes in Canturbury Commons, for me it started as a protectron, went off to fight baddies, traded RL3 for Jericho and I came back later and there was a sentry bot, no sign of RL3 though

EDIT: Found RL3 just then, hovered into Canterbury Commons while I was waiting for a trader

I fired him, and when I went back to Canterbury Commons there was a Mr Gutsy on the main street, and RL-3 was out the front where the traders stop.

Could we get someone with a PC version to volunteer to put up RL-3's stats like we have for Fawkes and Star Paladin Cross? I'd do it myself but I'm on PS3. 10:38, 14 December 2008 (UTC) Grav --DarkJeff 11:54, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Name/Easter Egg Edit

It is likely that Sergeant RL-3's name is a play on R.L. Ermey, best known as Drill Sergeant Hartman from Full Metal Jacket. The leetspeak 3 would make the E, and R.L. Ermey spells his name in the same way as RL-3's name is written. Given that unlike many Mr. Gutsies this one has a numerical name, I think it's fairly clear they were being clever about it.

I'd add this myself but I don't want to register. If someone agrees with my assessment, though, it's worth a line. 12:30, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Plasma wash? Edit

Anyone else have the problem getting wash damage and friendly fire from RL-3s attacks? Often he'll come up behind me and commence firing, grazing my character. Tends to do a fair amount of limb damage.

Have you tried changing his combat style? I tend to let him lead the attack, (he usually runs in there anyway), and I flank the enemy, depending on the enemy. I need to keep an eye on his health, so if he is up against yao guai or deathclaws, I will go in first to draw their attention. If you give him some stimpacks he will use them during battle. It's a pity his skills are so average. some of his shots are pretty far off the mark.

I usually crouch when I get into a fire fight and pull out Lincoln's repeater and have him get every as I take sweet ol' time getting everyone from far away and it seems he takes them out when they are weakened from my shooting so I don't have this problem.

I was in Tepid sewers I had my laser pistol ready to kill a raider. I got about two shots in V.A.T.S. before RL-3 stunned me with his flamer and I fell to the ground on fire and then the raider came to beat me up.

Trivia Edit

Im not too sure about your assessment of the R Lee Ermey comparison. Do you have a source for that, or are proposing that as a possibility?

Guys, sign your comments. I dunno, what he said seems reasonable. Whenever anyone thinks about Drill Sergeants you end up thinking about that character ("What is your major malfunction, numbnuts?" "Holy dog shit. Texas? Only steers and queers come from Texas, Private Cowboy. And you don't look much like a steer to me so that kinda narrows it down. Do you suck dicks?"). It's also true that he's the only one with an alphanumerical designation as opposed to a name, he speaks like a total military hardcase... The initials also stand up to scrutiny. Any reason for disagreement? --DarkJeff 16:30, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
Why would they name him after the actor and not the character in the movie. Most of the Mr Gutsys say the same things anyway. The gung-ho characters you describe are caricatures that have existed for ages.
Perhaps because the actor himself is a considerably better reference than his character? Mr. Lee is not just an actor but was an actual drill instructor, a decorated Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Marine Corp. If you were to make a reference to a Drill Sergeant stereotype, anyone who didn't just graduate from High School will recall Hartmann. Anyone clever enough to value subtlety and have the character to respect the decorated gunny who played Hartmann would reference the man, not the character. --DarkJeff 09:17, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
Disagree. Characters are much more notable, and oft-used as references then the actors that play them.

personaly, i think darkjeff is right. i didnt even read the page, but when i heard RL3 talk it definatly reminded me of movies like full metal. that combined with the simalaritys in RL3's name and lee's initials pretty much convinces me. i dont know, it may not be set in stone but its pretty close.

The name R. Lee Ermey is definitely more famous than the name of the character from the movie, which i couldnt even remember until saw it mentioned here. Not to mention that R. Lee Ermey, as himself, also hosts a military show called "Mail Call" where he adopts the same "hoo-rah" persona that he is famous for.

...and, as mentioned in the article, R. Lee Ermey has previously voiced a major character in the Fallout series! That's good enough for me. (I also agree that his name is far more memorable than his character's name.) 07:28, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

This reference could not possibly be MORE obvious. The fact that anyone even considers disagreeing with it is daft. His initials are RLE. The robot is RL3. This isn't rocket science. Those "caricatures" that supposedly "have existed for ages" were not as specific or even remotely as iconic as the one immortalized by RL in Full Metal. It was so memorable that he continued to play stereotypes of the character HIMSELF in other various roles. This robot is just one more in a long line of homages TO THAT SPECIFIC CARICATURE. This shouldn't even be a conversation, just a reference and that's it. --Decerebrated 18:41, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Bug? Edit

When I enter a new area, RL-3 comes with me and immediately falls to the floor as if he was dead. I can still talk to him and trade equipment, and his propulsion burner is still going. Anyone else get this weird behavior? Jdw 04:25, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Another bug I found, Me, Dogmeat, and Charon (glitchiest follower in the game) were traveling north to the Alien Blaster site, and we reached a MPD station and broke up a fight w/ some Talon Mercs, some Giant Radscorpions, and three Deathclaws (Nades FTW) and around the middle of the battle, at the top corner of my screen it said: "Sergeant RL-3 is unconscious." I thought nothing of it at the time, but when I heard about this occurence happening with Dogmeat, I seriously wish I'd gone back and looked, as I hate Charon and would rather have a better companion.
I wouldn't say that's a bug. He's rendered essential until you buy him (or maybe until you talk to Tinker Joe), so any marauding creatures or Raiders can knock him out. Similar behavior occurs if you don't accompany a certain someone in their travels in the beginning of The Waters of Life. Jdw 21:32, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

RL-3 Drug usage Edit

(XBox 360) I've given my RL-3 different drugs just to test what it would do with them, and I found that it will use Buffout, but not: Jet; Med-X; Mentats; alcohol; etc. Seems it will use stimpacks - but rarely. I was interested in the usage of Buffout, though. I suppose it was for the temporary boost to HP?-- 20:30, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

I am pretty sure that all followers use the buff-out for the HP replenishment... what I wonder is - what if they suffer from loss of health, outside of combat?

^sign that^ I wonder if they'll get addicted (Maverick21 23:27, 21 July 2009 (UTC))

i tried this out yes thay do i tryed giving it to casidin and if he lost health from me attacking him lets say half then i attacked him to the point he became hostile he would use a action as if picking something of the ground and his hps wpuld go up then i would surender but after a while his health will go back down if this is stacked the loss of the health affect will kill him unless you give him stimpacks and force him to heal every time he losses health from the affect before the other minus 60 hps stack to kill him

Hostile after firing Edit

I just fired RL3, to replace him with another follower, but as soon as hes fired, he turns hostile and tries to kill me! First time I was 'Very Good', but I got down to neut karma as well, and he still attacked me upon firing... Is this maybe revenge for 'friendly fire' ages ago or something? I guess I'll just kill him as a lvl20 charon will be better than him anyway lol 08:19, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

This is fixable by selecting RL-3 and doing the enable, disable, kill, resurrect commands and everything is just fine and he will let you hire him again.

I have the ps3 version what can i do to stop this from happening?-- 20:37, October 14, 2009 (UTC)

Solution to RL-3 hostility on XBox that worked well for me: I had the same problem on Xbox 360. I had neutral karma, RL-3 had not been frenzied and I hadn't killed Tinker Joe, but RL-3 was hostile on my return from Raven Rock and becomes hostile each and every time I fire him. I had used him since very early levels, so it might be as simple as him becoming attached to you after a certain amount of time - don't know and don't really care :)

Fortunately, it doesn't really matter, you can still get him to rejoin you and continue to use him to gain multiple followers, it just takes a bit more effort and planning.

Firstly, when you fast travel to Canterbury Commons to pick him up after Raven Rock, make sure you tell any followers with you to wait (or they'll probably help destroy him way too quickly) then put away your gun and run to the area outside Canterbury Commons where RL-3 will probably be fighting either the townspeople or one of the caravans. Run directly to RL-3, putting yourself as much as possible between RL-3 and the attackers - I found it always cut it very fine between getting him to finally talk and RL-3 being destroyed so don't waste time and do try to shield everyone from the firefight. Repeatedly click on RL-3 to talk until he finally talks to you. You will need neutral karma. As soon as he agrees to rejoin you fast travel the very short distance to Canterbury Commons, where you can pick up any other followers and RL-3, your followers and the townspeople/caravans are suddenly all good friends again.

Gaining multiple followers involves the extra step of taking RL-3 somewhere nowhere else is (eg: for Butch in Rivet City I told everyone else to wait inside and then took RL-3 outside, told him to wait, told him "not yet" then fired him. As usual for me, he was unhappy and became hostile, but running inside, hiring Butch and then waiting inside for 7-8 days had the desired effect - I received the message RL-3 had returned to Canterbury Commons so went and picked him up using the same technique as above, because for me it seems RL-3 is always hostile. Luckily it seemed to take a bit less time to get through to RL-3 the second time.

For Charon, I simple took RL-3 into the Museum of History outside Underworld with the same effect.

Save generously, but with quick feet and persistent clicking on RL-3 it all worked for me on the Xbox and assume it would help with the PS3 version as well.

butch better than RL-3? Edit

im playing on the 360 and finished the 6 companion glitch not too long ago and noticed that the only one i couldent get with a gitch was butch, so now i either move on and consider my party bad-ass enough or i fire one of them to make way for another. so i started thinking, wich one is less usefull? i came up with RL-3, though i love his personality he cant shoot shit so he may have to go. thats when i started to test them out by taking them to the white house for a spin, sadly i cant just console-in 20 or so badies like on a comp(though i wish i could) so that was the most viable option. through long hours of testing i have not only concluded that butch is better, but that he is actualy better at using RL-3's weapon too. if given tesla armor(plus 10 energy weapon) and an enclave officer hat(plus 5 energy weapon) and a plasma pistol with ammo he will score way more shots than RL-3. i found this to be absourd since RL-3's energy weapon skill is 50 and butch's, with all of the bonuses is only 30. my guess is that bethesda nerfed his aim somehow. this also leads me to belive that RL-3 may have been the best ally at one point but was way to powerfull so he was weakend considerably.

Well this is caused most likely from the permanent stat-upgrade for followers exploit. Every time you exit the trade menu with them and go in again, all the stats from their equipments are added again. As if they weren't wearing the equipment in the first place. So you probably traded with butch so much that his energy weapons skill was superior to RL-3's.

he disapppeared Edit

i was doing the garden of eden quest(the one u go to vault 87). And i get captured etc. when i escape RR i go to canterbury commons to look for him and he wasnt there. then i went to the robco factory to look for him and he wasnt there. And he has a lot of items i wanted to sell. Help?

I think you should just wait a week in game time. The followers don't just teleport to their waiting spots. Jdw 17:09, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

RL-3 Broken Steel, He Is Leveled Edit

I have tested on the xbox 360, to find out his strength if aquired between levels 20 - 30 of broken steel, I found that he does indeed have much more health and damage than normal. In a combat test, He easily destroyed Cross, who was equipt with T51B Winterized and an Alien Blaster (100% Condition) (Previous attempts shown that the Alien blaster was the only effective weapon that cross could use against RL-3). An estimate of health ranges around 5400 (Including DR). In summary, it seems he levels if aquired in the level 20 - 30 range, it is most likely this health is a glitch similar to Fawkes.

His damage Is most definatly 57.63, I tested that: ((343 - 292)* 1.13(My Dr was 13) = 57.63

Can anyone confirm?

Note Added In Article

Any more word on this? --Decerebrated 18:43, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

I hired him at level 10 with broken steel downloaded and he was nearly invincible. After 3 mini nukes from a mint condition fatman(40 big guns skill) He lost very little health, only like 3 bars or so. I don't think level has any effect. Also his accuracy has increased, it seems to be on par with a regular Mr. Gutsy if not even more accurate.(confirmed on Xbox 360) It looks like all creature companions have been beefed up in broken steel. A pc user will be required for pinpoint verification on his stats.

Same, i was trying to kill him,he took 10 direct pulse gernades,4 nukas, and me pounding on him with the deathclaw gauntlet(hundered unarmed, all iorn fists) took me down to the low health that makes the heartbeat sound,so i paralyzed him and ran for it, he had lost about a bar of health! at first i thought he was just immune to pulse gernades, being a follower and all,but those nukas are some baddass things.-- 19:03, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Joe Han Son

Will RL-3 level up with you if you hire him before you download Broken Steel? I am wondering this because I hired him today and then downloaded Broken Steel. -Biohazard 197

I'll give you a staight answer- No. Mary roc 20:46, March 18, 2010 (UTC)

Is it possible that the level you hire him at determines his stats? I have broken steel on the 360 and the thing is a damn juggernaut. I hired him at level 14. I've let RL3 loose in the following places: Deathclaw Sanctuary, Old Olney, Raven Rock, Megaton, Fort Independence, The Citadel, Paradise Falls, and the jefferson memorial(under control of super mutants.) Using stealth boy to stay out of the fights I started, I've watched in amazement in every instance as RL-3 singlehandedly eradicated every NPC in these locations and barely had a scratch. Dogmeat is capable of the same feats with his boosted beefy "puppies" stats that he gets even if you don't take that perk. I can stuff them full of 1000's of 5mm rounds from Eugene or 3 or 4 Mini Nukes before they go down. It's madness. They seem to be about as durable as Fawkes on my game. -- 06:47, 16 June 2009 (UTC)Anonymous

Apparently its a bug, at Level 19 with Broken Steel, Fawkes AND Dogmeat's health are both at 9500!!! Id love this but it feels like cheating, Fawkes had no problem whatsoever with a Reaver or a couple of Deathclaws when in fact he shouldve died (or nearly died). This bug affect RL-3 too, i dont know if theres a mod to fix it.
The change log or readme (I forget which) for the Unofficial Fallout Patch mentions it preventing, but not reverting, a companion health bug. On PC, selecting RL-3, and also in my case, Dogmeat, and using the "getav health" in the console gave me a value of 3150 at level 9, having hired RL-3 around level 5 or so. Dogmeat's health was about 200 higher than that, even. Broken Steel, as mentioned above, makes RL-3 scale with the Lone Wanderer so it has to be a bug with implementing that. I tried poking around in the Broken Steel .esm with the GECK, but I couldn't figure out where or how the scaling information is kept. If the notes on the Unofficial Patch are any indication, it's likely you can't mod this after the fact. --Mons Farrar
well heres my question, why try to find a mod to fix this? i mean seriously, its like hey theres a glitch where u can get 500m ammo for 5 caps! i must find and fix this horrible unjust-is how dare they allow such a mistake as to give me so much wealth/ammo? the NERVEToolazytomakeaaccount 04:07, October 17, 2009 (UTC)

RL-3 the PSYCHOPATH!!! Edit

Ok, I have on my team right now Cross, Fawkes, Charon, and Dogmeat's Puppy. I was location hunting and found I needed a location near RobCo, so I popped over there and was heading towards it, when out of the blue RL-3, who I have never hired, just started attacking us. This was also in Broken Steel mode, and it took us about a full freaking minute to take this guy out, and I was amazed at how strong he was. This made me want to acquire him, but now I'm afraid he will be hostile toward me even when I reload the save. Any ideas on what is going on and how I can fix this?( 17:51, 20 June 2009 (UTC))

^Someone didn't sign their post.

He should be at the Robco facility. No idea why he's not there or why he was hostile when he was there before. Try starting a new game.-- 06:50, 16 June 2009 (UTC)Anonymous

I've been using RL-3 for a bit and just made my first stop into Megaton with him. Walking through to Craterside he was fine. As we exited, Jericho ran up and opened fire for no reason (he showed as yellow to me). This was followed by RL-3 turning him into a gooey ball of plasma-induced carnage, and the entire town opening up on him. He just mowed through Nathan, The Sherrif, about 18 random "Megaton Settlers" and is chewing his way through the town pretty quickly. I suspect this is his unstable personality and not a bug, but his run-in with Jerich, where Jericho attacked makes me think there's something else going on there.

WTF Where did he go!?! Edit

I fired him and he broke my followers, i can't rehire anyone and i can't find and kill him i looked everywhere at Canterbury and no sign of him.--Wastelander6969 08:38, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

Quotes Edit

I heard a quote that I saw wasn't on the article, but I don't remember the exact quote so if somebody could watch out for something along the lines of "Since you won't do the world a favor a kill yourself, I'll just have to do it for you!" I'd put it on the article but it's just what I can remember him saying a while back, it's not exact.

for one, i think that's correct, two he often says "Sir, Searching for targets" when idle.

Did we get "Step forward and identify yourself" ? 07:10, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

I think the General MacArthur quote was: "Old war veterans never die, they just fade away" - James 22:04, October 5, 2009 (UTC)

broken steel level up thing Edit

so i had him durning broken steel not knowing that he was leveling up with me (just read that today) and i think i had him untill level 27, cuz i took the escalator to heaven perk to aquire fawkes. So does that mean that RL-3 is floating around as a level 27 in canteburry right now?

Yeah, so don't make him mad. He already has an insane amount of health at level 10. -- 01:23, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
Well as long as you didn't fire him he'll still be loyal to you. At least that's what I heard and read. I'm going to get him shortly and I'll report back.--KnightNapier 04:00, December 6, 2009 (UTC)

Combat replaced Edit

Combat Edit

RL-3 uses a weaker version of the Plasma rifle at long range, and a very effective Flamer at close range. His aim with the plasma gun is actually rather average, and actually somewhat worse than that of a standard Mr. Gutsy model. Like all robots, he is extremely vulnerable to Energy Weapons, Big Guns and strong melee attacks like those from Yao guais and Deathclaws. He does however appear to be highly resistant to flame attacks, such as those from Fire Ants. Sergeant RL-3 repairs himself automatically after combat. In addition, despite his mechanical nature, if stimpaks are placed in his inventory he will use them to heal himself during a firefight. His best use is in small to moderate party kills, i.e. Raiders, Slavers and the like.

Much like Fawkes, RL-3 does not sneak, and will rush off to battle with any detected enemy, thus he is not recommended for situations where stealth is a necessity.

Unlike the other Fallout 3 followers, RL-3 has fixed stats instead of leveling proportionally with the player. As a result, he's quite strong at low player levels, but can become outclassed at higher levels. If the Broken Steel add-on is installed, his stats and level will level up acording to the player's level, up to level 30.

I'm moving this here for archiving or whatever, I largely replaced this section with a larger more extensive section, but I felt I should keep this one around anyway. Most of what I wrote covered the basics of combat and that other, off tone, big guns article. But tried to present it in a stabler more technical tone. If anyone has some suggestions just take it up with me. I check my email for posts often. 07:10, 19 August 2009 (UTC).

I showed Flak he needs to be more careful about his weapons and hit him with a hammer which I bought from him. My RL-3 killed everyone in there at the time (except C.J., Shrapnel and Christine Young) and I did not lose any Karma still making me a Protector.

After every combat, RL-3 stays at his position unless I call him, which makes them very annoying. Anyone else seen this bug?

Stats Edit

Could we make the section on stats into an extension of the RL-3 info card/table graph thing? 07:15, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Re-hiring a hostile RL-3 Edit

After completing The Pitt DLC I went to Canterbury Commons to rehire RL3 but he was immediately hostile to me, informing me I was 'unfit for command'. Reloading an earlier save didn't change his hostility. I found running right up to him (while he was burning me with his flamer) and repeatedly clicking on him gave the dialog option '(karma) Time to get back into the fight RL-3" after which he become non-hostile and re-joined me as a follower 04:27, September 11, 2009 (UTC) Check the article "Bug" section, shows how to resovle this Mr Uchiha 03:08, December 6, 2009 (UTC)

Hiring sargent RL-3 Edit

i already fixed this problem but its interesting to note it to peeps, well i was using dogmeats puppy to get followers and went to get him, so i had about 4 people including the dog and fired the dog, popped a frag grenade in his inventory through pickpocketing, and bam hes dead, so i go buy sargent RL-3 and turn around and followers are gunning down the robots because apparently RL-3 gets mad if u kill the dog, even if its through sneak attack, annoyed the hell out of me. well i fixed it but i figured in case no one knew hed do this, due to the whole no info on main page/no info on here.Toolazytomakeaaccount 17:09, October 15, 2009 (UTC)

RL-3's Gender referencing Edit

I'd like to ad that even though RL-3 is voiced by a male actor and say's "another glorious day in this mans army" he is neither here nor there as far as sex. Being a robot RL-3 cannot have a sex, however capable of a gender. If any references are made to it please avoid saying "Him" or "His" if at all possible. RL-3 is a robot, and robots have to sex.Aryeonos 00:50, October 29, 2009 (UTC)

Did you mean "RL-3 is a robot, and robots have no sex." 19:30, October 30, 2009 (UTC)
Well, if anyone watched Star Wars or Artificial Intelligence, they'll realize that robots are generally programmed with masculine or feminine personalities. Protectrons and Sentry Bots don't have personalities and speaking in a monotone voice. Mr. Guties and Mr. Handies are programmed to act like an American soldier or a British butler respectively while the Robobrain has a feminine personality. This means that while RL-3 is a robot, he's programed to act like a man so he'll refer to himself as a man.--KnightNapier 03:01, December 6, 2009 (UTC)

Lost him! Edit

Lost him when I went to Point Lookout and got the message that he went to Canterbury Commons (which I had not "found" yet). After I returned to the Wasteland and went to find Canterbury Commons, he was not there. Traveled away and waited for a week (game time, of course!) and went back but he was still not there. Could he have been killed on the way? He was pretty tough. He took a beating from a Behemoth for a loooong time before I killed the Behemoth with seemingly little damage. Maybe it is because I hadn't "discovered" Canterbury Commons yet???

- Hmmm... Found him. I didn't realize he was so far outside. Not sure he was there before. Sorry for any confusion. Can't figure out how to delete this post... - Glendale1 00:59, December 7, 2009 (UTC)

RL-3 Edit

For all of you I'd really like to say that, I think you've forgotten the RL-3 Is a little bit cranky (that was mentioned by tinker joe) so i think when you fir him he gets mad and turns hostile on you, for firing him.

My RL-3 Experience Edit

RL-3 has been a spectacular ally for me and I haven't used any other of the companions as a result (in the save I am currently playing). I fire him on a regular basis and he never goes berserk on me. He just goes to Canterbury Commons and waits there until I come along and ask him to come back.

It is true his aim with his plasma bolts is terrible, but I actually like this because it lets me get plenty of shots in, thus guaranteeing me experience for the kill. He mostly just tanks for me, since his health is extravagant. I walked into the Deathclaw Sanctuary and let him wander around for a while-- at one point he had 4 Deathclaw attacking him for a good minute (since I wasn't helping, and his damage sucks). His health went down 2 bars.

I do have Broken Steel installed.

I was wandering around the RobCo building with Cross and dogmeat on the Xbox 360 and RL3 came out of nowhere and attacked us! he was as tough as a tank! and when we took him down he was only unconsious! When he came alive he had full health and was friendly,so i bought him.--N'thro Notadee 11:52, February 28, 2010 (UTC)

Wont Repair? (xbox 360 Edit

Is anyone else having this problem? I used RL-3 for a long time and all of the sudden he stopped repairing himself. He has 4 bars of health left and pretty much anything will kill him.

Died for no reason? (PS3 GOTY)Edit

So I was in Takoma Industrial Park and left RL-3 just outside the gate where the behemoth is so I could take it out on my own. I killed all the super mutants and the behemoth and then headed inside the auto repair shop to loot it. Went out side and got the "RL-3 is dead" pop-up. I went over to where I left him. No new corpses from any enemies nor new enemies. Couldn't even find his body. I reloaded but the most recent save was auto save from leaving the garage. As soon as it loads I get the same pop-up but now his body is there. Still no new enemies or dead bodies of new enemies. So... Anyone know what happened? 10:00, April 13, 2010 (UTC)

possible bug? Edit

Well, I found Tinker Joe and the Sarge, but even with neutral karma, I can't buy him. When I select the Karma option, after a small dialogue, the only option it gives me is something about I'll pass because I don't want a crazy robot following me around. Anyone else know what's wrong? I only have Dogmeat following me at the moment.

i you have broken steel download you have a choice at level 22 thares a perk called puppys ti's stupid but thares an advantige. if dogmeat dies he respondes being called "dogmeats puppy" if he die one nothing happens, then dogmeat has double the heath and double the damage, then if he die again you cant get any more follwers but you can only get dogmeat. it sucks never get it unless your a fan of dog meat.

RL-3 like my robot bro Edit

i allways had RL-3 and i'm the think personly that he's my robo bro. we can take care of any thing. no not librity prime. like an overlord i shoot the tri- beam rifle out of its hand (its not a boy becuse he has no balls or noodle). then we mow it down. he allways has badass languege. like " ahhh the nice smell of plasma in the morning" or or "im angery you would not like me when im angery". he's not weak if you say he is your an ass becuse my RL-3 tuck out a behemoth on his own. ha suck on that. well unless you don't have you can say he's weak then i perfer jarioco or charon.

RL-3, like all Mister Gutsy robots, will sometimes say "Kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out" and "Kill 'em all, God will understand". Since it's not unique to RL-3, and since there's already 5 quotes listed, it shouldn't be re-added to the article. Kris mailbox 03:09, August 16, 2010 (UTC)

Full Scaling Stats Edit

What are his stats if Broken Steel is installed for proper scaling? Does his health improve, and do all skills make it to 100? Mictlantecuhtli 02:42, August 18, 2010 (UTC)

Strange Graphical ErrorEdit

Soon after acquiring RL-3 at a low level, I found a raider-occupied cave. After clearing it out and leaving, I soon realized that Dogmeat, with whom had also been traveling, had vanished. I reloaded a previous save, thinking that he may have died somehow, and saw that he was nowhere to be found. However, whenever I look in RL-3's direction, the screen becomes a mess of gray and green shapes, consistent with RL-3's colouration, with RL-3 himself floating in the midst of it. I reloaded again and the same thing happened. After waiting for twelve hours, Dogmeat came back but RL-3 is still experiencing the graphical error, and I will most likely have to reload an even earlier save-game. Has anyone else seen this before? I play on the PS3, GotY Version. RolandVH 05:56, December 4, 2010 (UTC) EDIT: restarting the console appears to have fixed the problem. Change to companion infoEdit

At the top it says "and can be a companion in 2277" Shouldnt this be changed to "and is a possible companion in fallout 3"?

Aimless BotEdit

If tinker joe is killed before you get to him (as in my case), RL3 will just aimlessly wander the countryside killing whatever hostile he spots. Player will not be able to interact with him other than getting a short one liner. Mechacode 08:57, June 7, 2011 (UTC)

Being Pedantic.. Edit

At several points on this page Sergeant RL-3 is referred to as having a gender, and is a 'he'. However, robots surely don't have genders.. --StarfishCostume 17:33, August 12, 2011 (UTC)

He's programmed with a masculine personality, so he uses the masculine pronoun. Personal_Sig_Image.gif Tagaziel (call!) 09:22, August 12, 2011 (UTC)
Still doesn't reaaaally make him a male, alas, I will accept this reasoning. --StarfishCostume 17:33, August 12, 2011 (UTC)
It completely makes him masculine - he has a "gender" in the anthropological sense. However, you are right that he has no "sex" in the biological sense. Gender ¬≡ Sex. Plus plasma pistols and flamethrowers are clearly euphemisms. 21:58, August 16, 2011 (UTC)
[Sociology] That's correct. Sex is based on physical attributes. Gender is a social construct. Dude101 22:06, August 16, 2011 (UTC)

Turns out, you *can* get Sergeant RL-3 killed Edit

Went to clear out Fort Bannister (Talon Company Stronghold) after the BoS water caravan got jacked. Jensen got himself killed even after I freed him. I went into HQ and cleaned out the place one corridor at a time. Turns out, Sergeant RL-3 *can* die if enough firepower overwhelmed him. I got surrounded by Talon guys and even with 3 BoS knights around me and I'm fully decked out level 26 with some heavy firepower I still got worn down to half health.

The status still says "severely damaged", though I did get the companion "Sergeant RL-3 has been destroyed!" pop-up before. There's no option to repair, and I can only loot its corpse like anything else.

Wonder if there's a replacement, and why isn't this listed under Mister Gutsy variants?

Also, the Talon guys have a "Corporal Reaver", also a Mister Gutsy.

HELP Question about the Sarge leaving me! Edit

Will I lose Sergeant RL-3 if my karma changes AFTER I buy him? So lets say I steal a bunch of stuff or save a fluffy kitten from a wood chipper, would moving into positive or negative from neutral cause him to disparty? ~a nooblet 21:51, January 26, 2013 (UTC)

No, but when you fire him, you won't be able to recruit him until your Karma is back to Neutral. Energy X Signature0 21:55, January 26, 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the info and especially the super quick reply! ~the same nooblet 22:02, January 26, 2013 (UTC)

Quick Question Edit

Why does it say on the page he only appears in Fallout 3, when above his picture that e appears in both 3 AND New Vegas50.124.8.104 17:28, April 10, 2013 (UTC)

I found why. While it is not in the game, it, along with many other characters and items from 3, are in Fallout: New Vegas's files, just unused. Somebody found this and decided to add that it's in New Vegas, which is incorrect. Paladin117>>iff bored; 17:32, April 10, 2013 (UTC)

Cant re-hire after The American Dream (xbox) Edit

I had RL-3 with me and loaded up with gear during the "Findig the Garden of Eden" quest. He disapeared when the enclave captured me. I figured he would spawn outside near fawkes when I left the compound but to my surprise he did not. I read this article and discovered that I could find him at Canterbury Commons if he ever gets dismissed, so I traveled there and I did indeed find him but I cant talk to him. He just says "Another glorious day in this mans army" every time I try to talk to him. Also his name just says "Mister Gutsy" now (even though his paint job and voice is still the unique RL-3 variant, and if I kill him he doesnt have any of the gear I left him with. I read in the bugs section that if this happens I can just reload the most recent save and I will be able to talk to him again but this does not appear to be true, nothing changes. I even tried closing the game and clearing my xbox cache and reloading, but still nothing. I dont have any saves from before I lost him so I basically just permanently lost my follower and all of the gear he was carrying. Tjwoosta (talk) 23:48, November 28, 2013 (UTC)

Nevermind, Im dumb, The Mister Gutsy I was talking to was one that apparently respawned from the AntAgonist vs Mechanist battle. I eventually found the real RL-3 over by the tree where the merchants stop. I never realized before that the Mechanist's Gutsy has the same paint and voice as RL-3.
