Can someone add the base id for this quest? Thanks

Timeline

I'm one of those players that can't bear to do things "out of order" or in a way that doesn't make sense. :p But this quest confuses me. Because you have to go to virtually every corner of the wasteland in order to complete it, yet this quest is a... not "prerequisite" exactly, but it feeds into the Forlorn Hope 'storyline', because completing it gives you 'points' towards the number of NCR guys you get for backup when assaulting Nelson. I am aware that you can get the max number of guys without this quest (because there are 12 points and the max only requires 10), but it still seems weird.

Anyway, my question is, would assaulting Nelson and rescuing the hostages BEFORE completing this quest screw up this questline from a "story" point of view? I mean, they can't really expect my guy to go to the extreme southeast, then the other side of New Vegas, and then up to the northwest (areas I wouldn't 'naturally' visit for bloody ages if I followed the story), all before assaulting Nelson. So I want to get Nelson out of the way, then carry on with the story, then complete this quest almost by accident as I complete other quests. But if it's going to screw things up then I guess I'll have to...

Change of heart

At first i decided to let him continue his plot but thinking back i changed my mind and want to reset the quest to turn him in.Would someone please add the base id for this one?

The Consequences of Your Actions...

Forgive me if this is not the place to ask such a question, or if the question itself sounds odd in any way. I was wondering if anyone could explain, in detail, the consequences of each of the three choices you are able to make at the end of this quest (Return To Sender)? Any help would be most appreciated, thank you very much! I am considering keeping Chief Hanlon's secret, but I would like to be sure about the consequences of this, first.173.35.102.172 17:19, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Yes this 'detailed walkthrough' is severly lacking in informtion, what are the consequenses of allowing him to continue with his plan

Possible Bug

When I completed this this game sound went out of sync, and on attempting to leave the building, the game froze at a black screen with music still playing. The auto-save file was then corrupted. Anyone else experience this issue? (Xbox 360) Roberek 00:31, October 26, 2010 (UTC)

i had a similar issue with another mission. to fix it, i loaded the save, but pressed the big X in the center of the controller (keep the menu up). when the save loaded, i left it for about twenty seconds then closed the menu, everything was fine

Base id

I found the quest base id through geck but for some reason the quest will not reset (Maybe it needs other ncr quests reset as-well?).The quest in geck is vmsrsglobalcommbreakdown with base id 0010D229.Can someone verify my findings?

Define bug

"If you already did the unmarked quest for Ranger Station Charlie it won't appear as one of the targets, though the dialogue option still exists to inform Reyes that Charlie has been wiped out. The quest can then be completed normally. (confirmed on PC and Xbox)."

How is that a bug when there's implemented a dialog choice/solution for it?

Agreed, that should be a note, not a bug. --GryphonQ 00:14, October 30, 2010 (UTC)

It is a defect because the Pip-Boy lists it as a chore and there is a map marker although visiting the empty station serves no purpose, so I do not agree. It is a cosmetic bug and it is distracting, but the quest can be completed if Station Charlie's team has met its doom at the time of this quest. 76.126.112.73 19:32, November 2, 2010 (UTC)

It's marked as an objective because Reyes doesn't know Charlie was wiped out, not because of developer oversight. She even says so in the dialogue when you report back. Or weren't you paying attention? --68.91.148.51 19:36, November 4, 2010 (UTC)

I agree that it is a bug, because after having completed the unmarked quest at Ranger Station Charlie, you do not have the option to report it to Reyes, even knowing beforehand that the station is destroyed (and it STILL appears as an objective)99.48.73.130 21:50, November 4, 2010 (UTC)Yumly

So let me recap just to confirm: the quests 'Andy and Charlie' and 'Return to Sender' do not create a conflict if you do them in either order, because the dialogue option to tell Reyes that Charlie has been wiped out DOES exist. However, if you completed 'Andy and Charlie' first, the dialogue option is not immediately available when receiving the 'Return to Sender' quest, forcing the Courier to return to Charlie even already knowing its fate before Reyes can be informed. While that's a bit of an annoying oversight, I wouldn't call it a bug, because both quests can still be completed without issue. It's just that: an oversight and a minor continuity error. Due to reports that you're able at some point to tell Reyes, even if you can't tell her up front when receiving her quest, presumably you would just need to fast travel to Charlie (since having been there for 'Andy and Charlie' you've obviously already discovered the location) and back to tell her this. Annoying, yes, and possibly a waste of resources in Hardcore mode, but again, not a bug. Just an oversight in the writing. 70.119.96.55 19:47, June 14, 2012 (UTC)

Changed XP for Turning in Hanlon

The entry had 650XP for turning in Hanlon. When I walked through the options I only received 500XP. This is using the current (as of today) version of the game on the Xbox 360.

Bugged all to hell

I decided to turn him in, he locked himself in his office, and I left to get a ranger. However, after I left the building, he locked the door and started blathering on the PA. Now when I go back, the door is key locked, he's still alive, and he won't kill himself.

I've tried unlocking the door via console and re-initiating his little speech, but he won't close the door and talk again. What can I do to resolve this quest?

^^^ I have the same issue, don't know what to do.

I also have same issue- Door is locked an inaccessible after you decide to turn him in but he doesn't commence his speech on the PA or commit suicide. 1.20 patch hasn't resolved it. Tried re-setting the via console as per instructions below and using various other console commands but same bug occurs. The only thing I can think of is something to do with me previously speaking to him on the balacony before the quest 'Return to Sender'. Didn't see any harm in doing this as it is supposed to be a 'sandbox' RPG after all. Quest will update and complete if I choose to keep his secret or to kill him, but not if I try to take the option to turn him in. Waited all this time for a patch which specifically mentions fix for the quest 'Return to Sender' and it is still bugged.

      • I have this exact issue with the latest patch (yesterday)

Ranger Hanlon won't kill himself, locks the door and never gives his speech. If you console unlock the door he sits there staring at you. If you help him along and shoot him in the head the quest fails.

Bethsoft help is useless. All they do is send you a link to the wiki page. Anyone who actually has a brain in their head figure out a workaround? I love fallout, love this game, but this should NEVER have shipped with this many bugs.

      • Same issue, but only after recent patch (December, 2010)

I did this quest on my first run-through (Xbox360), but my file became completely and irreversibly corrupted, so I had to start over about a week ago. I finally got to this quest again, got to the point where I was going to turn Hanlon in, and now I can't. I've tried numerous little changes, but still nothing. Sometimes when I leave his office, he locks the door and then nothing happens at all-no speech, no quest update, no nothing. Then other times he'd start his speech, but it always ended right after he said "rangers, I've got some bad news." WTF happened with the patch?!?! As if starting over isn't annoying enough. For the record, I tried clearing the cache and tried loading from an earlier save (and redoing the legwork again)...still no go. 68.34.219.95Deanna

      • Possible solution (January, 2010)

I was working on this based on a tip I read and here is what I found out. If you run against the door, looking in, your sight will turn red on the desk and the filing cabinet. I was able to shoot add hit Hanlon a few times prompting him to tell me to watch my self. I noticed if you use a weapon like grenade launcher it will alarm the NCR in the building and they will attack. I was able to use my plasma rifle without alerting anyone. I tried Pushy and got Hanlon to shoot at me but then other NCR were alerted. I tried the incinerator and only hurt myself. I was able to hit Hanlon with the laser rifle but with about the same result as the plasma rifle. I hit Hanlon the most while using the multiplas rifle but ran out of ammo. Explosives did nothing, I used 9 C4s at the door. I assume if you can kill Hanlon the quest should end. 68.96.56.209 06:36, January 6, 2011 (UTC) Jerimiah

Possible solution Same bug for me, but after reloading from both hard and quick saves no avail. Until I brought up my Pip-boy while researching a solution. Eventually (about the length of his speech) I heard a gunshot followed by the Ranger nearest Hanlon's office rushing to confirm the death.

What I did was, I left the building when Hanlon locked the door, reentered, killed the ranger by the front desk, and reloaded the autosave. He continued his speech after reloading, killed himself, and the quest completed. I did this on XBOX. Might be worth a shot if you're stuck.--173.210.173.102 01:26, July 22, 2011 (UTC)

Reset Quest

I managed to reset the quest using Base ID 14f3b1. Since some of the dialogue is gone from the previous complete I used setstage to go through some of the objectives. Here's how I did it:

resetquest 14f3b1

talk to Reyes for help

setstage 14f3b1 20 (all stations upgraded)

talk to Reyes setstage 14f3b1 50 (assigned to speak to Hanlon)

setstage 14f3b1 60 (sent to investigate leak)

movetoqt

If Hanlon is dead now's the time to resurrect him

prid 106d79

resurrect

go to the balcony, wait for Hanlon, talk to Hanlon for reports, meet Hanlon in his office

choose your side (wisely this time XD) and complete the quest

return to Reyes

resetquest 10d229 to reset her final dialogue

talk to Reyes

[Help] Obtaining a Different Ending

I originally chose to turn Hanlon in once I discovered what he'd been doing, but now I want to both convince him to stop falsifying reports AND keep his secret (i.e., he gets to live and the Rangers get a happy ending). Is there any way to reset Hanlon's dialogue? Or any other way that you can use console commands to change the game ending directly? Thanks!

--Ralthimar 19:12, July 2, 2011 (UTC)

Ranger Ending

I've completed Return to Sender, but I don't get anything about Hanlon or the Rangers in my ending. This happens no matter how I decide to complete the quest, before or after I reset the quest and with or without the patch. Any ideas?

Skerrigansc 21:37, November 22, 2010 (UTC)

Fixed. I did For Auld Lang Syne and I got everything :)

Caesar's Illness?

I noticed that I have dialog options about Caesar's illness at the point where I can talk about my killing Caesar. I presume I got this option because I excised that intel out of the captured Centurion back at McCarran. Does it have the same result as telling Hanlon that I killed Caesar?

--MadCat221 20:26, November 22, 2010 (UTC)

Yes, it's the same result. Btw, did you kill Caesar? Because I also got the info from the Centurion, but I didn't kill Caesar and didn't get the illness option.

Skerrigansc 21:45, November 22, 2010 (UTC)

I killed ceasar and had several new options. i have the choice to tell him he's ill and could die anytime OR to tell him that i killed ceasar...

Ranger Station Charlie still set as an objective

After speaking to Ranger Andy in Novac, I investigated Ranger Station Charlie. I found that the station had been overrun my Legionaries and I reported my findings to him. I got to Camp Forlorn Hope and spoke to Sergeant Reyes and started the Return to Sender quest. Ranger Station Charlie is still set as not having been completed. Iread in this article that you can still complete the quest but I just want to make sure... Will it work? IceTyrant89

New Patch and supposed glitch

Not sure if this is a permanent fix or anything, but I ran into the issue of him not committing suicide after leaving his room. He states his first line of dialogue then nothing. I paused the game, and shortly afterwords the achievement unlocked and the quest completed. In case anyone else is having this issue, hopefully it helps.

This is really gay. I have the same problem with this guy not doing anything. I want the revolver!!--174.0.58.23 02:33, March 2, 2011 (UTC)

possible FIX

Ok, not a 'fix' persay, but it's certainly a way to get rid of the quest for all those OCD people like myself.

quite simply, i got the tesla cannon and fired it at hanlon's locked door. it killed him in seconds. the quest itself fails but at least it's off your list. i'm assuming an explosive at the door will have the same effects.

for best outcome i would wait until dark so there's less rangers to start firing at you. then quickly leave and then fast travel with the rest of your party.

hope this 'helps'.

BUG/EXPLOIT

I started the quest and went everywhere but to Staion Foxtrot. Then I went to Ranger Andy. When i went back to Staion Charlie, it updated the quest Return To Sender.--Christian Broach 23:14, April 28, 2011 (UTC)

Getting the gun

I found that if you're just behind the ranger in the doorway you can get the gun. It's somewhat difficult to align it properly and it's near invisible due to it being behind the desk most the way.

get the seqioua easily

i found that if you let him continue with his radio transmittings he will return to the balcony and if you can make your character remain hidden you can kill him with a SILENCED weapon i used the 12.7mm machinegun but this will allow you to loot his body for the gun with no penalties well besides karma but worth it right? posted by shadowocelot

Caesar's Sickness

So is the only way to get the Caesar's sickness option by starting Et Tumor Brute? Because I thought that by advancing that far along the Legion's storyline it causes you to fail Don't Tread on the Bear, making NCR hostile towards you permanently, in which case how can you even talk with Hannibal? Is there another way to get the illness option?

-- Any news on this? I have a look at the scripts, and dialog options that contain phrase about Ceasers illness dosen't seems active/scripted and haven't any requiremnts set. P.S. Lastest patch.

-I did this quest on one of my Legion Characters. I equipped a disguise and sneak-killed all the rangers, and ran up to Hanlon; however, I did not see any option about Caesar's illness. Xbox 360. Watashig 05:37, May 24, 2012 (UTC)

-Just did this quest on PC a handful of times on a playthrough with Caesar alive, and Et Tumor Brute? triggered but not complete. I got no dialogue options relating to Caesar's illness. Might try again on same playthrough but having completed Et Tumor Brute to see if that gives the dialogue. --216.164.50.35 19:08, August 29, 2012 (UTC)AnonFallouter

Console command to have the proper endings/Reyes discussion if you successfully convince him to stop

As of August 2013 (and probably forever), the bug "Due to a scripting error, if you convince the chief to stop falsifying records, you will get the ending where you agreed to keep his secret safe" still happen. To have the proper ending, and the proper discussion with Reyes back at Forlon camp, you can use this console command (PC only, AFAIK) : set "0014f3b1".nHanlonOutcome to 3 (don't forget the quotes) If you set it to 1, you'll have the suicide ending, 2 is for agreeing with him. It could also be usefull you want to have a different ending/discussion, or to solve a bug for another outcome. Hope this help. 82.239.92.214 00:41, August 3, 2013 (UTC)

800 xp

talked to reyes. I went to upgrade the stations. went back to reyes. went to the three stations to check on reports. went to camp golf, silently killed hanlon on the balcony. went to reyes, she said hanlon was probably behind but since he's dead we'll never know. 800xp
