Stub & Cleanup needed Edit

This articles a stub someone needs to mark it as so and try to add some more stuff about molerats

Origins? Edit

How can we be sure that the Pentagon terminal was speaking of mole rats? I was under the impression that the creatures were Deathclaws. They seem more useful as bio-weapons against China, being 12 feet tall, vicious, and reproducing like crazy and all. That, and the fact that the Enclave controls Deathclaws, not mole rats. Nitpicker of the Wastes 22:53, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

The terminal also says "Current MUL development primarily uses genetic stock of rodents, particularly the common sewer rat, and progress has been significant." So no, it can't be deathclaws (although they're genetically engineered too). Ausir 22:21, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
It never occurred to me that Mole Rats may be the critters that the terminal in question was talking about... Also Deathclaws are too conspicuous. They would draw too much attention, and still would not breed nearly anywhere near as much as Mole Rats would. Also, considering the phenomenon of the killswitch, and their cranially explosive reaction to Moira's little concoction, Mole Rats are the most likely candidate for being the transgenic species that the terminal refers to. --MadCat221 03:50, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Partners? Edit

Sometimes when I'm walking around i find Yao Gaui beside it is a mole rat and they dont attack each other then walk together. if you attack one the other attacks.

Is there a connection between the two?

Highly unlikely, animals rarely participate in altruistic behavior even within their own species, let alone across-species. The behavior normally only arises in populations that have extended contact (i.e. they can 'remember' how they were treated during previous encounters) and the payoff in terms of energy and resources to the participating species can be seen to consistently outweigh the energy expended to perform the altruistic act or to "go it alone". It is unlikely that the populations of Yao Gaui and Mole Rate fit into this model as the Yao Gaui is an apex predator while the Mole Rat is several rungs lower on the food chain. However, there IS a slight chance that a FEMALE Yao Gaui could ADOPT the mole rats, mistaking them for cubs of her own species as they are not so very different in size and stature to what a Yao Gaui cub would look like. This phenomenon is more common than reciprocal altruism. --DashMan54 14:56, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Species? Edit

Based on their physiology, it is more likely that the giant mole rats from FO3 are descended from actual subterranean naked mole rats (Heterocephalus Glaber), where as their west coast counterparts are more likely to have evolved from a species of actual mole (not rat) as they posses a furry coat and other "mole-like" characteristics. Moles, in general, are quite hairy and it is quite possible that the average wastelander would be hard-pressed to draw a line of distinction between a large rodent that evolved from a mole, and one evolved from a rat.

Also, the pig rats found on the west coast are more likely to have evolved from a species of shrew than a species of rat based on the observation that they have "pig-like" features. Many species of shrew have an elongated, fleshy snout that, if increased in size, could easily resemble a pig-like snout.

In my opinion the only species of "mole rat" that actually might have evolved from common modern-day rats would be the giant rat population on the west coast. --DashMan54 14:40, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Swimming? Edit

OK so today I found this badly wounded Mole Rat outside of Grandma Sparkles shack. It ran away from me whenever I came near it so I decided to chase it. Eventually it ran into the water and swam. I'm not sure if this is a bug because I had never seen one swim before...Has anyone else seen this? Matt 20:26, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Stupid Question? Edit

lol sorry, I couldn't resist. --206.75.130.250 01:16, October 26, 2009 (UTC)

Because it's so much more intelligent to comment on someone without showing whom you are commenting on. 94.220.214.112 01:20, July 30, 2010 (UTC)

Based on this? Edit

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naked_mole_rat - seems very similar to this, down to the very high pain tolerance, also pictures from the bottom of the page http://bogleech.com/bio-mammals2.html Setimir92 17:26, October 30, 2009 (UTC) Yep. At least visually, the mole rats are certainly modeled after this weird little creature.--Gothemasticator 17:57, October 30, 2009 (UTC)

Which in turn brings up the question of how an entire family of creatures ended up in America to begin with, since the Naked Mole Rat is native only to East Africa.76.252.164.117 10:10, January 13, 2011 (UTC)

Anyone notice that those two prongs sticking out of their head aren't the mouth? They have this huge hole in their face.

That brings up the question.

How in the bloody Hell do they eat? Unless they feed by tossing food into their mouth, or simply subsist by drinking.

Please help...I've tried looking for Mole Rats behind Megaton, killed them with the Repellent Stick for the Quest and I'm having trouble finding others.

I'm only around levels 9-10, so I'm not willing to risk my life against Raiders.

HELP!

Tepid sewers. There aren't many raiders along the way, but do bring a pistol too. 84.249.199.61 14:33, June 18, 2010 (UTC)

The Enclave have said that it is related to the Naked Mole Rat. I just checked on wikipedia and it says exactly what that said in terms of origins:

The Victorious Phoenix

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Rodentia
Family: Bathyergidae
Subfamily: Heterocephalinae

Landry, 1957

Genus: Heterocephalus

Rüppell, 1842

Species: H. glaber

Mole Rat Race Track Edit

I'm currently watching a (German) Let's Play of Fallout 3 where kind of a race track for mole rats can be seen, obviously built by raiders to their joy. I don't know where it is, but it is seen in this youtube video (at 1:00 or so).

Further information can be found in the Mole rat race track article.   phoenix  txt  Mini-FO3 Logo2 11:48, April 5, 2010 (UTC)

Oh. Wonder why this is not mentioned in this article. Thx.

Animal Perk & The Wasteland Survivor Quest! Edit

Hello!

My current character just got the "Animal Friend" Perk prior to getting to the part of the book research quest where one has to deal with animals. How does one do the quest with said Perk and not kill the new animal friends?

That's what I came here to find out!

SplitEdit

Before we talk about splitting this article, remember that there is only one kind of molerat, not many variations (such as a Centaur). It would be wierd to split this article but there are no variations.(Nemerian 15:04, April 27, 2011 (UTC))
