Who gives you this quest, I went to Crocker but he doesn't start it. Is it only for people with the perk Wild Wasteland?

Crocker gives you the quest after OR failed the 1st mission you get from him.

roaringjohn (talk) 12:25, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, I didn't really understand that. Crocker gives me the quest (King's Gambit) after what?

70.176.82.125 17:10, October 24, 2010 (UTC)Runn!ng_W!ld

Crocker 1st gives you Things That Go Boom then if you became hostile to the Boomers and talk to him you fail that quest but if you DON'T and see if you can talk to them and find the dialogues they have about Crocker you can than succeed that quest and than you get this 2nd quest.

Not King's Gambit[]

This article seems to describe some other quest. The King's Gambit is where you have to kill Pacer for Crocker, and make it look like anyone but the NCR did it.86.42.206.36 12:35, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

Colonel Hsu doesn't seem related to this quest AT ALL[]

Since I took the King's favor before getting this quest, I can't solve it diplomatically. I came here hoping to find how I can kill Pacer without making it look like an NCR hit and I see that there's another diplomatic solution involving Colonel Hsu. No dialogue options pop up in-relation to ANYTHING in Freeside, other than the quests with the Fiend leaders.

I would have to agree with one of the other topics that whoever wrote this article was fucking high on every type of chem in the world and just wrote a bunch of random bullshit that only partly corresponds to this quest.

As to the question of killing Pacer w/out making it look like an NCR hit was (and I can't claim credit for it, I found it here) to follow him to his room, close the door, sneak up behind him and give him the old "Shady Sands Shuffle" using a Plasma grenade (Fallout: New Vegas), which apparently implicates the Van Graffs instead of the NCR. Colonel Hsu and this Quest[]

Colonel Hsu does in fact relate to this quest. If you have already completed G I Blues, and attempt to ask The King to solve the problem diplomatically, he will refuse, at which point you are given the objective to return to the Ambassador, who will give you the option of visiting Col Moore or Col Hsu. Col Moore will supposedly send you back with a group of armed soldiers (I didn't try this way), whereas Col Hsu will give the option of diplomacy through increasing supplies to Freeside. The fight with Pacer does break out as mentioned, as he is opposed to the deal, but The King will easily agree to it.--121.98.80.77 09:25, October 26, 2010 (UTC)

Confirmed. Hsu is an option if you first speak to the Ambassador and talk about his dislike for Col Moore's meathods.

I had already completed G.I. Blues and used my favor. I went to Crockett, then to the King, then back to Crockett, to Hsu and back to the King. The NCR troopers are there, but I get no special dialogue from the King, Hsu or Crockett (when I go back to speak to them) and thus can't complete the quest. Is the only way to complete it to kill Pacer, or can I not even do that (note I am playing on PS3 and can't use console commands)? - AWanderingFlame 09:48, May 1, 2011

Advancing with console commands - help please[]

Figuring that all the possible "favors" from The King from "G.I. Blues" were getting into the Strip, getting caps and joining Kings, I decided to join Kings - and now, much later, I obviously can't use The King's favor to call of violence against NCR in King's Gambit (which I couldn't even have thought to be connected with The King and his favour from G.I. Blues). Could someone please post console commands here that would enable me to advance with the quest as if I used The King's favor and I'd be heading back to report to to the Ambassador (the assassination option is REALLY bad, and I wouldn't want to take it). Thanks in advance. (82.181.75.48 23:30, October 27, 2010 (UTC))

Jet Stash[]

I wanted to poison Pacer so I went up to his room to find the jet stash, and I couldn't find it anywhere. It has a map marker right where it should be, it just isn't there. I had to add it in with the G.E.C.K., and now I'm going to try to finish the quest.

Edit: The stash is disguised as a carton of cigarettes and is underneath the bed to the left side.

RE Edit: My game glitched, the carton was not in the level until I added in the G.E.C.K. In any event it only allowed me to spike with psycho, but Pacer never went to get a fix, some junkie...

2nd Edit: well, 360 players are screwed. no carton of cigarettes or anything under or around the bed.

  • his stash will not appear until you talk to Rotface (ghoul sitting next to Mick & Ralph's) about rumours (20 in total) which cost 1 cap each, once he spoke about Pacer's drug addiction the stash will be there, same thing for Ralph to write the false note, just listen to all 20 rumours and everything should work 84.196.178.247 20:19, November 3, 2010 (UTC)

Then you have to search in Julie Farkas' wing of the Old Mormon Fort for Pacer file that will reveal Pacer's heart problem. Then stash of jet should be under the bed now. It worked for me (Xbox 360Xbox 360) By Chefren

  • I know he has a drug problem from the rumors, but the carton is not under the bed. :( (ps3) --Deboriole 00:42, November 14, 2010 (UTC)
  • The stash appears fine after talking to Rotface for me (Xbox 360Xbox 360) iPeer(talk) 20:51, November 30, 2010 (UTC)
  • I found the stash, I got the message "you could taint the stash with Psycho if you had some'. I have 17!!!(my med was 60 high enough), but the only options I got were 'leave the jet' or 'take the jet'. 'Take' resulted in 'it would be better to implicate someone Pacer hates'. This 'find someone pacer hates' option isn't mentioned in the article.
  • Just talking to Rotface about Pacer wasn't enough for the stash to become visible. I could only see the carton of cigarettes after I had also gone to the Mormon Fort and found Pacer's file. (PCPC) 50.89.42.14 14:59, July 23, 2011 (UTC)

the glitch happened to me last night and i only have the informaition from rotface so if i get the informaition from the morman fort will i be able to see the carton than or can i never see it and do i have to get hsu again--Corporal grif 22:57, July 27, 2011 (UTC)

Frame the Van Graffs method 2 bug[]

killing him with a plasma/laser weapon when he enters Silver Rush will not work if you have killed the Van Graffs before, even when in a hiding position, when you report to the embassador he will say they suspect the NCR for killing him and thus failing the quest

== KING'S GAMBIT GLITCH == I completed most of the mission: I had used my favor to become a King member, so I decided to take out pacer myself rather than have the NCR do it. I followed him back to his room, then pick-pocketed him and placed a plasma mine. It killed him, and since we were alone, it looked like the Van Graffs did it, and I was not attacked by the other kings. It then said to go back and let Crocker know Pacer had been taken out. I get back to the embassy and try to let him know, but nothing happens. I choose the "I have an update on the Freeside situation" and Crocker responds by wanting to know what happened. That's where it starts to glitch, and exits out of the dialogue. Now I can't finish this damn mission (yet another one of the missions that I have started and have been unable to finish, Oh My Papa and Beyond The Beef for example). What have the people at Bethesda been smoking or taking? Maybe they're all high on Jet themselves. Reiji Takayama--71.107.74.115 08:28, November 7, 2010 (UTC) I have this same problem. Anyone come up with a fix yet? (Xbox)

I myself am having same issue any help with this would be greatly appreciated. WTF Bethesda usually so good at this should have waited for game of the year addition when it comes out that will prob be all better.

Got the same problem, though im playing on pc, seems like a lot of bugs in this game.

(PC) Dammit got this bug aswell and cant finish Kings Gambit although i successfully had him murdered by the Van Graphs, witnessed it happening myself using the forged note from Mitch. I think ill just try to hack it and bypass the quest using the games's console, pretty effing stupid after all the running around and still its buged, stupid crocker, stupid Bethesda

Entering Strip bug?[]

After completing King's Gambit is was lo longer able to enter the strip. I was lvl26 and after killing pacer I attempted to enter the strip and it told me I needed a key. I have discovered ways around this but I'm unsure why this is happening. Obmckenzie 20:55, November 14, 2010 (UTC)

If you killed Pacer before accepting this quest, the only option is to report to Crocker and fail the quest. Not sure if it's a glitch or just the way the quest is programmed - happened to me on Xbox360.

Quest not triggering[]

Playing on the PC. I've long since done the Boomers quest line and become Idolized with them. Unfortunately, the game isn't giving me any dialogue options that will trigger The Kings Gambit. Is there a way I can fix this as with the way it is now, I cannot progress with the NCR questline.

Edit: Found out this was because I'd failed the quest "Don't Tread on the Bear" and was therefore, locked out of NCR quests. The game oddly, failed to tell me this (that I remember anyway). I only realized it when I saw the Don't Tread on the Bear quest as complete when looking through my quest list.

Assassinate Westin in NCR without making it look like a murder[]

Reference to Fallout 2 quest, perhaps? The Unknown User 02:42, January 4, 2011 (UTC)

Julie Farkas involvement[]

I added something to the main page. Snooping around Julie Farkas' wing of the Old Mormon Fort will reveal Pacer's heart problem (he is apparently a patient of hers), no need to pay Rotface.

I checked her office and the filing cabinet was empty. I also exhausted all possible dialog with her, and didn't get anything about Pacer. I wonder if it's a bug. dbbolton (talk) 04:30, July 28, 2014 (UTC)

Entering NCR Embassy Bug[]

Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 It seems I can't enter the NCR Embassy anymore, the game just crashes. I started Birds of Two Feather before going back to Crocker after failing the diplomatic approach (had used my favor to become a King). I didn't kill Pacer when he came by the Silver Rush. I'm stuck now, just trying to find a way to go around this.

  • Advancing the quest doesn't solve it.
  • Neither does killing pacer by spiking his Jet stash
  • Killing Pacer as a Van Graff guard won't fix this either.

It looks like all my save games safe my very first are corrupted. Avoid doing anything fancy during this quest is my advice.

Bethesda + Obsidian is really the worst development combo someone could have ever imagined.

Non-Lethal?[]

Does anyone know what happens if you knock-out Pacer with something non-lethal before NCR soldiers start firing? This is coming from going to Colonel Hsu and then nicely offering more supplies for peace to The King, but Pacer will attack anyway.

Many methods do not work.[]

You can't have Ralph forge a letter from Jean Baptiste, even if you do go back and speak to the ambassador there is no dialogue option for forging a note. Similarly killing Pacer with an energy weapon, grenade, etc will complete the quest objective but also turn the entire school hostile permanently. The only way to complete this quest without the Kings becoming hostile is to spike the jet with psycho. Mictlantecuhtli 09:36, July 22, 2011 (UTC)

Well, it seems you're half right -- sneak into the room, plant plasma mine/..., *boom*, all hostile. However: successfully sneaking back out of the room instead of fighting the now hostile guard turns them friendly again. Cheers. --87.143.154.75 22:25, August 29, 2011 (UTC)

King's going hostile[]

Method: Frame the Van Graff family (working as a guard) The article states that this won't turn the Kings hostile, but it does. Pacer initiates combat via dialogue, and I have killed him using both the VanGraff multiplas and laser rifles. The quest successfully completes every time (framed the VGs, go back to Crocker), yet when I go up the street to the King's School they are hostile. I have tried melting Pacer into a Goo Pile and an Ash Pile (which some say works), yet still hostile.

Method: Frame the Van Graff family (planting energy weapon) This also turned the Kings hostile, though the article says not. I wait until Pacer is asleep, I am successfully hidden, no one else is in the room with the door closed, and I reverse-pickpocket a plasma-grenade on Pacer. He dies and then everyone in the building goes hostile, yet the quest completes successfully saying the VGs were framed.

Method: Spike the jet with Psycho (Requires 60 Medicine and 1 Psycho) This method worked for me, with no hostile Kings. However the articles states, You must also first speak with Ambassador Crocker and tell him your plan, which requires a [50] Medicine check. This is incorrect. As soon as Rotface tells you about Pacer's drug problem and weak heart, the quest option is automatically added. Randutoo (talk) 03:02, June 30, 2013 (UTC)randutoo

Is there a way to add more favors using the console commands? That would be nice.

For note collectors , both Jet notes are obtainable[]

You can get a note directly from Jean. I had assumed it was cut content. Accept the quest, go to Rotface and get the tip about the jet. Inspect the jet box in Pacers room. After that go STRAIGHT back to Crocker and tell him about the Pacer's issue with the Van Graffs. Then go to Jean and this makes the dialogue appear.

You can go to Ralph and collect the other note as well as the medical report. But if you pick those 2 up first, the dialogue for Jean will not appear. The dialogue for Jean also doesn't appear if you are in the middle of Birds of a Feather until you finish that quest.
