Wouldnt one of the possible history points be during the main quest when u talk to the mnny guy in Novac? this opens up other dialogue options

Page needs information. Edit

I'm not getting any conversations with Boone after completing listed tasks, can someone update with a more comprehensive walkthrough of this quest? Powlee 23:30, October 26, 2010 (UTC)

Have you made sure to run through every line of dialogue with him? I "believe", though i'm not certain as i'm still on first play through, that you MUST complete the Back in Your Own Backyard quest to advance another stage with him. It's located east of Novac by the way. If this works for you, please try to report back to i can add it to the article. -EllEzDee 08:18, October 27, 2010 (UTC)

I have done this quest twice...both times without going to it is NOT mandatory. Last playthrough I freed the powdergangers for 2, and freed the NCR prisoners in Nelson for 2, then killing one of them for the cheat/bonus 1. Entered convo with Boone and he said he didn't want to go to Bittersprings, but as soon as I exited convo he came to me and said he was ready to go back. Didn't do any 30 speech check either. 21:38, November 3, 2014 (UTC)

After completing the quest Back in Your Own Backyard I was able to advance in dialog with Bonne. I still could not get further dialog by freeing the slaves from cottenwood cove, but I could get him to tell me what happened to his wife if I dropped the toxic barrels into the cove AND killed the slaves in the process. Either way, I was not able to start his sidequest. Powlee 02:12, October 28, 2010 (UTC)

Also, I did not have the quest an eye for an eye active.Powlee 02:17, October 28, 2010 (UTC)

In terms of triggering the quest, I've been doing an NCR champion game and have done everything in favour of them, with Boone in my party the entire time. I was driving myself mad trying to find out how to trigger the quest, I figured it out as all I needed to do was to go to Cottonwood Cove and clear it out. Worked right away, got the extra dialogue and Boone wants to go to Bitter Springs immediately. This should be added. --Quicksilverk 23:44, October 29, 2010 (UTC) Added a Note on the main page. --Quicksilverk 00:15, October 30, 2010 (UTC)

So if I kill all the legion in cottenwood cove by shooting everyone with boone I get the quest but dropping toxic barrels on the camp will not trigger the quest to start? Is it just a matter of how many legion kills you get with Boone following you?Powlee 16:33, October 30, 2010 (UTC)

I can't confirm if dropping the barrels will not trigger it. I only killed the Legion at the Cove with a rifle. Still I think it's just going to Cottonwood Cove that is the real trigger. Having Boone with you though means that he'll attack the Legion.

I didn't even get additional dialog for dropping the barrels. 02:29, November 2, 2010 (UTC)

I just started this quest. I had, by my calculations, 6 "Boone points". First 2 for saving Nelson hostages, then 2 for wiping out Cottonwood Cove during Left My Heart (sniper kills, not the barrels), final 2 for releasing the Powder Ganger hostages at the Legion Raid Camp during Booted. I spoke with Boone after completing Booted and explored all dialogue options. He spoke relatively at length (for him) about Bitter Springs but did not offer this quest. I then fast travelled to Cottonwood Cove and he initiated the quest immediately upon arrival. Clearly linked with location as well as point standing. (PC version) 19:48, December 9, 2010 (UTC)

In my case, I did recruit Boone early, but he somehow missed either Nelson or the Raid camp when I did them (I believe I had him with me in both cases, but this is too far back to remember or load a saved game and redo that) so he had only 2 points- traveling back to the places didn't 'add' the points. After clearing cottonwood (cleared all but the Centurion alone, then picked up Boone, killed Centurion, didn't push the barrels) so he was still missing 1 point, and I didn't want to head to the Fort quite yet.. I had done the Silus 'peacefully', but going back to McCarran and flat out killing Silus, even tho that quest was already completed, gave him the final point I wanted and allowed the Quest to progress (PC).

Quest ID? Edit

I got carried away doing quests before having Boone as a companion, and have effectively locked myself out of ever getting enough points with him to do this quest. If we could get an ID or a way to force-start it through the console, it'd be very helpful.

Do you have to do these quests with Boone as a current companion in order to get the "points"? I've already done enough for 6-7 points but I didn't have Boone as my companion at the time. --Pibpib 03:26, October 29, 2010 (UTC)
You have to have him with you, and talk to him.
If you're having problems getting the points, or reached a certain point where it's literally impossible to trigger the quest(did all the quests with other party member, for an example), you can do things like resurrect Caesar and kill him again to add 'history points'. If you have boone with you, the points will add up.--BSMaker 03:33, October 29, 2010 (UTC)
Oh, just looked into the quest ID. Going to the console and typing setstage 001349A7 10 should do it, though the previous method is still valid.--BSMaker 04:48, October 29, 2010 (UTC)

Pro-Legion Edit

You can get this quest and still not do much to hurt rep with Caesar's Legion. I took these steps and it worked well. The only catch is that you have to be at least accepted with NCR when Boone is your companion. So if you sided with the Powder gangers at the beginning of the game you may not be able to take this route. Remember that once you take Boone as a companion you should always exhaust all dialog options each step of the way

-Take Boone as companion. -Do quest "Booted" use a stealth boy and sneak in to rescue prisoners. Save when you get near the camp too because sometimes the legion will spot boone and it goes against your rep when he kills members of the legion.

  • Prisoners rescued (+2 points)

-(Accepted with NCR) Go to camp Mccarran and talk to Colonol Hsu about interrogating the prisoner, take every opportunity during interrogation to beat him senseless and make sure in the end to beat him to death. This adds to your Boone rep and helps out the Legion who expect all members to kill themselves rather than be captured.

  • Centurion interrogated and killed (+2 points)

-(trickiest part, save before trying, also be sure to complete "we are legion" because completing this makes you permanently hostile to Dead Sea. Once again use a stealthboy and head to Nelson. Sneak into the camp from the eastern side, if your lucky they'll be an NCR assault coming in providing unintentional distraction, release the three crucified prisoners.

  • NCR uncrucified (+1, quest should trigger).

-Once you have the quest be sure to do it straight away(x-box 360). If you have Boone leave your group once this quest is in your log before you complete it you may trigger a glitch that makes it impossible to trigger the bitter springs dialogue. Killing the legion during this quest hurts you rep with them so bring some stealth boys, a suppressed sniper rifle and some turbo to sneak kill as many legion as possible, it should be noted that in all of boone's endings that include Caesar's victory at the dam he makes the legions life miserable so if your going for the caesar's legion ending you may be better off taking the wrong person for boone to kill in "one for my baby" then telling boone about it so he attacks you and you can kill him. That way he doesn't end up murdering the legion in the end of the game dialogue. (bonus: If you kill Boone during "One for my Baby" Mr. New Vegas will report that bitter springs was overrun by legion since you automatically fail "so I forgot to remember to forget" (x-box 360

No joke this guy owns... There is no better companion if you are NCR Bio Enhancment 411 14:15, October 28, 2010 (UTC)

  • I’ll admit he’s good, but Cass will give him a run for his money as well if you give her decent armor and either a modded hunting shotgun or Dinner Bell.
  • It may depend a little bit on a player's style, I suppose. But Boone is definitely my preference. Combine Boone's spotting and sniping with ED-E's enhanced sensors, and I can keep enemies right where I want them: far, far away.

Advance in conversation each time. Edit

Do you really have to? I only looked this quest up the other day, and noticed I had already done 2 of the things on the list without talking to Boone after them. Then I did the "Booted" quest and talked to him, then cleared out Cottonwood Cove and talked to him and I got it. So do you really have to talk to him after each one? (I also love Boone too)-- 18:57, November 3, 2010 (UTC)

Note added Edit

I added a note about completing the three Bitter Springs quests prior to this one. It was noted on the pages for those quests but it really belongs on this one seeing as people (like me) wont be looking at those pages while doing this quest and they (me) will get screwed out of those ones.ReapTheChaos 16:19, November 6, 2010 (UTC)

I actually just did the quest and neither of those ncr officers died on me, I had already done all 3 of those missions though. 13:01, December 1, 2010 (UTC)

If you missed Boone's Triggers Edit

If you are still missing points and you are at a point where it is impossible to go back and get them there is an addon that allows an alternative method to get them at

I have that problem but I have an Xbox 360.

Same here, got the Exs bawks, and it sucks being unable to mod :(

Killing Manny Vargas prior to conversation about Bitter Springs Edit

I killed Vargas after reading the note on his computer and never talked to him about Bitter Springs. If I'm reading this correctly that locks me out of any chance of doing Boone's side quest, correct? If that's the case maybe we should bold that in the wiki or something.

Why did ya kill him? Isn't he a neutral/good guy? If pertaining to "One For My Baby, wasn't it Jeannie May Crawford that sold off Carla?

You can still do the quest if you talk to Sergeant Bitter-Root at Camp Mcarran.

Skip? Edit

Is it possible to bypass gaining history with boone by simply traveling to bitter springs with him? Kevinsux909 06:48, December 25, 2010 (UTC)

Answer: unfortunately no. If your doing the house, yes man, or ncr versions of the game it is pretty easy to get the history points(just killing Caesar and the rest of the legion at the fort might do it) but if your doing the legion ending it can be tricky, the pro-legion version above is all you can do. going to bitter springs without the history points does nothing.

confronting benny Edit

   * Confronting Benny at the beginning of Ring-a-Ding-Ding.
   * After the mission 'Ring-a-Ding-Ding' if you kill 'Benny'.

how many history points can you get there?

No history points earned Edit

I recruited Boone quite late into the game, when I'd already done almost everything that would earn history points. I only did one thing that would while he was my companion - clearing Cottonwood Cove. Immediately afterwards, I was able to talk to him about Bitter Springs and start his quest. I'm guessing either you don't need five history points anymore or the patch added something so that you earn the points even before you meet him. Does anyone know what this is about?

Is Cottonwood Cove essential? because I was sure I already had 5 points but he still wouldn't talk to me until i cleared it

I did it without getting five points either. I rescued the hostages in Nelson (+2), went down to Searchlight and started Eye for an Eye, went to Cottonwood Cove and eliminated the legion (+2), rescued the enslaved family (Wethers?), then dumped the toxic barrels into the cover for the hell of it. Was able to start the quest before finishing Eye for an Eye.--Rumblepen (talk) 06:52, October 22, 2014 (UTC)

How can you tell how many history points earned? Edit

Is it possible to check how many history points you've earned? I would assume through the console somehow... ZappaFan 16:54, February 16, 2011 (UTC)ZappaFan

DUH, right after I ask this I found the info was already on the quest page but I missed it somehow...

To determine your current 'history points' with Boone, you may type into the console show "96BCD".nOpenness ZappaFan 17:00, February 16, 2011 (UTC)ZappaFan

No Legion Repution Loss Edit

It is possible to complete Boone's quest without losing any repution with the Legion ... To earn Boone's 5 "points" ... ensure you only sneak kill legonaires where required ... during final Bitter Spings showdown, remain hidden and let Boone and ED-E (or Rex) do all the heavy lifting, you can also summon an NCR Ranger with the Emergency Radio to help out... if you park ED-E (with weapons upgrade) at entrance to Khan Grave yard, he'll kill most of the legion in the third and final wave by himself ...--TuskNB 12:27, February 25, 2011 (UTC)

show "96BCD".nOpenness Edit

When i type this in i get unknown variable nOpenness?

Any suggestions - i've played through the game twice with no boone automatic trigger,

Thanks in advance,

In the latest/current patch, Boone is now 96bce, not 96bcd.

That said, I can't get the syntax right, either, and it refuses to accept any variant of " and < around his ID - I tried <96BCE> on the grounds that older console command docs suggest using it as an ID wrapper. No go.

Use the NVSE function printc: printc "%.5f" "96BCD".nOpenness Nemini (talk) 03:04, August 9, 2012 (UTC)

2 points, or 5? Edit

I recall this quest needing 5 "history" points before. Was this changed in a patch, or just vandals on the page? "the player must accumulate two "history" points with Boone"--Jolipinator 18:25, March 15, 2011 (UTC)

Looks like somebody edited it from "five" to "two" with no other changes "Revision as of 22:30, March 12, 2011 by". I just did this quest a couple weeks before the last patch and it was five points for sure. --ZappaFan 18:46, March 15, 2011 (UTC)

Which ending to this quest makes boone vengefull and which one makes him forgive himself? Edit

both answers seem ok. if u pick the "use the experience to have a better future" boone says i guess i should spend my tme hunting legionaries and gets armour the makes him repentent.

but if u pick the one where it says "war is war, get over it" he seems to understand that it wasnt his fault but gets armour that makes him look bloodthirsty. i want to have an ending where boone is happy but not sure which answer is the correct one to use --AwesomeGordo 23:59, April 23, 2011 (UTC)

Choose the first option, goes like "Regret can make you stronger" or something. This one makes him repentant, whereas the other option makes him angrier and unforgiving. Both armors do the same thing, it's just his personality that changes. --Darth Dan 012 21:49, April 30, 2011 (UTC)

Vulpes Inulcta Edit

I killed Vulpes Inulcta when I first met him at Nipton. Will this cause my game to crash? Can I still complete I Forgot to Remember to Forget? --Darth Dan 012 20:50, April 29, 2011 (UTC)

It might even crash if you didn't kill him, that's what was happening to me. Don't know if it was patched, though.IPodged 23:45, April 29, 2011 (UTC)
I killed him in Nipton as well, but I didn't get any crash. 08:25, July 8, 2011 (UTC)

Xbox? Edit

I know I killed Caesar with him and i took out Cottonwood Cove with him, but I had him wait at Ranger Station Delta. So i'm wondering if I still get history points for doing that because he was my companion at the time he was just waiting. Keep in mind i'm doing this on xbox so I have no way to tell or not with commands.I know you can get an extra point from killing Silus and I know you can kill him after you did the interrogation but I have no idea how to actually kill Silus. Can someone get back to me on this, I really don't want Boone's ending to be him going ape shit and killing himself.

Dismissing Boone during this quest Edit

If you have already started the quest I Forgot to Remember to Forget, and you dismiss Boone as a Companion, you will fail the quest.

I had started this quest and gotten as far as Coyote Tail Ridge when I realized that killing the Legionnaires at Bitter Springs would probably put a damper on my visit to Caesar for the main quest line. My Sneak skill was low, so I didn't think I could get away with sneaking to avoid negative rep with the Legion.

Then I realized that I couldn't take Boone to Legion territory because he would slaughter every Legionnaire in sight. So I dismissed him and immediately got a Quest Failed.

I solved this by having him wait at Ranger Station Echo while I completed the main quest. 12:42, July 23, 2011 (UTC)

4 Points? Or are there More? Edit

I just got this Quest by only Wiping out Cottonwood Cove and Rescuing the Hostages for the NCR, I never reached McCarran, Killed Vulpes, Ceaser or did Booted. However I did do Restoring Hope in between, could this also be a point worth for Boone's Quest? (Xbox 360)

How many of these points do I need for Boones quest to activate?

Boone's Response Dialogue Edit

Can someone get the list of dialogue responses Boone says after a history point is earned and post them here? Not the new dialogue you get with him, the line he says right after getting a history point. I'm not sure if I'm earning one after killing Silus, since he doesn't say anything, and there's only one new conversation line.--Jolipinator 10:14, October 14, 2011 (UTC)

I just ran around McCarran doing a number of missions, and from it figured you don't always get new opening dialog after earning one (or even two) history points with Boone. Sometimes he will make a comment outside of dialog, but not always. Other times you will have to initiate conversation to hear his thoughts on the matter. Sometimes it's both, sometimes it's neither.

So here's a working list from what I recall offhand, written to the best of my ability. Glitches happen though, and it's possible I've missed something, so if anyone can make corrections here I welcome them to do so.

Booted -- Commentary: "They got what was coming to them..."; Dialog Opens: "Pisses me off Legion slavers can operate on NCR turf like that..." Back in Your Own Backyard -- Commentary occurs, is dependent on how you deal with the crucified soldiers. I Put a Spell On You -- No commentary following death of Curtis or defusing the monorail bomb; No new dialog opening. Killing Vulpes -- No commentary, no new dialog opening. Killing Caesar -- Commentary: "Thumbs down, you son of a bitch!"; Dialog Opens (rather, it includes): "This may not stop the Legion. Might not even slow them down." Searchlight/Cottonwood -- No commentary, no new dialog opener.

Incorrect history points? [I put a a Spell on You] Edit

I've just gone through the 'I Put a Spell on You' quest two times and have received 1 history point for killing the spy but I have not received history points for defusing the bomb (tried defusing with both explosives/science check and the activation code looted off of the spy).

Incorrect information on the page? Or did they change it with the patch?

  • Nope it must be a glitch. Killing the spy is most notably one of Boone's companion quest moments.
  • If cheating is your thing to get a challenge easily done. The Console command "Resurrect" can be repeatedly used to kill Legion officers.

I have played these games so many times.. I swear I only cheat to work out bugs or uncover the most hidden bits.

SaintPain TinySaintPainThat was broke afore I got here." 06:08, December 19, 2012 (UTC)

spy and monorail bomb count for 1 point Edit

information on main page about 1 point for killing the spy and 1 point for disarming bomb (2 in total) seems to be wrong. There is only 1 point and that is for killing the spy. This can be gained even if he is not directly killed since on turning quest he commits suicide gaining 1 point for his death and not for diffusing the bomb.

set "96BCD".nOpenness to 5 Edit

I can't trigger the quest using "set "96BCD".nOpenness to 5" command. It doesn't work, no matter what I do... :/

NCR rep bug? Edit

Upon completion my NCR rep goes from "Idolized" to "Accepted" I still get a notification of gained reputation.

UPDATE: Might have something to do with faction armor because I was wearing NCR armor. Redoing the quest wearing non-faction armor solved the problem.

Show History Via Console Edit

I cant get the .nOpeness thing to work to show his history points or to set them. What exactly do I need to type to check it? Skyte100 (talk) 18:40, May 27, 2013 (UTC)

Boone doesnt follow me Edit

i did the nelson quest, rescued the powder gangers and cleard cottonwood cove. And when i talk to him about bitter springs he didnt want to go, then i fast traveld to mccarren, then he spoke to me and wanted to go to bitter springs and then he stopped following me, I dont have a quest, I can fast travel with him but he just dont want to follow me

Story point for disarming monorail Edit

I tried it about 10 times, checking with show "96BCD".nopenness - there's no history point for this action. I also searched the internet for this one and found about a dozen negative responses to this point with exactly none positive, aside from one guy that confuses curtis with silus and talks about total 2 points in McCaran. So I'm deleting this line from the article not to fool anybody else. 19:34, March 18, 2014 (UTC)

Boone after the quest Edit

Does the dialogue choice at the end have any effect on Boone other than just which armor he ends up wearing? (ex:behavior, attributes, speech options, etc.) Noobyorkcity (talk) 05:37, November 3, 2014 (UTC)

Sure that bomb defusing gives history points? Edit

I killed the spy, I defused the bomb, I completed the Quest "Booted" and I killed Silus with C4 after the interrogation and all with Boone as an active companion. After I checked the history points via the console I found out that I just have 4 instead of the 5 I should have. Sure, that defusing the bomb gives a point? It seems like other people have that problem, too (see the talk page). (The Alpha Falcon (talk) 22:09, July 31, 2015 (UTC))

It is noted in the Bugs section that after patch there is no longer an additional history point for disarming the monorail bomb.
I have added a note on the entry to highlight this change as most players will have that patch installed and it has caused some confusion. After checking it a number of times, the history point is only awarded on the death of Curtis during the I Put a Spell on You quest. Either by killing him before completing the quest, or on completion as he dies due to his suicide at that point. I also edited the Bugs entry to more accurately reflect how it works after the patch. Boone commenting on eliminating Legion in Cottonwood Cove? Edit

The article says:

After eradicating the Legion at Cottonwood Cove, Boone would be rather pleased to know the camp where his wife and unborn child was being sold and put out of her misery was wiped out and wish that something like this would happen more often.
I've tried killing every legionnaire by myself, while Boone waited outside Cottonwood Cove, tried killing them while he was following me, killed them with guns, killed them by irradiating the camp etc., yet this alleged dialogue does not appear. All he says is "Wish there was more of them. I wasn't done yet." once the last enemy is killed or the barrels are dropped down. Can someone confirm such a dialogue even exists in game, and if so, what has to be done to trigger it? Otherwise, I suggest removing this misleading paragraph from the article. --C0Rb3N (talk) 15:02, September 2, 2015 (UTC)
