One of the fens phantoms victims had a brahmin skull for a head suggesting this may have been after the war.
Did the detective ever actually find the lair?[]
The fact that the tapes are still sitting there for the Sole Survivor to find would to me seem to suggest that the killer laid out a path for the detective, who however never followed it. Either the detective outsmarted the killer, or just never found the lair, leaving the killer to wait there in vain. In particular, contrary to what the article states, the last ape would strike me as just the killer counting his chicken before they hatch, gloating at the detective he's convinced he will ensnare.
