Receiving & Failing Quest at Once[]

When I completed The House Always Wins III I automatically completed IV as I had already resolved the Omerta quest before causing me to automatically get Don't Tread on the Bear! without having any chance to stop it. I'm not sure if this is considered a bug or not but it doesn't seem quite right. Ramira 18:18, November 8, 2010 (UTC)

I have the same issue. After completing The House Always Wins III (alliance with Boomers) Mr. House states "Your next assignment would have been to investigate the Omertas, but you managed to foil their scheme before I could put you do the task." without a chance to exit the conversation, thus automatically completing The House Always Wins IV. As such, you both receive and fail Don't Tread on the Bear! in the same conversation, with no chance to stop after receiving it.

So, I wouldn't necessarily call it a bug, but more an oversight in the conversation options with Mr. House. The conditions for THAW III & IV are also requirements in the NCR quest line. Going to Mr. House after doing said quests for the NCR as well as having completed THAW II, talking to Mr. House has the above result, which I think is rather unfair. Now, it DOES make sense that Mr. House would be aware of your completing the Omertas quest, seeing as he's got eyes & ears everywhere in The Strip, therefore automatically completing THAW IV. An extra point, 'cause I wanted to figure out how. You can complete THAW III & receive Don't Tread on the Bear! with the following console commands: setstage 00147887 100 set "00116b58".boomerquest to 3

The first sets the stage as if you had told him you have Boomer support, marking the quest as complete in your Pip-Boy The second is the variable checked by various scripts to see that the quest is complete - Mr. House's dialogue as well as Don't Tread on the Bear! & Beware the Wrath of Caesar! removal[]

Is it possible to get rid of this quest? And continue Mr. House storyline without breaking NCR relations?

I don't think the quest goes away until you've gotten far enough along in the main quest. Not sure about breaking NCR relations though, I'm curious as well. --Brent Andrew DeBoard 02:47, November 17, 2010 (UTC)

Locking reputation at Neutral?[]

I completed The House Always Wins, III as well as Wild Card: Side Bets, and after doing such my reputation toward the NCR dropped from Idolized to Neutral. I'm currently working to solve the Omertas problem for the NCR ambassador, but if I complete the quest will it complete both For The Republic, Part 2 as well as The House Always Wins, IV? And does that count toward working with Yes Man? Just a little concerned, but we'll see how it goes. --Brent Andrew DeBoard 02:46, November 17, 2010 (UTC)

How did this turn out for you? I am i the same situation. I went up to House Always Wins III and stopped before speaking with the Omerta secretary when I got Don't Tread on Me. I decided to switch to the NCR path but when I got the NCR mission to speak with the Omertas, I got closed out of the NCR. I am hoping if I kill House before proceeding with the NCR Omerta quest, then it will clear the way. Still... I lost a good 5 hours of gameplay. Medeasin 00:19, June 19, 2011 (UTC)

unplayable?[]

I have not completed the omerta's quest lines, but I do have them open. When I got the quest to investigate them (which seemed reasonable), I got the message about not working with mr. house. So, of course, the first thing I did was go talk with the NCR ambassador.

After talking with him a bit (and getting some of what looked like repeat dialog, but maybe that was from a session that crashed) I accepted a quest from him to go negotiate with the kings about Pacer. While leaving his office, I got jumped by an NCR MP that went hostile to me (and all NCRs went hostile). So I ran out of the office and hid behind some securitrons (and they ignored me). So I ran to another strip zone and the securitrons helped the NCR kill me.

Fun, fun, fun...

Quest completed without the game telling me[]

With my first character, I had much of Mr House's questline complete without this quest failing. The main way to fail it seemed to be to do quests for Yes Man.

I seem to recall failing it made me neutral to the NCR or at the very least, the game told me the NCR would no longer accept my help.

Doing quests for Mr House also made me vilified to the Legion.

With my second character, I talked to Yes Man about groups he can ignore and watched for the note that I'd failed this quest so I could reload if that happened. It didn't come or at least, I don't remember seeing it.

My Reputation with the NCR stayed at Idolized.

Later on, I was unable to do more NCR quests and couldn't figure out why. It wasn't until I saw this quest as completed in my quest list that I realized what had happened.

What's also weird is that despite doing quests against the Legion after meeting with them, I never gained a vilified standing. I was 'Soft-hearted Devil' through to the end.

Could this be some sort of glitch with the latest version of the game?

-Edit-

After reading the below post, I checked in game with both characters and made a discovery.

The first character had the Yesman version of "Don't Tread on the Bear". This was why I was able to stop with Yesman and continue with Mr House.

As an experiment, I went back to a savefile with this character which was close to the end of the game.

I tried killing Mr. House at the last minute (i.e., when his questline told me to tell him when I'm ready to fight the final battle) and going with Yesman even to the final battle. Oddly, Don't Tread on the Bear didn't progress further and was still 'active'. It didn't get to the point of failing it and saying the NCR will no longer accept my help.

It was strange because I now think I remember killing Mr. House earlier and the quest failing as soon as I installed Yes Man on Mr. House's mainframe. I'd reverted to an earlier save after doing that as I didn't want to have the NCR not wanting my help and I felt bad about killing Mr. House.

My Second character unfortunately had the Mr. House version of "Don't Tread on the Bear". As a result of misremembering what point in Yes Man's quest is the point of no return if you have the Yes Man version, I was looking for the quest to trigger when talking to Yesman about what tribes to ignore. Unfortunately, it seems as though I missed the warning about not working with Mr. House and doing his quests triggered it. Killing Mr. House would not "untrigger" it and even with Mr. House dead, the NCR still would not accept further help from me.

It's possible to avoid failing this quest.[]

Here's how I did it: I completed 'The House Always Wins, III', because I planned on letting Mr. House go all the way, before stabbing him in the back at the very last moment. I was already working with Yes Man, and already had Wild Card. But I left deactivating House's neural link until very late on. What happened is, of course, that The House Always Wins (not) failed, and I continued with Wild Card. But because I already had the Mr. House version of Don't Tread on the Bear, it didn't update to Yes Man. Sooo... despite continuing with Wild Card, I never failed that. I was actually able to do all NCR-related stuff in the game AND be independent at the end. Neat, eh? (77.107.172.208 08:06, November 30, 2010 (UTC))

"Unmarked" quest?[]

I know it's not a typical quest, but it appears as a quest in the Pip-Boy. I thought that was the only important difference between "marked" and "unmarked" quests. I won't change it now just in case the infamy quests are considered unmarked here for some stupid reason.71.63.185.34 05:21, January 3, 2011 (UTC)

Failure for the Legion?[]

The page mentions when this quest typically fails for players helping House or Yes Man, but what about the Legion?

I failed this quest just after the White Glove Society portion of Render Unto Caesar. Is that true for anyone else?

Did Not Fail quest despite showing up[]

When I first got New Vegas and learned of the different paths I could take for the end game. I naturally saved prior to each path I was going to take (Legion, NCR, House, Yes Man) During my NCR run I had done everything possible in regards to quest and reputation is concerned. While I was on the NCR path I did some side quest and when the point marker would update to tell me to go tell Yes Man, I did. After completing Wildcard: Side Bets I got the quest "Don't Tread on the Bear". Ignoring it I continued with my NCR path and finished. I then did House next with the save I was using for NCR that had Side Bets completed. I did all of the things House asked me. However, I never loss reputation status with the NCR(Idolized) throughout the entire run even at the end. The quest never failed and no NCR Rangers where ever hostile to me, even the Remnants did not get hostile towards me unlike my Yes Man run.

I don't know if it had to do with the fact that I had the quest added for Yes Man prior to doing quests for House or if its a bug. Either way I'm glad

NCR Territory?[]

In the legion version of the quest it says you will be shot on site in NCR territory.Does NCR territory include the strip? PSN Dusty_Hammer, 23 june 2011

As you've probably found out by now no.

Clarification[]

Does "will no longer accept your help" only include the NCR quests in the main quest line? Or does this include all quests involved with NCR?

In my experience, you can still complete any NCR-related side quest but not one from main NCR questline(Things That Go Boom,King's Gambit,For The Republic pt2 and Eureka!) unless you are villified by them.

Further Clarification?[]

Regarding this sentence: "The first three actions are, obviously, the result of aiding an opposing faction." Does "aiding" refer strictly to completing those factions' main quests, or simply gaining Fame with them? For example, if i am able to gain Legion Fame without gaining NCR infamy or completing any Main Quests, will it still fail this quest?

Removal but not failing[]

How can I remove this quest without failing it can I get rid of it if the NCR relized I won't betray them and I get to idolized reputation or is this quest permanent.

Using console commands to repair relations?[]

So, like some others, I fixed the situation with the Omertas to get the Pimp Boy 3 Billion. House auto-completed THAW IV, and I lost any ability to continue working with the NCR towards the endgame. Is there a way to re-initiate this quest and PASS it, so that I can save later on? I want to make each 'run' for the factions' endgame quests, but I don't want to have to start from such an early point.

Could I just use a command to trigger an NCR quest such as "For the Republic"? After I legitimately complete it, how would I continue now that Ambassador Crocker is gone?

There is probably no possible way to do this
Possible? It probably is possible. But it would require a lot more than a single console command. First you'd have to respawn Crocker and Moore, then you'd have to track down, and change the quest/actor variables that may have been changed by failing it, and then - you'd be able to get Crocker's quests. However, if you only wanted to get the NCR's ending, and didn't care about doing the quests for them, there is another way. As long as you're not hostile with the NCR, at any time once the "end game" starts (i.e. you accept the prompt to begin the battle at Hoover Dam), just use the console command player.moveto with General Oliver's id. After a couple of debug lines in his dialogue - he'll start the same dialogue he'd have once you got the quest to report to him. From then on out, you'll be locked to fighting with the NCR. I discovered this by accident, after already getting the quest to report to the Legate to start the Legion's side. Dulogo Digital Utopia (talk) 02:19, August 10, 2014 (UTC)

I wanna move this page back to it's original URL[]

The current link to this page is "Don%27t_Tread_on_the_Bear!" with an exclamation mark (!) at the end. It's normally bad practice to include exclamation marks (!) and pound signs (#) in URLs because not every website treats the links the same. Case in point, if you copy/paste the URL to this page onto Reddit, Reddit will automatically ignore the exclamation mark and send you to the old wiki page instead (Don%27t_Tread_on_the_Bear). You have to explicitly select the Link option when adding the URL to make sure it saves the exclamation mark when you post the link on that website.

So in the interest of compatibility and adherence to website conventions, I wanna move this page back to it's old URL that didn't have the exclamation mark and leave this page as a redirect to the other one. I wanted to leave this discussion here if there were any disagreements before making such a big move.

Reddit doesn't determine our page names, the actual quest names do. Great Mara (talk) 00:23, December 6, 2019 (UTC)
I don't mean to say that "we must obey Reddit", but rather, that website development standards across the world avoid those symbols because they're normally used for other reasons besides linking (different Javascript frameworks will use the symbols for different reasons on their own websites, but in general, they're used for website page creation and editing through Javascript), and will likely get ignored or removed when posting to other websites. Reddit is just one example of this that shows how a regular person would have trouble linking to this page because of the aforementioned problem, leading to unnecessary confusion for both the person posting the link and the people clicking on the link. --WarMachineDD7 (talk) 22:28, December 6, 2019 (UTC)
