Dogmeat is actually 90% inspired from the movie "A boy and his dog" starring Don Johnson, further based on a sci-fi novel. The only 10% connection to Mad Max whatsoever is the Jacket. Most of the game is inspired by the aforementioned movie, including the Corvega vehicle found in Fallout 2, the vaults (ok there's also a Cuban Rocket Crysis influence here too, as well as the propaganda of that time), the especially black humor, the mutants (screamers) and also robots ( "The Michaels" from A boy and his dog). There was even a Junktown type place in the movie ABAHD.

Check out the dog in "A Boy and his Dog" and then take a look at the dog in "The Road Warrior". The dog in Fallout 3 is pretty much the spitting image of the one Max has with him for most of the movie. I can't speak for the rest of the game series though. 68.49.115.157 05:59, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
In A Boy and His Dog, the main character refers to his dog as "Dogmeat" not 5 minutes in. And the main character is named Vic. It looks like the Mad Max dog, but it's based on ABAHD. JohnnyMrNinja 13:50, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Has anyone actually managed to make Dogmeat bark lasers with the Wazer Wifle equipped? I have tried both the paralizing palm and making him quest essential then putting him unsconscious and placing items in his possesion (this actually produces negative karma for a reason) but no results yet. He does have an infinite weight carry capacity, but has yet to use an item he now posseses :)

IMMA FIWING MAH WAZER! BBWWWWWWAAAAAWWWWWGGGGHHH!!! But no seriously, its a hoax.--Rylasasin2008 08:23, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

FO3 Dogmeat is a separate article[]

I kind of think we should modify the template to remove the appearance in FO3 from this article. My understanding is that the FO3 Dogmeat is an homage to FO1 Dogmeat, a separate character rather than one character. After all, this Wiki already has a separate article for FO3 Dogmeat. Because of this, I'm going to change it with an explanation pointing to this talk page, in case there's some disagreement Tour86rocker 01:12, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Yes, according to the devs, the FO3 Dogmeat is a descendant of the FO1 Dogmeat. Ausir 01:14, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Looks like we have a cross-editing thing going on, Ausir. Question: does the template have a field for familial relations? (Battlestar Wiki comes to mind) We could use a 'family' field in the template to express such relations between characters. I think it would be a more satisfying way to express the difference between the two Dogmeats by saying that one "sired" the other. Other uses for a 'family' field: Lone Wanderer and James, Jonny and Balthas, maybe even the Original Vault Dweller and the Chosen One (who refers to the VD as his/her "grandsire") Tour86rocker 01:19, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

The infobox now has a "Family" field. Ausir 01:49, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Re-edited the entire page.[]

Mostly what I did was fix grammar and move a few things from here to there. I did correct one thing about the movie "A Boy and his Dog."

Main point I've been asked about is the "Mad Max" references. I moved and compiled them all down in the "trivia" section because I figure whoever wants to read this is probably trying to complete the game quest initially and doesn't need or want to know the references initially.

And as far as to the reference of "A Boy and his Dog," Vic does refer to that dog as "Dogmeat," however the dog's true name is "Blood." The dog in the movie was a Komondore, which is obviously not the breed of Dogmeat in the Fallout series. Nor does he speak to you "telepathically." I believe if there is a reference to it, it's vague. It's obvious that the designers were thinking of "The Road Warrior."

In this article [[1]], Tim Cain specifically mentions that Dogmeat was modeled after Mad Max's dog in the movie The Road Warrior.

This article was featured on The Escapist[]

Kudos to everyone who helped edit this page. It's obvious The Escapist used this as a reference for their article. Read it here. [[2]]  :) --Killchain 04:31, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Dogmeat's origins[]

The main page says the original Dogmeat can be considered an homage to the dog in "The Road Warrior" (Mad Max 2), which was released in 1981. It is my opinion that Dogmeat is actually an homage to the telepathic dog named "Blood" from "A Boy and His Dog" (1975), which is directly based on the yet earlier (1969) science-fiction short by Harlan Ellison. As others have noted about the film, Vic calls his dog "Dogmeat" early on, even though his name is Blood.

The Fallout Universe seems to be based much more on "A Boy and His Dog" than "Mad Max 2". The only connection to the Mad Max franchise seems to be the breed of dog.

Unrelated to Dogmeat's origins, Blood mentions that he "gets such a kick out of calling him [Vic, main character] Albert". Notice the similarity in Harold's dialog when he mentions he gets a kick out of calling Bob "Herbert"? Just funny to me..

How did he live for 200 years?[]

Fallout 2 takes place 200 years after Fallout, so how is Dogmeat still alive?--Rnnlmb 20:31, January 5, 2011 (UTC)

Fallout 3 takes place 200 years after. Fallout 2 is much earlier. And, the appearance in Fallout 2 is an Easter egg - not meant to be taken too seriously.--Gothemasticator 00:19, January 6, 2011 (UTC)
Hi, I just wanted to say that dogmeat from fallout and dogmeat from fallout II should have different articles or an edit should be made to this article stating clearly that dogmeat from fallout 2 is another dog and not the one from fallout 1, I don't know the official statement about this matter but we all know that the original dog died to a forcefield...--190.174.152.170 20:10, November 24, 2011 (UTC)

The Dogmeat in 2 is not canon, I do believe. As was mentioned, he is an easter egg along with all the other people in the Café of Broken Dreams. The Dogmeat in 3 is an descendant of Dogmeat from one, but not the same animal.

What if they are the same?[]

What if this Dogmeat is in fact the same Dogmeat from Fallout 3? What if Dogmeat is the first example of a canine ghoul of sorts? 173.218.137.185 04:38, July 25, 2012 (UTC)

Dogmeat died in an freak accident with a forcefield at the Mariposa Military Base, made canon by the Vault Dweller's memoirs. Also, if I remember correctly there is a statement by a FO3 dev that Dogmeat from 3 is an descendant of the original Dogmeat which accounts for the minor changes in appearance. So sometime before Dogmeat died in Mariposa, probably before he met the Vault Dweller, he sired the ancestor to the FO3 Dogmeat, which continued the lineage to the second canine we all know and love. 200 years had passed to my knowledge so who knows how much of % of Dogmeat blood is actually in the newer mutt. Given an admittedly uneducated average of every 10 years the next canine is born, and the amount of Dogmeat blood is halved, it makes for about an 0.000095% of Dogmeat's original blood. (200/10=20, so divide 100% by half twenty times.) There is probably some fanfic somewhere that Dogmeat did not in fact, die, and somehow did become immortal or was ghoulified into the next Dogmeat, but it's a work of fiction. Believe what you want. (BTW, I pretty much ignored the aforementioned memoirs lorewise, because I never took a companion. Therefore Dogmeat is still on that doorstep and whoever the Ian is that was mentioned did not die from a flamethrower.) Tarkastio (talk) 04:20, January 14, 2013 (UTC)
