Anybody have Butch's quotes?--Thq95 05:56, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

I just hired Butch so i'll try to put up his quotes as i hear them.Leea 23:08, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

I have an entire page dedicated to his dialogue, I'll throw some more up. And sorry about "Tunnel Snakes Rule!" getting removed, that wasn't my intention--a terrible copy/paste move on my part.
PS: Do we want ALL of his dialogue? 83 Lines and counting. -- MB83 15:17, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

There is still that "cannot jump" notice in every follower's description. Is this up to date? In my current (PC) version, however, they follow me pretty well down most drops, the least of which are on rocky terrain. 131.188.120.74 12:45, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Stats

Could we get someone with a PC version to volunteer to put up his stats like we have for Fawkes and Star Paladin Cross? I'd do it myself but I'm on PS3.76.103.182.3 10:36, 14 December 2008 (UTC) Grav

Done. –RpehTCE 11:30, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
There's an external link at the Fallout 3 companions page that has all the stats for the companions. http://www.nma-fallout.com/content.php?page=fo3-npc --DarkJeff 11:43, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

I have checked the stats after you hire him at level 20. They are different from the one posted on that page. I assume the stats on that page are his base stats w/o level scale. But feel free to verify, specially using a low level character. --Voidvector 15:35, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Could someone please shed some light on why butch leveling his science skill is a good idea? It's not like you can tell him to hack terminals for you... can he?

That's why he's a hairdresser, sorry butch, I mean barber.
Kidding, his science skill is useless to you. Most NPCs get 3 tag skills that max out eventually, clearly he didn't pick the right ones on his GOAT.
Maybe Bethseda was toying with the idea that companions would be able to hack terminals if asked? It would make the game a bit more like Fallout:Tactics in that regard, letting you put together a team instead of needing to be a Jack of All yourself.--206.72.84.130 14:53, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
Even if that was true, the exam-copying Butch and 100 Science do not go well together. Lockpick, rather, but that is of no use as well. I guess it's just because everyone gets three tags, but he simply isn't good at anything but brawling. 131.188.120.74 12:45, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Equipment Effect Stacking Exploit

EDIT: I wrote up a description on how to use this exploit on the Fallout 3 followers article. Hopefully it's clear. (not tested on Butch DeLoria) Dcruze 20:26, 8 February 2009 (UTC) --58.106.156.113 10:10, 29 June 2009 (UTC)well..tunnel snakes are just the bunch of young boys just before becoming adults so yeah "show you a real tunnel snake" or "something to put in your mouth" would be just a reference of fu*king her, not that they actually love her.. those quotes made me laugh, really.

Useless?

So. I convinced the people to stay in the vault. And he appeared in Muddy whatever. But he won't talk to me. I wanted to make him my companion because dogmeat sucks ass and I think he's better than RL-3 since I'm level 20. And I need his unique knife too. But since he won't talk to me the only way I can get his blade is to kill him. Can I do anything to get him to talk or is he useless and I have to kill him.

Try pickpocketing Butch's knife but stick with RL-3 as a follower. His plasma gun and flamethrower are far more powerful than Butch's switchblade and 10mm pistol. He can also take more of a beating than Butch and I think he can carry more as well. 115.64.118.162 15:28, September 10, 2009 (UTC)

Wrong. Butch is better.

Biased?

Is it just me, or is the article starting to appear biased. Because a lot of the information on there is more supportive of say, a hate group. I'm thinking it should represent Butch DeLoria, and not anyone's personal opinions on how much he sucks, or otherwise. All the articles should remain neutral, actually.

How can this be fixed without someone getting upset?

i dont think it can...but thats the thing with wikis...but yeah i vote it should be neutral... The biased people are retarded, Butch is really good, you just need to use him to notice it, most idiots just say he sucks because he has a 10mm without even getting him.

I almost didn't use him because everyone said he sucked, but I was roleplaying a character and he was the only follower who would make sense. So I got him but swore that if he died right away he stayed dead. I gotta say, he's a lot of fun to have around and he does well in fire fights if you watch his back. It does make me wonder how many people "tested him out" with the intent of making him look bad or didn't use him at all. Plus his comments always make me laugh. He's not terrific in a fight but he's not terrible either. Heck, he once did a "kill steal" on a Behemoth... and I was still low level and really needed that exp. Punched him in the face over the Behemoth incident, lol. Snakewyvern 06:41, January 19, 2010 (UTC)

Keep in mind that Broken Steel changes the followers so they're almost unkillable. If you're just trying Butch now, he's considerably more resiliant.

Whoops

I killed him on the vault because i though i was never going to see him again... one of my much wrong decisions in this game, i think ill need to play it again... anyway, if you kill him on the vault, will he appear for some kind of glitch? DrMGinius 20:10, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

I killed Butch upon my return to Vault 101 in the "Trouble on the Homefront" quest, and a little while after when I was hanging around Rivet City, went into the Muddy Rudder, and I saw Butch's dead body in the bar the same way it looked when I killed him in Vault 101. I have no idea of why this is.

No not that i'm aware of i killed him on my first time through even with letting all out of the vault and going to muddy rudder he wont appear though, i suppose, if you have the PC version you could console him in?!?

More trouble than he's worth

In all fairness, I haven't yet tried to have just Butch as a follower. But, I did do the "Trouble on the Homefront" quest, got the Overseer to step down and let Amata open up Fallout Wiki. Then, I went to Rivet City (along with my companion, Charon) and talked to Butch. He'll join me (or let me join his gang), and I can swap equipment with him, but he won't follow me! (This is on the Xbox 360.) He seems like such a pain to recruit. You can't recruit him until after you've done about 3/4's of the main quest. You have to have Neutral karma. And he has only 2 usable tagged skills!--66.253.113.38 23:01, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Kinda like whats happening to me. I killed him on Trouble on the Homefront, so I created him using console in the Muddy Rudder. He follows me but wont let me trade equipment.

You can't recruit Fawkes until even later in the main quest, so what's your point?

  • Mr. Anon obviously didn't get the point here. Fawkes is practically a walking tank and instead of just having two or three useful skills his range is more diverse than a normal follower so he can be considered worth the wait. On the other hand Butch isn't, he has two usable tag skills, uses low-level default weaponry and one must maintain a neutral karma level to recruit him. If you also count the fact that you can only recruit him close to the end of the non-BS storyline it adds up to a very high maintenance follower, unless you like that sort of thing. Besides, if Fawkes was available near the start of the game it would be ridiculous, no? Actually to be frank, he's a ridiculous follower anyway. --Cartman! 18:21, April 6, 2010 (UTC)

EPIC HALP REQUIRED

Anyone know how to fix the glitch where he won't talk to you? I want him as a follower. (360) Hitting him then drawing your weapon and talking to him might help.

Older?

The article says he's older, but at your tenth birthday isn't he sitting at the table with the other kids, and he takes your sweet roll? That kid's not wearing a pipboy, so he has to be younger than you... Jdw 02:38, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

he is 100% younger.--85.0.87.169 16:53, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Actually, Butch IS wearing a pipboy at your party... Wally and Paul don't have pipboys (but Wally should have one as he is also older than you). So Butch is a little older than the Lone Wanderer. Snakewyvern 01:39, January 23, 2010 (UTC)

Wally aint older, thatll'e teach him to dis the party!

Better Butch?

We all know Butch sucks. We all know he REALLY sucks. I have him as a follower and he doesn't do crap damage. Any suggestions on how to amp him up? (Like what weapon I should give him WITHOUT mods!) I just gave him a deathclaw gauntlet and he is kinda good up close, but still blows when it comes to ranged. The pistol just isn't cutting it anymore. --Zyan 71.196.144.139 19:36, 12 June 2009 (UTC)The fuck you talking about, butch is the 3rd best follower damage wise, and he's the best cause' of all the tactical advantages, like taking his ammo so he only uses melee, and he aims for the head every shot.

WIth broken steel i gave him hellfire armor and callahans magnum...he's a better folower now. Fo2 BozarTime to die, bitch. 16:31, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
There is no way to make Butch a decent follower. Nitpicker of the Wastes 16:37, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
The GECK actually...setting his health to 5000000 and giving him the man opener makes him good. Butter 16:40, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
His dialogue alone makes him the best follower, Tunnel Snakes RULE! Actually, I gave him a Scoped .44 Magnum, Tesla Armor (Charon is using my Hellfire,) and as many stimpaks as he'll ever need. Plus I have every follower except Jericho and Clover, so battles usually end very quickly and in my favor. (360)
Just give him some power armor. He's a decent shot with a 10mm pistol and fires quickly which is all you need. If you are in need of a really strong follower then you're a noob.--86.146.1.175 22:30, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
I gave him Colonel Autumn's 10mm Pistol and he chews through enemies with such speed and accuracy that he takes out Deathclaws before I can get off more than one shot with my Gauss Rifle. Then again, I am at Level 30 and he levels with the character, so... try giving him armour that increases his Small Guns skill. Nevertheless, I always personally opt for Clover because she's the perfect balance between a decent follower whilst not being too powerful to ruin your combat pleasure like Fawkes does. 115.64.118.162 15:46, September 10, 2009 (UTC)

I gave Butch Colonel Autumn's 10mm Pistol fully repaired and ammo and i'm level 30 but he won't use it, instead he uses his regular 10mm Pistol. Can someone help.

Umm you gave him Colonel Autumn's 10mm Pistol? But yet you seem to be able to tell the difference between Colonel Autumn's 10mm Pistol and a normal 10mm Pistol, So I pose a question, are you sure hes using the normal one and if so how can you tell?

You can easily tell by checking his inventory and seeing if he has Colonel Autumn's 10mm Pistol equiped, if he does not and he is using a 10mm pistol than he's switched to his regular one. Also his 10mm ammo stops getting used. He's done this to me recently, not sure how to fix it though. Snakewyvern 02:38, January 19, 2010 (UTC)
I do need another follower since the rest of them were: A) Killed B) Pushed Off Cliff C) Horribleness at being a pack mule (points at Sticky). But I'd use Butch as some moral raiser and a pack mule. Sucks for the rest of my followers... they made it so easy to switch player housing... :c AreYouGoingToEatThatNuke? 11:21, January 21, 2010 (UTC)

Muddy Rudder

I never realised i could have him follow me in the beginning and i just kinda ran out of the vault not helping anyone and killing a guard for his gear. i never saw him during trouble on the home front and he's not at the Muddy Rudder. that brings me to the point of this, since according to the article he hould be there even if he died, where the hell is he? is the glitch not a gurantee? does it not work on 360? is he only there at certain times of day? wtf?! (Maverick21 06:48, 13 July 2009 (UTC))

Pungent Smell of Cheese!

I don't know if anybody else realized this, but there is a quote from Butch "Cheese it!" when one reverse-pickpocket a live grenade/mine onto him. It is extremely funny when he is sitting on a counter stool and he shouts "Cheese it!" and dies in front of Belle. It looks like he had an explosive fart and apparently it was fatal. Belle won't be hostile to the player if she was not harmed from the pungent blast. It adds to the fun if she says after Butch dies, "Better him than me," coldly. I have a PS3 version.

tagged science skill?

What can butch do with a tagged science skill, hack computers for you or is it just completly useless?

hes skilled in the science of barbering the hell out of your hair. my hair never felt the same again....and not in a good way. <:'(-The Fire Monkey 11:28, October 11, 2009 (UTC)

unlimited 10mm ammo?

Does he use 10mm ammo for weapons other than his pistol? (ie if I gave him STMUSMG or the Backwater rifle would he use up 10mm rounds) 68.192.9.90 02:59, October 24, 2009 (UTC) Yes they will use up 10mm ammo, his default weapon only needs one though.

How did he even make it to rivet city.

One thing I was wondering when doing my latest playthrough... how did butch even make it to rivet city with just a knife and a 10mm pistol. He must be hiding a hell of a set of combat armour under his jacket. --DragonJTSLeave me a message 07:14, November 30, 2009 (UTC)

if he wasnt just spawned at the muddy rudder then he would be screwed.

Problem with the 100% Power Fist

After I decided to get Butch as a companion I went to Paradise Falls and got the 100% Power Fist so he could use it as soon as I recruited him. I did "Trouble on the Homefront" (Amata became Overseer) and met up with him at the Muddy Rudder, recruited him took his Toothpick and gave him the Power Fist and had him switch to melee. He didn't equip it though, he just used his "nonplayer" switchblade. I tried swaping items with him several times to try and fix it but it didn't work. I even resorted to shooting his switchblade in a vain attempt to damage it somehow... needless to say, it didn't work. Then I gave him my beloved Deathclaw Gauntlet, he equiped it immediatly even though it was only at 75% CND. Does he just really like to stab people or something? This isn't really a big problem, he kicks ass with the Deathclaw Gauntlet... but it just looks wrong to see a guy wearing high-tech Hellfire armor and using a weapon that used to be an animal's hand. Gonna try to get him to use the Fisto! when I repair it enough... Has this happened to any of you guys? If so, any way to fix it? Snakewyvern 01:02, January 20, 2010 (UTC)

NO DIALOG?!

After i had completed trouble on the homefront, and went to the muddy rudder he had no dialogue. at this point i thought it was some sort of bug.

Base ID??? Young Butch

This article does not say young 10 year old butch's base id. What is the base id for young 10 year old butch during the birthday party? I need to know!!!

EDIT: Nevermind! I found out!!!! 300ea

Toothpick

Something may need to be added about when Butch actually has the unique switchblade "Butch's Toothpick". If you kill him during escape, he'll have a switchblade, but it will be a regular one. Maybe this is due to follower equipment? I wonder if giving him the BB gun then killing him would make it appear or does it not appear until trouble on the homefront? KaisarDragon 17:54, April 28, 2010 (UTC)

When does he appear/not appear in the Muddy Rudder?

From the article:

There are about nine different solutions to Trouble on the Homefront (check Trouble on the Homefront page to see all 9 solutions). However, it is not known which of the solutions will lead to or preclude his appearance in Muddy Rudder. It has been reported that he would appear if:
  • The vault is evacuated.
  • Overseer is persuaded to step down.
  • The Overseer is killed.
  • Amata and the rebels are convinced to stay. (Confirmed, although he will not talk to you (Note:the dialog screen will appear, but it will be empty and close after a brief amount of time).
  • The guards fulfill their secret plan located on the terminal in the security office.

Let's clear this up, shall we? Any info from the people? Thanks.--Gothemasticator 07:11, May 21, 2010 (UTC)

I have both evacuated the vault and killed the (new) overseer, and he has appeared in the Muddy Rudder and would talk to me and could be recruited. Dunno about the others, though. Metalspork talk  contribs

21:43, May 21, 2010 (UTC)

I have done Trouble on the Homefront quest aiding the Overseer and convicing the rebels to cause no more trouble. However I made a backup save because I was not sure if I would be able to get Butch as a follower afterwards, turns out that he appeared in Muddy Rudder and I was able to recuit him, when I confirmed this I erased this backup and do this quest again in the same way knowing that the're will be no problem to recruit him, but, after did it for the second time I was UNABLE to talk to him in the Muddy Rudder. This means that this bug, for all I know CAN or CAN'T happen to you regardless the choise you make on the quest. So ANY help with this bug will help a lot, since I do all the necessary precautions to verified that he CAN still follow you after shutting the Vault 101.

Radroaches

I imagine the answer is probably no but does Butch have any unique dialogue while fighting radroaches as a companion? Or does he flee? I'l' see myself if no-one knows.

no, he'll stay and fight anything even the most dangerous, deadly, FEARSOME beasts of the wasteland. i guess he finally stopped being such a sissy and manned up. and also, what the heck?!?!? he expects you to save his mom after he's been a complete *beeep* to u all your life??!??!!??!!!! but yeahh, if i saw roaches the size of a 1-year-old, i'd probably run for help and be a sissy too sooo........ really, who WOULDNT do that??! lol :)

when i see butch in a leather jacket i thought to my self that remindes me of gangs called the greasers. like in the game BULLY. or in a movie but i dont know what movie. come on im a kid and i know most lots of things that look alike i played fallout 3 for years.

no shit, sherlock. they're modeled after youth gangs in the 50's

Butch won't follow RL glitch?

Ok, so I'm trying the RL glitch...Did it successfully with Charon, so now I have Dogmeat, Charon, and RL. I did the Trouble on the Homefront quest and now Butch is in the Muddy Rudder bar...I have RL wait, then choose second option and then fire...He leaves the room, I hire butch, but he won't follow. He has all the commands of a companion, and I can select "Let's go", but his character still moves around muddy rudder as if I didn't hire him. What's the deal?

I'm having a similar issue. Was using the Puppies! perk glitch to recruit people, but I just went to Butch to recruit him completely solo, and after doing so he still just stood around the Muddy Rudder. What gives?--24.46.7.236 12:42, February 21, 2012 (UTC)

Butch's name

Tell me if this is too far fetched, but... Butch reminded me of a certain 1950s bully called 'Biff' from Back to the Future, where a certain 'DeLorian' also places an important role. Could that be the explanation for his name? 87.187.142.99 23:01, October 3, 2010 (UTC)

An explanation? Possibly. But it's far too weak to be considered a reference. Plus, aside from being of the bully gang leader archetype, Biff and Butch have nothing in common. --Kris User Hola 23:17, October 3, 2010 (UTC)
What? I thought it was blatantly obvious that Butch DeLoria is a double reference to the Back to the Future series, Biff Tannen specifically. Personal_Sig_Image.gif Tagaziel (call!) 23:21, October 3, 2010 (UTC)
I disagree. It's a very weak reference if it's one at all, which is unlikely. --Kris User Hola 23:23, October 3, 2010 (UTC)
Check out some pics of Biff. For one thing, he and his gang don't wear leather. Also, Biff is huge. Not so Mr. DeLoria.--Gothemasticator 00:17, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
Also, Biff is dumb. Very dumb. Butch is far from a genius, but he's got some smarts. --Kris User Hola 00:21, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
Not every reference needs to whack you over the head and scream "I'm a pop culture reference!". If he's not supposed to be a reference, then why is he named Butch (a name close to Biff in general feel) and DeLoria? DeLoria is not a common name and it's far less common with such capitalization. Unless, of course, you look up DeLorean DMC-12 and notice that the capitalization is exactly the same as in Butch's name. Note added to article. Personal_Sig_Image.gif Tagaziel (call!) 06:22, October 4, 2010 (UTC)

They don't look alike. They don't share common dialogue. Their actions don't mirror each other except in the broadest possible way. Butch is not similar enough to Biff to be meaningful. DeLoria and DeLorean don't really match up either. All we're left with is DeLoria sounds like DeLorean and they're both 50's bullies. That's not enough to go on.--Gothemasticator 06:37, October 4, 2010 (UTC)

What we're left with is:
  1. Biff, just like Butch is a stereotypical jock name
  2. Both are bullies in a 50s or 50s-inspired setting
  3. DeLoria is capitalized exactly like DeLorean; my search has not turned up anyone named Deloria who would capitalize his name in such a way, except, of course, for John DeLorean and his car.
As I said, not every reference needs to be "Hurr Durr I'm A Pop Culture Reference" like in Fallout 2. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean no one does. Personal_Sig_Image.gif Tagaziel (call!) 07:12, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
The hair, the jackets, "womb to tomb..." - the West Side Story et al reference already noted is plenty. And I'm not convinced by the DeLoria name. Why spell it differently at all if you're trying to reference Back to the Future? And why not give Butch some spectacularly dumb Biff-like lines? And why make Butch dress and look and act not like Biff if you're trying to reference him? Biff Tanner is already a parody or light-hearted sendup of the 50s bully stereotype. Again, I don't buy it, and, Grizzly, just because you do doesn't make it obvious or correct.--Gothemasticator 01:44, October 5, 2010 (UTC)

Obvious or not, we don't need an edit war between admins. Let's leave the reference out until Ausir or Porter21 have their say. --Kris User Hola 01:54, October 5, 2010 (UTC)

um maybe im missing something but, why does Butch's stats change in vault 106? Is this a glitch or just a typo for vault 101?

Vault 106

I am facing an interesting problem concerning Butch, which isn't written in the article. I am currently in Vault 106. Once in a while, my screen oddly turns purples, then back to normal. I was in the Science lab, and fired some rounds on the "Survivor" and, suddenly, the screen turned purple again, and the survivor became Butch AND Wally Mack AND Paul Hannon. Also, during purple screens, it seems I cannot kill them. They regain health instantly after being shot. Anyone has an explanation? KujaRhapsodos 15:34, January 14, 2011 (UTC) EDIT: They just disappeared along with the purple screen of death, and the Survivor came back.

Never find, I found the information elsewhere on the Wiki. KujaRhapsodos 15:43, January 14, 2011 (UTC)

Butch won't talk

First let me say I completed Trouble on the Homefront by convincing the rebels to stay inside Vault 101.

Butch appeared in the Muddy Rudder [Rivet City of course] and I approached him to see what he had to say, unfortunately he had nothing to say. The screen zooms in on Butch [as it normally does when you talk with somebody] and a small, empty dialog box appears [no dialog options or text whatsoever], then it just zooms back out immediately and nobody says anything.

Also I notice butch does not say a word. Unlike most residents of Rivet City [and just about anybody else you come across in the Wasteland] butch does not make any of those passing comments you tend to hear when walking close to somebody. I have even gone to the extent of trying to walk into him, fire weapons in his general vicinity and the like. He simply does not say a word. The only comments I can get out of him are by actually attacking him [things like, "What the hell man" and "At least I'm not stuck being a barber"]. And I must add that when I attack him residents in the Muddy Rudder go running but nobody in Rivet City becomes hostile, even when I kill him [still get bad karma though].

I must note my karma is high [last, best hope of humanity] however I understand this only affects your ability to recruit him as a follower and you should still be able to talk to him.

Glitch, or a result of how I finished the quest Trouble on the Homefront?

no matter how you complete trouble on the homefront he will always be at the muddy rudder but if you get the rebels to stay in vault 101 he wont have any dialogue.

Companion Bug

I just came across a bug if that's what you want to call it. When I got Butch, I already had Jericho and Charon in the past but both of them died. When Butch joined me it said that Jericho returned to Megaton and Charon returned to the 9th Circle. I checked and of course they were not there and still dead. :( 71.103.182.71 12:30, May 16, 2011 (UTC)

Butch's age

If Butch was born in December of 2257, and Escape! takes place in August of 2277, Butch hasn't yet turned 20, so shouldn't his age be listed as 19? 74.67.28.95 00:41, June 7, 2011 (UTC)

We don't list ages. Epsilon616 00:45, June 7, 2011 (UTC)

Well in that case someone should probably fix the first sentence of this page which says he's a "twenty-year-old resident." 74.67.28.95 14:44, June 7, 2011 (UTC)

Butch is obviously older than the Lone Wanderer since Butch didn't have his pipboy when the Lone Wanderer got his.

Saxony4 14:54, June 7, 2011 (UTC)

I think you got that backwards, Saxony4. That would make him younger, not older. --Kris User Hola 15:16, June 7, 2011 (UTC)
