Tips for alternate acquisition[]

  • One method is to target the holstered blade, one shot should break it, at which point it will be forced into Butch's inventory (where you can pickpocket it). Not having injured Butch will allow you to holster your weapon, ending the fight peacefully.
  • If accuracy is a problem shoot his arm with a high-power weapon until his arm is crippled and then quickly pick it up. You can also shoot the weapon itself but it will gain damage however it more likely to drop weapon. This is can be during the "Trouble on the homefront" quest after Amata sends for you to return to the vault. Save first and do this at the end of the quest when Amata asks you to leave the vault.
  • If you have a Stealth Boy and are crouched, having already shot the weapon out of his hand, if you use the Stealth Boy, all hostility will be gone.(works anywhere, so you can kill or enslave someone, crouch, and use a Stealth Boy, poof instant 72 hours or three days). Alternatively, you can just crouch with the Chinese Stealth Armor and it will provide the same effects as listed above.

Please note: Methods that involve shooting the Toothpick from Butch's hand/holster always have the disadvantage of making him hostile because the targetting 'spread' of fire hits his body and not just the weapon. It leaves him badly injured or crippled. Any other Vault residents who witness you attacking Butch will also turn hostile. --Theicla 02:50, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

Cutscene plot relationship between Butch's Toothpick and the BB Gun[]

Yeah, I think the notes section is a little sketchy "This is the unique switchblade that James, the father of the Lone Wanderer, used to repair the BB Gun given as a gift for Fallout Wiki Dweller's tenth birthday on July 13, 2268." What the hell is that supposed to mean? That Dad repaired the bb gun with the switchblade, or he repaired the switchblade itself, but then what is the part of the BB gun about? 76.1.240.60 23:18, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Indeed, I have no idea what that is about. It should removed unless it can be verified. --wexer9 23:28, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
  • The entry has already been editted to improve its grammatical sense. Admittedly, the original entry by Newark67 was accurate but oddly phrased. Sorry about that. As for whether it can be verified: look, guys, do you not recall the part that Butch's blade plays in the main story line? That's when your Dad (James) clearly explains how he and Jonas repaired the very first weapon obtainable in the game, your own personal radroach-smokin' Red Ryder BB gun. --Theicla 16:39, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
  • James says that they stole Butch's switchblade and used the spring from it to fix the BB Gun. It's possible that James discarded or returned it and Butch found it and replaced the spring at some point but it's also possible that he just got a new switchblade from somewhere. The former is implied but it's still ambiguous enough to warrant a mention, I think. --Withad 01:07, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
  • Yeah, we don't know for sure that this is the same switchblade. You get the BB Gun at 10! Where as you dont leave the vault til your 19! You really think after James took it and broke it, Butch was able to get it back, fix it, and then still has it 9 years later? I highly doubt it.God damn ghouls 22:23, April 12, 2010 (UTC)
  • You're ignoring the severity of deprivation in the Fallout world: At that point they're locked in Vault 101. They have NO REPLACEMENT SUPPLIES. And they're not allowed to go out and look for any. This hardship scenario is what compelled Jonas to jury-rig makeshift tools and equipment in the first place. Knowing this, what is the probability that (once James allowed Butch to 'rediscover' his lost knife) Butch would be forced to (or want to) keep using his semi-broken switchblade -- as it was -- until he found a replacement part? A switchblade doesn't actually need a spring in order to stay locked in the open position; it can still be used... as a toothpick perhaps, xD.
I will say this though: Yes, it's entirely possible it's not the same blade. Nevertheless the story cut-scenes imply a definite relationship between Butch's switchblade and how a part of it was used to repair the first BB Gun you get in the game. We can conclude the fact that Butch's default weapon is a Switchblade called Butch's Toothpick is at least a reference to that early event. --Theicla 18:21, April 23, 2010 (UTC)

Just Checking[]

Just checking here first, but do we have proof that quote "This is the switchblade that James, the father of the Lone Wanderer, states that he stole from Butch. James used it to repair the birthday gift BB Gun given to the Vault Dweller on July 13, 2268. " I'm just checking here before I make any changes on the article.

Oh and I'm new here. =] IAwnserFalloutQuestions 04:11, April 10, 2010 (UTC)

I don't think there is really any way to prove it one way or another. It may be that James left the broken pieces for Butch to find and somehow fix or maybe Butch found a new one. BoS Paladin Thumbnail Knight Captain Ski (talk) 04:32, April 10, 2010 (UTC)

Ok I'll take that part out then. Teh New Guy 20:17, April 10, 2010 (UTC)
  • Answer: The actual name of Butch's Toothpick is simply a plot reference. ^^^See my comments^^^ about the supply deprivation scenario in the previous subheading. --Theicla 18:21, April 23, 2010 (UTC)
