## Recording 12 Crash Edit

Anyone else crash when they try to access Recording 12? Also, the achievement doesn't trigger for me.

Yes, the game (1.7, PC) crashes for me too when I try to access this recording.

Already tried to restart the game? I have often problems with crashed or frozen games but its not really a problem to restart it. --Odypus 09:12, November 30, 2009 (UTC)

Just FYI this is still an issue with a fully patched un-modded game. I notice nobody else has posted their sound card or what codecs they have installed. I have a Creative SB X-Fi. I've disabled all the "problem" codecs identified by other users. What I notice is that even in the GECK, the 7th (last) audio file associated with this log will not play, but all others will. However, if I extract that OGG file from the BSA it plays just fine on my PC. I've confirmed this is definitely the problem (at least in my case) by creating a patch which eliminates this last piece of dialogue. Sure enough, the crash no longer occurs (though you lose the last line of the recording). I know this isn't a fix but at least it identifies where the problem lies and maybe someone with more knowledge than myself can come up with a solution now. - DeJuanNOnley (talk) 13:02, March 25, 2015 (UTC)
I hate to pat myself on the back, but I fixed it! All the dozens of posts on the Internet regarding this bug and some bored guy with nothing better to do fixed it. I may upload my self-made patch to the Nexus, but here's how you can do it yourself. 1) Extract "sound\voice\zeta.esm\dlc05npcuniquesally\dlc05gener_dlc05captivehol_0000a981_7.ogg" from "Zeta - Main.bsa". 2) Open the file in some audio editor (I used Audacity from SourceForge, but others will probably work as well). 3) Export/save the audio as a new OGG file. 4) Copy/move this new file to "[Fallout 3 Dir]\Data\sound\voice\zeta.esm\dlc05npcuniquesally\dlc05gener_dlc05captivehol_0000a981_7.ogg". Problem solved. No more crashes! The OGG file apparently has some screwed up metadata or something. Re-encoding the file fixes the problem. Some people don't encounter this bug most likely because whatever codecs they have installed are able to ignore the issue just as WMP can. In any case, following these simple steps fixes this bug 100% as far as I can tell. - DeJuanNOnley (talk) 14:00, March 25, 2015 (UTC)

There are three in the lab right after you get out of your holding cell. There are three control panels on the wall and activating them will give you the first three in the game.

Okay. Go forward out of your cell. Either turn left or right. Go all the way left until you can't. There are two on the wall in front of you. the third is on the center of the doorway when you turn around. If you go right out of your cell and go tho the lab, turn right. On the wall will be another one. Turn left when you walk in and there will be two more. Specific enough for you?

It seems that you find most of them next to or near the captives themselves.,

Yeah I'm missing that one too. The description in the list doesn't help at all. Where is "Waste Disposal"? Haven't seen that anywhere?
I definitely cannot find this one, I thought by the description it meant the place where you and the Cowboy make your stand, but I am searching and can't find anything there. What the HECK is the Waste Disposal area? --Scottendo
Ok, got it. It's in an area called Maintenance Level. It's accessible from the core but ONLY before the spacewalk. That would make this the only missable one.

## # 17 no audio Edit

Alright, so I find log number 17, the one with the "launch codes" but the human voice has got no audio! is this a problem restricted to me, or does everyone else have it as well?

Same problem here. Can hear the alien talking, and the subtitles display fine for the person, but there's no audio for the human voice. Which is annoying, because most of these have been pretty interesting, and the text of this one makes it sound like it would be no exception. That said... seeing that several of us do have an issue with the voice being missing, is there anyone who is not having this problem? Dan Dark 04:34, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

Although it is not known who launched the first nukes, China or the United States of America, I believe that the creators of Fallout 3 are possibly saying that it was a greater force, such as aliens, that could of started the Great War. At one point in the DLC, someone mentions clones of people are being made. My theory is that the Aliens got the launch codes, made a clone of whoever had access to the launch controls, and used the clone to start the nuclear war as some kind of grand experiment.

It is clear that the aliens have been watching the earth for thousands of year, as seen by the Japaneses Samurai, Cowboy Paulson, and the man in Audio recording #1. This shows that the aliens may not only watching, but meddling in the course of human history. At the end, of the DLC, the other alien ship, wants to destroy the planet, meaning, that the experiment was long over due, and it was time to end the experiment and by experiment I mean the planet earth and human existence as a whole. -- Morio-kun 07:25, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

The haven't necessarily been watching for thousands of years. To have the samurai and cowboy, they could have been around as few as 400 years (the mid-to-late 1800s), and that's still assuming they maintained a constant presence. Well, let's go over the facts:
1. The aliens try to get at the codes but do not succeed in the recording.
2. We don't know which time period the captive is from. His listing of defenses does not include any Power Armor units or "armored infantry" as it's called in military troop type terms, which would be in favor of him being from an earlier time period.
3. Since two of the devs stated they're fans of conspiracy theories, they probably intended to cause exactly this speculation. Doesn't mean it's true though.

Has anyone here read the book series "Area 51" By Robert Doherty. The Alien observation and manipulation of humanity and the creation of covert cult action upon the worship of the Aliens plays a prime role in the book series. Although this is a staple science fiction plot fulcrum since the 50's but if you have read "Area 51" and the sequels you might see where some of the plot ideas may run parallel.71.94.63.105 20:06, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Even if the aliens have the codes of the US ICBMs, and commenced the launch, they would have access to only 38 of them. In addition, the aliens would require a Chinese version as well, to cause both sides to launch simultaniously. While it is not impossible for the aliens to already have a Chinese captive with knowledge of Chinese missile codes, that person was not found by the Lone Wanderer onboard Zeta. However, it might have taken only 38 missiles to prompt the Chinese (using satelites to detect the first of those 38 missiles) to launch their arsenal as a responce. In that case Richardson's claim that the "Reds" launched first might have been made out of unawareness that the first ICBMs were launched from US installations/mobile launchers, thus claiming that the US responded to a Chinese launch, or that he merely makes this claim to place the US out of blame towards the Chosen One while being very much aware that the first missiles launched were indeed US missiles, having the Pentagon at the advent of the Great War to think something like: "We dont know how it got started and who is responsible, those are still our missiles, we might as well finish the job. The Chinese will most definately retaliate, we might as well take as many of them with us". In the latter case, the Pentagon would have ordered the launch of the remaining ICBMs, since 38 against possible hundreds would leave the US beaten and broken, with China having the much greater chance of surviving, and claiming victory, something unheard of in the Pentagon. ## Forever Hold your Peace Edit

What alien recordings do you have to get before you move on the quests. For example I know that recording number 19 has to be retrieved before the space wal or something. I am currently right before the spacewalk an di have one engineering core left to destroy which ones cant be retrieved after this.

## the room that has recording 4 Edit

Theres a control pannel to the left of the area's entrance opposite what I assume is some sort of cooling pipe, it has blue gas spewing out of it whatever it is lol.

I THINK IT WOULD BE INTERESTING IF THERE WERE RECORDINGS FROM DIRECTLY BEFORE OR AFTER THE BOMBS HIT. ALSO IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO HAVE A GHOUL RECORDING, BUT OTHER THAN THAT I THINK THAt these HOLODISKS ARE THE MOST INTERESTING ONES IN MY PIP BOY. AND IT WOULD ALSO BE COOL TO HAVE A SUPER MUTANT, BROTHERHOOD, ENCLAVE OR EVEN AN OASIS RECORDING. OR A COMMONWEALTH RECORDING, BECAUSE I AM VERY FASCINATED BY THE IMMENSE TECHS AND SCIENCES OF THE COMMONWEALTH. HERES HOPING THAT IT BECOMES A LOCATION IN THE NEXT GAME. ## Captive Recording 12 - Speaker Edit

I don't think the person speaking is Sally or her sister. When you first find Sally and ask her about her family, she indicates that both her parents died before or during the bomb drop in 2077, she and her sister were abducted some time after that. Since the child in the recording asks for "Mommy and Daddy" it can't be either of them since they both know their Mommy and Daddy are in Heaven now. It could be just some unnamed child or it could be Arthur Wallace mentioned by her mother Madeline (Of the Cincinnati Wallaces?) in Recording 4. He's the only child abductee we know of that has a mommy, a daddy and a sister.

... Or maybe I think about these things too much.

## Revise the order of the recordings? Edit

## Order in PipBoy Edit

So this is my first run through of this DLC. From what I understand in looking at this listing, it's not possible to get all of the recordings into your PipBoy in numerical order because some areas become inaccessible.

Is it possible to get the recordings in numerical or no?

## Tape 25 Edit

Tape 25 may also be referencing a Kurt Vonnegut book that I cannot remember the name of. The main character is, or believes he is, abducted by aliens and forced to live in a zoo like situation complete with his own personal woman and a very comfortable living.

## Nuclear Launch Codes (aka: Num17) & Thoughts Edit

Here's a thought. During the Cold War era, there was a concept referring to MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction), that, in the event of either side launching missiles, the other side would, without question, retaliate in kind. Supposing that China had sufficient warning, or at least capabilities for some to survive/remotely launch missiles, or maintained an AI/computer system (which I'll whimsically call 'Skynet') to launch it in the event of either A: the failure of a human to input a code/toggle a switch/yada yada (a deadman switch), or B: detecting radiation above a preset level (called background radiation, Earth does have a background radiation which was raised, globally, just by all the nuclear testing and Hiroshima & Nagasaki), is it not possible that the US launched first unknowingly via the aliens, as per the hints in recording #17. We know

1. Someone high-ranking within the DoD (Department of Defense) was captured, and they are aware of the launch codes & military strengths.
2. That a US Senator (potentially someone required to countersign the order, required by launch procedures to prevent a single person from launching a nuclear bomb) was captured.
3. An officer of the Enclave was captured (we do not know when he was captured, he was potentially captured shortly after the war and only recent, uhm, thawed). Ergo, he may also have knowledge or the like of nuclear weapons codes.
4. The assistant CEO (Chief Executive Officer, head of the company) of Vault-Tec was captured. We know, that, to a fair extent, Vault-Tec had friends in high places, and could've potentially influenced a nuclear-bomb-related decision, after all, they did convince the USG (United States Government) to hand over hundreds, if not thousands of civilians for testing under the "Vault Program", and had members in the Enclave.

This leaves another potential option, that if the above is valid, that (potentially, but unlikely), the US nuked itself. Which is silly, but not impossible.
