I am here to assist these good people in understanding the workings of the Children of the Cathedral.

Talius is an FEV mutant who resides at the Boneyard Library (underground) of the Followers of the Apocalypse. He is a former Vault 13 dweller and one of the first sent out to seek a replacement water chip. He is the only other living dweller encountered outside the Vault in Fallout.

Background[]

A former Vault 13 dweller,[1][2] Talius volunteered to the Overseer to recover a spare water chip, when problems with the water purification system first manifested. Handed a shotgun and some shells, he set out cross the wasteland. Although he searched for years, he couldn't locate a spare and thus could not return to his home.[3] Eventually, he caught a breakthrough and learned from a chance encounter with travelers that Necropolis could purify water in vast quantities with ease. Upon arrival in the ruined city, Talius joined forces with Set, and fought the supermutants under Harry at the watershed. He managed to kill off most of the garrison with Set's assistance, before he was captured.[4] It seems that he was exposed to FEV not at Mariposa, but at Necropolis itself, by Children of the Cathedral medics[5] supervised by the Lieutenant.[6]

For one reason or another, the FEV did not work as expected. Instead of changing him into an enhanced human, it took a different evolutionary course and turned him into a unique FEV mutant like Harold.[7] The Followers rescued him before his transformation was complete and halted the mutation process. Talius was unconscious throughout the process and awoke in the Boneyard Library, tended to by a Follower doctor.[8] Though he was originally of limited intelligence, the teachings of the Followers helped him cope with the effects of transformation and allowed him to overcome his limitations (it's also possible that the FEV enhanced his intelligence).[9] In return, he decided to remain at the Library and help the Followers understand the inner workings of the Children of the Cathedral.[5]

Though he is disfigured by his mutation (making him look like a ghoul), he remains somewhat recognizable to the Vault Dweller.[10] Talius would like to see Vault 13 open and the dwellers to leave its confines to rebuild the world once more. While he understands that the Overseer is cautious and bears the burden of responsibility for the dwellers' welfare, he would prefer that he came to his senses.[11][12] He is aware that more people were sent out to search for a solution for the Vault's deteriorating water purification system, and the Vault Dweller can pick up on that thread.[13]

Though polite and soft-spoken, he has no patience for insolence or bigotry and will cut the conversation short if someone insults him as a mutant.[14][15] Conversely, if someone is willing to listen, he can be very patient in his imparting of knowledge.[6]

Quests[]

  • Cut content Find Children spy in the Followers: Talius can be accused of being a Children spy. He will refute this and ask the Vault Dweller for help in rooting the spy out. While the quest will activate and appear in the log, it's only partially implemented and cannot be completed. Activating the quest will also cause him to only respond in floats, preventing other interactions.

Other interactions[]

  • If the Vault Dweller asks about the watershed mutants and then about the leader of the mutant army, then promises to kill the mutants for Talius, he will give them a flamer and 20 units of flamethrower fuel, taken from a deceased renegade.[16]
  • If the Vault Dweller killed the mutants at the watershed, they can report it to Talius and also receive a flamer.
  • If the Vault Dweller has less than 4 Intelligence, Talius will give them three doses of Mentats to improve it. On the other hand, if they have 6 or more Intelligence, they'll be able to pursue a more erudite dialogue path.[8]

Appearances[]

Talius appears in Fallout and is mentioned in the Fallout Bible installments 4, 5, and 8.

Behind the scenes[]

  • In Fallout Bible 4, Chris Avellone theorized that the Hub may have had a handful of ghouls like Talius around, in order to explain why

the Hub's good ending mentioned ghouls despite there being none present in the actual game.[Non-game 1]

  • In Fallout Bible 8, Chris Avellone referred to Chris Taylor's answer about Ed being sent out from Vault 13. Taylor wasn't clear if Talius came out before or after Ed, but Avellone suggested that he may have left before Talius.[Non-game 2]
  • Talius is the name of a Roman gens or family,[Meta 1] and a metalworker of that name is known to have lived in Gaul in the first century CE.[Meta 2]

  1. Fallout Bible 4: "9. Do YOU guys know what that ending of the Hub with ghouls and humans uniting is all about? It says Harold and the VD unite the ghouls and humans of the Hub. Anybody seen more ghouls than Harold in the Hub? Can't be about Necropolis, because it's the ONLY good ending for the Hub."
Although there weren't any ghouls shown in the Hub in Fallout 1, there may have been a handful wandering around in Old Town (kind of like Talius the ghoul in the Boneyard). The ending is more appropriate if you just mentally change the word "ghouls" to "skags." Basically, peace and harmony reign supreme. It's possible several ghouls traveled to the Hub during the Migration after they formed their engineering development house in Necropolis."
  2. Fallout Bible 8: "5. Ed, according to Chris Taylor, was a Vault Dweller who went out before the PC. And maybe before Talius, I guess. So you might be the third person out. As for Ed, he's covered in Bible #6, I think - just so a search for "Ed.""
