The T-45d power armor is a piece of armor in Fallout: New Vegas.

Created by West Tek,[1][2] the T-45 powered combat infantry armor was the first design of its kind pressed into service during the Sino-American War,[1] first deployed in 2067 on the Alaskan Front to counter the Chinese offensive. As the development of power armor by West Tek began only in August 2065, the T-45 lacked the mobility of future versions, but the ability to wield heavy ordnance and excellent protection proved to change the nature of modern warfare.[2] China immediately rushed to create its own version to counter the T-45, but lagged behind. The T-45 was effectively a stop-gap model utilizing existing technologies and manufacturing techniques. This temporary solution would eventually become the mainstay of American power armor units, especially as subsequent upgrades reduced the impact of the mobility problems that plagued the early production runs.[3][Non-game 1]

The ability to operate crew-served weapons and heavy ordnance alone is one of the key advantages offered by the T-45d power armor. Although the T-45d (and indeed, no power armor to date) had built-in weapons, the operator could use any kind of weapon that could be fired by an infantryman.[Non-game 1] Protection came in second. The use of steel plating offered a considerable advantage against most small arms and used existing technologies and materials, allowing the U.S. to quickly manufacture and deploy T-45d suits.[4] However, the armor had its limits and as the war with China dragged on, it became insufficient in both the ability to deploy firepower and protect the operator. However, as the T-51 power armor model did not arrive until 2076, the T-45d became the workhorse of the American military and a test-bed for related technologies.[Non-game 1]

The original prototypes survived to 2077 and were slated to become literal museum pieces at the Museum of Technology on the National Mall in 2078.[5] Harold Frost, one of the T-45's original designers, would later go on to design the Excavator power armor for the Garrahan Mining Company.[6]

Following the Great War, the T-45d power armor became a rare sight and a powerful asset for anyone who can procure such a suit. The principal operator of the armor is the Brotherhood of Steel and its offshoot chapters, with the largest known numbers being utilized by the rogue Lyons' Brotherhood of Steel and the loyalist Outcasts in the Capital Wasteland.

Gameplay attributes

T-45d power armor provides a damage threshold of 22 as well as a bonus of 10% to Radiation Resistance, +2 to Strength and a -2 penalty to Agility. It is not quite as protective as T-51b power armor or its variants, nor is it as protective as Remnants power armor, but it still provides protection superior to every other form of non-powered armor in the base game, the only exception being Desert Ranger combat armor that has the same amount of DT. The Elite riot gear armor also shares the same DT, and is obtained in the Lonesome Road.

Notes

  • The armor given to you by Elder McNamara/Hardin after completing either Eyesight to the Blind or Tend to Your Business, is the normal T-45d power armor rather than the Brotherhood variant. This is most likely to remove a neutral setting and danger from a "disguise".
  • If you have the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Honest Hearts, the Desert Ranger combat armor may be a better choice than this armor. It has the same DT and has a much lower weight, 30 pounds compared to 45 pounds, and does not require Power Armor Training. However, the T-45d does give a Strength bonus of 2, so it could be a better choice for heavy weapons based players.
  • If a user wearing this is shot in the head without a helmet, blood will come out along with the metal "clank" sound made if shot while wearing power armor.
  • When wearing this armor's helmet or any other power armor's helmet, the PC is not affected by the voice changer.
  • The armor also has a Brotherhood of Steel insignia like the faction based version. Whether this was intentional or not is unknown.

Bugs

  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 This armor has a Brotherhood of Steel emblem on the left pauldron, despite not being Brotherhood armor. This can be fixed on PC with the following mod New Vegas Nexus
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 When you sit down the shoulder pads will rotate and clip inside the body. The same glitch also occurs with the T-51b.
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 When running with most two handed weapons it will clip the middle section of the armor, making it look like it is going through to your stomach.
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 When you swim the shoulder plates will not move and your arms will go through the plates.
