The Super mutant overlord is a type of Vault 87 Super Mutant. They are evolutionarily somewhere between Super Mutant Masters and Super Mutant Behemoths[1].

Super Mutant Overlords are some of the toughest enemies in Fallout 3, wielding powerful weapons and possessing 2.5 times as much health as a Deathclaw or Sentry Bot.

Weapons

Overlords carry Gatling Lasers, Missile Launchers, Tri-Beam Laser Rifles, and Super Sledges as standard weapons. In a rare case, you may find an Overlord with a Minigun, Assault Rifle, AER9 Laser Rifle, or Chinese Assault Rifle. Sometimes, like in Germantown Police HQ, one may be found carrying a hunting rifle but not using it since he can't, as instead he uses his fists.

If an Overlord picks up a rifle normally used by other Mutants, like a Chinese Assault Rifle, they will use only one hand to fire it but they will never use two rifles at once against you.

It appears that they are most commonly equipped with Tri-Beam Laser Rifles as ranged weapons, this can be problematic (especially on higher difficulty levels) since they inflict an extra 40 damage per shot even if you have 85% damage resistance they can still knock off roughly 25% of your health (assuming you have nearly 600 hp) making Overlords exceptionally deadly with this weapon.

Notes

  • They have a different facial design from Fawkes, Uncle Leo and the default Vault 87 Super mutant, who all have the same face. They're also a bit more muscular than normal Super Mutants.
  • Overlords grant the same XP award as Super Mutant Masters, even though Overlords are much stronger.
  • Reverse pick-pocketing does not work on Overlords carrying Tri-Beam Laser Rifles; however it is possible to reverse pickpocket grenades/mines onto Overlords carrying Gatling Lasers or Super Sledges.
  • Overlords have one major weakness: If you shoot the weapon out of their hands, they usually go and look for a weapon, rather than attack with their fists.
  • Overlords walk differently than other Super Mutants. Any super mutant that is not an Overlord or a Behemoth will walk mostly like a human, but Overlords are more hunched over and walk as if their legs are a little too long.

Locations

Super Mutant Overlords can be encountered anywhere where regular Super Mutants appear but only at high levels.

  • This editor ran into a Tri-Beam Laser Rifle Overlord at an area south of The Citadel at level 5.

Appearances

Super mutant overlords appear in the Fallout 3 add-ons Broken Steel and Mothership Zeta.
