The Southwest Commonwealth was one of the thirteen commonwealths of the pre-War United States. Created in the early 21st century, it was comprised of the former states of Southern California, Nevada and Hawaii.

New CaliforniaEdit

Main article: New California

New California is a region defined by the New California Republic that comprises northern Nevada and all of California.

Former Southern CaliforniaEdit

Also known as the Core Region, what was once southern California is a stark image of the effects of atomic warfare.

The city of San Diego was hit during the war, with its inhabitants eventually leading an exodus to the ruins of Los Angeles, also known as the Boneyard. The Boneyard is a vast stretch of ruined buildings, baking under the sun. In between is the Glow, the ruins of West Tek Research Base. The Hub, Junktown, and Shady Sands are further up north.

Former NevadaEdit

The former state of Nevada is described as an empty no man's land in 2161, at least when compared to the Southern California Wasteland.[1]

The region is, indeed, sparsely populated. New Reno is the most significant town of northern Nevada, with smaller settlements such as Vault City, Gecko and Broken Hills dotting the map.

Mojave WastelandEdit

Main article: Mojave Wasteland

The Mojave Wasteland is a wasteland that comprises southern Nevada and parts of California and Arizona. The Mojave Wasteland is having power struggles between the NCR invaders, Caesar's Legion tribals, and Mr. House. Hoover Dam and the New Vegas Strip are the main interests and concerns. Drug running, gang life, and rampaging tribals are not rare in the area, as well as runaway creatures and hostile wildlife.

Known locationsEdit

The Southwest Commonwealth appears in Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout: New Vegas, and is mentioned in all of its add-ons, as well as Fallout 3 and the Fallout Bible. It was also to appear in Van Buren and Jason Mical's Fallout Pen and Paper d20. The pre-War iteration of the Fabulous New Vegas sign appears in the Atomic Command game in Fallout 4.

  2. Dialogue with Joshua Graham indicates a California location: "Something bad happened near Death Valley, at a place called the Divide. NCR couldn't cut across anymore and it slowed down their reinforcements. Terrible storms ripped entire companies apart before they even got to Nevada soil."
