The Sole Survivor is the player character and main protagonist in Fallout 4. Depending on the player's choice, the Sole Survivor is either Howard or Nora, a pre-War married couple.
Background
The Sole Survivor is spending a pleasant Saturday morning with their partner and child. They then get accepted into Vault 111 by a Vault-Tec representative after verification. The protagonist briefly spends time with their infant son, Shaun and their partner, only moments before the alarms ring out to signal a nuclear attack. The family then sprints towards the vault, along with other neighbors and a nuclear bomb detonates nearby as they wait for Vault 111's hatch to open. The protagonist survives the blast and is lowered into the vault. Two hundred years later (for reasons currently unknown) the protagonist emerges from Vault 111 as the sole survivor.
Notes
- Like the Lone Wanderer from Fallout 3, the Sole Survivor is seen being accompanied by a dog in promotional material for the game.
- The Sole Survivor is the first fully-voiced protagonist in the Fallout series.
- In a departure from previous games, character customization is done without slider options. During the opening portion of the game, the character stands in front of a mirror and alter facial features using a cursor. While making changes, the spouse stands behind the Sole Survivor and makes comments about the alterations. It is here where gender can be changed, having the default male character step aside allowing the female to be altered and become the protagonist.
- Once the Sole Survivor's sex is chosen, the other will become a non-player character.
- In the character creator one can choose facial hair called "Lone Wanderer" which is a reference to the protagonist referred to with the same name from Fallout 3.
- Some characters can refer to the player character by name, as Bethesda has recorded over 1000 popular names for use in-game.
Notable quotes
- "Let's go, pal."
- "Ready to fuck some shit up?"
- "It's good to be back."
- "What do you think, hon? Beard or no beard?"
- "Sugar Bombs. One hundred percent daily value of sugar. "
- "Nuka Cola, ice cold."
Appearances
The Sole Survivor appears only in Fallout 4.
