To complete the quest, the Vault Dweller needs to head northwest of the bunker on the world map. After a few days of travel, the [[Mariposa Military Base|military base]] will show up. Entering the location is considered scouting.
===Scope out the wastes===
 
Once you're ready, head to the northwest. After a few days of travel, you'll notice that the rocky wasteland reveals a massive [[Mariposa Military Base|military base]], built into the side of a mountain. A quick look around the area will reveal several super mutant patrols; get out of there before they tear you to ribbons!

When the existence of the base is revealed to High Elder Maxson, he convenes with the remaining Elders and the Vault Dweller may attempt to [[Convince the Elders to send help|convince the Elders]] that he requires Brotherhood assistance in storming the base or [[Cathedral]].
Once you return, Maxson will draw the rest of the Elders into a meeting.

Once Maxson gives the quest, the player needs to ask for an additional weapon. He will then redirect them to [[Mathia]], who will allow the Vault Dweller one of the following:
You can talk the Elders into sending a small detachment of soldiers to the military base, to help you infiltrate it. This causes three "crack" paladins to spawn at the entrance to the base. They'll fight the four mutants stationed outside, but won't follow you in. Still, now you can easily [[Destroy the source of the Mutants]].

* The Paladins will still appear at the base even if you kill all of the super mutants outside before returning to the Brotherhood with the information.
 
*The Paladins prove to be more of a problem than a benefit because if you were to enter the base without the Paladins you have a chance to talk the mutants into not becoming hostile, this saves you from alot of fighting with heavily armed super mutants, entering the area with the Paladins help turns the whole base hostile.

Scout the northern wastes is an unmarked quest in Fallout, given by High Elder John Maxson of the Brotherhood of Steel.

Detailed walkthrough

Initial reports from scouts, as well as the location of the mutant body that Vree recovered, indicates that there's a massive source of super mutants brewing in the northern wasteland. The Elders of the Brotherhood of Steel want the Vault Dweller to verify the rumors.
