Trust the king for all your TV and Radio needs.— Radiation King slogan

Radiation King was a pre-War company that manufactured several popular lines of radio and television sets.

Background[]

Radiation King was contracted by Vault-Tec Corporation to provide television sets and other appliances for Vaults.[Non-game 1]

Appearances[]

Radiation King products appear in Fallout, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76. A store makes an appearance as a location in Fallout 3, while a Radiation King factory that was taken over by the U.S. Army appears in Fallout 76.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The Radiation King is one of several Simpson references in the Fallout series. The first appearance in the Fallout intro was a deliberate inclusion by Leonard Boyarsky, hidden there to make Tim Cain laugh.[Non-game 2]
    • The appearance of the set refers to Homer Simpson's childhood television set as seen in episode 10 of season 06, "Grampa vs. Sexual Inadequacy". The joke references how some first generation vacuum tube TV sets (particularly a line of early color TVs produced by General Electric) were later found to be poorly shielded and emitting levels of X-ray radiation far in excess of modern safety standards. This is shown in the episode by how Homer's childhood shadow has been permanently burned into the floor and wall of his childhood home, and is still there 30 years later.
  • The Radiation King swivel-screen TV sets found in Fallout 3 (eg. the pre-War house theme) are identical to the Philco Predicta, a real world television set and an iconic appliance of the 1950s. While Philco has since gone out of business, Telstar purchased the rights and are currently selling color models with the same look but with updated electronics.

Pop Culture played a big role in Fallout, what pop culture influences you?
Leonard Boyarsky: "Books, TV, movies, music, anything and everything that floats into my consciousness. During the making of FO1 we kept trying to sneak pop culture references into every aspect of the game, from 'Star Wars' to 'Simpsons' to everything in between. I mostly tried to hide Simpsons references wherever I could just to make Tim laugh. The TV in the intro is a 'Radiation King', for instance."
