Prometheus Coal was a coal mine operator that opened the Eagle's Rock mine complex in central Utah in 2039. It was eventually sold to the U.S. government in 2066, to serve as a radioactive waste dump.

In Greek mythology, Prometheus is a second-generation titan who was responsible for stealing fire from Zeus, the king of the gods, and giving it to mankind. The name itself in Greek (Προμηθεύς) means "forethinker".
