[edit] Background

This area was never directly hit by the bombs, but here wasteland's desert gives way to dense swamps and abandoned buildings where the nature gradually removes the human presence. The area is home to Swampfolk, a highly deformed people who live all around the swamps. Ghouls and Mirelurks are common sight here as well. It is strange to see such a large concentration of ghouls in an area which was never hit directly.

Point Lookout is almost devoid of organized society, aside from Tobar the Ferryman, Haley's Hardware, Madame Panada, and the Point Lookout Tribals, it is extremely difficult to find someone to trade with. However, at the same time Point Lookout should be, as it is referred to, a treasure trove, however what kind of treasure is dubious at best. Considering that Point Lookout had escaped the nuclear turmoil that scarred most of the earth, it was also most likely saved from the harmful effects of the EMP set off by nuclear warheads. Thus making Point Lookout more than just a small swampy marsh, rather a technological cache to be extorted, perhaps by the likes of you one last time. This would explain how Desmond was able to construct or locate (probably from Turtle Dove Detention Camp) a radio jammer, which is one of the most advanced pieces of electronics left in the game, aside from things with military applications. However, unfortunately the amount of tech available for mining from the area is vastly limited, considering not only its rural location, but its isolationism and even any tech that was stored there has probably become waterlogged or been looted by traders and smugglers. Point lookout also plays as the final resting place of SL-N199 Chinese stealth submarine, which was and still is, while intact one of the technological marvels of the 22nd century. A second remnant of the old world being the jammer, third and fourth being the numerous treasures to be uncovered in Turtledove, the jet crash site, and so on.

Many references to the Civil War can be found in the graveyards, and mausoleums that dot the area, as well as the abundance of Confederate hats, and Lever-action rifles.

The area become known to outsiders thanks to Punga Fruit, a unique fruit known to grow only in the local bogs, and many legends about treasures hidden here.

Even though it wasn't directly hit by the bombs, the water is irradiated. This could be explained by a (very likely) connection to other water sources or the rain. It can also be explained by the fact that a nuclear detonation in other cities could kick up enough radiation to travel the distance to Point Lookout, and over time, settle over the region.

The radiation led to the birth and evolution of the swampfolk, irradiated water, and unusual patches of an unknown, green, smoking substance that releases flammable bubbles occasionally. This is biogas that accumulated because of the mass graves in the area, which then decomposed and pooled into a flammable gas.
