Never thought a reporter could consider themselves a success until someone threatened their life. Me? I'm very successful.— Piper Wright, Fallout 4

Piper Wright is a possible companion of the Sole Survivor living in Diamond City in 2287. She runs her own newspaper called "Publick Occurrences", and has a younger sister named Nat.[2][3]

Background

Piper grew up in a small community outside of the Commonwealth with her sister, Nat and their father, who was a member of the local militia. After her father was found dead under suspicious circumstances Piper learned that he had discovered a raider plot to sack the town. His superior, Captain Mayburn, arranged to leave the main gate open and unguarded one night to allow raiders access in exchange for a cut of the loot.

Piper's father was murdered by Mayburn for threatening to expose his treachery. However, the local authorities did not believe these claims and refused to investigate. Piper then made and circulated wanted posters featuring the captain and a list of his crimes. The settlers, outraged by the story, exiled Mayburn and successfully drove off the raiders.

Eventually Piper and Nat relocated to Diamond City where she began her career as an investigative journalist. Her fervor for discovering the truth made her popular for a while, but eventually public opinion turned against the nosy reporter. Piper's work has led to multiple death threats, assassination attempts, and even a near-execution by the Children of Atom. Even so, finding herself in sticky situations is a point of pride for Piper, who feels getting into trouble is just part of chasing the truth.

When the Sole Survivor first encounters Piper she is on the brink of exile from Diamond City for writing a negative article about Mayor McDonough. While arguing with the gate guard to be let back in, she asks for the Survivor's assistance in bluffing past security. Once inside, Piper advises the Survivor to seek out Nick Valentine for help finding their son, and asks they stop by her office afterward. Completing an interview with her leads to Piper offering to travel with the player and watch their back as they adjust to life in the wasteland.

Other interactions

  • If the Sole Survivor has already found Nick Valentine before traveling to Diamond City the gate will already be open and the mayor will be interacting with Piper inside.
  • Diamond City guards will tell you to be careful about having her as the companion because of the trouble between her and the mayor.
  • If the Sole Survivor didn't do the interview yet, exit Diamond City and enter again later, Piper can be found in McDonough's office accusing his secretary of sleeping with him.
  • As the Sole Survivor's companion she will often offer aid in the form of "sweet" food and drink (gumdrops, sweet rolls, bubblegum, Nuka Cola, etc.). This is similar to Strong who offers food as well, but in the form of meats.
  • Bringing Piper back to Diamond City may cause Nat to run up to her and tell a story about being given detention at school. Piper will then tell her she is grounded, much to Nat's chagrin. However, another conversation has Piper congratulate Nat on getting detention (due to punching a boy who was annoying her), telling her never to change.
  • She also has an interaction with the Sole Survivor about how she believes Nat idolizes her too much, she hopes that time apart will prevent Nat growing up to be like her. The Sole Survivor can offer advice on how to deal with the situation.
  • If in a relationship with her, then dismiss her to flirt with another character and romance them, Piper may be found at Nick Valentine's office asking him to keep an eye on the Sole Survivor, which he seems to refuse.
  • Occasionally, when passing Takahashi, Piper will tell the player she wants to introduce him/her to her informant. She will jokingly interrogate Takahashi, finishing by saying that Takahashi 'spilled the beans, I bet your name isn't even really Blue'.
  • Visiting the upper levels with Piper will cause Wellingham to pretend to loudly throw her out, while secretly sharing a bit of gossip and intrigue with her.
  • If the player ends the main quest by siding with The Institute and then talks to Piper, she might be distraught and angry at the player for the world they had created, though the player can still have her travel with them as a companion. However, if the player's affinity with Piper is high enough (or grows high enough), she will write an article titled Fear the Future? where she reveals to be more optimistic, though still wary, of the future.

Effects of player's actions

  • At maximum approval Piper awards the Gift of Gab perk, which doubles experience from persuasion successes and finding new locations.

Notes

  • Piper will call the player character "Blue", referring to the Sole Survivor's blue jumpsuit. If the Survivor is not wearing their vault-issued jumpsuit, Piper will simply say it's obvious the player character must be from a vault, and comparing them to a fish out of water.
  • Piper has sympathy towards ghouls, often commenting "Poor ghoul bastards" after they are killed.
  • It appears Piper is interested in Grognak the Barbarian. When she accompanies the Sole Survivor into Hubris Comics, she asks the player character to give her any back-issues of Grognak the Barbarian they find for use as "research material". She'll also be a bit flustered when you wear the Grognak costume (unsure if this happens outside of maximum affinity levels).
  • Piper tends to make jokes around Takahashi due to him always asking "nani ni shimasu ka?"
  • Piper asks if the art in the Pickman Gallery is full of "abstract art".
  • It seems Piper will say "Something's not right here" around disturbing phenomena.
  • If Piper is present when the player character talks to Magnolia, she will clumsily compliment her, saying "Nice set...of songs I mean."
  • Piper's outfit includes several pen-pockets on the back of her right forearm, which would make sense if she were left-handed, but in combat, she is right-handed like the Sole Survivor and other characters.
  • In the quest The Secret of Cabot House its best to dismiss Piper before choosing the outcome of Lorenzo Cabot. She dislikes BOTH choices (its a lose/lose situation with her). This can be avoided by choosing neither, and instead letting Lorenzo break free due to player inaction. Successfully siding with the family through speech checks later in the quest also prevents her from disliking the player.
  • If taken to Nate/Nora's corpse in Vault 111, she will say "Is, is that who I think it is? You okay?"
  • Despite being essential, Piper has a death quote. Upon being killed Piper will utter "Blue..."
  • Piper will become hostile if assaulting a traveling doctor and their brahmin, even if having romanced her.
  • When ordered to enter a power armor suit, Piper will take off the helmet of the power armor and place it into her inventory.
  • She will mention that she has an uncle "James" living up in the DC Area, indicating she may be related to James, assuming it's not merely an in-joke. It likely is just a joke.
  • She will do an animation where she chews on a pen if a penis in her inventory.

Notable quotes

  • "Why don't we ask the newcomer? Do you support the news?"
  • "Look, I gotta go get settled in, but, um, stop by my office later. I have an idea for an article that you would be perfect for."
  • "I wonder if this is normal for other journalists..."
  • "What I wouldn't give for the biggest rolled up newspaper..."
  • "Now, now. Don't start what you can't finish."
  • "Watch your digits, Blue. Ferals."
  • "I'm so confused. This didn't sail up here... right?"
  • "I can't feel my face when I sniff glue."
  • "I'm with the person I love, helping those in need. I couldn't imagine a better life." (If the player character has romanced her.)
  • "The Brotherhood sure knows how to take the fun out of dressing up in rivets and leather." (If asked about her thoughts while she is in power armor.)
  • "You really do have a talent for finding trouble, don't you."
  • "A real shame. They still had a lot more rounds of musical chairs left." (When seeing what's left of the support group meeting in Vault 95.)

Appearances

Piper appears in Fallout 4 and Fallout Shelter.

Bugs

  • PCPC There are times where Piper would fall to the ground during a conversation as if she was injured to 0 health. [verification overdue]
  • Playstation 4Playstation 4 Piper's eyes can randomly always look towards a specific side (left or right of her eye sockets) making conversations with her look awkward. Definitely occurs after she exits a power armor. [verification overdue]
  • Playstation 4Playstation 4 When Piper would normally comment on an action (entering power armor, picking up an item, etc.) sometimes she'll comment on it much later than she normally was supposed to. [verification overdue]
  • Playstation 4Playstation 4 Anything that makes Piper like or dislike that will show up much later after the action already happened, instead of near instantaneous. [verification overdue]
  • Playstation 4Playstation 4 The romance dialogue option for Piper is missing and unresponsive even if the player character has maxed her affinity to idolized. There is no known fix. [verification overdue]
  • Playstation 4Playstation 4 She won't move. You can talk to her but she won't move even if you command her to. She can also fast travel.
