You have extra inherent protection against energy attacks.— Fallout 2 In-game description

Phoenix Assault Enhancement is a special perk in Fallout 2.

Background[]

Main article: Phoenix implants

An upgrade for the standard Phoenix implant, the assault enhancement adds additional thermal dissipators, layering them over the original membranes and doubling the effective resistance to 10%. While the original implant is unpleasant, the upgrade is far more aggressive: It causes the skin to blister badly, giving it the appearance of bubble wrap, while the invasive procedure causes severe itching and a risk of significant scarring, if the patient disturbs the pus-crusts over the drainage incisions.[1] The amount of thermal dissipators permanently alters appearance beyond just blisters, creating characteristic lumps. In other words, the patient trades looks for resilience.[2][3]

Requirements[]

Main article: Gain combat implants

This implant is a more invasive upgrade to the Phoenix Armor Implants, which is available once the original set is installed. It requires no additional steps to obtain, apart from gathering the money and finding a second suit of normal combat armor. As with the first version, Combat armor Mk II and Brotherhood armor cannot be used for this purpose.

Cost[]

Cost at each location
Location Physician Normal Barter
Redding Painless Doc Johnson $48000/$30000(see below) n/a
Vault City Doc Andrew $50000 $4000
San Francisco Doctor Fung $49000 n/a

The operation takes six days at all three locations.

At Vault City, the player can negotiate the price down with Charisma 6 or Barter 75%. Note that performing the operation at Doc Andrew's without fixing the Auto-Doc first will kill the Chosen One (assuming the first one was performed elsewhere).

At Redding, Johnson will quote a price of $48 000, and the script will only allow the player to install it if their character has at least that amount in inventory. However, the script only removes $30 000.

Effects[]

  • +10% to Damage Resistance against fire, laser and plasma damage, -1 to Charisma. It replaces the Phoenix Armor Implants.

Doc Andrew: "{274}{}{Well, technically, 'high thermal' is standard Phoenix Armor with some thermal dissipators layered over the membranes.}"
Doc Andrew: "{275}{}{So you're gonna need the basic Phoenix implant graft first.}"
    The Chosen One: "{276}{}{Okay, what's involved?}"
Doc Andrew: "{280}{}{Well, I'm gonna need to scavenge thermal dissipators from another set of combat armor. Good thing is, the dissipators'll double the thermal resistance, absorbing 10% of the bite. But...}"
    The Chosen One: "{281}{}{Yes?}"
Doc Andrew: "{285}{}{It's gonna make your skin blister. Bad. You'll look a lot like that bubbly pre-war packaging material, so don't expect to be getting too many dates after this. And it's gonna cost you. 50K. Up front.}"
The Chosen One: "{286}{}{What the hell. Here's the cash...and another set of combat armor.}"

Doc Andrew: "{312}{}{I hope to heaven you can hear me right now. Look, when you regain feeling in your extremities, you'll feel an incredible itching sensation all over. Don't scratch! If you do, those pus-crusts over the drainage incisions'll burst and leave scars. Give 'em a few weeks to heal, okay?}"
    (Doc Andrew's dialogue)
  2. The Chosen One: "{220}{}{Time for the Phoenix upgrade.}"
Doctor Fung: "{232}{}{This is a major operation. It will cost you your 'good looks', a set of combat armor, and $49000. Are you willing to invest in this?}"
The Chosen One: "{233}{}{Hell yes. Let's do it.}"
Doctor Fung: "{237}{}{There you go! You are ... enhanced. Remember... do not pick at the scabs unless you want horrid scarring to add to your suddenly not-entirely-pleasing appearance.}"
    (Doctor Fung's dialogue)
  3. The Chosen One: "{294}{}{The Assault Enhancement for the Phoenix Armor Implants.}"
Painless Doc Johnson: "{316}{}{You need to have the Phoenix Armor Implants before I can give you the Assault Enhancement. But I'll tell you what it should do. The Assault Enhancement should give you a total of 10% resistance to thermal damage (fire, laser, and plasma) - over and above any other armor you're wearing. The operation takes a few days and it'll cost you $48,000. In addition, you're not going to be too Charismatic after I finish. Layering all those thermal dissipators under your skin is going to make you look a bit lumpy, sort of like an overstuffed burrito.}"

The Chosen One: "{318}{}{That sounds great, Doc. Let's do it.}"
Painless Doc Johnson: "{326}{}{Coming around, are we? You're just jam-packed with thermal-dissipators and dissipative membranes. You won't look quite so lumpy in a few weeks, but you won't be winning any beauty pageants again, either. Try not to pick at the pus-crusts near the drainage incisions until they stop suppurating.}"
