Our Little Secret
From The Vault
| ||||||||||||
Our Little Secret is an unmarked quest in Fallout 3.
First off, you have to find your way to Andale, which is in the middle-bottom of the map, directly south of Fairfax Ruins (you will discover it automatically if you choose to follow your dad on his way to Rivet City). When you arrive, the people will act as if their lives are perfect and there is no "wasteland" and was no Great War. After looking around a bit, find your way to Old Man Harris' house. He will tell you to run away as fast as possible and reveal that there's something very evil going on in the town. After finishing the quest, (depending on how you resolve it) he may reveal more about the history and story of Andale.
There is no reward for this quest other than some loot from the buildings.

[edit] Uncovering the Mystery
After talking to Harris, head to the abandoned shack or the basement of the Smith household. There are a number of ways to gain entry into the basement or the shack:
- Both doors require 100 lockpick skill (Picking either lock will give you negative karma.)
- It is possible to get the keys by pickpocketing the male adults. (Bill Wilson or Jack Smith). Because of their unique diets, they are considered evil, and you will not lose Karma. If they catch you pickpocketing them, they will turn hostile.
- There are also keys in Smith and Wilson's house on the nightstand next to the queen size bed. You will get negative karma for stealing them.
- There is a second key in the Wilson's house on top of the radio in the living room; you'll get negative karma for stealing it.
Upon proceeding into the area, the player can look around and discover that "Strange Meat" really is human flesh. Oddly, you'll still receive a karma loss for stealing the Rippers and knives and such you'll find lying around, as if you're stealing any other things.
[edit] Confrontation
Upon exiting the area, the player will be confronted by the residents of the town, with the exceptions of Junior, Jenny, and Old man Harris. Jack Smith will engage the player in conversation and ask if he/she saw anything unusual.
If you do not go to old man harris first, and lockpick the door during the day they will immediately attack you with no confrontation.
There are two speech checks in the dialogue tree. One of the speech check option is telling them that you are "getting a snack." You will always pass this speech check if you have the Cannibal perk - NOTE: If your speech is at 100, you will get this option as well, confirmed on the Xbox 360 and PS3 -. If you choose to play coy by not answering straight, you will get a different speech check by telling them "Everyone does what they have to." This speech check is easier than the former. If you are successful at either speech check, in essence insisting that you did not see anything wrong and agrees to keep their secret, the townsfolk will be kind to the player and you will be able to receive a free Strange Meat Pie daily from Linda Smith.
On the other hand, if the player refuses to keep the secret, the residents will become hostile and attack. After the fight, the player can proceed to Old Man Harris' house. He will then tell more of the town's history and will agree to help raise the kids right. He states that only after his wife died did he begin to question all the things that went on in Andale, and also that not only was it a town of cannibals, but a town of inbred cannibals.
A third (and easiest) course of action, is if the player wishes to put an end to the cannibalism in Andale, is to break into the shack or basement at night, when all the residents are asleep. You will still be confronted when you exit, but if you can convince the adults you approve of their murderous lifestyle, they will immediately return to their respective houses and beds. After they have all returned to sleep, sneak into the master bedrooms of the Smith and Wilson houses and attack them while they're sleeping. After Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Wilson are dead, their children will abandon their homes and move in with Old Man Harris when they awake.
The encounter with the two families is an easy fight. The Rippers in the shed or the basement make excellent weapons, if you are skilled in melee. The family members have a boost of health, but they have low armor. The men of the families carry guns, while the women use melee weapons or just their fists. It would be smart to kill the fathers first, since they are more dangerous with their firearms. An alternative choice is to plant enough Frag or Bottlecap mines outside beforehand, to kill the residents (and injuring yourself) upon exiting the shack. After the fight, proceed to the grandfather to wrap up the quest.
[edit] Notes
- In the Smith's basement, a copy of Grognak the Barbarian can be found.
[edit] Bugs
- If you nonviolently resolve the confrontation without using the "getting a snack" line, by saying that you went down/in, and saw bodies, but don't care, the four parents will stand with their weapons drawn outside of either the shed or the house with a basement, forever, and the kids will disappear, and Old Man Harris' house is key-locked. Even though they're stuck you will still be able to get a daily Strange Meat Pie from Linda Smith
- Some players arrived at Andale and the families were already gathered in front of the Smith house with their weapons drawn. Mr Smith confronts the player as if he/she has already been in the basement. Since the player cannot lie (pretend he wasn't in the basement) his way out of this conversation, he will have to admit that, he was in the basement even if he was not.
- Killing the families without entering either the basement or shack beforehand causes Harris to lock his door.
- Certain NPC followers will attack the Smiths and Wilsons, even if you end the conversation peacefully.
- The corpses in the basement when resurrected using the console are apparently from Little Lamplight, and MAY walk there. They keep saying things like "Wow! You're big!" And "Mungo Mungo smells like Dung-o...", even though they are adults.
- If you do manage to peacefully confront Jack Smith you may still be attacked by Bill Wilson and his wife. Jack Smith and his beloved cannibal wife will remain peaceful as he attacks you but become enraged when you engage the Wilsons in battle.
- It is possible that you and the families of Andale get ambushed by a group of raiders or enclave soldiers (depending on how far you are on the main quest). If any members of the Andale cannibals die in the ambush, you will lose the ability to do the unmarked quest, even if most of them are still alive.
- It's possible that upon leaving the basement the adults are waiting with their weapons drawn in front of the shed as if you just came out of there. After waiting a few minutes they will slowly make their way to the Smith's house and dialoge will proceed as normal if you approach them.
- If you quickly fast travel after exiting the shed and fast travel to the center of Andale, Jack Smith will still engage in dialogue 50 feet away from you (Xbox 360 Confirmed)
