Detailed walkthrough[]

When talking to Manny Vargas in Novac, he mentions that the town is defended by two snipers: himself during the day, and Boone during the night. Asking about Boone gets him to reveal that they were both former NCR and that Boone had a wife who recently disappeared. Trying to talk to Boone too early has him refuse conversation, saying he needs his sleep for the night shift.

During the night, between 10 p.m. and 9 a.m., enter the Dino Bite gift shop and head up the stairs and through the door at the top to enter the sniper's nest in the mouth of Dinky the T-Rex, where Boone stands. After he questions what the player is doing there, if told they're a stranger, he realizes he has an opportunity and asks the player to help find out who sold his wife off to Legion slavers. Once they do, he asks them to bring the suspect in front of the sniper nest during his shift and also gives his beret to them to wear as a signal to shoot and kill the one they chose.

From here, the player can talk to select inhabitants of Novac to learn what they all think of Boone's wife and see which of them might have the motive to see her disappear. Of them all, talking to No-bark Noonan gives the clearest lead to finding evidence, who can be found at or near his shack behind the motel. When asked about Carla, No-bark mentions that on the night she disappeared, he saw one of the kidnappers go into the motel's lobby.

Follow No-bark's advice and head to the Dino Dee-lite front desk next to the gate into the courtyard. Inside, go behind the counter to find an Easy-locked safe, which can either be picked open or the key to it stolen from Jeannie (there is no loss of Karma for both options). Inside the safe is the bill of sale exposing Jeannie May as the culprit who worked with the Legion to kidnap Carla.

Next, wait until Boone is at his post in the sniper nest, then find Jeannie at her house (first one on the right going west from the motel). She will accept following the player to the dinosaur, convinced that something's wrong there. Once in front of the dinosaur, equip the beret and Boone will kill Jeannie with a headshot. Boone has to be in the T-Rex before the dialogue choice to lure Jeannie to the sniping position will appear.

Head back up to the nest and talk to Boone. When he asks the Courier how they knew it was the right person, they can tell him about the bill of sale they found. If they don't have the bill of sale, it is possible to pass a Speech check of 55 for the same result. If that fails, Boone may try to kill the Courier, or get angry and snatch his beret back, saying that he does not ever want to see them again, eliminating the option of him being a companion. If the Courier tells him about the evidence, they can convince him to become their companion.

Other choices[]

It is possible for the Courier to frame one of several other Novac townsfolk including Alice or Dusty McBride, Cliff Briscoe, Manny Vargas, Ranger Andy, or No-bark Noonan. They can all be asked even before finding the bill of sale to go to the dinosaur where they're shot by Boone. In these various instances, telling Boone that they only had a hunch it was the right person will cause him to get angry and become impossible to recruit as a companion, or even become hostile.

Quest stages[]

StageStatusDescription
10 (Optional) Ask around Novac for information about who kidnapped Boone's wife.
20 (Optional) Look for evidence of the guilty party inside the Dino Dee-lite lobby.
30 Send someone in front of Dinky the Dinosaur. Put on the beret to signal to Boone that this is the culprit.
40Quest finishedReturn to Boone.

Notes[]

  • Boone will refuse to talk with the Courier if either their reputation with the NCR is below Neutral or if their reputation with the Legion is higher than with the NCR. In both cases, wearing NCR armor will make it possible to talk with him again.
  • If the Courier uses Boone's beret to repair any other beret before luring someone to the sniping position, the quest cannot be finished.
  • If the Courier asks the wrong person to go and stand in front of the dinosaur, simply let that person walk over, but do not equip the beret. Boone will not shoot. At this point, whoever the Courier sent over will walk back, and they can go and ask someone else to go and stand there.
  • After Jeannie May Crawford is killed, talk to Cliff Briscoe. "I think it's time we give something back to you" will appear in his dialogue box, but actually he says, "I think it's time we give everything back to you." This dialogue will only happen if the Courier has an Accepted reputation in Novac.
  • If the Courier chooses Jeannie May as Boone's target, the next time they speak to Cliff Briscoe, he will inform them that he is the new proprietor of the motel and give them the key. The Courier will have the option to say "I killed Jeannie May. Do I still get my discount?", although Boone was her killer. Should the Courier choose this option, they will be asked why, and each possible reply produces slightly different reactions, but he will not turn hostile, nor will the Courier's reputation with Novac be damaged in any way. Indeed, given the nature of the situation, he seems rather untroubled, presenting the player with the usual dialogue choices.
  • If the Courier chooses to kill Crawford by themselves, the quest cannot be proceeded. The reason for this becomes clear when asking Boone, "What do I do if I find this person?" He responds by saying, in part, "...And I'll take care of the rest. I need to do this myself." revealing that Boone needs to exact revenge.
  • If Boone shoots Jeannie May, Novac settlers will comment about it when spoken to.

Behind the scenes[]

The quest's name is a reference to the famous torch song "One For My Baby (and One More For the Road)" by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer. It was popularized by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Billie Holiday, and more recently, Hugh Laurie.

Bugs[]

  • PCPC On rare occasions, the AI walking script for non-player characters (including Jeannie's) will stop working. As a workaround, the player must push the non-player character to the location to complete the quest. A more convenient alternative is to get to your intended position, open the console, and type in two commands: prid 0008d74c (selecting Jeannie after telling her to go in front of the dinosaur), moveto player.[verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes, you will not have the talk option to make Jeannie May follow you in front of the dinosaur. The best way to fix this is to talk to Jeannie outside when she leaves around midnight or talk to her in her home while she is sleeping. If this doesn't work, simply exiting and then re-entering the Dino-Deelite front desk or Jeannie May's house will bring back the dialogue option.[verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 Obtaining the bill of sale before talking to No-Bark will result in a quest completion for the optional objectives.[verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes, the bill of sale will not appear in the safe, halting the quest unless the Courier has a high enough Speech (55) to convince Boone without it.[verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes, upon trying to complete the quest, there will be no dialogue option to show Boone the bill of sale, rendering the companion recruitment broken. This bug may be due to having a negative reputation with the NCR. Regaining a positive reputation with them may fix this.[verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 After completing the quest, Boone's beret might remain in your inventory.[verified]
  • PCPC Xbox 360Xbox 360 If the Courier tells Jeannie (or any other person) to go stand in front of the dinosaur and they do not have Boone's beret on, Jeannie won't get shot and the option to take her to the front of the dinosaur will disappear forever.[verified]
    • Waiting for her to go out at midnight and saving/reloading occasionally fixes this bug.
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Just after completing this quest, when you leave Boone up in the mouth, you may come out to find Boone re-entering the gift shop and going up to the mouth as if starting his shift.[verified]
  • PCPC Sometimes, if the Courier tells Jeannie May to go in front of the dinosaur, it will give the compass tick for Boone being in the mouth of it. If the Courier then goes into the dinosaur, Boone will be inside the gift shop, aiming at the wall/stairs and not moving.[verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes, if the Courier is under the influence of alcohol products (beer, wine, whiskey, scotch, etc.), and if you decide to have Jeannie killed, the prompt to ask her to stand in front of the dinosaur will not appear. If you are under the influence, you must wait until their effects are gone.[verification overdue]
