[edit] Fallout and Fallout 2
Nuka-Cola machines are commonly found throughout the wasteland, and in Fallout 2 they're usable. Just right click on the machine and use money into it. This will intiate a Luck and a Agility test which will see if:
- Your character catches the bottle
- If your can't catch it, will he/she able to dodge it with the bottle flying few yards away(If not able, PC will get a hit by the bottle in the groin area. (With the PC saying Uff! and a small HP loss)
[edit] Fallout 3
In Fallout 3, it works like a normal container with only Nuka-Cola, Caps, and, occasionally, Nuka-Cola Quantum. There are 152 of them throughout the Capital Wasteland in Metro stations, homes and buildings.
Each machine will contain at least one Nuka-Cola and has a 10% chance of containing 1-9 Bottle caps and a 10% chance of a Nuka-Cola Quantum. There are also three 75% chances for other Nuka-Colas, meaning that a fully-stocked machine will contain three Nuka-Colas, nine Bottle caps and a Quantum. When using Dogmeat to find chems for you i have found that you can find more than 3 Nuka-Cola's, usually only one more but you could get more than that.
You can buy a "pristine" Nuka-Cola Vending Machine for your house in Megaton (see Moira Brown), or suite in Tenpenny Tower (see Lydia Montenegro). Putting Nuka-Colas into your personal vending machine will turn them into Ice Cold Nuka-Cola which heals you more with less radiation (+20HP/+1RAD vs. +10HP/+2RAD).

[edit] Notes
- The machine in your house/suite can be used to store anything, not just Cola. Simply say you are going to get some Ice Cold Nuka-Cola, switch over to your inventory and deposit any number of other items. The machine has no effect on anything but Nuka-Cola.
[edit] Van Buren
It would also appear in the canceled Van Buren, but whether it would have been usable to the player is unknown.
