Nelson Latimer is a wealthy resident of Diamond City in 2287. He is the son of Malcolm Latimer.

Background[]

Nelson is a wealthy resident of Diamond City's Upper Stands, living in the Latimer residence. His position comes from his father, Malcolm, who is one of the most influential people in Diamond City. Nelson, knowing this, proclaims himself as an equally important member of Diamond City society.[1][2] Others, like Henry Cooke, see him instead as a spoiled and arrogant young man who throws around his father's money to inflate his own ego. Cooke notes that Nelson even envisions himself as an up-and-coming criminal mastermind.[3][4]

To those ends, Nelson is affiliated with some of the shadier players in Diamond City and Goodneighbor. In partnership with Cooke, Nelson has business dealings with Marowski and his gangsters. Together, they have a scheme to smuggle chems into Diamond City in order to avoid paying local taxes on chems imposed by Mayor McDonough. Cooke arranges periodical meetings near Back Street Apparel, where Nelson uses his money to buy chems from Marowski's representative Trish.[5] This arrangement has worked for some time, but recently, Nelson is starting to try and cut Cooke out of their business, no longer believing he is necessary.[6][7][8]

Nelson hides his criminal activities from his father, but Malcolm still knows about it and simply does not step in, believing his son can take care of himself.[9]

Quest[]

Diamond City Blues: Nelson's chem deal with Trish and her associates must be robbed. Note that attacking Nelson before talking to him first will cause Piper to leave and turn hostile if she is a companion. Nelson does not necessarily need to be killed. If the Triggermen are killed and Trish is downed before Nelson dies, he will attempt to escape. However, Nelson also carries caps which are part of the heist spoils to be split between the player character and Paul Pembroke if the latter is present. These caps are only part of his inventory during the quest.

Effects of player's actions[]

  • Assuming Paul Pembroke is present at the heist, the split in the heist spoils will depend on whether Nelson was killed or not. If he died, the split will involve both Nelson's money and the chem crates; otherwise, only the chems will be split.
  • If Nelson is killed, Malcolm Latimer will have additional interactions with the player character about his death. This will depend on whether or not Trish survived the deal; if she survived, Malcolm will angrily confront the player character, and he will hire Triggermen to periodically attack them in Diamond City if they do not apologize or blame someone else as the murderer. If Trish was killed, Malcolm will hire the player character to find out Nelson's fate.
  • If Nelson survives, he will return to his regular routine, mentioning that he has told on the player character to Marowski. Visting Marowski will cause him to demand 2,000 caps in restitution; if not paid within a week, or if refused on the spot, Marowski will send Triggermen who attack the player character in Diamond City.

Behind the scenes[]

An unused quest stage for Diamond City Blues (MS13 stage 440) indicates that originally, Nelson could be killed offscreen by Trish and disappear. No other context is available for how or why this would occur.

  3. The Sole Survivor: "Who's Nelson Latimer?"
Henry Cooke: "Malcolm's kid. An arrogant little pissant. But useful since he has all the money in the world, and likes to think of himself as a budding crime boss. Me and Nelson are supposed to be meeting some gentlemen from Goodneighbor to exchange Nelson's cash for their chems. My plan is simple - we take the money and the chems."

  4. The Sole Survivor: "Let's hear this plan of yours."
Henry Cooke: "Here's the deal. I have some other... businesses on the side. One of them is helping Nelson Latimer spend his dad's money to make himself feel like a gangster."
    (Henry Cooke's dialogue)
  5. The Sole Survivor: "Why smuggle chems into Diamond City? Chems aren't illegal here."
Henry Cooke: "Sure, but Mayor McDonough takes a big cut of all the chems brought into town. Not everybody thinks that's good business. That's where me and Nelson come in. He fronts the cash, I make the arrangements. Cheap chems for Diamond City. Everybody wins. Anything else?"
    (Henry Cooke's dialogue)
  6. Trish: "Marowski's not going to be happy about you guys jerking us around like this."
Nelson Latimer: "Cooke's the one jerking you around. I'm here, right on time. Make sure to tell Marowski that."
    Trish: "Sure, whatever."

Malcolm Latimer: "What? Oh my god... I guess I already knew he must be dead. He was mixed up with some bad people. He thought I didn't know about it. But I never stopped him. Maybe I was... proud of him. Making his way in the world, just like his old man..."
