The NCR-Great Khan War is an ongoing conflict between the New California Republic Army and the Great Khans. The roots of the conflict date back to when the NCR was nothing more than the settlement of Shady Sands and the Khans weren't yet called the Great Khans. Full scale conflict, however, would start when the NCR would attempt to annex tribals, including the Great Khans which would have the war culminate in the Bitter Springs Massacre.

Push to the Mojave
After entering the Mojave, NCR president Wendell Peterson aimed to gain more land in the Mojave so as to gain a foothold over other factions, most prominently the Brotherhood of Steel. In order to fulfill this task, Aaron Kimball would begin a campaign to secure the Mojave and annex the local tribals, of which the Great Khans were the most prominent. Kimball's campaign would be an utter failure, and the Great Khans would begin to attack the NCR settlements. The NCR would retaliate by attacking the Great Khans. Skirmishes would continue, despite the fact that the Great Khans were weakened both by Robert House and the NCR's firepower. The Great Khans would also have the Fiends aid them in the conflict after they began supplying Chems to the raiders.

This naturally has hurt the Khans more than the NCR, as the Khans only have a one known holding (Red Rock Canyon), along with few outposts, which has no strategical value for decimating the NCR as they are all in vincinity of Red Rock Canyon, and as NCR soldiers rarely go there (with the exception of Ranger Station Charlie) as it is swarmed with cazadores and harsh terrain. To show how more desperate their situation is, they have even sent emmisaries to other foes of the NCR, such as the Brotherhood of Steel, Legion, and Fiends, with the Brotherhood emmisary being slaughtered by patrols, the Legion emmisaries being absorbed into the Legion Army along with the rest of the Khans, and the Fiends willing to cooperate but demanding large amounts of chems in exchange.

The NCR sees killing the Khans as nothing more then killing another hostile raider. It means one less raider to worry about, more supplies for the NCR and another kill to his name. The only Khan ally that has truly been a problem for the Republic are the Fiends, as they have many outposts in vincinity to Camp McCarran and other NCR outposts. The Legion rarely goes outside the Colorado River westside border, and the Khans themselves are too few in number to retaliate. The NCR also has hundreds of thousands of troops, if not millions.

The NCR-Great Khan War was a conflict between the New California Republic Army and the Great Khans. While relations between the two were always tense at best, full scale conflict was avoided until the NCR began attempting to annex nearby tribals, including the Khans. The conflict culminated with the Bitter Springs Massacre in 2278, resulting in an NCR victory and near-destruction of the Great Khans. By 2281, the legacy of the war and the massacre were still well remembered, but open conflict between the two became almost non-existent.

War

Origins

When the residents of Vault 15 left the vault, four distinct groups were founded. Of these four, the Khans and the settlers of Shady Sands became the most prominent. The Death Hand, leader and founder of the Khans, often raided the small settlement. However, the raids remained minor until Garl Death-Hand kidnapped Tandi. Aradesh then tasked the Vault Dweller to retrieve his daughter from the Khans. The resulting battle caused the deaths of all the Khans except one, named Darion.

Darion became paranoid and obsessed with revenge against the Vault Dweller and Tandi, who later became the second president of the NCR. He founded the New Khans with the sole purpose of taking revenge on the NCR. His plans, however, were thwarted by the Chosen One, the grandchild of the Vault Dweller. In 2241, an ironic twist of fate occured as the threat of the New Khans ended, as Darion, now an old man, was killed by the grandchild of the man he swore vengeance against.

Rising Conflict

Unlike what occurred with the original Khans, enough members of the New Khans remained. The remnants of the New Khans reformed as the Great Khans, led by Papa Khan. He and the Great Khans left California for the Mojave Wasteland. There they became more powerful, and were known as the "Flails of God." The Three Families and Robert House drove them out of outer Vegas, weakening their hold in the area. As supplies and fresh water began to dwindle, overcrowding was becoming more and more apparent. The New California Republic sent its elite Rangers and scouts into the Mojave Wasteland in search of fertile lands and resources to help expand their borders for their ever growing population.

Push to the Mojave

After entering the Mojave, NCR president Wendell Peterson aimed to gain more land in the Mojave so as to gain a foothold over other factions, most prominently the Brotherhood of Steel. In order to fulfill this task, Aaron Kimball began a campaign to secure the Mojave and annex the local tribals, of which the Great Khans were the most prominent. Kimball's campaign was an utter failure, and the Great Khans began to attack the NCR settlements. The NCR retaliated by attacking the Great Khans. Skirmishes continued, despite the fact that the Great Khans were weakened both by Robert House and the NCR's firepower. The Great Khans also received aid from the Fiends in the conflict after they began supplying chems to the raiders.

Bitter Springs

The NCR continued to pursue its goals in the Mojave Wasteland by attempting to eradicate the Great Khans. The NCR believed to have found the main headquarters of the Great Khans at a location known as Bitter Springs. They failed to realize that Papa Khan had led the main Khan fighting force out of Bitter Springs before they had arrived. In 2278 the NCR sent the 1st Recon unit under the command of Major Gilles to Bitter Springs in the hopes of decimating the Khans fighting force. Commanded to fire until they ran out ammunition, the 1st Recon unit inadvertently slaughtered the sick, the children, and the elderly members of the Great Khans. Referred to as the Bitter Springs Massacre, the incident outraged the Great Khans and was heavily criticized by both proponents and opponents of the NCR as a major tactical mistake.

Aftermath

Decimated at Bitter Springs, the remaining Great Khans and their leader, Papa Khan, moved into Red Rock Canyon where they would have a strategic advantage over the NCR. The NCR established Ranger Station Foxtrot to keep an eye on the Great Khans and occasionally send a scout, but actual conflict was rare.

The Great Khans continued to be hostile to the NCR, despite a stalemate and ceasefire being reached between the two. The Great Khans strengthened their relations with the Fiends, who engaged in skirmishes with the NCR, attacking trade routes and settlements.

Few Khans harboured resentment great enough to actually strike back against the NCR. One such, Oscar Velasco, began to assassinate NCR soldiers and their refugees, and stole supplies from them. Aside from Velasco however, cases were rare.

After generations of being beaten down, the Great Khans were finally broken by the Courier. Those few who avoided the Courier's wrath moved north, into the wilderness of Idaho, where they tried once more to rebuild. Kill Papa Khan and Regis
2
Great Khan end slide 01
After the Second Battle of Hoover Dam, the Great Khans returned for a time to Red Rock Canyon. The NCR's pressing need to expand proved greater than its promise of amnesty, and before long the government decided the Khans had to go. The surviving Great Khans were relocated to an isolated, barren reservation, well north of NCR trade routes. Convince Papa Khan to break his alliance with Caesar's Legion, replace Papa Khan with Regis in For the Republic, Part 2, and complete the endgame quest Eureka! for the NCR.
3
Great Khan end slide 01
For supporting the NCR, the Great Khans were ruthlessly hunted down by the victorious Legion. Caesar destroyed all evidence of their existence at Red Rock Canyon, and forbade mention of their name in any history. The Great Khans' legacy was swiftly forgotten. Convince Papa Khan to break his alliance with Caesar's Legion, and replace Papa Khan with Regis in For the Republic Part 2. Complete the endgame quest Veni, Vidi, Vici for Caesar's Legion.
4
Great Khan end slide 02
As reward for their loyal service, Caesar forcibly integrated the Great Khans into the Legion. The sick and elderly were killed, the women sold as wives to ranking officers, and the tribe's identity was annihilated. Though many Great Khans mourned the death of their tribe, many more were ultimately satisfied with their revenge against NCR. Do not convince Papa Khan to break his alliance with Caesar's Legion, complete the endgame quest Veni, Vidi, Vici for Caesar's Legion.
5
Great Khan end slide 01
After driving the Legion out of the Mojave Wasteland, the victorious NCR turned its attention to those who had allied themselves with Caesar. The Great Khans were among the first tribes to suffer this fate, and the few who survived Hoover Dam were driven north, into the wilderness of Idaho. Do not convince Papa Khan to break his alliance with Caesar's Legion, complete the endgame quest Eureka! for the NCR.
6
Great Khan end slide 03
During the Battle of Hoover Dam, the Great Khans quickly evacuated Red Rock Canyon and headed north and east into the plains of Wyoming. There, they reconnected with the Followers of the Apocalypse and rebuilt their strength. Bolstered by ancient knowledge of governance, economics, and transportation, they carved a mighty empire out of the ruins of the Northwest. Convince Papa Khan to break his alliance with Caesar's Legion, but do not replace him with Regis. Afterwards, convince Papa Khan that the Great Khans should claim their own legacy. This ending is compatible with all 4 endgame quests and will override the others if both conditions are met.
7
Great Khan end slide 03
After their suicidal last stand at Hoover Dam, the Great Khans ceased to exist as a tribe. The few surviving members dispersed, joining up with other tribes and gangs across the Mojave, and quickly forgot their heritage. Convince Papa Khan that the tribe has no true legacy.
