Boo hoo, the mean boss took all of the dumbass slave's goodies! Is 'im gonna cry to Ashur?!

Mex is a Pitt raider guarding the gate to the Pitt around 2277.

Background[]

Mex once served as a general guard in The Pitt’s Downtown region, but his excessive cruelty and punishment towards the slaves led Ashur to instead have him guard the gates to the city. He now guards the gates against outside threats and disposes of escaped slaves who attempt to cross the bridge, going so far as to lay down mines and shoot escapees with his rifle.[Non-game 1]

Upon the Lone Wanderer's arrival, their interaction with Mex depends on the attire they are wearing. Should they be wearing the previously acquired slave outfit, he will assume them to be an escaped slave who was unable to cross the bridge, saying that they are lucky he doesn’t kill them right then and there, instead confiscating their equipment and sending them into Downtown.[1] If they are not wearing the slave outfit, their options are more expansive.[2] They can lie that they are a Pitt slave despite their lack of an outfit, in which case the outcome is the same as if they are wearing the outfit.[3] They can also claim that they have come to the Pitt to join the Pitt raiders, in which case Mex sarcastically rebukes them and sends them into Downtown, where they are subsequently ambushed by Reddup and enslaved.[4][5] They can also say that they are "death" and have come for him, in which case a fight breaks out.[6]

If the Lone Wanderer attempts in vain to reacquire their confiscated equipment from Mex’s locked box, he will have a variety of insulting comments.[7][8][9][10]

Daily schedule[]

Mex and three of his men keep their guns trained on the road into town all day, ready to blow away any pests or vermin trying to get in.

Quests[]

Effects of player's actions[]

  • If the Lone Wanderer tells him they are a returning escaped slave, he will strip the Lone Wanderer of their inventory (except the "hidden weapon" possibly received from Wernher), give a slave outfit that is automatically equipped (whether the Lone Wanderer is wearing one already or not), and then tell them to enter Downtown.
    • If the Lone Wanderer tells him they came looking for work, he will sarcastically invite them to enter through the door to Downtown and fill out a "fucking application", whereupon the same happens as noted above; an ambush with items stripped (except the "hidden weapon"), and the slave outfit.
    • Killing him on the way in once again sets off the ambush, except there is different dialogue from the ambushers.

Notes[]

  • Mex also has an Infiltrator, the silenced and scoped R91 assault rifle featured in The Pitt. He is not the only non-player character to wield this weapon, however, as his two guards as well as Gruber in The Hole also wield it.
  • When he strips the Lone Wanderer of their inventory, even if not carrying a thing, he still asks where they got it all.

Notable quotes[]

Appearances[]

Mex appears only in The Pitt add-on for Fallout 3.

Behind the scenes[]

Mex is a reference to the chain of Mad Mex restaurants, which are relatively popular in Pittsburgh, and the surrounding area like in Monroeville and Squirrel Hill.

Non-game

  1. Fallout 3 Official Game Guide Game of the Year Edition p. 85: "Mex
Cruel and despicable, even for a Pitt Raider, Mex has been removed from general guard duties by Ashur and sent to guard the gates to Pitt Downtown after bouts of Pitt Slave punishment that left many with horrific injuries. Adept with a rifle, Mex is content with tagging escapees, laying down a variety of mines, and watching his prey explode in a variety of impressive arterial spray patterns."
