To hurt the people who hurt me.— Maximus on why he joined the Brotherhood

Maximus is a member of the Brotherhood of Steel in the Fallout TV series. He is one of the three protagonists, the other two being Lucy and The Ghoul.

Background[]

Maximus is described as a wannabe soldier who grew up above ground but, like Lucy, was also raised in a cloistered "family" of sorts: the Brotherhood of Steel. However, unlike Lucy, he has a "cynical sense of self-preservation" and does not always act honorably.

He has recently been assigned to assist a power armored Brotherhood soldier.

Personality[]

Maximus is someone who needs something to believe in in order to keep him going. He is said to be someone who yearns to cling onto something powerful, such as the Brotherhood, because it makes him feel more capable than he is on his own.[1] He will do anything to further the Brotherhood's goals of bringing law and order to the wasteland.[2] He has much internal conflict going on and is said to be someone who has a war going on within himself.[3]

Notes[]

According to Jonathan Nolan, as quoted in Vanity Fair's Fallout First Look article, Maximus is a squire. However, in past series entries the rank of squire has only been used to refer to child trainees in the Brotherhood, with older combat-ready trainees being called initiates instead. Fallout 76 indicates this to be a conscious decision from the time of Roger Maxson, as some considered it insulting for adults to use a title traditionally reserved for children.[4]

  • It is possible Nolan is only talking about Maximus' role, rather than his rank; the Vanity Fair article calls Maximus a squire in reference to him being assigned to a power-armored "knight," while Nolan only calls him a squire in comparison to the medieval legends on which the Brotherhood is based. Maximus has only been called a "soldier" so far in all other promotional media.
“He’s a squire,” Nolan says. “This is a drawing on the classic Arthurian Knight legends where life was cheap and you had a squire as long as they were useful. They had to prove their worth, they had to prove their valor and their strength, and if they didn’t, they were kind of cast aside.”— Jonathan Nolan, Fallout First Look
