The name is Mathia. I am officially Maxson's assistant, but I am also here to make sure no one messes with the old man.

Mathia is a Paladin assisting High Elder John Maxson of the Brotherhood of Steel, found on level 4 of the Lost Hills bunker in Fallout.

Background[]

Mathia is assigned to assist[1] High Elder John Maxson in his duties, which primarily cover paperwork necessary for the order to function. She also processes weapon upgrades for her fellow brothers, assuming Maxson clears one.[2] Beyond her official duties, she also ensures nobody messes with the "old man," as she's fond of calling him (Maxson doesn't mind and she's not about to insult him while he's right next to her). "Messing" includes handling any and all situations that require a firm hand, such as removing disturbances.[3]

While technically only Maxson's assistant, Mathia works with all the elders, making her a fixture of the elders' rooms.[4]

Other interactions[]

  • If the player character is thrown out of the Brotherhood by Maxson, Mathia will immediately initiate dialogue. The player can resist, causing the whole Brotherhood to go hostile, or comply and be deposited outside the bunker, barred from re-entry.
  • With Intelligence < 4, Mathia will comment "I can't believe an idiot like you is the one who made the Ancient Order run. Go figure."

Quests[]

Appearances[]

Mathia appears only in Fallout and is mentioned in the Fallout Bible.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Mathia's gender is a minor inconsistency. Michael explicitly refers to Mathia using female pronouns, but when Mathia engages the player after they're thrown out of the Brotherhood, the narration says "he grabs your arm".
  • Cabbot refers the player to Mathia when asked about some Tell-Me-Abouts, suggesting she played a larger or different role originally.
