You belong down in the lower section of the city. It's more... suitable for those lacking in ambition.

Malcolm Latimer (mispelled in-game as Malcom) is a wealthy resident and an associate of the Triggermen living in Diamond City in the Commonwealth in 2287.

Background[]

Malcolm grew up a poor, lower class Diamond City resident.[1] Forced to turn to crime due to his circumstances, he eventually met Paul Pembroke and Henry Cooke.[2] Together, they orchestrated a massive heist on Marowski in 2267, who was then the most powerful drug kingpin and crime boss in the Commonwealth.[3] They robbed a warehouse in Quincy full of chems belonging to Marowski, dealing a massive blow to Marowski's drug empire. Despite putting a huge bounty on the heist perpetrators, Marowski never found out their identities.[4]

Meanwhile, Malcolm, having gotten very wealthy from the spoils of the heist, used it to develop his ambition. Over the years, he went on to become one of the richest and most powerful residents in Diamond City, "practically running Diamond City" behind the scenes by paying Mayor McDonough to do his bidding.[1] He is no stranger to dirty work, but he prefers to hire others such as the Triggermen to get it done while staying within the confines of the law himself, especially when said business is outside of Diamond City.[5] Now, he looks down on the people of the Lower Fields from which he came, believing they have not put in the effort to earn the right to a higher position like he did.[6]

Malcolm has a son, Nelson, who can be found outside of the Colonial Taphouse or at the center of Diamond City near the chapel during the daytime. Nelson, who is involved in various shady enterprises, keeps his father out of the loop.[7] However, Malcolm knows about his son's criminal activities and simply chooses not to step in, believing Nelson will eventually sort himself out.[8] He also admits that inwardly, he is somewhat proud of his son for "making his way in the world, just like his old man."[9]

Interactions with the player character[]

Interactions overview[]

Interactions

This character is involved in quests.

Quest[]

The Marowski Heist: Malcolm can be blackmailed over the Marowski Heist photo. He will pay 400 caps, which can be raised to 600 via persuasion, to buy the photo. Alternatively, if Marowski is given the photo, he will pay 300 caps (400 if successfully persuaded) for the Sole Survivor to assassinate Malcolm.

Effects of player's actions[]

Malcolm has a series of interactions which occur if Nelson was killed in the chem deal during Diamond City Blues. These events will also depend on whether Trish and/or Paul Pembroke survived the deal or not.

  • If Trish survived, Malcolm will confront the player character for murdering Nelson, having heard about it from Marowski. (This occurs even if someone else killed Nelson.) There are several options available: Admit to the deed, shift the blame, brush it off, or walk away. Angering Malcolm will cause him to send Triggermen who will periodically attack the player character in Diamond City.
    • Shifting the blame requires a persuasion check to succeed. If it fails, a persuasion check to apologize can be used to avoid Malcolm's hitsquad. If it succeeds, the player character can optionally implicate Marowski or Paul Pembroke as Nelson's killer.
      • If Marowski is blamed, Malcolm will offer 400 caps (600 with a persuasion check) to assassinate Marowski. If the job is accepted, the player character will lose affinity with Piper, Hancock, Curie, Preston Garvey, Nick Valentine, and Strong.
      • If Paul is blamed, Malcolm will offer 200 caps instead (300 with a persuasion check) to assassinate Paul. The player character will lose affinity with Hancock and Curie. Paul can still be blamed if he is dead, the only difference being that Malcolm will not offer the hit on Paul.
    • Admitting to murdering Nelson will cause Malcolm to send the Triggermen unless a persuasion check is passed to apologize. This option will gain affinity from Piper, Curie, Codsworth, Nick Valentine, Danse, and Preston, but lose affinity with Cait and MacCready.
  • If Trish died (leaving no witnesses at the scene,) Malcolm will ask for the player character to find Nelson, offering 100 caps (200 if persuaded.)

Other interactions[]

  • Malcolm will stop sending the Triggermen after the player character if a fee of 2,000 caps is paid, or if he dies.
  • If Malcolm is still alive once The Marowski Heist quest has been completed (if the Marowski Heist photo was given to Marowski, but his request to kill Malcolm was refused,) he will be killed by Triggermen soon afterward upon the player character returning to Diamond City. The Triggermen will not be hostile to the player character.

Notes[]

In the game code, his Editor ID is spelled MalcolmLatimer with the second "l," but, in the name category, it is spelled Malcom without the second "l," and thus in-game he is seen spelled Malcom despite other code and dialogue references to his name being spelled Malcolm.

Appearances[]

Malcolm Latimer appears only in Fallout 4.

  1. 1.0 1.1 Sole Survivor: "How did you get involved in something like the Marowski Heist?"
Malcolm Latimer: "You wouldn't know it to look at me now, but I grew up a Lower. I ran with a rough crowd back then.
But, unlike some, I made something of myself. I took my share of the Marowski Heist and now, I practically run Diamond City."

    (Malcolm Latimer's dialogue)
  2. The Sole Survivor: "So how do you go from the Marowski Heist to running a bar?"
Henry Cooke: "Me and Paul Pembroke and Malcolm Latimer. Back in the old days when we were all poor and stupid and happy. But you were about to sell me that photo... right?"
    (Henry Cooke's dialogue)
  3. The Marowski Heist
  4. The Sole Survivor: "Why don't you tell me what's so interesting about this."
Darcy Pembroke: "Oh my god. You really don't know. You're not from around here, are you? That's Marowski's old chem warehouse in Quincy. Back when he was the biggest gangster around... 20 years ago. Somebody knocked over his warehouse and took everything. Marowski put out a huge bounty on whoever did it, but never caught them. I had no idea that Paul was in on the Marowski heist. My Paul! I can't believe it."
    (Darcy Pembroke's dialogue)
  5. The Sole Survivor: "Why didn't you just kill Paul yourself?"
Malcolm Latimer: "It would undermine McDonough's status as the town figurehead if I blatantly flouted the law like that. Besides, I'm no assassin. That's what I hire people like you for. I hope you have some good news for me."
    (Malcolm Latimer's dialogue)
  6. Malcolm Latimer: "Another glass of wine, Wellingham..."
Wellingham: "Certainly, sir. Anything for an Upper Stands resident..."
Malcolm Latimer: "This is what I like about you, Wellingham. You know what you are. Not trying to be anything other than helpful. Not like those people down there. Lower Field workers always want what they haven't earned."
Wellingham: "An astute observation, sir. Let me just freshen your glass again."
    Malcolm Latimer: "Thank you, Wellingham..."
    (Malcolm Latimer's and Wellingham's dialogue)
  7. The Sole Survivor: "Do you know what he was doing outside Diamond City?"
Malcolm Latimer: "What? No, I don't. He never told me anything about what he was up to. But why do you ask? Did you find him?"
    (Malcolm Latimer's dialogue)
  8. The Sole Survivor: "I'm sorry he's dead. Things just got out of hand."
Malcolm Latimer: "I appreciate that. Nelson, he... well, I know he was no choir boy. I always hoped he'd get that out of his system and make me proud one day. That's done now. I just... yeah. Thanks for being honest."
    (Malcolm Latimer's dialogue)
  9. The Sole Survivor: "I already found Nelson. I'm afraid he's dead."
Malcolm Latimer: "What? Oh my god... I guess I already knew he must be dead. He was mixed up with some bad people. He thought I didn't know about it. But I never stopped him. Maybe I was... proud of him. Making his way in the world, just like his old man..."
    (Malcolm Latimer's dialogue)
