Malcolm Holmes used to collect star bottle caps to get the treasure that's hidden in the Sunset Sarsaparilla Headquarters building. However, he retired because he got too old to keep hunting for star bottle caps.
Interactions with the player character
After the Courier has picked up a few Sunset Sarsaparilla star bottle caps, they will encounter a man who claims he has been following them. Holmes says he is a retired trader who noticed you had the same interest in the bottle caps that he collected long ago. He also mentions that if enough caps are collected, the treasure can be claimed by someone named Festus.
Malcolm Holmes also mentions that there are people willing to kill for the blue star caps, including someone called Allen Marks.

54 Bottle Caps
6 Sunset Sarsaparilla Stars
- After speaking with the player, Malcolm Holmes will walk directly to the Mojave Outpost. He will disappear from the game once he arrives there. Since he has 6 star caps on him, one should try pickpocketing or killing him after the conversation ends. There is no karma loss if killed in stealth mode.
- Malcolm claims he stopped collecting Sunset Sarsaparilla Stars a long time ago, yet he will still be in possession of 6 Stars.
- Malcolm is carrying the Roving Trader Hat and Roving Trader Outfit; both of which are valuable for players to increase their trade profit.
The courier is usually visited by Malcolm shortly after he or she leaves Goodspring. However, Malcolm could be killed or lost on his way. If the courier did not see Malcolm for a long time, the player may want to use console codes to fix Malcolm:
- prid 0010651a
- prid 0010651a
- moveto player
After finding the first bottlecap, go to the Powder Ganger Camp West and sleep until Malcolm finds you. This will not help if he gets killed.
Malcolm Holmes appears in Fallout: New Vegas.
