What?! You dare question me? How about I experiment on your brain, you twisted skag?!— A mad scientist to the Vault Dweller

The mad scientists are a quartet of Master's most talented scientists, experimenting with FEV to further the human potential They are found in the Los Angeles Vault in Fallout.

Background[]

Tasked with furthering the Master's mutation program, the mad scientists work under the protection of Vincent, a Nightkin who also doubles a lab aid, ensuring their test subjects do not pose a danger to themselves or the Master's glorious future. Their main focus is unlocking the full potential of FEV, not as a tool for creating super mutants in the vats, but as a scalpel to force controlled mutation. Their focus is on unlocking the psychic potential in humans, by injecting FEV into various areas of the brain, such as the pineal gland.[1]

Unfortunately, their experiments are not going well. The "Master's truth" is indeed revealed, resulting in increased psychic ability, but at the cost of terminal insanity. Of the four experiments where such psychic changes did manifest, all had to be sequestered and nullified to prevent them from harming themselves or others.[2]

The scientists use Vault dwellers for their experiments whenever the Unity manages to uncover and conquer another shelter. However, it has been considerable time since they last had a dweller to work with, and only one remains in the laboratory's holding pens.[3]

All four are fervent believers in the Master and his (its?) glorious future, and act deferentially whenever the Master's name is invoked. They are loathe to raise his ire,[4] but truth to be told, they just respond really well to any form of authority.[5] Even if that authority is a dweller in a Vault jumpsuit parading through their lab, claiming to be dressed like an intruder to gain their confidence.[6]

This character has other interactions.

The scientists provide a clue on where to get the nullifier.

Other interactions[]

  • Talking to the mad scientists is somewhat tricky, and requires a decent Speech to get anywhere with them without causing them to grow suspicious and attack (all Speech checks are made with a malus from -10 to -20). However, the player can learn about the psychic warfare program from them and gain another clue on where to gain the nullifier, as well as the fact that the mutants have already raided Vaults before.
