The Brotherhood does its best, but sometime's it takes a little something... special. That's where the Lyons' Pride comes in.Sarah Lyons

Lyons' Pride (commonly truncated as the Pride) is a tactical unit within Lyons' Brotherhood of Steel, comprised of elite Brotherhood soldiers led by Sentinel Sarah Lyons in Fallout 3.[1][2][3][4]

Background[]

Forming the squad[]

The Pride was formed by the chapter's elder, Owyn Lyons to combat the growing super mutant presence in the Washington, D.C. area, later extending to the forces of the Enclave, as well as continuing his mission to lend aid to the inhabitants of the wasteland.[5][Non-game 1] He assigned leadership of the crack squad to a sentinel, and his daughter, Sarah Lyons. In her position, Sentinel Lyons personally chooses those that may join the Pride from a list of applicants drawn from the larger chapter.[2][3][4][6]

The Pride operates primarily out of an outpost in the vicinity of the GNR building plaza in Chevy Chase after the Brotherhood made a deal with the station DJ Three Dog to offer protection in exchange for keeping Galaxy News Radio broadcasting and cutting through the broadcasts of Enclave Radio dominating the airwaves.[7][Non-game 2] However, the group also has a private area within the A-ring of the Citadel called the Lyons' Den, which includes a barracks and common room.

A chance encounter[]

In 2277, during a mission to reinforce the standing troops around Galaxy News Radio against increased super mutant attacks, the Pride suffered the loss of two initiates, Reddin and Jennings,[6][8][Non-game 3] and first encountered the Lone Wanderer, though they were considered a civilian and told to stay out of the Pride's way while following them to the GNR building plaza to look for their father.

Later, following their escape after being captured by the Enclave and taken to their stronghold of Raven Rock, upon returning to the Citadel and debriefing with Elder Lyons and his council on events going forward, Sentinel Lyons showed more respect to the Lone Wanderer and made them an honorary member of the Pride, including the option to wear their recon or power armor.[9]

Battle for Project Purity[]

The Pride as a whole later participated in the Battle of Project Purity alongside Liberty Prime and the Lone Wanderer. After fighting through the Enclave's forces protecting the Jefferson Memorial, Sentinel Lyons joined the Lone Wanderer in entering the purifier and inputting the code to activate it without using the modified FEV as intended by President Eden, resulting in an explosion that incapacitated all present parties.[10][11][12]

Broken Steel[]

Two weeks after the Battle of Project Purity,[13] Paladin Tristan, now in charge of the Pride while Sentinel Lyons recovered from her injuries,[14] aided the Lone Wanderer on many missions including an attack on a satellite relay station controlled by the Enclave,[15] the acquisition of a Tesla coil from the Olney Powerworks,[16] and instructing them during the Assault on Adams Air Force Base.[17] Following the destruction of the mobile base crawler, a recovered Sentinel Lyons aided the exfiltration efforts of the Lone Wanderer onboard Pride One.[18]

Later days[]

It is unknown what became of the Pride after the post-2277 deaths of both Owyn and Sarah Lyons, and the ascension of Arthur Maxson as elder of the reformed East Coast Brotherhood, whether if they were redesignated, or left to guard the Citadel in the former capital while the Elder and most of the chapter leadership traveled to the Commonwealth aboard the Prydwen to combat the Institute in 2287.

Interactions with the player character[]

The Pride is tasked with the suppression of super mutant activity within the Mall and Chevy Chase areas of Washington, D.C., and it is during their mission to reinforce the outpost outside the GNR building plaza that they first encounter the Lone Wanderer.[5][Non-game 2]

Quests[]

Insignia[]

The Lyons' Pride insignia differs from that of the Brotherhood of Steel standard. In place of the three gears, the Pride's insignia shows a lion rampant imposed over the upper sword blade, inside the span of the wings.[19]

Technology[]

Each permanent member of the Pride is equipped with a set of T-45 power armor emblazoned with the Pride insignia on the pauldron, replacing the standard Brotherhood of Steel insignia. The weapon variety among members of the Pride range from sniper rifles and plasma rifles to super sledges and Gatling lasers, though the most common weapon is a laser rifle.[20]

Between the Battle of Project Purity and Battle of Adams Air Force Base, the Pride also gained access to a captured Enclave Vertibird now dubbed Pride One.[21][22]

Notes[]

Appearances[]

The Lyons' Pride appears in Fallout 3 and its add-on Broken Steel.

Behind the scenes[]

The group's name is a play-on-words of "lion's pride," 'pride' being the collective name for a group of lions, in relation to Owyn Lyons' last name.

The Lone Wanderer: "What's the Brotherhood doing here?"
Knight Sergeant Wilks: "We have a relationship with the station here. We stay in this reinforced structure, and protect it from the Super Mutants. This is the only real safe spot in the ruins of D.C. The rest of the place is crawling with those walking abominations. It's nice to have a port in the storm, you know?"

You are to proceed to the Olney Powerworks. Once there, you are to locate and acquire a Tesla Coil, and return to the Citadel with it. Now get moving."

"Lyons, 75, was already highly decorated when he set out from the order's West Coast headquarters, leading a party of soldiers on a mission to reestablish contact with the 'Eastern Brotherhood.' He discovered this abandoned Pentagon military complex. The presence of Super Mutants sent a chill up the collective spine of the Brotherhood; these weren't the children of the dreaded Master, nor were they the remnants of the band that fled east and were ultimately destroyed (or assimilated into the Brotherhood of Steel) in the Chicago area. No, this was a new breed of Super Mutant, one with a local origin. But where did they come from? What did they want? How were they reproducing? Elder Lyons was ordered to discover the source of this new Super Mutant infestation and wipe it from the face of the earth. Recent weeks have seen him galvanize his 'Pride' to thwart the remnants of the Enclave forces, and to provide drinking water to all."

"Sarah, 26, was born in the West Coast Brotherhood of Steel headquarters. At the age of seven, she accompanied her father on his journey east to the Capital Wasteland (her mother having died several years earlier). Sarah Lyons is Brotherhood through and through, as dedicated and decorated as her father when he was younger. She commands a group of soldiers assigned to patrol the Washington, D.C., Mall area and operates out of the G.N.R. studio outpost."

"Unfortunately, Paladin Vargas, whose job is to train initiates and steer them away from heavy fighting, has failed in this responsibility. His oversight has recently resulted in an attack on a ground of Brotherhood of Steel Initiates. Initiate Jennings bore the full brunt of a Super Mutant attack, and recently succumbed to the wounds.

He is no relation to Nathaniel Vargas of Megaton."

To him, combat is like worship, and he treats his rifle as a holy object and his targets as the unfortunate victims of his god's wrath. He says a prayer for the soul of each mutant he kills. He's extremely experienced, and completely unflappable: all according to god's will. He can be found guarding Galaxy News Radio from Super Mutants."

  7. Fallout 3 Official Game Guide Game of the Year Edition p. 80: "KNIGHT CAPTAIN IRVING GALLOWS"
"Gallows is the Pride’s scout and stealth expert. He’s a quiet, kind of creepy man who isn’t much liked by the Brotherhood members beyond the Pride. It’s been said that if an enemy is in the field and sees Gallows, he’s already dead. Gallows tends to disappear from time to time, which only adds to the mystery surrounding him. But it is well known among the other members of Lyons’s Pride that Gallows is actually out hunting and killing Super Mutants. At least, they HOPE they’re Super Mutants...."
