* There is a way to get them and not side with Caesar's Legion. This way doesn't work if your Courier is a female, as the Legion does not allow for women to participate in the arena. For the part where you have to be in Legion territory do not take Boone with you, and let Benny escape to the Fort. Do not kill Vulpes Inculta when he approaches you in New Vegas, and proceed after Benny to the Fort and speak to Caesar. When you first approach him, ask him "How may I serve you" to gain Legion fame. After speaking with him, activate or destroy the Securitrons in the Fortification Hill bunker for more Legion fame. After you've finished in the bunker, finish Benny in the arena for the last bit of Legion fame. If you are playing on very hard and in hardcore mode, and you have problems finishing him, let Arcade Israel Gannon wait outside Caesar's tent and he'll help you with his Plasma Defender. And now the hard part, if you do not want to do any of the legion side quests or help the legion in any way, you will need to steal some NCR dogtags. I think around 30 is enough, 42 confirmed. It is important that you give all of them to Aurelius of Phoenix at the SAME TIME, if not the fame is not going to be enough to raise your status to Liked. It will require a lot less if you do some side quest for them, however. After you get the shades from their safe house, you can slaughter them.

So, by picking up the safehouse loot, saving, removing the patch, loading, reinstalling the patch, and loading again, the lucky shades will be both on the bed and still in your inventory.

The lucky shades are a unique piece of eyewear in Fallout: New Vegas.

Characteristics

The lucky shades provide no Damage Threshold, but do provide a bonus of 1 to Luck. They can be repaired with other glasses, including sunglasses.

Locations

Found inside the Caesar's Legion safehouse, on a bed with a suit of Legion praetorian armor, a displacer glove, and two time bombs.

Notes

  • The lucky shades were added to the game by patch 1.2. Prior to this patch they existed within the game's files, but were not placed anywhere in the game and also lacked the effect which increased the wearer's Luck.
  • This item was also in Fallout 2 as mirrored shades (with a Charisma bonus instead of Luck) and in Fallout 3 as lucky shades.
  • This is one of the few clothing items that increase S.P.E.C.I.A.L. (Luck) stats (the others being naughty nightwear and the Courier duster).
  • While these shades give +3 Perception with the Four Eyes trait, it should be noted that they do not offer +1 Perception without Four Eyes. If Four Eyes is not selected, the lucky shades only affect Luck.
  • With the 1.2 patch, it is possible to get more than one pair of lucky shades. Further testing is required to determine the exact details of this glitch, but the basics are this: the patches essentially reload the loot found in the safehouses that was not there in the original version of the game. So, by picking up the safehouse loot, saving, removing the patch, loading, reinstalling the patch, and loading again, the lucky shades will be both on the bed and still in your inventory.
    • It's unclear what the advantage of this would be however, as companions are not capable of utilizing the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. bonuses from items. This deficiency in companions is a carry over from Fallout 3.

Bugs

Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes, the lucky shades cannot be repaired by any non-player character. However, they can still be repaired with any other glasses (this happened with patch 1.2 installed, most non-player character's that offer repair, cannot repair armor/headgear anyways). [verified]
